Chargers Gameday Thread

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that today's game is the most meaningful game the Raiders have played in more than seven years. For once, finally, we're still in contention for the divisional title in December.

We'll learn a lot about the Raiders today. This is a do-or-die game for the 2010 season. If we win, our chances to contend remain alive. If we lose, it's hard to see us gaining two or more games on the Chargers and Chiefs over the ensuing four weeks.

At the beginning of the season, many of us said that we were in "prove it" mode. Today is the day to prove it. GO RAIDERS!

Damn RT, that's all you got? Sounds like you are deflated. I guess with Waste being your most dominant poster, your site takes a collective dive in the credibility department, that would deflate anyone. I feel bad for you RT, maybe one day you can start again, maybe under a new name?

I don't know, Jones. It wasn't meant to be a brilliant take, just resetting the thread and comments to focus on today's game. Been doing it all year before each game.

As for being deflated, yes, I've been deflated by the Raiders fading and regressing to old form over the past few weeks. For a while, it was fun to write about something different for once (ie: the Raiders actually playing competitive football).

It's going to stink if they don't right the ship today. A whole offseason looms, and I'd rather not sit through another winter of tired excuses and unfounded assurances.

"My dream scenario for a HUGE upset victory by the Raiders:

Start fast & furious with a combination of special teams plays, SD turnovers, and creative big offensive plays.

Get up by a 2 score lead early and establish a punishing running attack with both Bush & McFadden & Reece.

Continue to put the foot to the metal on D by employing some exotic blitz schemes that provides hits, hurries, sacks on Rivers and causes additional turnovers."

check, check, check, check, check

*ST punt fumble recovery
*2 SD turnovers
*bootleg call+ pick play to Ford
*punishing rushing attack with 2 score lead
*excellent pass rush including blitz package of safeties

Great 1st half ... need to continue to dominate the trenches, run the ball, take our shots, and keep Rivers running for his life.

What can you really say? This is not the same team that lost to the Steelers and Dolphins. That team could only muster 18 yards rushing, combined. Today’s team is the one that dominated the Broncos and Hawks.

Campbell was so good with play-action today, he faked out the TV coverage... twice!

NYRaider,

That one fake was so good the DL was celebrating stopping Bush for no gain.

I haven't seen fakes that good in years.

Having enjoyed this, that missed field goal in Arizona is still hauniting us.

Also, what could we have done with a solid offensive line the last two weeks. Pitt and the Fish overloaded to our left on first down.

But, the Dolts did some of that today, and Carlisle pulled to his left to give them some help.

Overll a good adjustment from the last two weeks. Next weeks game is now a must win so we can get back to within a game of the lead. I think the Dolts will take the Chefs.

Got to give the game ball to the O-LINE, WOW, they dominated. Front 4 was causing havoc as well, great TEAM effort. The coaches out coached Norv and comp. Reversing the team from what was happening once again. That's encouraging.

The Raiders, just plain and simple, kicked the shit out of S.D... S.D. will probably not be the same team the rest of the year because of the whooping they took. Physically dominating performance, McFadden made 1 mistake but more than made up for it. He was a MAN again today, some of the licks he laid out there today was MONSTER. Saw Schilens out there, hopefully he can be over the bug. Great win for the Raiders.

What an awesome and satisfying win. One of the best in years, in my opinion. Totally unexpected after the last two weeks.

This team is perplexing. How do they get handled v Pitts and Miami and come in and punish and dominate SD on both sides of the ball? A SD team that was hot, at home, wearing their gay baby blues, and tops against the run.

I especially love that all the so-called "experts" called this so wrong.

BTW, that hit by McClain was legit. On replays, you can see McClain come in with his shoulder and actually take contact from Sproles' helmet crown to the side of his.

Great win!

The best performance that I've seen from our OLine and DLine in a LONG ass time. Win the battles in the trenches and your team has an above average chance to come out on top.

When the Raiders are able to run the ball effectively, everything falls into place; time of possession, fresh D, play action pass, and exerting our will.

The JAX game next week is HUGE.

Upon further review, I have been one of the harshest critics of Langston Walker. However, the 15 yard penalty he drew on the third down incomplete that took us out of field goal range, I applaud the guy.

In fact, the Dolts’ player that was standing over Campbell could have been flagged for taunting. He was standing astride the prone Campbell in a major attempt to intimidate him. I’ve seen stuff like that called before, not often, but it is called on occasion.

What I will say is the Dolts player was lucky it wasn’t Steve Wisniewski that shoved him. He might have joined Sproles on the sidelines and be challenged to a one on one in the parking lot after the game.

I especially enjoyed the seven man jail break blitz on fourth down with less than two minutes left. It was a thing of beauty.

H - The Walker penalty took us out of FG range, but I can't disagree. Sometimes you need to let others know you're not going to take their s**t... like Seymour did. The Raiders are starting to act like... well, the Raiders.

The Giants have taken out +/- five QBs this year. There was a time when that was the Raiders MO.

The Chargers stopped running the ball early, and that played right into the Raiders hands.

The lopsided nature of the game was almost annoying in that, where was this team the previous two weeks?

Chargers were the #1 ranked D. You'd think after 11 games, that stat would actually mean something.

Hopefully, the Raiders can maintain their "pre-bye" form and make a run for the playoffs.

It's really hard to understand this team. Both players and coaches. I fully expected that the Raiders would get their asses handed to them after the last two weeks. Stunningly, they served up their best effort of the entire season. They simply shredded the prognosticators pick for the AFC SB rep.

