Steelers Gameday Thread

Here we are, on the cusp of something special. If the Raiders pull this off, if they beat the Steelers on the road at this juncture, it will be epic. It will be a national story. And it will take the narrative of the season to the next level, and to a place we haven't been in ages. Go RAIDERS!

Strange. I thought I published a post on the last thread, but now I see it didn't take... or my computer is playing games with me.

I'll keep this simple.

OK...Old business 1st as usual:

"CJ"-n-Gary...

#1...Ford had separation from the "DB"....There were no hands on him and that came after the "DB" closed the separation...In other words the coverage was not tight...Ford had the inside...

#1...The pass was so far inside that Ford had to dive for the ball...A perfectly thrown pass as "CJ" described would have caught him in stride so he would not have had to go to the ground....

#3...Ford was in single coverage and there was not another "DB" within 10 yds of him..."ONLY" the "DB" with single coverage...Thus this was NOT threading the needle...There was no worry of the ball being taken by another "DB" inside Ford..."JC" had a clear lane to throw the ball in there on target but went wide left anyway...

#4...I never said it wasn't a good play...I argued "CJ"s definition of being "Perfect"....Perfect would have resulted in a score...

Ford will now get a chance to show he is for real...If "JC" can get him the ball...Thing with Ford is get it close and he goes for it...That's his strength and I like's it...

PantyRaider, you seem hell bent on trying to get me to apologize for observing that the Raiders sucked while they were in the midst of setting and extending the worst consecutive stretch of sucking the history of the NFL.

It reminds me of the phrase, Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

At the beginning of the season, I said I expected a minimum of eight wins, and that I expected the Raiders to thus compete for the divisional title.

That expectation was predicated on the Raiders playing/coaching better than they had been. So far, so good.

So no, I wasn't wrong in doubting folks like Huff, Routt, Kelly, DMac and others when they were doing very little to show that they deserved anything more than skepticism.

Now the Seymour trade is different. I may have gotten that one wrong. It's hard to say right now. It depends on how this defense holds up over next few years vs. some of the players who'll get picked at or behind our top draft slot in 2011.

But yes, it's looking like I might have gotten that one wrong.

Jackson forgot his playbook, and Cable didn't listen to me about playing Ski over Campbell. Of course by the time Ski went in it was too late.

Campbell posted another lousy QB rating (26.2).

Listen, I don't think either QB is the Raiders future, but I see far better game management from Ski than Campbell.

Campbell is one of these guys that needs everything else to work in order to play well himself.

Ski can make it happen on his own.

I didn't expect the Raiders to win today, but I didn't expect them to lay down either.

Next week will be critical, because we have to stay within one game of KC to control our own destiny.

As far as today ...

Just got to put this ugly, disappointing loss behind us. The Steelers are one of the few (if only) teams that can take away our rushing attack. W/O the rushing attack, we are paralyzed.

Mixed emotions about the Seymour incident.

On the one hand, it was nice to see Rapelisberger get decked after creeping up on Seymour on talking trash.

On the other hand, it doesn't help our cause (today or possibly vs. Fins if Seymour is suspended 1 game).

Get back on track vs. the Fins and we would still be in the driver's seat of controlling our destiny.

My WAY TOO EARLY PREDICTIONS:

Raiders win the division on the last day of the season in KC and face the wild card Steelers in the playoffs in Oakland.

If the Raiders are going back to this brand of football, there will be no playoffs. Once again we see the unimaginative Defense. "CJ"...

Your eyes deceive you and you can't remember what you posted...Than you come in with this make-believe crap...

BTW, I never said the pass from Campbell was "perfect". I said the pass was "gorgeous". I said he made the pass when the chips were down. I said the pass was thrown in an area where only Ford could make it. I said the pass led to our OT victory.

Here is what you posted:

This pass allowed Ford and only Ford to make a play on the ball by leading him perfectly.

Now which is it...Did "JustCrap" lay that ball in there leading Ford "Perfectly" or not...I say "BS"...The ball was too far inside and caused Ford to break stride going for the spectacular catch while stretched-out going to the ground...

Leading him perfectly...Your eyesight needs adjusting...Play it over and over and the outcome is the same...Spectacular play by a rookie "WR" on a poorly thrown ball by a veteran "QB"...And there was NO hand on Ford until the "DB" closed separation while Ford was already air-born making the catch...Thus the "DB" was NOT in position to make a play on Ford because he had gained separation on the play....

Play that back and than watch what "BigBen" did to us...Now that will give you an idea of what a "Perfectly" thrown pass should look like...They were difficult to defend...Repeatedly..."JustCrap" doesn't have that...

Well...Time to hope the "MuleHead"s can pull off the up-set...Than we will have a 1 game lead on the #2 position in the AFCW....Otherwise we are tied for 2nd and that's not good....

This loss hurts no matter how you slice it...We got out-gunned....But our "D" gave us 3-4 3-n-outs to start the game but our "O" took a shit on the field and did nothing with it...Than the collapse came....

Point: The "Zebra" s were not nice to us for most of the game but the only points we managed were on the drive where they threw the flags on Pitts...That's how inept we were at "QB"...

Granted: Zack -n- Murphy failed to make catches they usually make....Also "D-Mac" had his failures too...

"JLH" 4/37yds
Murphy 3/25yds
Ford 2/27

Tomlin was very respectful to Seymour after the game, suggesting things got out of hand in general, without pointing any fingers.

