Chiefs Game Thread - AFC West Showdown

Okay, time to hit the reset button and start talking about Sunday's game against the Chiefs, a classic AFC West clash with divisional title implications.

I think that defense is going to be the story of this game. The Chiefs have an explosive running attack, and Asomugha is out, putting added pressure on our secondary. There is therefore the real potential of being menaced by the big run and the long ball. It's going to be a real test, and we're going to have to bring our "A Game" to pass it.

I'd like to think that our offense will post a third straight performance of 500+ yards, but that's probably unrealistic. I think that this is going to be more of a brawl than a shootout. As it should be when the Raiders play the Chiefs in Oakland, in November, with rain in the forecast. This is going to be fun. First place, here we come!

Yes. I do think it is a very natural reaction to disappointing results. Along the same lines, how you or anyone to include Almighty Gary can hold it against a Raider fan for being disappointed in the previous 7 years results is beyond me.

Thats how you categorize the constant whining, gloom and doom, bitching, pissing, moaning, pounding fists against the floor tantrums?

"Disappointment?"

Thats like being in a hurricane and saying its kinda breezy.

Man Take. My heart says you're right, but my head says to wait.

We have not been able to stop a top-tier run game for years due to over pursuit and gaping run lanes.

So I'm hoping that Marshall has these guys playing agressively and smart.

I'm not sure KC hasn't used a lot of smoke and mirrors to win 5 out of 7. They barely beat Browns and Buffalo - two of the worst teams in the league.

Our secret weapon has to be Marcel Reese, who looks like a real playmaker to me.

Also, our team speed is faster than theirs.

I'm cautionusly optimistic.

I'm already got both DVR's set to record.

Is it Sunday game time yet?

The key is ATTACKING defense. Their defense looks to be one of the better ones in the league. If the Raiders defense can match or out do their defense, Raiders will win. The key to the Raiders is their defense, they must continue to be an attacking defense that forces the opposing offense into mistakes and not letting them get comfortable. Don't take the foot off the throat, keep that loaded pistol pointed at their temple....you get the picture. The personel on defense is made for an attacking D, it MUST be played this way or else it will be a long day.

Old business 1st...

"CJ"...

When you point a finger of consistency point it at yourself 1st...The "Rubber Walls" thing on this board has been unscrupulous to say the least...And bashin a freakin "WR" who has very limited effects upon his team while excusing very similar conduct or worse from a "HC" who has a tremendous effect on the team is a little absurdly partial don't you think...

"NoMoss" has precisely what amount of effect upon the "ST"s -n- "D" not to mention the other "WR"s -n- "QB"s -n- "TE"s -n- "RB"s -n- "OL" not to mention also the "OC"...Or now do you really believe he was such a "One Man Wrecking Ball" that he singlehandedly took those teams down??...It was a total group effort...

Maybe "NoMoss" is more god than "godGruden"...

Next...Please show me one freakin instance where I did a beat-down on anyone for feeling discouraged...That was a reach way out in left field...No!...Out of the freakin Ball-Park...

Gary pointed out the rest and I concur...

"RT"....

What this "D" does is a refection of the "O" to a very large extent...When the "O" is moving the chains and putting up points our rested "D" can pin their ears back and come at them...Conversely if our "O" is as inept as it was in "SF" our "D" is out of gas and cautious about giving up the big play so thus very conservative...That's a very natural progression...

The last 2 weeks have been fun and great to be a part of but we must understand it was a total team effort...No one unit pulled that off so we will need that same type of performance this week to carry it threw...

I believe we get it...The players are very excited this week and understand the importance of this game...They also know they get the bye afterward so can afford to leave it all on the field and have time to recoup later...They also know how disappointing it will be to enter that bye in a hole instead of on top of the world so to speak...I think they want it and will deliver...

"If the Raiders defense can match or out do their defense, Raiders will win."

Well now that's pretty stupid...How the hell is any "D" going to out perform another "D" when their never on that football field at the same time...It's "D" against "O" or don't you even understand the simplest fundamentals about this "Man's Game"...

"The key to the Raiders is their defense,"

Oh! Ya!...So it was the "D" that put up over 500 yds per game the last 2 weeks...But that's the key and ya heard it 1st right here from the false "TRUTH"....

"The personel on defense is made for an attacking D,"

Well now that's very interesting for sure...

#1...What makes them made for attacking...

#2...Sense it was Al Davis that put those bodies on that side of the ball just how do you explain your constantly ignorant posts claiming this is NOT the Al Davis "D" and HIS "D" does NOT work...

#3...Sense it was Al Davis who hired Marshal as "DC" just how the hell do you explain your constant stupidity claiming Al Davis does NOT let his "DC"s coach...

#4...Than in conclusion you must now be identifying Al Davis as the architect of and the ruler of that attacking "D" we now see on that football field...Is that RIGHT!!!!...

Just another example of stupidity/darkness attempting to appear bright!!!...

Now here comes the movable "Rubber Walls" again...

JONES is DUMB!!!...

Here's a small sampling of Gary Almighty pounding his little fists against the floor in a baby like tantrum:

“Ohh.. and if we see Campbell starting next week... and McClain doesn't stop engaging blockers, etc... I think Cable can stick his "accountability" shit straight up his ass.”

“How can anyone say theres any accountability if you don't jerk a QB that played two entire QUARTERS without passing for a single yard?”

“Although losing that pick is going to suck if we cant get this QB situation straightened out and we end up with like 5 wins again...”

“but you don't just keep drafting rookies without veteran help too... especially without a top notch coaching staff... and even then you are just going to be above average.”

“If we weren't blitzing, someone should be fired (or benched) for leaving him so wide open in the endzone.”