I think what we are seeing is a transformation in progress - on two levels. While the players are learning how to be an NFL factor, Cable and staff are learning how to coach a potential champion.

I attributed the Pit loss to the players, coming out flat. I attributed the Mia loss to the coaches, exhibiting zero imagination.

Today, both players and coaches were brilliant and fully on the same page. This was the BEST coaching effort of Cable's career. This will go a long way towards Cable getting full faith and credit from the players.

At this point, I most fear our home game against the Colts. But if we can somehow manage to win the rest while SD beats KC next weekend, the division is ours.

The Jax East coast trip scares me... if we find a way to win on the East coast, I think we have a chance.

I don't see KC losing 3-4 against SD, StL, Tenn, and Oak left... especially with Tenn mailing in the season early.

Thus we have to find a way to 10 wins. Not happening if we a lay a turd on the east coast again, IMO.

Ind looks very vulnerable... and Denver sucks, but losing to Jax and then having to win out seems like an impossible task. Especially how inconsistent this team has been. Ultimately I hope that missed FG isn't what keeps us out of the playoffs!

Blanda,

From an overall coaching effort, this may be Cable’s best performance from an in game standpoint.

Case in point, the challenge to Gates’ catch. Yes, it was close and under normal circumstances it probably would not have been challenged. But it gave the defense a protracted rest while the review went on.

Even after the play was upheld I swear Cable winked at somebody, and he was smiling at one of the officials. From the replays there was probably less than a 5% chance it would be overturned. A normal timeout would have been your standard two minutes. This one gave the Dolts something to think about during the stoppage.

Correction on my earlier post. The jailbreak blitz was with four minutes to play, not two.

As for winning the division, the numbers don’t stack up very good. Basically, we have to win out and the Chefs split their last four. While that is possible, three of our games are against teams fighting for playoff spots. Indy looks normal and beatable now, but they still have Manning. Jacksonville won the way we did. Hard running, only threw 19 passes and solid defense. The one good thing is Tennessee isn’t supposed to be as good as the Dolts.

The Dolt’s only chance is to beat the Chefs. The Neutered Sheep are playing fairly well of late and could beat the Chefs at home.

Anyway you look at it it’s a tough row to hoe. But hey, I’m the infernal optimist.

As far as being a playoff contender, you have to first be competitive in your division. We have definitely done that. So, my optimism continues to grow.

In order for us to make the playoffs, KC has to loose to one team besides us. If they do, and we run the rest of the schedule, KC can't slip in ahead of us because we will have beaten them twice. We only need enough help so that KC gets beat by one team that isn't us.

Hard to say how it all unfolds but here is what I project and want to see...

"SD" knocks off "KC" and wins out the rest of their season....10-n-6

"KC" than wins 2 in a row but gets a loss to us the last week of the season...10-n-6

Raiders win out the rest of the season...10-n-6

3 way tie but we are 6-n-0 in division so they sit home and we play at home in the 1st rd against Pitts....

It's not likely we can run the table, so the Chiefs may need to lose three for us to have a real shot. I feel confident SD will bounce back and beat KC next week, and the Raiders have to beat KC in order to have any shot.

That leaves the Rams and the Titans. IMO, one of these two teams will have to step up to the plate and help the Raiders.

As pointed out by others, it may come down to a missed 33-yard FG earlier in the season. What a shame that would be; yet it also would mark real progress for the Raiders.

News flash:

In our last eight games we are 5-3. In the three losses we had seven or fewer penalties and the team that beat us had more penalties than we did.

In the five wins we had ten or more penalties and had more penalties than our opponents.

I'm not recommending we go out and just committ penalties for the sake of committing penalties.

But, I am saying when we are more agressive, and play with more abandon we play better. Just go out an play hard, use your best technique and don't worry about the penalties.

It goes back to Cable's philosophy of Cut it Loose. If you're going to make a mistake, just make it at 100 MPH.

But, at least we didn't have 12 men on the field on consecutive plays. We can count.

Nice to be actually considering scenarios in Dec for a change!

I'm going to root for SD just so we don't HAVE to win out to make the playoffs.

With a win vs KC, we own the first tie-breaker with both SD and KC...

I see squeaking in at 9-7 more likely than winning out.

Especially how horribly this team (and our QB) can play at the drop of the hat.

2:48 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

To finish 9-7 and win the division means KC would have to lose 3 of 4, including to us, plus SD will have to lose once.

KC 8-4 goes 1-3 and ends up 9-7
SD 6-6 goes 3-1 and ends up 9-7
Oak 6-6 goes 3-1 and ends up 9-7

Raiders win tiebreakers.

KC plays SD, Rams, Titans and Raiders. Losing three is doable, assuming SD and Raiders must beat them, and they split with the Rams and Titans.

Raiders need to split with Jags and Indy, then beat Denver and KC (that assumes the Raiders can go 6-0 in the division - a longshot for any team).

The above senario makes the last game against KC equiv. to a Super Bowl for any Raiders fan that followed the team for the past seven years.

Actually, even If we run the table KC still has to lose 2 games for us to snatch the Western Division. Of course our last game is against the Chiefs in KC.

This is so funny....After all that "BS" about the Raider Way being outdated and un-useful in the modern NFL....

– Rather than use the previous game as a scouting report and blitz San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers into submission, the Raiders instead rushed primarily with their front four and redirected pass routes with man-to-man defense. It was old-style Raiders football, apparently still effective when executed properly.

“We only rushed four and we lined up and played man coverage on the outside,” Huff said. “ We pressed and kind of threw off their timing. Our front four got there and we made plays.”

We also blitzed at times but mainly that was an add-in...Something to keep them off-balance...We showed it often but pulled out and into coverage....