DB Brandon Flowers was on Ford's hip and covering him in the trail position very close.

Before Ford made his final burst to catch the ball, DB Flowers was INCHES apart from Ford.

Flowers was so close to Ford, that the photo shows him grabbing Ford a half second before the catch.

Ford is turned completely inside and stretching for the ball...It failed to "Lead" him at all...Instead it was too far inside and prolley a little short which caused Ford to slow -n- peel left allowing the "DB" to make up ground...

The hand that was on him had no grip/strength because Ford had enough separation that the "DB" had little to no play on the man...

Had the ball been on target and leading Ford he could have kept his feet and his stride while racing for the end-zone...That's not at all what happened though is it...Ford had to turn to his left and stretch for the ball...

Look how parallel to the hash marks his body is while his momentum is going down field...

Here's the news report:

Raiders coach Tom Cable with regard to pulling Jason Campbell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski at his post-game press conference:

“(Jason) will be the starter next week. There is no issue there. As we could all see, it didn’t make a lot of difference.”

6:21 PM
Blogger x said...

To me, the outcome wasn't unexpected with Campbell starting. Cable should have stuck to his guns when he said Gradkowski would definitely be the starter when he got healthy.

Especially against a D like Pittsburgh, where you need a quicker release, quicker decision maker, see the whole field guy back there at QB.

Yeah, many were saying go ahead and start Campbell and just have Gradkowski ready to relieve him. Easier said than done. Game could be out of reach by then....like it was today.

The decision to start JC is more curious after Gradkowski's performance at Pitt last year. Could it be the influence of Al Davis?

And why is Cable so quick to announce that JC will be starting v Miami?

I don't like it.

8:45 PM
Anonymous gary said...

The biggest problem I see with Campbell is he has JaMarcus's touch in throwing the screen pass so there is absolutely no way to keep defenses honest in blitzing.

Maybe thats why he has looked so good in situations where teams weren't blitzing much??... the two games where Den and Sea had to put 8 in the box to stop the run, and the SD and KC game where they were playing prevent at the end.

The guy is absolutely dead in the water vs the blitz.

This, and this fact alone is the reason I favor Ski... he's not a great QB, but possesses skills to counter the blitz. And yes, we are going to see a lot of blitzing vs Miami. I certainly hope Cable/Jackson have a short leash on this... seems the only way that Campbell gets benched is by throwing an interception... which he doesn't do very often because hes so conservative.

I don't understand Jackson at all... he goes from games where his play-calling is nearly perfect to games like this where it seems almost as bad as anyone in the NFL. The deep pass was working... so lets stop doing it. The Pitts secondary was holding or committing PI with EVERY long pass... why stop? Because McF up the gut was working so well?

Coaching and QBs again... its maddening.

Miami is a VERY beatable team... time for our QBs and coaches to play like their hair is on fire...

I almost got the feeling that the reason Campbell wasn't given the hook sooner in the game is that Cable didn't want to create any "controversy" or fuel the fire of changing QBs next week.

There are some teams that are bad matchups. While the Donkeys are tailor made for the Raiders (bad run D, bad run O), the Steelers are our kryptonite considering they give up the fewest yards on the ground and utilize both a pass blitz and run blitz as part of their staple D.

Ski got things going in his 1st series but ended up throwing a pick.

5 series for Ski;

9 plays, 56 yards, INT
6 plays, 23 yards, PUNT
6 plays, 15 yards, PUNT
6 plays, 17 yards, DOWNS
3 plays, 14 yards, end of game

7/19, 37%, 70 yards, 1 INT

Why am I showing you these stats? Because quite a few of you are acting like Ski is "our man". It is the "grasser is always greener on the other side" syndrome.

Both Ski and Campbell played poorly. Both have their moments of good and bad. Ski is more mobile and able to handle the blitz better. Campbell has a stronger arm. BOTH QBs play much better when we establish the run.

Let's face it ... we don't have a top notch QB on our roster. Our QBs are especially reliant on a good run offense to set up play action pass, move the chains, and keep our D fresh.

What did Ski do vs. Pittsburgh or anytime this season that says "YEP, he is #1 guy?" Now don't get me wrong. I like Ski for a lot of reasons but he (IMO) is not exactly a #1 QB. He is a guy who can hold the down the fort for a few games, maybe a few seasons. He is best suited as a #2 IMO.

Our D was toothless. 3 red zone opportunities for Pitt, 3 TDs. Our offense couldn't run the ball and turned it over too many times.

11:11 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

CJ -

The question isn't what Ski did this year to earn the starting role, it's what he didn't do. And that's fall asleep at the wheel (multiple times).

You're quick to point out that Ski threw a pick, but fail to consider he was pressed into action 3-4 scores in the hole.

Cable makes this statement:

"(Jason) will be the starter next week. There is no issue there. As we could all see, it didn’t make a lot of difference.”

Huh! The head coach of a pro football team couldn't see the difference?

I can only hope that was his rehearsed media response and that he actually could see the difference. And that's a QB that had far more command of the game situation. His release was much quicker, his short passes were well thrown, including timing passes (which Campbell doesn’t even throw).

Even the playbook seemed to open up more with Ski... or he reads his options better. Has anyone ever seen Campbell call an audible?

