Chargers Gameday Thread

Well, here we are, with our first meaningful game in January in nine years. How we got here no longer matters. What matters is where we're going, and we'll know that before the sun goes down this evening.

In 1980, Dan Pastorini went down after five games with a broken leg. Jim Plunkett came off the bench and promptly threw five interceptions. However, he led the Raiders to victories in his next six starts, setting the stage for a wild-card berth and an eventual Super Bowl victory.

Simply put, it's not over until it's over. How you start is not nearly as important as you finish. Today is the day to finish strong and set the stage for another improbable postseason for the Silver and Black. Today is the day to improve upon the record that got Tom Cable fired. Today is a lot of things...

GO RAIDERS!

Wonder what that dude really did to get tossed. Holding onto Murphy for a few seconds was worth a flag, but he must have done something else to warrant an ejection.

The Chargers already look defeated to me. Love it.

Un-be-lievable. With the season on the line, the Raiders defense allows the Chargers to go 99 and half yards to pretty much end their season.

There's still time I suppose. But the defense hasn't stopped the Chargers on their last 6 possessions.

That's what we gave up for Palmer? I thought it was only one first rounder.

I could take the Bolts successfully spoiling the Raiders. However, the Chiefs have done the Raiders a big favor by defeating the Broncos in the final game. In other words, the Raiders have received a significant help today. Yet, they have trouble taking advantage of this pleasant surprise.

4:24 PM

We did not lose two first round picks. It only would have been two first round picks had the Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship game this season. Instead we lose a first round pick this year and a 2nd round pick in 2013.

Tony's right. No matter what happened throughout the game, the Raiders had them inside their own 1 yard line and down only five. The defense was a complete failure.

No punts all day by San Diego. No pressure on the QB all day.

Guess the Raiders should have tried harder to keep Jared Gaither.

New GM, new HC and DC, new defensive scheme and this team will have a good chance to get in the playoffs next yr. We have Wimbley and Houston covering Gates...are you freakin serious? No stunts, straight rush all game long and any blitzes were picked up so easily by them....A HIGH SCHOOL DEFENSIVE SCHEME will not win in the NFL unless your Offense is lights out. And Palmer kept the Raiders in it, he can be a lights out QB if the coaching is good.

Palmer will keep the Offense very potent next yr, McFadden really hurt as today all we saw from the poor coaching is Bush up the middle and Chargers swarmed him every time, Bush cannot bounce it outside. And still Palmer racked up big yrds.

Biggest surprise of the yr = DHB, he still shows an immature football IQ and poor routes, but he is making plays with an occasional drop. O-line needs work, still, we need another NFL corner and LB. In a different scheme, McClain will be a good MLB.

All I ask from this Org, is to bring in a strong GM who will hire quality coaches. Hue is not a HC, many of you complain of keeping him to keep the continuity, HE ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH, so if he isn't good enough, he shouldn't be the HC. Without Mr.Davis to mentor him and keep him in check, Hue is LOST.

It was fun while it lasted, but this team can be a good team next year if the org makes the RIGHT OFFSEASON MOVES.

thoroughly disgusting end to the year. we lost two 1st round picks because of that trade. nothing less than a superbowl win was gonna justify that trade and now what? we watch the playoffs from home!

this defense SUCKS! penalties and sorry ass defense killed us all year! there were some suspicious calls all year coaching staff also (mostly defense).

ownership needs to find the right GM. that GM needs to fire bresnahan at the very least. he also needs to be creative with free agency as we have NO draft

so we sit atbhome waiting for training camp and hopefully some big changes come down!

Once again, the trade did NOT cost us two first round picks. It would have cost us two first round picks had the Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship game, which obviously did not happen. It cost us this year's (2012) first round pick and a second round pick in 2013 because we did not make the playoffs.

Palmer = 1st Round in 2012; 2nd Round in 2013

That's some of the most uninspired football the Raiders have played all year.

What a complete mismatch of chargers WRs vs the Raiders secondary (and LBs).

Once again, McClain burned down the middle in coverage against a far superior WR. This time in the end zone.

Raiders looked lost. What a waste.
What a shame!

5:01 PM

I still like the Palmer trade. The defense really let us down this year, squandering leads against Buffalo, Denver, and Detroit....plus, of course, totally laying down against San Diego in a must win.

Jackson talked about a killer instinct (lacking it) after the game and how that needs to change. Sounds like he's referring to either certain players or the def coordinator.

Can't fault the offense too much, even though they settled for field goals too often.

Disappointing, especially after the gift from Kansas City.

Hue/Bres/Palmer need to go--they quit and I've lost ALL respect for them.

"Palmer need to go--they quit and I've lost ALL respect for them."

How, in any way, can you hang this on Palmer? Palmer didn't quit, did you see him take the team into the endzone in the 4th qrtr and give HIS COACHES A CHANCE TO GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER? Palmer is a keeper, with him and McFadden healthy, this O will be hard to stop.

I found it very interesting what Gannon said during the broadcast...he said Palmer had told him that Hue wasn't available enough to work the gameplans during the week....then I remind myself of the pic supplied by one of the posters, of Hue in a 'beauty salon' getting HIS NAILS DONE? Hue can't handle the responsibility of being a HC, I think he took it for granted that the franchise would be his to run...I am hoping that it is NOT THE CASE. If it is, Raiders are in for more losing seasons. Time to clean the Front Office, inject new blood and bring this team into the 21st century.

But, I love football, Raiders first, of course, and there is plenty to be had. Oakies need to clean their heads more than they need to clean their house... when you point a finger, that's having the other four pointing at you. Blame is spelled B~LAME... Tebow is in the palyoffs as a sucky QB of a suck team because THEY DID NOT LEAD THE LEAGUE IN PENALTIES AND THEY STUCK TOGETHER THROUGH ADVERSITY! If you don't respect that ethic, you need to check into Manhood 101. Go Pats!

So, is Palmer supposed to throw into obvious deep coverage and get picked? If they are dropping 6 back in deep zone, is he supposed to throw into it? Some people just don't get it.

Yes, yes he is.

You have nothing left to lose by throwing the Hail Marys--by your own admission, the game was over, right?

So what do you do, throw the ball in a "safe place?" Just like playing Prevent D?

Foot, accelerator pedal, do it.

By the way, there's no way the refs did it this time.

This was the first game in a long time that I felt was called fairly.

They missed some stuff on both sides (holding by the Dolts, in particular), I thought, but they were very even-handed.

Dang good crew.

Ever heard of the term "garbage time"? That's what it was, just playing out the clock and that isn't on Palmer...the guy comes in to Oakland and takes over a team that lost their star RB, too many WR's to even count to get familiar with and he tries to keep the team in it, when the D couldn't stop the Oilers of the early 70's...and you call him a quitter because he doesn't pass deep with 27 seconds left and NO CHANCE of a win? Are all of you freaks related? Or are you just one guy under multiple names who gets a real thrill out of being an Internet duffus?

OTB, Jethro and all the rest of your 'personalities' can go back to your Broncos site and have plenty of fun over there now, are you still cruisin the Charger site for friends? How many 'personalities' do you have on their sites?