NYRaider,

That’s some math you did on the scenarios, and I’m a math minor. Winning it in a three way would be a sharp poke in the eye to the Dolts and Chefs. I would have to raise a glass to Cable on that one.

Maybe it was last year, but Cable was emphasizing division games as a starting point for turning things around. It was something like all games are important, especially division games. It makes sense, because that is where you can make up ground the fastest.

If we beat Jax and the Dolts pull it off against the Chefs the Coliseum needs to be SRO for the Geldings. Remember, we may have rolled them like a beach ball in a high wind, but we have split with them the last two years losing at home both years.

All teams really have to know about the Raiders is choke off their running game and they're done (see Pitt and Miami). To wit, Campbell is a different QB when he is forced to throw.

IMO, 8-8 is a realistic goal and would represent sound improvement for a team that couldn't break five wins for seven straight years.

Gruden was 8-8 before he found real success, and he didn't have to recover from the depths that Cable has had to deal with.

At 6-6, Cable seems to have survived despite his former relationship with Kiffin, a mostly dismantled locker room, a completely inept QB (in Russell), a micro-managing owner, his inability to playcall his own offense, a bizarre exchange with an assistant that resulted in a broken jaw, accusations of domestic violence, and a QB controversy.

Cable's a survivor, and the team seems to be taking on his survival skills.

It will take all his coaching and personal skills to get this team over the hump.

"NYR" brings up a very interesting point:

Cable is a "Fighter"...Ya see it in everything with the man...From his time fighting in the arts to his playing time and coaching style...And especial the "JawBone" thing....

Yes the players are responding to that...Seymour is also a fighter as is "MM"/Houston-n-"DeathRo"....Now they start to feed off the energy and get the job done...It's now rubbing off on the "OL" as we saw this past Sunday...

Our "RB"s have gained an attitude now too...

That "Fighting Spirit" is what makes a man dig down deep inside himself and pull out what wasn't there...The will to dominate...To WIN....

Maybe this is the common ground that will keep the Cable-Davis relationship a float....They are both damn good fighters....They both have made mistakes but they don't turn their cheeks they just get up and run back in for more...

If this team can continue to adopt that image inside themselves we will have something really powerful back in "OakTown"...

You will know you've been in a fight...A WAR!!!...

To Continue the point:

The old Raiders were that team nobody wanted to play....Especially not after a loss because we were way too angry and would take it out on them...

Looking back over the last 3...We came out of the bye flat...Seemed to lack the emotion we were playing with when we went in....Meanwhile Pitts took the attitude to be very physical with us...They did...We lost...

Than Miami came in and said they were going to get very physical with the Raiders....They did...We lost...But they can't find healthy bodies to take the field now...

Sunday we got up!!!...Played "SmashMouth" and left them on their knees...

Damn I hope that carries over to this week against the "Jacks" because we really need that type of attitude going in....We need to play "SmashMouth" with them and take what we want...

Than we come home to 2 very winnable games against very weak "D"s...."Donkey"s -n- Colts....

PantyRaider....Show The Will To Dominate!!!!/_

We don't face another strong "D" until "KC" who just gave up 161yds @ 7yd ave to the "MuleHead"s....

H, when was the last time you remember being able to say, "the Raiders are 5-3 over the last 8 games?" Must have felt weird coming off your fingertips. No?

Panty, this was exactly old style-no longer relevant Al Davis football. I've said all along that it's relevant as long as they have the players to do it. I watched them run 17-Bob-Trey-O on Sunday more times than I could count.

My feeling is that we have the fastest, best secondary in the NFL. Our D-line is finally just starting to catch up, and our LBs are far superior than in years past.

The rebuild is nearly complete. We need another WR and and some O-line help. Additionally we need someone to step up in a leadership position on offense. That's just beginning to be Campbell. If they keep at it, McFadden and Bush will step up as well.

The rebuild is complete. All we need now is tweeking.

"BR"....

I love it...Almost just like old times...Even when down the belief was there we will come back...

Like I said almost...We haven't come back much yet but it's building toward that now...

I'm not sure "JC" is going to be the man to lead us up that hill...I think we go after Vince Young or Vick and they are the leaders we will need...

A vet "WR" and I'm pimping Plexico "TheGunDumb" Burris who should come at a bargain price to get his ass back in the NFL like Vick did...

"CB" may still be a need also...

"C" may also be a need...

"RG"-n-"RT" may already be on the team in Looper -n- Campbell...

But the bulk of the re-build is already done...On that we agree...

Got to admit you are right. Probably felt a little weird reading it.

But, my greater point was about playing agressively, letting it all hang out.

I watched the game again last night and at one point in the fourth quarter the camera angle was behind McNeil the Dolts RT. As Houston was getting down into his stance he was staring McNeil in the eyes with the biggest grin on his face. He was having some fun.

Ok, this is absurd.

We swept the Dolts. Basically handed them an ass whipping on Sunday and have the same record at 6-6.

But, in BSPN's power rankings, the Dolts are two spots above us. They are at 14 and we are at 16. I've got no argument with our placement, but come on, the Dolts two spots ahead of us?????????????

I think it is pretty clear that the Raiders "man" defense had been failing primarily due to the lack of QB pressure combined with soft coverages.

The Raiders still fall back on this occassionally, and usually get burned when they do.

However, the success of this defense rests largely on a new found pass rush and tighter press coverages in the secondary.

That doesn't change the fact that most of the NFL has figured out how to play zone coverages that the Raiders still lack. And these zone coverages are responsible for a higher turnover count, as players tend to see (and read) the QB better when they're not chasing a WR downfield. In addition, the secondary tends to react to a run quicker in zone than in man coverage.