“JFC... if Gannon can notice it... don't we have a defensive guy in the booth to tell them this?”

“I am really ready for a purging of the defensive assistant coaches.”

Irony and hypocrisy rolled into one.

The realistic "Keys to the Game"...

Last 2 weeks:

Scoring:
92pts -n- 17pts given up...

Rushing:
91/567yds 6.2yd ave -w- 6 "TD"s
36/122yds 3.4yd ave -w- 0 "TD"s

"TOP"...
74:52 to 45:18....

Sacks:
12 made -n- 4 given up...

According to "J-Mac"...

The reason Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Marcel Reece and Darrius Heyward-Bey have had some big moments of late and Jason Campbell has been coolly efficient is because the offensive line made it possible. Oakland’s defensive line, Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly and Matt Shaughnessy in particular, have provided highlight reel stuff not seen for the last decade, albeit against the Broncos and Seahawks.

In other words "Total Team Effort" as a football team and no longer as a collection of individuals...

For me the 2 key to the game is simple and self-evident:

Which defense plays better against the run?

Which team win the turnover battle?

My hunch is similar to RTs in that it will be a relatively low scoring game and a very physical game in the trenches.

"KC"s leading scorer:

Top 2 "RB"s combine for 5 "TD"s...

19 "TD"s...
10 Pass...
6 Run...
2 "D"...
1 "ST"s...

"TO" differential +5...

Sacks 14 gained 8 given up...

"TOP" 31:10 ave....

3rd dns 30% made 40% given up...

"D" 3rd dn conversions allowed:
36 by Run...
84 by Pass...
10 by Penalty...

Get into their heads and pick fights to get them to draw the flags...

Blogger PantyRaider said...

"CJ"...

I'm not so sure about the low scoring battle this time around...Both teams are now capable of putting points on the board and I think will...

"KC" 23pts/game ave...
Raiders 26.5pts/game ave...

Somethings of note:

We are now producing more yds rushing -n- passing than our opponents -w- a +44 point advantage -w- +2 "TO"s -n- 32:13 ave "TOP"...

"KC" leads in Rushing yds gained but trail in Passing yds given up...Their "D" has an "Achilles Heal" in the pass while their "O" is weak in the passing game...

If we can score rapidly and get them out of their run game while playing catch-up we will gain a huge advantage....But that's a very big "IF"...There not much of a come-back threat...We saw that last week against Buff....

What nonsense has this become? I was excited to read RT’s very first statement;

“Okay, time to hit the reset button and start talking about Sunday's game against the Chiefs....”

What do I read instead? More of the same BS from Gary and Pantry Raider.

M.O. for Gary and Pantry Raider is to pick fights at all costs. Consider this. When we show any negativity, they claim to be positive. When we turn positive about the team, they are negative.

Right now they are actually pissed off that folks here are happy about the Raiders recent success.

They both claim to read and post comments on other Raider blog sites, yet they keep coming back here... to pick fights.

Pantry Raider went as far as to recruit a pseudo-Jones. Here’s PR’s response to Jones making a bonafide effort to assess tomorrow’s game:

“Well now that's pretty stupid.” Then, he ended his post with this gem, “JONES is DUMB!!!...”

Gary started the comment section with “Thats how you categorize the constant whining, gloom and doom, bitching, pissing, moaning, pounding fists against the floor tantrums?”

The unrelenting attacks by these two begs the question; why do you two come here? To torture us, or to torture yourselves? Clearly, neither of you appreciate the discussions here.

By all means DON’T do us any favors. But do yourselves a favor and stick with the other blog sites.

It's a shame that these types of exchanges even exist right now. Unfortunately, it takes away from what's more important, i.e., the Raiders winning.

To the game.

Chiefs haven't made a lot of mistakes this year, but that doesn't mean they won't. This is a young team, ready to be exploited.

Raiders will need to stay aggressive on both sides of the ball, and keep the 12th man in the game.

You're right... I fall for it every time. Your posts are pretty much torture to read. You've been whining like a 13 yr old for three years... and I said it 5 months ago... your entire reputation here is predicated on the Raiders sucking ass this year... now that they might actually be a playoff team you want to sweep all that under the rug and whine that people like me and PR are holding you responsible for your previous posts (without extending anything like an olive branch to justify it.)

Sure thing bubs... just pretend you didn't think this team was completely fucked from top to bottom, especially if they keep winning. You only constructed 3000 posts saying otherwise... and bullied anyone that was optimistic.

Now suddenly we are supposed to join hands and sing Kumbaya?

Ok CJ... I do enjoy your football posts.

I envision a shootout, or a Raider blow out. I simply don't see a SF-like battle... not with McFadden. He's the Raider MVP IMO... oh, and anyone else notice how much improved the o-line is with Gallery back?

If the Raider defense dominates the LOS like they have the last two weeks... I think KC is dead in the water unless their STs go crazy.

The D-line looked more dominant last week than anytime in the last 2 decades, IMO.

Was it a lark, or was Seattle's o-line that bad?

My god people. Get with the program. We've got a division run on the line on Sunday.

If it does rain, I think advantage home team. Especially with the size on our OL. It should slow down speed rushers a step or two giving them a chance to maul the Chefs DL a little and wear them down.

One place we will miss Nnamdi is in run support. He is a solid tackler and has made some very good plays shedding blocks by the receivers and forcing the runner back inside.

Reece will take the place of Zach Miller in the passing game. Myers is a decent TE but he doesn't stretch the field like Zach can.

I think Jackson will be more West Coasty in the passing game to start.

Reece also has shown very good ability in the running game which will keep their front seven more honest when Campbell fakes the ball to him. Most fullbacks you can ignore.

Just a few things I'm looking for.