Regardless, IMO, this game falls on the coaches more than the players. Who's the brain surgeon that decided to play totally vanilla?

Didn't anybody watch game film of the Steelers loss last week. The Pats were anything but vanilla.

Every time the Raiders step away from being aggressive, they fail. Yet they continue to do it.

Apparently, maintaining the “blueprint” is more important than winning.

Yes, it sucked. Yes, we stunk the place up.

But, Classlessburger deserved that shot to the head by Seymour. I've never said a player deserved an injury before. But Classlessburger deserved a concussion.

He runs up and while surrounded by three of his O-line (coward) picks a fight.

You can see it in Classlessburger's eyes. He was targeting Seymour. It was also an act all the falling to the ground and crap. Three minutes later he was laughing it up with everybody on the sidelines.

Seymour has been a class act his entire career. Classlessburger should be in the Sexual Offender Registry.

I am really looking forward to hearing Seymour's side of it.

He and Kelly were being held on practically every play. I saw hands to the face, face mask, chop blocks. The whole works.

That doesn't excuse the lousy play on offense. Our defense deserved better treatment, from our offense AND the refs. Especially our offense.

Now, I hope everyone saw what I was talking about last week. I'm guessing 80% of the pressure on Campbell came directly up the middle and middle-right.

I'm for putting the receiver question on hold until we correct the OL.

Well, to Ski's defense, only one of the two QBs has not been playing for over a month.

I didn't get to watch the end of the game because it was on local and they switched to a non-blowout, but the first series looked pretty decent by Ski... especially making plays out of nothing... something Campbell has never done ALL SEASON.

Miami's run defense is 20th... and maybe Campbell might be a better choice this weekend because of his good games when the running game is rolling... but knowing Pitts was going to stop our run... if I were coach, I would have started Ski yesterday.

I am not coach.

Its the most glaring weakness... besides maybe QB.

I think you're missing the point about the WR discussion of late. Both WR and OL are areas to be addressed. However, now in mid-season, the Raiders are pretty much limited to their roster. This is where the WR rotation gained traction in our discussion.

Conversely, I don't see any moves along the O-line I feel strongly about making right now. Do you? It kind of is what it is until the next draft and free agent period.

NYRaider,

I'm not missing the point.

I'm making a separate point. The point that the OL is way more critical than WR.

I stated as much in September before the first game, when all people could talk about was the WR's.

Defense was a major priority during the offseason. And, it's starting to pay off. Like I said, they got no support from the offense.

Vlad is coming along, but he's still a rookie.

What changes would I make? Move Henderson to RT and start Loper or Bruce Campbell at RG. That might not improve anything, but it most likely wouldn't be any worse.

More athletic, quicker players on the line might help in picking up the middle blitzes. Also, more plays with pulling guards to the right so defenses can't stack the left.

However, I can only assume the coaching staff believes this is the best combination. But, we need three new folks from center through RT.

During the upcoming offseason the OL must be the number one priority, above WR.

Strong defensive teams that can run the ball and reasonably pass protect do quite well with WR's that put up very pedestrian numbers.

I would also go back to Ski at quarterback. He gets the ball to the receiver quicker. Some more first downs could have helped the defense immensely and helped with field position. The Squealers had way too many short fields.

Even when Campbell had time he was late getting the ball out. This caused him to lead receivers too far. Murphy was open but caught the ball out of bounds. That's happened several times this season.

Ford made some amazing catches last week, but you can't count on that every week. The quarterback needs to deliver the ball on time and anticipate the receiver coming open.

Gary,

So, this wasn't a "must win"? Well, we are now in second place a full game behind. Trevor Scott is probably lost for the season and the schedule isn't getting any easier. Not to mention Seymour may be suspended for a game for giving Classlessburger what he deserved.

Now, up for discussion. Dan Fouts pointed out that Lechler was using smelling salts, which is basically ammonia, before each punt. It's a perfectly legal substance. What's the over/under on how long it takes the league to outlaw it?

"OL" as "H" posted is the real source of our problems...

Coaching sucked in this one just as Gary-n-"NYR" said...

"Ski" was better than "JustCrap"...Look at their production:

"JustCrap" 3 quarters without being down with his back to the wall....

"Ski" 1 quarter with his back to the wall....

13/24 98yds Int

Now how the hell can you argue that???...Oh!...I'm sure you will find a way...

OK...Now I have a solution...Only because there is no way we get my boy Vick out of Philly...

Vince Young will now be on the "Chopping Block" and I like him...He threw his jersey-n-shoulder pads into the stands so as to say we're finished and the Titans proceeded to second that declaration...I say the "OldMan" goes after him...

That could be much worse.

Are you really suggesting we replace two veteran linemen with Henderson (who failed miserably on the left side) and Campbell, who even Cable admits is not ready?

IMO, those are moves you make when your season is lost. Instead, again IMO, Cable should be working even harder to get the current starters to gel better as a group.

Tonight's game is huge for Raiders fans. This is a game to watch for those who ONLY watch the Raiders.

Denver must win for Raiders fans!

IMO, SD is still the biggest threat in the division and we should hope to maintain the largest possible gap with them. Raiders have one game left against each division opponent. Right now, we still own ALL tie-breakers in the division, and we still control our own destiny.

NYRaider,

I did state that I assumed the staff feels these are the best players. But, I was asked what changes I would make, so I answered it.