The real goal is to be dynamic in your defensive scheme, and not rely so much on a technique that other teams will always recognize.

That said; if it works, don't try and fix it now. The Raiders should stick with their bread and butter and, as Cable says, cut it lose.

12:12 PM
Blogger H said...

NYRaider,

Our man coverage is not the same without Nnamdi on the field. But, that goes without saying.

Nnamdi wasn't back all the way against the Fish and McFadden played a lot. Miami went after him hard. He has good skills but he's still a rookie and got burned a lot.

Against the Dolts we didn't blitz a lot, but we did blitz early with success. The first sack was a safety blitz. Another blitz or two in the first quarter and they are thinking about it all game long.

Our top sack guy is tied for 27th in the league, but as a team we are tied for first.

PR - don't get your panties in a bunch over the Q&A I posted. I don't condone it. If that’s a jab at Al Davis it is disrespectful beyond belief. I’m surprised Herrera wasn't there to flex his paper muscles and escort that person out of the PC.

And how does the fact that any of us have or have not played competitive sports have any bearing on why the Raiders can't figure out how to be competitive?

Suddenly you're more qualified to judge WRs because you played pop warner football and have a booster club membership card? Don't you realize how ridiculous that is?

As for the Q&A, I was genuinely shocked by the statement. That's why (and the only reason) I posted it. In the few years I've been here at RT, I have never dissed the man in that way, and don’t expect others to, especially professional media. That’s totally uncalled for and, as I said, unprofessional. I remain a fan of Al Davis, despite that I disagree with the way he runs the team. Whether you chose to believe that or not really makes no difference to me. It’s a fact.

Ok, something very strange happened.

The Q&A I posted this morning was verbatim from J-Mac’s blog. I went back to it and found the content in question had been removed. I then searched the web for another transcript and found the same language as now posted on J-Mac’s site.

I assure you, this is not a hoax, at least not by me.

The perpetrator is either the author of the Q&A section I read this morning or it was removed (A) because it was distasteful and classless, or (B) to protect the media individual who made the comment.

I would like to email J-Mac and ask, but I am unable to find his email address (which is no surprise considering all the nuts he would hear from, today me being one).

I have no answer. If you want to believe I made it up, I have no proof that I didn’t. However, I assure you I did not. As I said, I posted it verbatim, in pure shock that it was said. I have stood behind every post I've ever made on this site. I have no problem accepting what is fact and acknowledging when I'm wrong.

However, this is pure mystery. Perhaps it will surface again in some fashion. Hard to believe that could get put out there then removed without a trace.

A few months ago I was having worries about McClain thinking he reminded me too much of Morrison.

After the hit McClain laid out last week, I have laid my worries to rest.

Those are game changing hits... its how Pitts keeps teams from continually going over the middle for years. If you don't have anyone laying PIPE after the catch, they just keep going across the middle.

Mitchell had some nice hits too...

....further... its also why the Raiders have sucked for so many years. The opposing QB's just kept abusing our middle, especially on third and longs... and nobody ever paid the price for it. We lock down the corners but leave the middle vulnerable... it means tons of excruciating 10 minute drives.

Enforcers over the middle are as much of a key to the Raider defense as base-4 pressure, and lock down M2M covers.

The last time we had it was Romo, and RWood.

We played in a SB that year.

don't know if they were asked this way but check it out...I highlighted them

Q: So you expect him to be out there this week, or do you have to wait until the corpse wakes up and tells you what to do?

Cable: Just depends on the health at that position.

Q: What went into decision to screw Wags’ boy Nick Miller by making him inactive, fair catch on the 4, perhaps?

Cable: Numbers. You only get 45, plus your 3rd quarterback and we’re only going to dress four receivers, at least at this point.

Q: Have you addressed the team about the fact that you are an unqualified bitch boy for the crypt keeper Al Davis?

Cable: Absolutely.

H, my thoughts were there with yours. Successful Raider teams, through the years, always competed for the most flags thrown in the season. It was almost like the Raiders considered it to be just another record to be broken.

The only time they seemed to break that trend was when Gruden was HC and Gannon was under center.

But it certainly validates a good "conspiracy theory." I've always maintained the the Refs make every effort to break Raider momentum. If the Raiders start moving the ball, the Refs start throwing flags.

The earlier Raider incarnations never gave a sh!t. "Go ahead, throw your flags. We'll just gain an extra 15 yards on the next play."

The penalties came back in Callahan's second year during Gannon's injury. That's why he called them "the dumbest team in football." But the old guys were leaving, and we didn't have the talent to equalize the penalties.

Also, I'd like to point out the reason SD lost last Sunday. Rivers couldn't defeat our MAN COVERAGE! See? If you have the right personnel, you don't have to imitate the rest of the NFL and go with the Cover 2.

Gary,

Execution is part of the equation. But, this is a game that is based on physical aggression. Blocking, tackling, blitzing, sacking, etc.

If you don’t “execute” with “aggression” the other guy is going to kick your ass. We were pushed around and kicked around by the Squealers. We had 7 penalties for 55 yards, they had 14 for 163. They were the aggressor in that game.

Against the Dolts, we had 13 for 105 while they had 3 for 19 and one of theirs was for 12 men on the field. We were the aggressor. Yes, false starts ain’t good, especially at home. The other one that drives me nuts is block in the back. Like Madden used to say, “If you can read his name, don’t hit him.”

But, if you are going to play tight man coverage properly, you are going to get flagged on occasion. If you are going to time your blitz properly you are going to be caught offside on occasion.