Previous to the last 4 games (a span of 7.25 years) the Raiders have been a major disappointment. The views expressed during this 7.25 year time-frame are naturally going to be negative opinions. It is a results oriented business and the results were horrible.

Over the past 4 weeks the Raiders have made considerable strides which is what all of us having been hoping and waiting to happen.

The extension the league gave worked out. I read where a local media outlet partnered with the team on a two for one promotion on the remaining tickets. They must be the ones carrying the game. They want that local advertising revenue.

As Blitz Chick says, “Loud and Proud”. That’s what the crowd needs to be.

Now I’m going to call out “Die Hard” McClain. He was calling for the fans to show up also. Now, the ball is in his, and the team’s, court. We are 3-1 at home (long time waiting for that one), time to make that 4-1 for the fans, not for themselves, not for Mr. Davis, not for Cable this time, but for the fans.

During the game last week Reece jumped into the stands after his touchdown. The announcers called it the “Raider version of the Lambeau Leap”. I would like to start a campaign to label it the Black Hole Bounce. Identify it with the most ardent local supporters in the stands.

Now is the time for the team to stand up and say to the rest of the NFL, “The last two weeks is now the norm, and not a fluke”. The difference in the last two games is they were not close. Previous seasons our wins were pretty close. The Raiders dominated the entire game. Time of possession for the Geldings was 38:39 to 21:21 and for the Sea Chickens was 36:04 to 23:56. Twelve and eighteen minute gaps in TOP are very rare in the NFL.

Teams play off tendencies. Otherwise, why would they review film?

Avoiding tendencies is how we dismantled the last two opponents. This is critical today as well.

My 2-cents is that I’d like to see more pitch-outs to McFadden. IMO, he’s not a between the tackles RB. He’s much better in open space. Most importantly, go with what works. Don't stick with a plan that is failing, like we did against the 49ers.

Wet weather can make for sloppy conditions inside and may favor the passing game, i.e., unless it’s a hard rain. A lot of players claim they can grip the ball better when it's a little wet. Makes sense if you think about how common it is for a QB to lick his fingers before a play. Plus, it’s more difficult to defend patterns when slippery... advantage WR.

No doubt, this is the most important game in over seven years. It’s the playoffs!

It’s Game Day!

Official "House 0f Depression" Tail-Gate for crying false realities -n- conduct unbecoming a Raider...

There is allot more on the line this week than just the "W-L" record in the division -n- keeping the momentum going...It's all about the "False Cries" and those huge platters of "Crow" that each -n- everyone of you crying bitches now need to devour...And I don't care how distasteful it is in your mouths or how sickened you become by it you shall eat and you shall eat it all...

All week during a time of celebration you have come out in attacking mode going at the throats of those who have said...

"Told You So"...Well here it is upon you -n- you haven't a leg to stand on talking such total shit against us...The Faithful...

Down to it:

#1...Todd Haley -n- Scot Poili....

Your claims were that we did not conduct a reasonable/legitimate search for a "HC" and we were in violation of corporate standards by not having a suitable "GM" in place...But now that "KC" went and out did us with these two they were going to improve and dominate over us...They would win while we remain at the bottom of the NFL...

Well now here it is on the line...It's all on the line for real and a huge "Told You So" is waiting to be posted when we take this game...And our Division the AFCW!!!...

#2...Josh McDaniels and the same exact issues as you posted he would take them to the top of the division while we remain "Bottom Feeders"...

Well now just look around at who has become the "Bottom Feeders" despite you false pimping...

#3...HC Tom Cable whom I pimped saying we need continuity while you bashed him with your usual "We failed to make a bona fide search" and you posted that crap the past 2 seasons in a row calling for his head...

Well now just look where he has his team perched contrary to your false demand...

#4..."MGP Mr Al Davis whom you scorned posting he was too old and incapable of running a multimillion $$$$ corp in his "80"s and called for NFL -n- fan intervention to have him removed...You posted he was archaic and incapable of change living out some senile fantasy removed from the modern times of the NFL and his ways will no longer work in the league...

Well look around...His ways appear to be working just fine despite you false denials...

#5...You continually posted that us fans who were loyal and faithful threw all those bad times were delusional and blind and that there were no clear plans in place to take us back to a winning organization...

Well now...Are we 4-n-4 and climbing that mountain or not despite you false accusations...

#6...All the draft picks that have now shown signs of being good picks and all the "FA" who are doing the same while you bashed each -n- everyone posting Al Davis was stupid going after speed instead of football "IQ"...

Well now just look around and this team was built on Al Davis moves that are paying huge dividends on that football field despite your false claims...

So there you have your meal for this bye...6 huge platters of "CROW" nicely prepared by the faithful despite you false claims of "Doom-n-Gloom"...

I don't think there is anyone on this board who pointed to this game today and said, "This game will have an impact on the AFC West, and NFL."

The key defensively is to force Cassell to beat us with a passing game. We cannot give up the big play on the ground. We cannot give up a 40+ yard run. The defense needs to play their assignments, plug the running gap, and press the Wideouts.

The key offensively is balance the run and passing game. Keep the Chiefs off-balance as to what is coming next. Establish the run, and keep grinding away. Play both sides of the ball with the Raider mentality of "We take what we want, when we want!"

Both teams are similar right now. We are playing a team that is are equal in that they need to establish the run for their offense to do anything. We both are considered by the media as "over-achievers" instead of respecting the talent that both teams have; because to be frank, both teams haven't lived up to their talent. This game means the same to both teams, in that it is a game of respectability, and a game that is going to define who they are as a team in this league; a team needing to be feared.

I'm nervous about this game, but confident. We came out flat against the Seahags, but won. We need to come out strong like we did against the Doncos, and punch them in the face from the get go. I predict the Raiders do just that, and win 31-17!