“IMO, those are moves you make when your season is lost. Instead, again IMO, Cable should be working even harder to get the current starters to gel better as a group.

The same argument could be made for wide receiver and Cable probably is working hard to get the current guys to play better as a group.

Now, Lincoln Kennedy was a bust at LT in Atlanta and turned into a Pro Bowl player at RT with us. Henderson might work against the, normally, weaker rusher. Langston Walker basically is a wall they have to run around at the moment. He doesn’t move well in pass protection. And, the fact that we have pretty much quit running right except to see if we can catch the defense napping speaks for itself.

Our best running plays to the right are those where Gallery is pulling to the right.

My greater point is we set a priority for defense last off season. We now are amongst the top in sacks and total defense. The run defense is better and should improve even more with another years experience for the young guys. OL should now move to the top of the priority list.

I'm thinking the same myself.

Theres never going to be another Gannon in todays NFL (prolly BECAUSE of Gannon) and many of the blue chip QB's coming out lately (besides of course JaMoney) are doing pretty well.

Colt McCoy might be better than either of our QBs and we coulda got him last year in the 3rd round.

I like our young defense, and I am not yet ready to write off our WRs yet... QB and some linemen is really our biggest need.

Right now we might be the only team .500 or over with a bottom 10 QB.

No, OL has got to be a top priority. Upright quarterbacks tend to perform better. We have upgraded quarterback from last season. Let's not continue reinventing the wheel. Let's keep the wheels we have healthier.

If Philly makes the playoffs and wins a first round game, Vick will be franchised at a minimum, so take him off any dream list.

Also, I'm not overly impressed with the QB's that will be available when we draft. I'm assuming that will be somewhere mid second round.

No on Vince Young.

I think we have good depth at quarterback. I'd like to see what they can do with a solid OL. Especially Gradkowski.

Campbell can also do the job, if he'll stop hanging on to the ball too long and just cut it loose.

So if they get a few stud o-linemen to plug in this year they have a good o-line and STAFFORD.

We still have two backup QBs...

Years ago, SD "wasted" three high draft picks on QB's and one just won a SB (for another team) and the other is keeping them at championship quality teams... and might win a MVP if they go to the playoffs.

Tenn had the best lines in football for awhile now and hasn't won a frigging playoff game for just as long because their QB's always suck.

Cmon H... name a top team without a top QB.

Now look at all the bottom teams and all the QB problems... do you really think it all is a coincidence and the o-lines are all responsible?

The NFL is and alwayswill be a QB league.

The last time we had a consistent team was when we had a consistent QB.

I doubt the Raiders will have access to a QB that could improve their current roster.

I agree with H that building the O-line should be a top priority. I've been saying that now for about eight years, or at least the last five years.

You can say the Raiders started losing when Gannon left, but we actually went south (literally and figuratively) when Barrett Robbins crossed the border. At the very least, that was a battery we may never be able to duplicate again.

In the Raiders tradition of All-Pro centers, Satele, and Grove before him, are substandard players. IMO, this is where we suffer most.

Explain what this even means?

That is pretty much the single most illogical statement I have ever seen here.

Heres an exercise... if anyone thinks the o-line is more important the QB ... take a list of the standings listed top to bottom... look at the teams at the top half, and compare to the teams at the bottom half.

The usual suspects at the top: Brady, Manning, Brees, Rothlesberger, Rodgers... with Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez all making up a youth movement. All teams above us, all teams with better QBs.

Look at the teams at the bottom:
Car, Buff, SF, Ariz... none have their QB situation figured out.

Do we really have people here claiming its all because of o-lines???

The statement is "illogical" only if you expect to acquire a top flight QB who can hand the ball to his RBs and dump off passes to his RBs and TEs.

Realistically:

"KC" is stumbling and Denver is out...

"SD" is our major threat....

If we win our games against the AFCW and are 6-n-0 that puts us at the top...We pick up one game on "SD" so could afford to lose one other game and still lead...

That would mean winning the next 4 -w- a loss to Indy and win at "KC"...We would be 10-n-6...As I posted at the beginning of the season 10-n-6 will take it and that's exactly where it is now...But we need to finish 5-n-1 with wins in the West...We need 2/3 against Miami/Jacks/Indy + "SD"/Den/"KC...

NOT an easy task...The last week will be huge...We go to "KC"s bitter cold while "SD" goes to Denver's bitter cold...Who walks out on top may also take the West...

I'm just making an observation. You say QB is the most critical player (which I'm not disagreeing), but you place little emphasis on WR, and even less if you have a good QB.

I find that very interesting. So if I have a good Indy driver, I don't really need a good car?

The Raiders are now getting known as a physical team again and to the point that teams lose the week after playing us like in our distant past...Cable is bringing that all back again...

SO...

If we can make that happen in 2 weeks when we play "SD" they will lose the following week to "KC"...2 losses in a row would be nice...

Lets see how Pitts does at Buffalo this week to see if that trend continues...Their "OL" was hurting Sunday so maybe they can't get up for this weeks game...

Wrist injury reportedly will sideline Chargers' WR Crayton two weeks

The Chargers' receiving corps has been decimated by injuries this season, and it was without Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates for the second consecutive game Monday night.