In the game of football, the aggressor sets the tone.

But, for officiating, year in and year out, penalized teams don’t change much. You can change personnel, coaches, etc., but your reputation precedes you. In the 70’s and 80’s the Miami Fish were perennially amongst the least penalized. Guess who was head of the competition committee? Don Shula.

Also, you can’t tell me that in a game with the Patsies that they don’t hold, yet they are rarely called for holding.

The bottom line is, if you are worried about a penalty, and that is what is on your mind, you play less aggressively. You’ve got to believe you can overcome on if it happens.

Phil Villipiano said it best, if you are being held, or cut blocked or whatever and the refs won’t call it, then you have to do something about it. Sometimes that means a shot to the throat or hands to the face, or whatever, but you make them pay physically.

I will agree about the stupid penalties like False Starts -n- Illegal Procedure that don't intimidate anyone...That is NOT aggression at all it's a lack of concentration on the play...

But other penalties like Off Sides are from being aggressive on "D"...

My point is that some of these flags are crap from the "Zebra"s and NOT legitimate mistakes at all...They come in spurts at critical junctures of the game...Usually they are momentum killers that get thrown at the most unfortunate time and when reviewing the play there was no infraction to be called...

False Start/Off Sides/Holding/Illegal Contact/Pass Interference and such are all judgment calls that they use to kill drives or sustain drives and they come in spurts when they need to gain control of a game...

If we are playing well the flags come out but many times when we are disgustingly inept the flags stay in the pocket...That doesn't make sense...You would expect that when playing horrid there would be more infractions to call...

PR - You are a bald faced liar and a hypocrite with zero integrity. You don’t even know what that means. Because if you did, you wouldn't be here pointing fingers.

You’re on here everyday bashing Jason Campbell, calling him “JustCrap” and defaming Al Davis in the process. Here’s all the proof I need (and a very small sample at that).

PR Quotes:

“So we are now stuck the rest of the season with "JustCrap" as our primary option...”

“Both "D-Mac" -n- Bush were former "QB"s at a lower level and are healthy -n- prolley bring more to the table than "JustCrap" ever could....”

“PantyRaider....Where's "JePurple" [Russell, another handpicked Al Davis QB] When We Need'em!!!/_”

“I'm trying but it's difficult to keep faith starring at "JustCrap"s dumb looks.”

“Play-Action is now useless...Who will bite... Maybe quick hitting pass plays but with "JustCrap"s hesitation how do we do that...”

“All last off-season you couldn't make "JePurple" complete a pass in Madden "10" and now this off-season with Madden "11" you wont be able to get "JustCrap" to complete a pass either.”

Al Davis Quote: “I really liken this team a great deal to the team of 1980, in which the great Jim Plunkett pulled us out of the doldrums, took us to the Super Bowl as a wild card.... I see this young Jason Campbell as a football player like I saw Jim Plunkett. He has everything. He was 13-0 in college, at Auburn, he can throw up the field, he can run, he’s big, he’s smart. I really predict great things for him.”

Your abusive posturing against Jason Campbell is nothing less than a defamation of Al Davis.

So you see, you are a liar and a hypocrite with no integrity. You have some balls pointing fingers at anybody.

The jury has deliberated. You are guilty of lying and being a hyprocrite with zero integrity.

In your own words,

“Deflect All You Want...Wiggle-n-Squirm Too...But There Is No Escaping Your Perpetual Lies.”

Billicheat doesn't do as much holding defensively until the playoffs... especially against passing teams. He knows the refs have a tighter whistle, thus mugs, holds, trips, eye gouges... whatever it takes to disrupt the pattern. For the most part he's gotten away with it over the years... the most glaring example was the SB vs StL.

Chiefs' Cassel has appendectomy; no word on Sunday status

Are you kidding me!!!...

Look at this freakin shit...Just in time Baby!!!...

Quarterback Matt Cassel, a key reason the Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as contenders and lead the AFC West late in the season, underwent an appendectomy Wednesday.

The Chiefs said the procedure was a success, and they expect Cassel to return to work this week. They didn't say he would be ready to play Sunday when the Chiefs (8-4) travel to San Diego for a showdown with the Chargers (6-6), who trail Kansas City by two games in the division.

Brodie Croyle, who is 0-9 as an NFL starter and hasn't appeared in a game all year, took most of the practice snaps Wednesday. The Chiefs also signed quarterback Tyler Palko to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

I find it amusing, ironic, hypocritical, and frankly sad, that you love to bash "JustCrap" Campbell (and indirectly Al David) yet you back up DHB like he saved your life.

Jason Campbell, like the Raiders team as a whole, has had an up & down season performance-wise. Yet through it all he has been a team first, first class, highly resilient professional.

You can bring up all the stats in the world or just talk rubbish but J.Campbell has PLAYED a BIG part in 5 of our 6 wins;

SD x 2-> Excellent QB play, leadership, and game management.

KC -> Bounced back from a rough 1st half and made the plays (yes with the help of his teammates) to win in OT.

DEN, SEA -> Solid game management, error free, turnover free QB play.

In this last game vs. SD, Campbell demonstrated good mobility to avoid the rush, buy more time, and make some critical 1st downs and a TD with his legs. He is no longer looking over his shoulder and seemed especially confident and poised on Sunday.

If DHB has a good game, I gladly praise him. If Campbell has a good game, you keep up the same bull-$hit act. Why?

I thought this was all about the team, the Raiders success ... Is it because you've pinned yourself into a corner by continuing to bad mouth your team's starting QB?