The refs did everything they could to prevent the win, but Jacoby Ford was too much for the refs to handle. Game ball, Ford.

Apparently, Cable has a short memory. He faked a FG against the Chiefs that cost the game. Today he fakes a punt at mid-field... and fails again. Perhaps that's Jackson's call, but it's a bad one, nonetheless.

Three in a row. 3-0 in the division. Bye week to get healthy. Very nice!

Great win despite the insane Zebras. Let's have a survey for the worst call of the game. 1)The P.I. on C.Johnson for trying to catch a ball
2)The unsportsman like conduct after J. Ford ran back a 94 yd kickoff and somebody jumped up to pat him on the back.
3)The fumble call on N. Miller while he was on his back and after about 10mins the stripes decided for no apparent reason to give KC the ball.

That was a genuine Raider win.

15 penalties, many of them completely bogus (by my count at least 10 blown calls), but the Raiders just kept coming. They never backed down, or shut it down.

At least two pass interference calls were absolutely ridiculous. A touchdown wasn't a touchdown, and two fumbles weren't fumbles. They made the Raiders use both of their reviews, winning both and receiving a bonus challenge. This was positively the worst officiating I have EVER witnessed in the NFL. Every official on the field should hang his head in shame.

But the Raiders won, because that's what the RAIDERS do. The Raiders are back.

Thank you Al Davis, and thank you Tom Cable.

Over the last three... We have blown out a division rival in the first quarter, we have worn down a cross conference division leader to tear them apart in the fourth quarter, and now we have hung on to outlast our division leader in OT.

We have won three important games in very different ways. The Raiders ARE back. I hope CBS takes note, as their crew laughed at the Raiders in pregame, compared Tom Cable to Curly Howard (3 Stooges) and assured us that KC would win the game.

Suck on this one CBS.

Ford was okay enough. His route running was decent at times, but he dropped as many balls as he caught. I have to give him credit for not giving up though. But he needs to play better than that. This game shouldn't have been as close as it was.

Panty, you've made several excellent observations over time here that I agree with. I just think that a lot of fans are reflecting their frustrations from JRuss onto JCamp, probably because they have similar styles Truth is, JCamp is not a very charismatic QB, and he's prone to making bad decisions from time to time (he's a bit of a space cadet); but the guy is consistent more times than not. He may frustrate us; but, he's near the top of NFL Qb's in the mid-tier range, and he has shown improvement each and every season. Until we get a Pro Bowl level QB, I have JCamp's back. I'm not going to place the burden on his shoulders entirely, especially with the grit he's shown me coming out of a very tough adjustment period. The dude is playing the toughest position in the NFL with a very inconsistent cast of characters around him. I think he's had a huge influence on settling our guys down and getting them to focus more precisely on running their routes and playing within the system.

Onandon-

I have to disagree with your assessment of Ford. He was more than ok. He had at least three highlight reel plays, two tough deep balls (one was essentially the game winner), plus a kick return for a TD.

And he found separation (including a come-backer) for critical first downs late in the game.

That's a bit more than ok. If we're counting drops, he didn't have six, and he definitely wasn't alone... except in that he was the only rookie.

I think he ended up with six catches for 148 yards and a return TD. That's probably the best stat line of any Raider WR for a couple seasons, or more (without checking of course).

6:49 PM
Blogger AvantGrape said...

NYRaider, maybe I overstated the amount of dropped balls, but I counted three easy catches that he dropped in the first half, and one of them was a sure-fire TD pass and probably JCamp's best pass of the game. Did you watch the first half. I'm all for praising the kid for his fight, but he hasn't been consistent in catching the ball. Great game for the kid, but he could have done better, and we're going to need our received to hold onto the ball going forward if we are to be a playoff contender.

6:54 PM
Blogger H said...

Calico,

Last winter I said I wouldn't criticize the refs until this season. Well, times up. That was one of the worse officiated games I've seen in years.

Not just the bad call on Johnson for interference (Soloman Wilcox couldn't find the foul), or the ridiculous "horse collar" call, but Wilcox also pointed out that on the near interception broken up by Brandon Myers that Myers was being held, yet no call.

Now, can a player be both offensive player of the week AND special teams player of the week.

Six catches for 146 and a kickoff for a TD.

Now, that the whining is over. Our rush defense may now be for real. We held the top rushing team in the league to 104. They had 98 in regulation. We had 112 all in regulation.

Now, let's get everybody healthy and go kick the Squealers butt.

There are certain individuals who have constantly belittled the Raiders to the point that several of us question their hearts...Are they even Raider fans at all or just "HateTripper"s in Raider cloth so to speak...Pretentious Bastards....They spent more of their time trying to find fault with Mr Davis and his organization and the coaches than posting about anything relating to the game of football...

"Ford was okay enough. His route running was decent at times, but he dropped as many balls as he caught. I have to give him credit for not giving up though. But he needs to play better than that. This game shouldn't have been as close as it was.

Were you watching the game? Seriously. Ford had the following 4 plays that were the BIGGEST contribution to our win:

#1 - 94 yard kick off return TD that opened up the 2nd half and breathed life into the team and swung the momentum. (7-10)

#2 - 37 yard reception at the beginning of of 4th Q that led to a FG (17-13)

#3 - 29 yard reception on 1st and 20 with :24 to go in the game where he literally stole the ball from the DB. This led to our tying FG (20-20)

#4 - 47 yard reception on the Raiders 1st play in OT that led to the game winning FG. (23-20)

"he needs to play better than that"?

A rookie who produces 6 receptions, 148 yards, 24.7 avg., 94 yard kickoff return TD, and makes HUGE, PIVOTAL plays needs to play better?

Sorry but you are way off the mark.