Malcolm Floyd returned to action Monday, but tweaked his nagging hamstring injury, according to the Union-Tribune. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson is scheduled to return Sunday night, when the Chargers play the Indianapolis Colts.

2 weeks is after we play them...Hopefully Jackson is not up to much after sitting out so long....Indy should be able to knock these guys off and than if we can do the same and they lose to "KC" they are no longer a threat....

Oakland-n-"SD" are 4-n-1 at home and 1-n-4 away but "SD" is only 1-n-2 in the AFCW...We all have 3 home -n- 3 away left to play....2/3 of our AFCW games will be away so we need to win on the road....

Gary said, "H... I think we both agreed last season we had a great draft... but imagine now if we had drafted Colt McCoy instead of Houston or even VELDHEER?"

Colt McCoy is an average QB. Campbell and Gradkowski are average QBs. We have WRs, that for the majority, are average. Louis Murphy and Zach Miller are going to be above average. I cannot say the same for Chaz because of injury. He has yet to complete an NFL Season in his career. But beyond those 2, it is too early to say on DHB, Jacoby Ford, and Nick Miller. JLH is average at best. I think that is the problem offensively, we have too many average players, and no veteran to help make them better.

Imagine if we drafted Jordan Shipley instead of a QB, Houston, or Veldheer (which we could have picked later), with Campbell/Gradkowski at QB, DHB, Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford, and Zach Miller. Or imagine if we would have signed or traded for a WR like Anquan Boldin, Santonio Holmes, Brandon Marshall, T.O.; or drafted someone like Calvin Johnson a few years back, or DeSean Jackson?

I think we are a good WR away of being more productive offensively. I also think we can be in the same boat if we had a decent QB like Mike Vick, Vince Young, Ben Rothlesberger (whom we passed on), Drew Brees (signing him when SD cut him), or discovering someone like Flacco, Matt Ryan, etc.

You can argue all you want that this is a QB league, and to some extent it is. A great QB in this league is unafraid to take risks; but it doesn't always pan out or equate to a Super Bowl, though sometimes it does (i.e.-Favre, Romo, Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, Dan Marino, etc).

I think we can have an average QB like Campbell and Gradkowski, give them WRs that are going to consistently catch the ball (not consistently drop the ball), and do well. Example of this: Ravens, Buccaneers, Steelers, Falcons, Jets, Titans, the Vikings under Dennis Green (with Moss, Chris Carter, and Culpepper at QB). I can go on and on; but it is rare to find a great QB with mediocre WRs succeed (like the Patriots and Colts).

You need both. You need quality WRs and a quality QB. I think we are one quality WR away from doing that, more so than one quality QB.

Here's a couple interesting comments from J-Mac about the Raiders' WRs:

jerrymac:

"Straight ahead speed isn't how you get open. It's knowing the passing game, knowing where to break off a route, going after the ball . . . it was one thing I noticed at a 49ers practice earlier this year. They're receivers are no great shakes either, but they attack the ball much more so than the Raiders do in practice, even in drills."

jerrymac:

"Would have to see the [FA] list first, and who is actually eligible under what new terms would constitute free agency. And frankly, they've given me no faith in the last couple of years that they understand what is needed at WR."

As a whole, this is a subpar group, and the Raiders have no one but themselves to blame.

Basically I agree...Takes 2 to tango...The one exception is if the "QB" is good and we have the "TE"-n-"RB"/FB" to take up the slack...

Problem is we have the "TE"/"RB"s/"FB" to do just that but fail at the "QB" position to get consistent results out of them...Consequently right now that quality "QB" could be all the difference in the world in this "O"...

Yes...Add in a top caliber "WR" along with the maturing of our young "WR"s and we've got something to build upon...But how damn far if we still struggle to consistently get the ball into their hands or to the "TE"-n-"RB"s...

Ask this...If we had one of the top "QB"s that you just mentioned with our "TE"/"RB"s/"FB" and present young core of "WR"s could we have moved the chains and had a shot at beating Pits...

I would say unquestionably YES!!!...

"NYR"...

Takes time to build a roster...We are just as void of talent or even more so on the "OL"...At "QB"...

Than on the "D" side of the ball we need a "CB"...Maybe another "DT"/"DE" for substitution depth....Will one of our young guys step up or do we need to go after someone else???...

The needs are dwindling so that's a step in the right direction I thunk!!!...

One thing about had we drafted one of those "QB"s was the state of the Raiders at that time...

"BigBen" came out with Eli Manning and Rivers....

"04" #11...Rivers at #4...

We took Gallery at #2 who was what was right at the time...Well so much for being right...

But "BigBen" went to a very stable program and still had too many off field issues to stay focused on football...What would he have been in "OakTown"....Out-a-Control"...

Same with Brees when let go in "06" when we had that "Bread-n-Breakfast" thing and the "Mole" -vs- "Paranoia" going on under that shattered "Cone-o-Silence" -w- Shell II...Doubt he could have helped that team at all...

Rivers may have been another story and maybe we wouldn't have taken such a dive so quickly with his talents in our backfield...Who knows...But Turner would have found a way...

Now we are in a much better circumstance to bring a top talent "QB" into the mix...We have some stability and an "OC" who could make it work...Also most of the weapons already in place...

It's much easier/cheaper to get a top tier "ROT" than a top tier "WR"...

Top tier "C" I'm not so sure....

But here is a thought...If we went after Vick we need a top tier "ROT" to protect his blindside...