Do us all a favor and lose the confrontational, internet tough guy act.

As usual, you are talking in circles. How is it remotely possible to give Campbell credit if you are (a) still calling him "JustCrap" and (b) are completely clueless about the game of football.

NEWSFLASH:

Jason Campbell played brilliantly as the QB of YOUR team this past Sunday. To deny that is silly, foolish, and ignorant.

You write, "And last week he only threw 16 freakin passes...Now you want to include him in the top rankings of NFL "QB"s."

Here's a clue, boy wonder:

Jason Campbell had a QB rating of 105.5 on Sunday.

Jason Campbell ran for a 9 yard TD run on 4 and 1.

Jason Campbell ran for 12 yards on 2-9 for a 1st down.

Jason Campbell ran for 9 yards on 3-8 for a 1st down that kept a drive alive that led to a TD.

Jason Campbell threw a beautiful TD pass to Ford and had ZERO interceptions for the day.

Jason Campbell completed 62.5% of his passes on Sunday.

Jason Campbell led the Raiders by managing the game and coming up BIG when the Chargers cut the lead to 21-13 by promptly leading us on the ensuing drive to a 7 play, 5:24 time of possession TD to ice the game.

No doubt, Campbell has been inconsistent this season just like the team. When our running game is clicking, he is a solid, productive, game manager who is a BIG part of our success.

So no one mistakes my past posts on Campbell, let me make a few things clear:

#1: I'm a Raider fan and Jason Campbell is our starting QB for 2010. I'll worry about 2011 in 2011.

#2: I support Campbell because he seems to be a good guy, very professional, and has some admirable traits such as being a team first guy, humble, hard worker, and don't forget, a top notch athlete.

#3: With Campbell as the starting QB, the Raiders have won 4 of their last 5 games. (Den, Sea, KC, SD wins; MIA didn't play; Pitt loss)

Calico,

I second your three points on Campbell. While I said Gradkowski should return to the starting lineup when healthy, it appears he can’t stay that way. Cable was a man of his word and started Ski. But, now it’s Campbell so I support him.

He’s a good guy and one hell of an improvement over Russell. Aside from Gradkowski the team seems to be getting healthy for the first time this season. The Chaz is back and might see more field time this Sunday, Miller and McClain have enough practice time now that they can go light during the week and still contribute.

As for Cassel, it would be very dangerous to put him on the field this Sunday. A blow to his side could rupture the incision and bust the stitches inside and cause internal bleeding. As a coach or organization do you want that on your hands?

From a personal standpoint, I want him healthy and playing. If we win this thing I don’t want to hear about how “lucky” we were with him out a game or two. Gallery was out almost a month with his. But, Gallery's was an emergeney procedue and this more invasive.

I had a small hardware store put in my back in September. Even though I “feel” better than I have in ten years (except for the knees, ankles and shoulder – getting old ain’t for wimps) the doc told me it’s still six more months before I can consider resuming “normal” activities.

Cable has changed the schedule this week to mirror east coast times. Good move. Might not work, but it gets the team more in tune with a 10:00 starting time.

Gary,

You don’t just turn blocking schemes and such on and off like a light switch. As for the St. Louis Super Bowl against the Patsies, that was a season long complaint against the Patsies and the league decided to take a look at it after the Patsies had won. It seems the Patsies can go several games in a row without a single holding penalty. Somehow things like that don’t compute.

John Madden used to say Dwight Stephenson was the best holder in the league. He almost never got called, and the Fish went six or more consecutive seasons leading the league with giving up the fewest sacks.

Even today and last season the Fish are amongst the least penalized teams (top five) in the league.

It's just my opinion, but aside from the obvious things such as false starts, and offsides, reputation influences how the refs look at things.

Hell, two or three times it sure looked like SD was lined up in the neutral zone, but no call was made.

DHB has currently been suplanted as a starter. He may trot out there on the first play, but his time on the field is greatly diminished. And that is the biggest barometer.

And, it might go down even further with The Chaz back. His biggest contribution lately is on the end around.

The greater point is in the last eight games Campbell started seven of those and we are 5 - 2 in those games. And, this from a guy who said Ski should get the start when healthy.

Campbell relieved against SD the first time and led a comeback. The win was sealed by the defensive TD, but he took the team down the field to take the lead.

Early on last Sunday he "carried" the team with his running for a TD and and two first downs to extend drives. Half way through the second quarter he ws the teams leading rusher with almost 40 yards.

You can carry a team in different ways.

I dissagree. He took advantage of the situation and made something out of nothing.

He provided leadership by example and two of his runs set up TD's.

Right now even Peyton Manning isn't having that kind of affect.

Might he continue his inconsistency? Possibly. But, if he's consistant five out of seven games, then we win 11 games a year on average instead of loosing 11.

Here's the legitimate rebuttal to your complete rubbish:

Jason Campbell is our starting QB.

I want the Raiders to win.

In 5 of our 6 wins, Jason Campbell played an integral role in our team's success.

BTW, in case you didn't get the memo, the Raiders best chance to win is with (a) a good rushing attack (b) Campbell managing the game (c) good D (d) good special teams.

Personally, I don't care how many pass attempts Campbell has in any given game. I don't care who gets the credit for the win. And finally, I know this will kill you but, YES, I want to see DHB do well and contribute to the team's success.

Campbell did everything and more to execute the game plan. On top of completing 62.5% of his passes, throwing 1 TD and 0 INTs, he ran for pivotal 1st downs and a TD. When the team needed him to make a big completion to ice the game, guess what, he executed the play action pass to Murphy to perfection even fooling the cameramen.