I think the NFL limiting challenges to two per game needs to be addressed, especially with incompetent refs such as today... I think if you win a challenge you should be entitled to three challenges instead of two. The Miller fumble would have been overturned under review, but the Raiders were out of challenges because the refs had their head up their asses.

9:38 PM
Blogger AvantGrape said...

Hey, I agree! Ford was a significant part of the win. No doubt about it. His stats are are big-time. The kid has to be happy.

All I'm saying though is that he fought off a few boneheaded plays and dropped the best pass of the game, which would've made this an easier game for us. Sorry. I'm not ready to buy into the idea that we have anything but a very inconsistent group of receivers. I'm all for being proved wrong of course. But it's going to take more than one game to sell me on Ford as a go-to receiver; not that we have one anyway, so he's as good as any.

Yeah, I'm probably being a bit too critical; but then I think that's the case with those who don't count JCamp's contribution as a key component of the team's offensive resurgence. Anyway, I'll concede that I'm being too picky, and we move onto the next game and hope that this kid continues to develop. We certainly need at least one of our receivers to start standing out week to week. The kid is a little short, but who knows.

I think this game does a lot to our attitude as well. It was big in epic portions, and not just because we've gained ground on the division lead.
We played sloppy, and had a lot of things going against us (the refs, pre-snap penalties, int, bad special teams, etc); but for the first time since '02-'03; we were able to overcome those calls, come from behind, and win. We faced adversity, and slapped that adversity in the face! That is going to be BIG for us in the self-esteem part of the team. We can overcome adversity! HUGE WIN FOR THE RAIDERS!!!!!

I'll tell you what. Go argue with Tommy Kelly.

“We ain’t changed nothing from first day of training camp up until this point,’’ Kelly said. “We’re just doing a better job executing what he’s calling. That’s it.

“Ain’t nothing changed. Nobody went in the meeting room and came up with some exotic defense. This is the same defense we’ve been running, we’re just executing.

“Lamarr (Houston) and (Matt) Shaughnessy holding the edge, turning the run back inside and me and Big Rich (Seymour) clean it up. We’re just executing. I just hope it continues.’’

JMAC has always said its more execution than scheme. And one person that seems to be benefiting from Seymour is Kelly. He looks like a completely new player. I'm not happy with Seymour's pre-snap penalties... but the guy is a frigging MONSTER this year at tackle.

And no, I am not going to miss that first round draft pick... we needed veteran leaders on defense.

Its why you will see NE with all those draft choices still floundering around in the playoffs (and losing to teams like Cleveland)... they traded away or let go every single leader they had on defense. Vrabel, Semour, Malloy, all are key players on other teams...

Nate,

Couldn't agree more. Huge win.

On the Jacoby Ford controversy.

Officially he had six receptions for 148. He was officially targeted 9 times. He caught 66.7% of balls thrown to him. He certainly did not drop as many as he caught. But, he certainly did came through in the clutch for us.

He also had 4 kick returns for 158. In all he had 306 All Purpose Yards. All in all a decent days work.

Also, two clutch kicks by Janakowski after his miss.

Jonesy,

As a charter member of The Crew I’m damn happy. But, hey, that’s just me. See how I’m smiling. Don’t understand why folks still want to continue a family squabble about who said what when after the past five weeks. Let’s all enjoy the ride together.

The problem with saying “I was right, I was right” is that it can all come crashing down with a three week reversal of fortune. That’s why I never engage in “I told you so’s”. Well, except for 1980, but that was after the Super Bowl.

Having said all that Tommy Kelly said something after the game that is being lost in the shuffle. He was asked about the change that has come over this team.

He spoke about the roster turnover the last two offseasons. He said something to the affect, “Al loves all his players and hates to let them go.” That’s my interpretation. I’ve always said Al Davis can be loyal to a fault. It’s an admirable quality. Not always successful, but admirable. He was loyal to Moss and Sapp while they were on the team, and both of them crapped on him when they left.

Yet there has been a drastic change in the number starters, new folks on the roster and new coaches from two years ago to now. The only constant during that time besides Al Davis is Tom Cable. Make of it what you will.

Now, lost in all this euphoria of the past five weeks (4-1) is how the defense is playing. Yes, they gave up a lot of yards against the Dolts, but made some big plays when the pressure was on. They played well against the Whiners except for the one big play. They pressured Cassel into an interception at the end of the first half on the goal line. The last three weeks they have shut down the oppositions running game. The Chefs got 104 but were averaging close to 200. Prior to Sundays game Cassel had only been sacked like five times. We got him for three and came close to at least three more (if only these 300 pound guys could run a 4.3 forty).

This is the way we envisioned them playing from the start of the season. If the defense continues to play like this I like our chances against the Squealers.

By the way, McClain had to leave the game with a hip injury. Any word on that?

IMO, it's scheme AND execution....

I don't remember seeing so much blitzing before, or disguising defensive formations. We've discussed these problems many times here, so it should come as no shock to anyone that those are variations of scheme we are NOT used to seeing.

Here's why we should start Ski at QB against Pitt:

A) Campbell demonstrated that he can go back into hibernation during a game (even if he did pull it together at the end).

B) Campbell holds the ball way too long, which is bad news for a pressure D like Pitt.

C) the players always seem to rally around Ski.

D) Ski played his career-best against the Steelers in the last meeting.

“We ain’t changed nothing from first day of training camp up until this point,’’ Kelly said. “We’re just doing a better job executing what he’s calling. That’s it.

Here’s my interpretation of that statement:

They’ve been putting this defense together since Marshall got there. At the start of camp they put in five new starters in the front seven and a new CB. They’ve stuck with the program stretching it each week. Now they have it just about where they want it. Everyone knows and understands their assignments and are sticking to the game plan.