Gary -

I didn't miss that comment, nor did I intentionally not post it here.

I never disagreed that we have a problem at QB. If you look at my posts, I've said many times that I don't believe Campkowski is the long-term answer.

I was merely commenting on your inconsistent and/or conflicting dialogue. What can I say, I find it amusing.

Funny thing is the WR position is relatively easy to address in a short-term, but it simply wasn't. We've had literally years to add an inexpensive veteran WR to enhance our roster.

Instead, we've maintained inactive and injured WRs, and relied on mostly young and inexperienced players.

Sure, in another year or two these guys might have some experience and one, maybe two guys could step up to be a real player.

But a stopgap seemed so obvious, and there has been plenty of opportunity to clear a roster spot at WR. It just never made sense to me, which was reaffirmed by J-Mac’s comments.

So while the comments I posted mean something to me, I didn't feel the need to post something that you feel strongly about. Why should I do that?

You think it's all about you, don't you?

I don't understand your continued support of Campbell and disapproval of Ski.

While neither guy is winning the job, Campbell has been downright awful at times.

I’m sure he’s one or two more bad quarters from being diagnosed with narcolepsy.

What stands out for me is Ski's energy, command of the huddle (which he proved last year), quick decision-making, ball release, and apparent understanding of the playbook. Campbell lacks in all these areas.

We have a hurdle to get over if we have any chance to make the playoffs. I don't see Campbell getting us there with his inability to handle the pressure.

As far as I can tell, he's still the same QB that led Washington to a 4-12 record, despite putting up respectable stats. He just doesn't have the engery and drive that a team needs to get over the hump.

Report: Wrist injury to sideline Chargers' WR Crayton several weeks

Fisher: Young welcome at Titans' facility, just not team meeting

"I went to look for Vince in the locker room prior to a team meeting, couldn't find him. I had one of my assistants inform Vince he was not welcome in the team meeting for obvious reasons," Fisher said Tuesday night on his weekly radio show. "I discussed the situation that happened the night before (at the meeting)."

Vince Young 2010 Statistics
Touchdown Passes: 10
Interceptions: 3
Passing Yards: 1,255
Passer Rating: 98.6

What it doesn't show here is how he keeps plays alive with his legs...Similar to Vick...

He will no doubt be available and I say pull the trigger Big Al...

Unless of course we can get Vick...

"JC"s Production 27 Quarters: Rate 75.8
8 Games Played -w- 7 "TD"s to 6 "Int"s
104/190 1,322yds 54.7% 7yds ave
23 Sacks 147yds
9 Fumbles 1 lost

"Ski"s Production 13 Quarters: Rate 67
5 Games Played -w- 4 "TD"s -n- 5 "Int"s
66/125 807yds 66% 6.5yds ave
9 Sacks 72 yds
3 Fumbles 1 Lost

As you look at the #'s "Ski"s are in half as many quarters as "JC"...So let's just double all "Ski"s #'s and see where he would project in 26 Quarters for comparison...

8 "TD"s -n- 10 "Int"s
132/250 1614yds
18 Sacks 144yds
6 Fumbles 2 Lost

To my surprise not a whole lot of separation between them..."Ski" should have gained an extra 300yds...5 less Sacks but same yds lost...3 less Fumbles but 1 extra lost...1 extra "TD" but 4 extra "Int"s....

I know when I watch them play "Ski" seems so much more alive to me and his passes are quicker and closer to the receivers....But as Cable pointed out the production is the same...

PantyRaider...I Still Prefer "Ski" Over "JustCrap"!!!!/_

7:34 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

One other thing of note I just noticed: Playcalling...

"Ski" would have thrown 30% more passes than "JC" to come up with his 300 extra yds....

So the ratio of run-to-pass is not the same....

Hue calls a greater # of pass plays when "Ski" is in there...30% is a substantial figure....Now does that explain why we always run on 1st dn when "JC" is in the game...Hue just doesn't trust him to throw the ball that frequently....

Jarvis Moss to replace Scott?

A message on the registered account of JMossVsJarvis says: “So it’s official! I’m an Oakland Raider! God is good thank him.”

former Denver Broncos first-round draft pick Jarvis Moss the No. 17 overall selection out of Florida in 2007. He never exhibited the pass rush skills the Broncos expected and he was waived last week with 3.5 career sacks, going unclaimed

6'7" 257#s "OLB"...

So does Wimbely move to "RDE" and moss to his "OLB" spot or does Moss play "RDE" in place of Scott....

More on the "QB" comparisons:

"JustCrap" has several laps periods where he "Sleep Walks"...Has a passer rate below 30...Can't complete a pass to move the chains and our "D" gets gassed...Than he get's hot and makes up ground sometimes if there's enough time left in the day...Or he never wakes up at all...Thus he has an ave of 75 as a passer rate...

"Ski" is more stable and consistent so although his rate is lower at 67 he maintains and we usually move the chains giving the "D" a rest....

Production may be very similar but the overall effect on the team is quite different...

PantyRaider...I Definitely Take "Ski"!!!/_

Campbell would be a perfect fit for a team that doesn't really even need a QB... the 2000 Ravens fer instance.

But there rarely is a team that can win consistently with defense and running alone... hell, just once in the history of the NFL it could be argued.

You're like a little kid. You just can't put it to rest.