Chief Squaw Waste (CSW) -

You are ABSOLUTELY right ... the QB has far more responsibility than a WR. In 5 of our 6 wins, Campbell's play was instrumental in the wins. The reality is that Campbell has been more successful than any Raider QB since Gannon in 2002.

As far as DHB, he has been a significant contributor in 1 game out of 12, the Sea Chickens victory. Each Raider from 1 to 53 has a role to play. The QB is naturally in the spotlight and carries the largest responsibility.

My disappointment in DHB is that he has virtually been in the witness protection program since October in terms of production. 5 games with little to no contributions. The coaching staff has finally and rightfully dialed down DHB's snaps the last few weeks. If and when DHB starts earning more snaps due to productivity, the team will benefit.

I'm with CJ regarding Campbell. Campbell has the type of personality that takes guys a little while to get used to. He's simply not an outgoing type. Perfectly nice guy, but he's not outgoing like Grad.

That said, I can understand Cable's comment that it has taken him a little time to gel with the team. There's absolutely nothing wrong with his stats in games where he's performed well. He is an excellent game manager, usually very accurate, and he avoids interceptions.

As for the low number of passes, Panty, welcome to the Raiders. I remember Plunk frequently had low numbers like that - because they had Allen and the Raiders had a run first team. Now we have McFadden and Bush, and the Raiders are a run first team.

Something tells me he isn't happy with the way he left there.

For the record, the chip block by DHB that freed Ford for the TD was a borderline pick. Picks are illegal, but it worked.

SD tried the same thing later, but in very poor execution their pick guy was late, bounced off our defender and interfered with the primary receiver.

No flags were thrown in either case.

Got to give Campbell credit for standing tall through all this.

Campbell's primary weakness was revealed when the Raiders didn't play well as a team, so maybe no other Raiders QB could have done better. Who knows?

Sure I wanted Ski, but as I look at the season, Campbell is largely the reason the Raiders have done well.

You can't say, well he only passed 16 times last Sunday. This is the guy that touches the ball on every play. His game management skills are solid, and he knows how to protect the ball.

Therefore, I am anxious to see him play out the season. It's a great opportunity for Campbell AND the Raiders. He'll either grow with the team, or the Raiders will see clearly they need to go another direction.

H - With that attitude, Henderson needs to get extra snaps this week.

Blanda,

Exactly. If you are getting 350 yards of offense and winning, what difference does the ratio of run to pass you have make.

Campbell also had a 300 yard pasing game against the Sea Chickens.

Matt Cassel passed for over 200 yards five of twelve games. Three of the those five games were losses. Yet the midia is all a twitter about what the Chefs will do if he doesn't play.

As for Campbell passing only 16 times, he completed 62.5%. The fewer times the ball hits the ground, the fewer times you have to throw it.

The guy we are having to defend this Sunday only passed 19 times. He had a better completion percentage, but a lower yards per attempt average and a much lower yards per completion average.

It's not always how many times you throw it, but more what happens when you do.

Take, I completely concur.

Here's mine:

My feelings toward Campbell remain mixed. There's no arguing with his results (better than anyone since Gannon). At the same time, I just don't know why, but he gives me a feeling of ambivalence. Should I be excited about him leading our offense in 2011? Can he get us where we need to go? I'm still not sure.

10:53 AM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

RT, I think the reason we're a little ambivalent about Campbell is that the knock on him is that "he lacks passion." That was the same knock on Russell. But the problem is that Russell's lack of passion was drug induced. Campbell is just quiet. Because he's quiet, he fails to ignite the team in the huddle the way Grad can. But then, Grad didn't do such a good job of that himself in his last start.

But there is such a thing as a "quiet leader." According to Cable, Campbell is beginning to find that space.

I'm hoping and trusting that he's right.

Is that sucking up enough to garner a few brownie points?

As for your points on Campbell, Plunkett wasn't a firey leader either. He just kept getting up over and over again refusing to stay down. Quiet toughness.

Campbell is a little bit that way, but he was thrown into the lurch where Plunk got two years to learn and recover.

Compared to the first two games he is doing reasonably well. Slowly he's becoming more consistant. The problem is his lows have been very low.

I still think he can be a servicable quarterback along the lines of a Brad Johnson. He might surprise and make the Pro Bowl next year. My preference is Super Bowl.

Blogger Raider Take said...

I hope that's the case, Blanda. I guess Eli Manning is sort of like that.

I would prefer to see more fire and brimstone, which is what you see with most top quarterbacks. Part of it could be having been subjected to so many un-passionate-looking QBs over the years, Collins, Brooks, Walter, Russell...That's what makes Grad such a breath of fresh air, that obvious excitement and fire.

Re: Football which is what I usually post about and NEVER adversely about posters personal lives outside of football savvy....

This week doesn't look good...I suspect a set-back just when we are poised for opportunity with "KC" about to flounder....Unless the coaches can come up with another great gameplan that limits the adverse effects of having "JustCrap" at "QB"....

He already had his "A" game in very limited passing service....I'm not a believer that he will be consistent enough to put that performance back to back...The team played very aggressive football with a high level of emotion against "SD"....Can they duplicate that in back to back games....

Those are two legitimate reasons for concerns this week...

On the positive side which there always is one:

Chaz has returned....Zack -n- Murphy are getting healthy....The targets are there if the "QB" makes the plays....Their "D" is weak against the pass and average against the run....

The "D" is fired-up because our "DT" Henderson and "OLB" Whimbley are X-Jags who have an attitude to deliver....Our "D" on paper is better than their "OL" and we share the lead in Sacks...Their passing game is almost as weak as ours but that's into the teeth of our "D"...