Example:

Early in the season Huff and McClain were caught out of position on some running plays that burned us. Not so the last three weeks. When Branch went out Sunday, Mitchell came in and made a clutch tackle to prevent a first down. McClain came out with the hip injury and Brown came in. The defense continued to stop the run.

The biggest uptick in blitzing started predominately in the Dolt’s game. There was some early on but it was a slow progression up to then. Waufle’s work with the DL has now got them in sync allowing for more blitzes.

In other words, they ain’t changed anything, but the coaches and players have stuck with the program and it’s now paying off. Your execution doesn’t get any better if you don’t keep coaching it and practicing it.

I'll go back to a quote from Nnamdi a year or 2 ago, he said the Raiders would play an aggressive, blitzing style defense in preseason, then when the regular season started, they wouldn't play that way anymore. We have all seen the Raiders defense in preseason play a different scheme as compared to regular season.

I then go to the quote from Sapp on NFL network, he said Al would watch the film of practise during the week and then Thursday night would meet with the DC and tell him what he could and couldn't use as the scheme. What we are seeing now, is the unedited version of the defense that Sapp said Al edited.

To me, that means Al Davis has FINALLY backed off, this is all I have asked for. The "crew" can try and make it something else to satisfy themselves, whatever. As long as we are winning now, it doesn't really matter, does it?

Jones,

First off I wouldn't put any stock in anything that came from the general direction of Warren Sapp. He throws bombs with no backup just to make himself look good.

Plus, remember he was gone before Marshall arrived and the first offseason after Cable took over.

This ain't the same staff and, for the most part, it ain't the same players.

And, believe me as much as I complained about the way SOB ran the defense on game day, there was a decided difference from game one against the Thumbtacks even though we didn't have the same results as of late.

The aligments were different, the movement of personnel was different, the rotation on the line was different. Everything was just different. Nothing static.

I disagree, the scheme has changed. We saw this, a game here a game there during SOB and Marshall. Remember the "getting yelled at" quote. That was Nnamdi as well, a guy who has been in Oakland at the time Sapp was. What has happened, the shackles have been taken off, the players are now being used to their potential. Seymour was just another Raider DT that was hardly noticed last year and the first few games this year. What changed? Huff has turned into an impact player, Branch is no longer getting torched. They have been placed in a scheme that allows them to be successful. The players know it and you can see a different attitude and aggressivness that was not there when playing the basic defense they were. To me, it's obvious.

JONES

As far as Sapp not being a credible quote, I disagree with this also. The guy was in the room, the guy was a vet of the league, knew how other teams and the Raiders worked from the inside. Why would he throw that quote out there like that? On NFL network? Does he hate the Raiders? Or does he just tell it like it is, no matter how much it coils one's sphynkter?

Then you can take the Randy Moss quote, I know he is a headcase, but he was quoted saying something about fishy things going on. Then you have the guy that Cable punched, he was still on the staff for Al's lawsuit vs Kiffin. Al's control is very well documented, to me, it looks as though he has backed off that, as he did when Gruden was coach.

I'm seeing a coaching staff that is ALLOWED to coach in these last few games. Maybe Cable has earned it in Al's eyes or Al has finally understood that he needs to let go, can't say for sure. But watching them, it's different and through the coaches before Cable, we didn't see this. SOB was an obvious lapdog of Al's, you cannot deny that, Marshall has been up to this point...what has changed?

Why would Sapp throw out a quote liek that? He's a grandstander.

I look for him to any day now take credit for Tommy Kelly's play this season. He went on and on about what a "monster" he and created.

Also, he was in what room? And why is he the only one saying it?

I'm not saying Al Davis didn't meet with his coaching staff. I'm sure he did.

Also, Kelly said since the first day of training camp. Was he talking about training camp three years ago or this year? I say this year.

Running any scheme is useless if you don't have the personnel to do it. Now Marshall has the parts he needs. They have been coached up and now they are clicking. All this is a process that leads to the current success.

That's just the way I interperate it.

For Marshall being "yelled at". Folks want to take that as he got yelled at. Others take it as he was making a joke.

Point is there is nothing to support either side of the argument, so I'm moving on.

From Cable on the second challenge:

"In the replay that they showed, his left thigh and knee is out of bounds before the right foot hit in bounds. It was clear. He said he didn't get that picture in the booth. So, I don't understand that."

Interesting. That’s what I thought I saw in the replay. Why wouldn’t they have that angle in the replay booth? I thought they had the same replays as the network.

There are probably a season’s worth of “apology” letters that could be issued from Sunday’s game. To both teams.

One note of interest if you look at the replay of the pass in regulation that set up the tying field goal. Number 24 of the Chefs was begging for offensive pass interference. Thing is Ford just picked his pocket and took the ball away from him.

Under the heading of “Don’t look now” Janakowski is leading the league in scoring by 20 points. I wish it were 23, but take what you can get.

Murphy, Nnamdi, Zach Miller, McClain, Branch, Gradkowski. Those starters missed all or part of the game and we still won.

Here's one example:

Michael Huff had 1.5 career sacks in four years as a starter leading up to 2010. He has 2.0 sacks this year.

It's no mystery that Huff has played closer to the LOS this year. He is playing the run much better and he has been involved in blitz packages that did not exist in previous seasons.

Raiders are steeped in man-to-man coverage, so much so that they struggle to play zone and have mostly abandoned it.

There's no question we are seeing more m-t-m, complemented (as it should be) by more blitzing.

Who's actually pulling the trigger on this is up for debate, but it's clearly different than last year. IMO, it's a combination of variation in scheme and better overall execution.

Blitz is nothing new: Why???...