The WR position doesn't exist in a vacuum. There are other players that make up a team.

That's a lot of blame to place on the shoulders of two players.

The fact that the Bengals can't figure out their problems doesn't make it O.K. for the Raiders to not try harder in correcting their own shortcomings.

J-Mac had an interesting take on the Chaz Schilens issue, although I hope he is wrong about Raiders fans placing the blame on Schilens (who has no control of his injury).

On a side, this statement hit home for me:

"Amazing that the team that had the ultimate set of hands in Fred Biletnikoff doesn’t seem to value the whole process of catching the ball as much as it does 40-yard dash times, vertical stretch ability, etc."

Ironically, Dolphins have an undrafted FA WR (Bess) that "cloned" himself after Tim Brown and has 179 catches since 2008. Apparently, he has none of the attributes the Raiders covet in a WR.

Funny how his opinion is acceptable when it backs whatever you're pimpin'.

My understanding is that he is a local reporter with as much access to the Raiders as humanly possible, i.e., short of being an employee of Al Davis.

Besides, he didn't have to reach too far to come up with the fact that Al Davis places more emphasis on track speed than football speed. That is well known and well documented by draft picks.

I find it difficult to call somebody misinformed (or a liar) when the evidence is overwhelmingly supportive.

When was the last time the Raiders drafted a possession WR over a speedy track star-type WR?

I believe DHB was the fastest WR in his draft class, and Ford was the fastest player in his draft class. Meanwhile, Murphy has blazing speed. Speed is what what Davis covets. Do you disagree?

Honestly, you'd have to be blindly loyal to not agree with him on the poor play of the WR corps these last several years. Man, would I love to have Davone Bess on this team. Hope he doesn't hurt us this Sunday....that'll sting.

Well, that slow, undrafted WR has more catches and TDs than the two Raider starting WRs combined.

Dude grew up a Raider fan too.

I can name quite a few undrafted guys that ended up doing pretty well in the NFL - like that LB over in Pitts.

NFL looking into Broncos' videotaping; team staffer on leave

The Denver Broncos have placed their director of video operations on leave while the NFL investigates whether the team broke league rules by filming the San Francisco 49ers' walkthrough in London last month.

When we have the ball...

Passing will be difficult...But we already knew that if "JustCrap" is playing...But now the "WR"s will have trouble getting consistently open...But than we don't have any "WR"s anyway so why worry about that....

Rushing should be our bread-n-basket...But please NO "Bread-n-Breakfast" this week...Be creative and dump off to the "RB"s -n- "TE"s like we did early in the season...That shit was working very well so let's get it going again here...

"OL"...You need to show up this week...Can't play on your knees and expect this game to fall in our favor...Be ready to take the heat and deliver a knock-down...Please!!!....

When they have the ball...Thigpen Please!!!...

Bring that heat and be relentless about it...Crumble the "QB" and the rest will follow...Put Nmamdi on their best and take that weapon from their game...Make that "UDFA" "WR" beat us that "X"-n-"NYR" are so worried about...Ya Know!!...The guy Al wouldn't like because he can catch but lacks speed....

They aren't much of a rushing threat lately but be aware of it and don't get caught sleeping...They aren't very good at scoring so let's hold them to "FG"s when they get close...Stopping the run will be key in those situations...

I give this one to us at home...The Fish are gutted by injury and ready for the slaughter..We will play very angry and take it out on them...But just like last week....Don't play with a wounded dog...Just knock'em in the head and put'em down...

"Last year. Schillens."

That's it? Schilens? Citing Schilens only supports my assertion.

Schilens was injury prone in college and was drafted as a project player in the seventh round two years ago, not last year.

Aside from a few games and a couple decent catches, he has been injured for most of his short pro career.

Gary, I never said QB wasn't a problem. I just don't think two wrongs make a right. Seems like you want to throw stardust on the WRs and only address the QB situation.

The reality is, it should be far easier to address the WR issue and hope that the three QBs we have can be a stopgap until a viable long-term solution is uncovered.

In Other "Mule Valley" News:

Taping 49ers' practice draws $50K fines for Broncos, McDaniels

The NFL fined the Denver Broncos and coach Josh McDaniels $50,000 each after a team employee violated the league's integrity-of-the-game policy by videotaping a six-minute portion of the San Francisco 49ers' Oct. 30 practice in London.

The Broncos and NFL made the announcement Saturday, nearly one month after the 49ers' 24-16 victory on Oct. 31 at Wembley Stadium.

The Broncos informed the NFL that team video director Steve Scarnecchia took the video and presented it that day to McDaniels, who declined to view it. However, McDaniels was fined because he failed to report the incident as required by league policy.

LIARS!!!!....I didn't look you freakin lying ass donkey crap "RoadApple"!!!!....

Than they follow that "MuleCrap" up with the long overdone apology statement...

"I found out about the situation that day. We certainly did not view or do anything with the footage, and he was made aware that it was something that we didn't condone in our organization

"This incident is in no way representative of what the Broncos stand for, and in no way representative of what I stand for as the head coach of this organization

"We understand that it is not only our job individually, but as an organization, to uphold the integrity of the National Football League by what we do every day, and this certainly was not a good example of that," McDaniels said. "We don't condone this type of activity -- don't teach it, coach it and nor would we ever in the future.