Raiders.....6-n-7
Denver......OUT....

Allot is on the line and how much can we depend upon "JustCrap" to get the job done...

I would have Kile ready to play...

I would take a very serious look at the "WildCat" as an alternative scheme if we flounder early...

I would send my "D" in all out pursuit at their "QB" who has shown some of the same deficiencies as "JustCrap"....

I would intimidate their "WR"s/"RB"s with the kind of hits we saw against "SD"....

I would do what ever is necessary to limit the adverse effects of being weak at the "QB" position in hopes we can pull this one out....

Good point...They're on top of their division so prolley don't feel the pressure the way we do...Lose and they're still tied with Indy for 1st...

They are a -43 in net points so when they lose they lose big...

Meanwhile out in the "MuleValley" they continue to implode...

Broncos rookie CB Cox arrested in sexual-assault case

- Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Perrish Cox has been arrested for investigation of felony sexual assault, police said Friday.

Michelle Kivela, the public information officer for the city of Lone Tree, Colo., said Cox was arrested Thursday night following an investigation into an Oct. 28 incident and was transported to a nearby county jail.

Cox appeared Friday in Douglas County Court in nearby Castle Rock wearing a gray prison uniform. His feet were shackled and he was escorted by an armed sheriff's deputy.

Chiefs QB Cassel still can't practice, listed as doubtful vs. Bolts

Wearing sweat pants and a shirt while his teammates worked out in pads, Cassel appeared to do nothing but light tosses during the short time the media was allowed to watch Friday's practice.

If the "Dolt"s can deal with the run they should take this one away at home...

Here is a good look at the current "PO" picture....We be in the hunt!!...

I see no reason why the Raiders can't win this week. They are so determined to reverse their east coast fortunes, they are setting their alarms for 5am to set their body clocks.

John Henderson is my x-factor. He will disrupt their line and cause problems for their run and pass offense.

This is a must win playoff game!

Blanda,

Agreed. The more we get Reece the ball, the better.

He can run in the open field like no other FB around today.

Another big key to beating Jax is, don't quit on the running attack.

Against SD, we were running the ball with success right from the start.
But againt Pitt, & Fish, they stopped it early, and we just gave it up.

Keep running against Jax. Sooner or later, the holes will open, and big gains will be there.

Raider00-n-"BR"

The one area where I could disagree is if we can use the big play to score early and take them out of their run game playing keep-up....But we may not be able to put up enough early points to accomplish that task...

If we slug it out with them they will be punishing our run "D" the same way we will be trying to punish theirs thinking eventually we will wear down and they will be able to make the big plays rushing or open up the passing yds....

We should have the advantage early against their predominately weak Pass "D"...If only we had a "QB" who could consistently get the ball down field on time -n- on target....But we don't....

So most likely we will be in a slug-fest to see who comes out on top....But maybe...Just maybe if they have their hands full dealing with our run than we could open up the playbook and go downtown....

PantyRaider....In A Slug-Fest Injuries Could Hurt Both Clubs In The End And Ruin Our Hopes Of Success Later!!!!/_

A very physical game makes you pay a price....Will that price be too high...

"Everyone please post one football-only comment and lets go from there."

Nothing would please me more than coming to Raider Take and us discussing Raider football!

It will be interesting to me to see how Kirk Morrison performs for JAX and Big John Henderson & Quinten Groves perform for us.

A motivated and healthy Big John could make a big impact in trying to contain MJD in the running game.

Pats’ Spikes suspended for rest of regular season

The NFL has suspended New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes(notes) four games without pay for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Spikes, the team’s second leading tackler, will miss the rest of the regular season, starting Sunday at the Chicago Bears. The rookie drafted in the second round from Florida will be eligible to rejoin the active roster after the finale at home against Miami, and would be eligible for the playoffs.

Shit...Why allow him back for the "PO"s....You can bet if this was our 2nd rd pick Houston he would be out into next season...

The "Rat" is imploding in "DC"...

I like this and it's good reason that we didn't get that "QB"....Although he still was prolley better than "JustCrap"....

McNabb is not the leader they thought he'd be, not the worker they hoped he was, and clearly he is not the consistent playmaker they believed he'd be. McNabb is never going to be a 60-percent completion passer, or ever be consistent again -- period -- therefore he must have an outstanding supporting cast, something the Skins offense is lacking.

Now this evaluation of this weeks game:

. Are the Raiders the new kings of December? They have won four of their last five in December and have a huge game in Jacksonville this week. Can they shut down the run game of the Jags? Can the Jags shut down the Raiders' run game? This game might only take 2 hours to finish.

Back during Shell I, the media says that Al Davis didn't like Terry Robiskie as the Raiders OC. If that was true, I part company with Al on that topic.

I remember one game, I can't remember the opponent, where the Raiders needed the win to secure a playoff spot against another playoff caliber team. Robiskie spent the entire week telling the press that we needed to be who we are and run the ball. He said he was very confident that the Raiders could roll all over the other team.

At game time, on the Raiders first possession, the other team stacked the box for the whole drive. Robiskie opened the game running nothing but pass plays designed to counter a stacked box, drove down the field and scored.

Maybe it's because Davis didn't like Marcus Allen and he felt Robiskie sided with Allen. In his book, Allen says that Robiskie (and Shell) would play him despite being told not to by Davis. In one account, Davis confronted Robiskie after playing Allen in a game, but backed off because Allen had scored twice to help the Raiders win.

Well, there's more than one side to any story, NY. But my point is that this would be a great time to pull that old strategy out of the closet.