#1...Scheme has not changed form the 4-3 base but as noted a 5-Man Front "Big-Nickle" was added against "SD" in the 4th quarter and used at times sense....With a 5-Man Front it's NOT blitzing when 5 rush the "QB"-n-"RB"s...But they do run blitzes out of that formation...Even at times having 6-7 on the line threatening to come...

#2...We were a Blitz heavy team in the past during Madden/Flores/"Rat" out of the 3-4 Scheme so trying to call it a Non Al Davis blitzing "D" is totally pathetic/misinformed...We also blitzed under Willie Shaw and later under Breshnihan during the Gruden era especially when Our "O" was producing well and the "D" did not have to feel cautious...

#3...The blitz is most effective when used at the proper times and disguised...When your "O" is completely inept and can't sustain the slightest amount of consistency the Blitz is very dangerous and risky...We were forced to play very conservative "D" during those periods of time...Now as the "O" has improved so has the "D" and is playing much less cautiously than in the recent past...That is the normal progression of team development not anything "Mystical" or "Magical"...

#4...This a run Blitz by design...We now get to the "RB"s before they can gain momentum and make them change direction taking away their power/speed-n-agility...That was visible consistently yesterday against the "Squaws"...At the same time we get good pressure on the "QB"s while maintaining gap control...

#5...We are now the #1 team in Sacks...That's an example of the type of pressure we are now getting in their backfields...We have improved immensely in Run "D" which is also a barometer of how well designed the Blitzing is...The returning of the "DL" coach from the Gruden era has made a huge mark on this "D"...All facets of improvement in how well the base scheme is implemented -n- executed...

Has Al Davis Sat Down???

Come'on....Would he ever...Has his thrust for "V"s diminished...Has his hunger for notoriety taken a back seat...Has he lost his lust for searching for that perfect player with anti-typical size/speed/athletic quotient...Has he lost his desire to be imaginative with his favorite toy...

NO...He has NOT...But as a coaching staff prove they can produce by what they do more leeway is given...Simple as that...Just like Madden of the past who was allowed to instill a 3-4 Scheme where the only the 4-3 had been before...Or Flores coached a team led by it's "TE"s -n- "RB"s in receptions rather than it's "WR"s...Or Shell I was allowed to move the team back to a 4-3 scheme as was originally fielded...Or Gruden was allowed to instill a "WCO" that Al Davis hated which was allowed also under Mike White...

Defensively, when we do a three and out like we did in OT to get the ball for the win, we grow and gain confidence. I have to admit I cringed when they won the toss in OT, thinking we'd never get the ball back... past bad luck and losing habits. Yes young child... sometimes in the NFL you have to have patience.

SD stunk for how long before becoming a contender every year?

Actually, outside of NE, Pitts, and Phily, most teams have 7 year no-playoff droughts... obviously not as BAD as the Raiders suckiness before this year... but I've always said the difference between losing 11 games and 9 games a year doesn't mean SQUAT in the big picture.

Missing the playoffs is missing the playoffs no matter how many losses a team has.

Well Waste, if I can do it, maybe you can too?.......I mean, Am I the one impersonating you on here? Is that mature? Sometimes one has to look in the mirror to find some TRUTH.....

Come on Waste. It is very obvious the scheme has changed, saying it's the same as the 70's and 80's is just another example of flawed reasoning. Todays game isn't the same, the problem was Al's continuing to insist on playing the 70's defense. Now the Blitzes are coming from all over and very well disguised, back then, no blitzes and coverages disguised as they are today. QB's are much more advanced at picking up and exploiting blitzes. If you aren't fooling the QB, you are going to get burned. Steve Young laughed at how simple the Raiders defense was on Monday Night Football last year, do you think he would be saying the same thing after these last few games? Don't think so.

AS far as Al goes, he did it once when he hired Gruden, so don't put it past him that he has done it again. Everyone in the world saw the change was needed, well, except for a few. The draft was different this year and now the defense is playing attack defense and the O came out with the Wildcat. This is all different, did Al change up or did he just back off? Al wants to win, he saw that his way wasn't getting it done, so he let's go of the reigns and has allowed the coaches to do what they feel needs to be done. As well, I'm sure the players input is being heard.

Huff has sacks, Branch has sacks, Wimbley has sacks from both the LB and DE positions. I believe we have four players with 3.5 or more.

In fact as of Sunday we are second in the league in sacks. Granted, some of the teams behind us have had their bye weeks, but we are still tied for second.

Who is pulling the trigger? I suspect it is Marshall in concert with Cable. One of the announcers in the last few games said the defense was taking on the agressive personality of their head coach. That during interviews Cable stated this was the type of defense he was trying to build.

Also, agressive pressure defenses are the type that Marshall ran at Seattle.

That's my guess. And, if it has Al's blessing, well he does say "Just Win Baby!"

Doesn't that kind of lend to Jone's assertion that the scheme is different?

I don't think you can say our LBs, CBs and S's are suddenly getting better at sacking the QB.

Fact is, these players are just now (this year) being asked to blitz more regularly.

That's part of a new scheme.

I'm not informed enough to tell who is making that decision, so I won't try. Not my style to look a gift horse in the mouth.

It took you 2 words to prove who you are....Like I said...Your other post was out of character and now your right back in it...I didn't have to wait -n- see very damn long now did I...So now let's see if you can define something football related without your usual misinterpretations of what was posted....

Re: Mid "70"s -to- mid "80"s was in the base "3-4 Scheme" NOT the base "4-3 Scheme" that we play today...Obviously that was changed...

To make blanket statements claiming that the "Scheme"s have changed without the slightest connotations as to which/what/where/how and using that as "Prof" that our "MGP" has stepped down is superficial to say the least...

Define "Scheme" and what has changed...