"The Denver Broncos and I, as the owner, believe in the integrity of the National Football League and fair competition and do not, in any way, condone this type of behavior," Bowlen said in a statement. "The fact that an employee of the Denver Broncos would take such action is personally disappointing to me. I apologize to all affected by this incident. ...

Heee! Hah! Heee! Ha! Heeee! Haaah!

Translation:

Dame!...We Got's Caught Again!!!

This totally sums it up...

Scarnecchia and McDaniels previously worked for the New England Patriots, who were found to have videotaped New York Jets coaches sending in signals during a game four years ago.

That was never how it was presented, but if you want to make that comparison, fine.

Both players entered the NFL in 2008. Bess has 179 career receptions. Schilens has 44 career receptions, and it's uncertain if he'll ever play again.

How does that make us smarter than the Dolphins?

If finding a good QB was easier than WR, then we shouldn't have any problem at QB, right?

We signed three veteran QBs in the last couple years, and tried out several others. Why didn't we just sign a "good one"?

Meanwhile, what veteran WRs have we signed?

It's not a riddle. It's a very simple observation.

I've seen enough glimpses of greatness from our young WRs to think we should be developing them, is all.

Not sure how whining about them, or whining that a veteran WR should have been brought in (taking snaps away from the young guys) is accomplishing anything.

The reality is, it should be far easier to address the WR issue and hope that the three QBs we have can be a stopgap until a viable long-term solution is uncovered.

Well... unless you can convince me that none of our WRs have a chance of developing into premier WRs, I don't see your point.

I am firmly convinced Campbell will never be a premier QB... EVER.

I am also pretty sure Grads won't either.

I can't say the same for Murphy, Ford, DHB, or Schillens. Why do you disagree? Maybe we can go from there...

Regardless of who you think should start today or will start today, the handling of the starting QB has been poor. I have no interest in arguing over whose fault it is; bottom line is that it is poor management and furthers the stereotype of how the organization operates.

Dolphins are right behind the Raiders in sacks (29 vs 26) and can bring the pass rush.

However, unlike the Raiders, who spread around the wealth, the Dolphins have one player that put them over the top. Cameron Wake has 9.5 sacks. If the Raiders can find a way to neutralize this guy, they may be able to keep the pressure off their QB, who ever it is.

I believe the Raiders D can hold their own today (assuming they will dial up a blitz now and then). Question is, which Raiders offense shows up; the good, the bad or the ugly?

It's Gameday!

Looking ahead a bit... most people I see have already written Indy off as a sure loss unless they already have the playoffs clinched (kinda unlikely)... if you look at it though, I think Manning HATES playing the Raiders. We nearly beat them a few years ago with JaMoney, and he said afterwords how different it is playing the Raiders because he never plays against any M2M defense teams. We also had a win against him several years ago...

With Manning struggling, Indy is a VERY mediocre team.

Clearly I am not familiar with the concept of the cone of silence then. Does this cone require silence from all or just a few or just one? Who are those in the cone as some form of information has seeped out of this "cone." Appears to me the coach was not silent earlier in the week.

My statement is my take of how the organization operates. Again, I could care less about who starts and while I am not partial to the media in general, the fact that these issues come up to speaks to something. I am defining what I see as an organizational flaw. They have mishandled this issue and have a history of doing so. If you disagree, fine. And if you disregard what that sentiment is, and you think the media is full of idiots, than it should not bother you what the media ever says nor the sentiment that follows as your disregard should be consistent.

The "Mediot"s by definition are "Media-Idiots"...

Now they do have a legitimate job which is to simply report what they actually see...Are told...But instead they all want to make a name for themselves so they drag everything down with their ridicules speculations/satire/editorials or whatever name they want to call it this morning...That's where their "Idiocy" becomes apparent...

Than too they band together with their childish pursuits and strike out at the people whom they were hired to cover...

In this case it's Al Davis -n- his Raiders simply because they don't get what they want when they want it...The "Cone-of-Silence" is in their way and they continually try to demolish it...Even to the extent of pimping the NFL to tear it down like this year...

But alas all their foolish childish attempts just continue to fail...So they "CRY" in their anti-love letters to you and other readers...

It is what it is..Just more split water on their "Trail-0-Tears"...

As regards the speaking that didn't happen...A "Mediot" used a little discriminate analysis and noted that "Ski" was getting the majority of the snaps in practice...Thus he speculated a change would take place and "Ski" would start...Another unimaginative "Mediot" picked up on what he wrote and reported the same with a slightly different twist as though he had the inside scoop...Than as it turns out the original "Mediot" made a good guess so they make it appear that they broke threw that "Cone-of-Silence"...But that never happened...The info simply came out in Al's due time as should be...

So meanwhile back at sea the "Gutted Fish" have not as yet proclaimed who will start at "QB" for them but I have yet to see one damn bit of animosity for that one...

PantyRaider....Go Figure...I'm Lookin But Don't See It Yet!!!/_

PS...Don't take it personal...I'm just having fun bashin "Mediot"s -n- their lovers...On this board that's been a huge issue...Their lovers are many and they try to defend their damn dumb asses even at the expense of the Raiders...Mr Davis -n- his organization....

Go Figure...There are more "HateTripper"s in the ranks of the Raider Nation now a days than in the opposing fan base...Now that is a role reversal of total stupidity...Thus...They are coined as their "Lovers"....