As noted we play in the base "4-3 Scheme" -w- Nickle-n-Dime packages...I noted that we started employing a "5-Man Front Big-Nickle" in the 4th quarter against "SD" -w- several blitz packages...That's noted because I don't recall seeing that before on a Raider team...

Stipulation: NO memory of it does NOT prove it is NEW!!...

I posted info on the types of "Blitz Schemes" run by NFL teams...Nothing is new there just variations on how or when their implemented and several different versions can be utilized in a single contest...

"5-1-5" is a "Nickle Package" or is it a base scheme...

Question: When players -n- coaches spoke of a "Hybrid" Scheme were they referring to the "5-1-5" we have seen sense the 4th quarter of the "SD" game...Were they referring to a group of "Blitz Schemes" that were being implemented during this season's camps and orchestrated in the games of late...Or is it something else that has yet to be identified...

My take as noted by "BR" -n- "H" is that what we see now is the aftermath of what was being installed during this season's camps and the personnel finally get it well enough for it to be employed in the past few weeks....

What does that mean:

Quite simply that Mr Davis hired Marshal as "DC" to instill a specific type of "D" that was perhaps much more aggressive than that run by "SOB"...Was that at the request of "HC" Cable...Possible but I don't recall...They (Davis/Cable/Marshal) than went out a acquired the necessary players to run it prolley starting with Seymour last season when he became available...

So really in retrospect is there any indication at all that Mr Davis has "Sat Down"....I most certainly don't see it...If anything the "OldMan" has stood up!!!...

We all know Al took pride in his defense, he on more than a couple of occasions took credit for the defense in the Art2 year. 3 different HC's and SOB stayed, the defense played the same way throughout this period. You take into account the quotes from players and it is very obvious how Al likes the defense to be played. Now that has changed, as you say, with Al's blessing. So in essence, Al has backed off the defense because it is no longer playing Al's scheme = limited blitzing, no stunts, safety deep, just beat the guy in front of you. It's very obvious to those who don't have a closed mind about the issue.

The "WildCat" was brought in when we drafted "D-Mac" as that was his play from Arkansas...We have run it now for 3 seasons but it now has an expanded role as does it's feature back...Other teams also tried it but it seemed to die out in the NFL...

The "WildHog" was also tried and I fully expect to see it again...Maybe against Pitts...

Fake "FG"s are also now being utilized with very mixed results...Now remember that was what Cable initiated when he became "HC"...

The "Unbalanced Line" began to be used when Hue was hired as "OC" but was originally of Shell I design with the Raiders...It mostly failed back than and was scrapped...

Dump-offs to the "RB"s -n- "TE"s are part of an old scheme used during Flores along with power running but Hue has added some new wrinkles like slants and some well designed screens...

The End Around/Reverse/Flea-Flicker/Option/Direct Hike to the "RB" and such that we have seen in our "O" this season have all been done before with varied success...The difference is Hue is making it work...

As has been noted before:

The more things change the more they stay the same and nothing is new to the NFL...

NYRaider,

I'm not one of the ones saying it isn't. Never have been. I think the scheme is different.

In fact if you will go back to earlier in the season you will find where I've talked about how they are lining up different. No more three LB's five yards off the line.

I believe I made some of those observations in the Tennessee game. Saying we played the run fairly well except for the long run by Johnson. Primarily because of how the defense was different.

A linebacker on the line of scrimmage on the tight end. You didn't know if he was going to blitz or jam the tight end.

I was pointing out how things were different. Where as last spring we were arguing how Al Davis wouldn't let it happen.

It's not an "I told you so." Just making observations.

It was evident from the draft to the trades that there was a conserted effort to do a total makeover on defense. New people, new scheme. Takes a little time to sync it all together.

My main assertion is, as Kelly said, they've been doing this since the first day of camp this year. Now, they have reached the point where it can be unleashed in its full glory.

If nothing else, I believe I've been pretty consistent.

It was all just an elaborate scheme devised to discredit Mr Davis as having a part in it's design or implementation while demanding that the "OldMan" has been removed from the throne saying he has been "Sat Down"...

Total Bull-Shit from the very 1st words...

"We all DON'T know. We make assumptions and offer opinions"

WE don't know what? If Al has said it himself, if players are saying it, if you can see it by watching the games, then yes, we do or at least I know.

Why bother, it's the same ole "crew", I'm glad the Raiders are changing but very "what else is new" with the "crew" staying the same.

Denial and blind loyalty are not good qualities. When trying to make points or have a debate, it is IMPOSSIBLE because of these 2 traits. No matter what proof is served, no matter what facts are presented, it will never make a dent. So, WHY BOTHER?????

"I was pointing out how things were different. Where as last spring we were arguing how Al Davis wouldn't let it happen"...

Maybe all the empty seats helped Al make his decision on letting it happen. Fan discontent can go a long way in showing an owner that we want change. My problem with it is, why did it take so long? It was obvious a while back.

There will be a bidding war but Mike Vick can be had at the end of this season. Bicker all you'd like about who's better, Grad or JC, but I'd like to think we need an upgrade either way should we like to return the Lombardi Trophy to it's rightful home at 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway.

The one thing Cable has been saying continuously to the team and media is "Just cut it loose". I know this can have many broad meanings and context but if you cut it to the bone, it is saying "play fast, play aggressively".

As H pointed out brilliantly, our LBs are no longer squatting 5 yards off the LOS.

AS NYR pointed out, our safeties are blitzing more regularly.

As Jones said, we are playing more of an attacking D.

Still not the biggest Vick fan, but I have to admit after watching the highlights of him from Sunday, the dude is just sick. Not just his speed and elusiveness, but his arm. The ball is coming out like a laser.
