Saints Pregame Take

I believe in the following maxim that I heard recently: the NFL preseason may not count, but it matters.

In recent years, the preseason has told us a lot about the Raiders. In 2008 and 2009, it became increasingly evident during the preseason that the Raiders were flailing. In both preseasons, they lost three out of four games. Last year, they won three out of four, and subsequently played their best season in ages.

Exactly two years ago (August 29, 2009), the Raiders played the Saints and produced a jaw-dropping debacle. At the time, folks tried to convince me that it didn't matter. It did matter. The Raiders were unprepared, outpaced and outclassed, words that could easily describe the season that followed.

So here we are again, playing the Saints in the third week of the preseason. I suggest that we all watch very carefully, because there will likely be plenty of tea leaves to read. The game might not count, but it will probably matter.

Raiders | Lito Sheppard signed
Fri, 26 Aug 2011 10:07:24 -0700

The Oakland Raiders have signed free-agent CB Lito Sheppard (Vikings). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Read more: http://www.kffl.com/hotw/NFL?page=0#ixzz1W9rgIk3k

"CB" Lito Sheppard

9 Seasons
117 Games 72 Starts 2 Sacks 19 Int's 3 FF
264 Tackles 39 Assists

sounds like vet minimum

The fact both players are here is an indication they’re willing to sign for the veteran minimum — as was Sheppard’s agent saying in an e-mail to all 32 teams his client would play for such a deal.

"RT"...

Did it mean anything in "06" under Shell II when we went 4-n-1 in the preseason only losing in the final week to Seattle???

It's most important to view what transpired while the starters are in...

Week #1 that was for 6 plays on "D"

Week #2 that "D" played one quarter without "CB" Cris Johnson...A rookie "DVD" took his place..

The "O" has not yet played a snap with all our starters on the field or many of our depth...

Specialist:

"D-Mac"
"TJ"
Reece
Murphy
Chaz
Ford

"OL"
Bruce Campbell
Stephen Heyer

Now this week "TE"s are prolley out

Boss
Ausbury
Myers

Specialist:

Chaz
Murry
"D-Mac"

So it's "Next Man Up!!

Now I'm not just making excuses...I posting that all this needs to be taken into consideration when observing this game...Not time to get that "Doom-n-Gloom" banner out and start waving it around...

The 1st half should count for something if we keep our healthy starters in that long...

QB Terrelle Pryor on the field in No. 6 jersey. Taking snaps warming up.

Speculations:

The most notable names, like Tatupu and Tinoisamoa, are coming off of knee surgeries and are huge health concerns. Worst case scenario the Raiders bring these guys in on Tuesday Sept. 13th, because from that date on veteran contracts are no longer guaranteed for the entire season.

"LB" Julian Peterson

La Secla cut & Alan Pelc waived/injured

That brings us to 89 roster spots. Another signing coming today/tomorrow or are they just gonna roll with 89 til 1st cutdown day?

"TP" has very small Cap hit for next 4 seasons:

Raiders | Terrelle Pryor contract update
Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:20:49 -0700

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor's four-year deal is worth about $2.7 million, including a $586,000 signing bonus.

He's already the #4 "QB" on the roster...Than come week #6 Boller will be released and "TP" will gain the #3 rank which is where he should remain throughout the remaining season...

I'm projecting that Trent Edwards will win the #1 -w- "JC" as the #2...

After the season "JC" will most likely not be extended and "TP" will move to the #2 position...That's how I will expect him to enter our 2012 Training Camp...

On Pryor’s sixth snap, he fumbles again. Picks it up and takes off for big gain. Put that one in the playbook, Hue

WoW!!...Can even turn a mistake into a big play...Well at least in practice with that "Red Jersey"...

Seriously though...When has there been so much speed and athletic ability at the "QB" position...

With the speed now on this "O" it's going to be a real nightmare for "DC"s..."IF" the "QB" can do his job on time on target!!!

That's why I suspect Edwards will win the starting role...That hesitation by "JC" will kill the speed on this roster...That speed has no beneficial effect if receivers have to wait on that "Pig" to arrive...

We now have 2 "WR"s with tremendous speed and make-up ability that can go and get the poorly thrown ball...

Ford as we saw last season...

Moore the rookie sensation of this camp...

This will be pay huge dividends while making up for "QB" errors...

Coach Hue Jackson says Terrelle Pryor ‘looks like a quarterback’

“Coach won’t let me wear No. 2,” Pryor said. “Why, I don’t know? You tell me. He won’t let me wear No. 2. I’m just going off what coach tells me.”

Dammit!!!...I could have salvaged that "JePurpleDrank" jersey by stitching a huge red line threw the name and adding "PRYOR" below it...Now that would have been funny!!!..

“The guy is big, athletic,” Jackson said. “He can throw it. He looks like a quarterback, feels like a quarterback, sounds like a quarterback, and I’m very excited to work with him.”

“No, I don’t have (anything to prove),” Pryor said. “Obviously, anytime you come in fresh, you have something to prove. I’m just trying to get better. I’m not here to answer any critics. I’m just trying to answer myself. I’m the biggest critic. I don’t really hear the other critics anyway. I’m the biggest critic and I’m just trying to prove it to myself. That’s all I’m trying to do.”

The only deep pass he threw was underthrown and well behind wide receiver Chad Jackson, who made a nice adjustment and impressive catch.

"Hanging Chad"...Like the old political strife this guy just won't go away...Hope he makes the roster....

“Not nervous, but you’re getting so much information and you’re just trying to … my mind wants to accomplish it, I want to accomplish it,” Pryor said. “But it’s just overwhelming.”

New "FA" "CB" Lito Sheppard speaking about "M-M" coverage:

“That’s what I primarily did the majority of my career,” Sheppard said. “It’s definitely tough on the corners but, hey, that’s what I do, that’s what got me into this league and, obviously, that’s what’s going to keep me around or take me out.”

Says he chose the Raiders over the Giants...Perhaps the coverages are the reason why...He didn't fare as well playing Zone after leaving Philly....It's very possible that he resurrects his career in OakTown the way so many others have in the past...So here's to hoping this 2 time "PB"er wins a starting role...

Here is a definite word on the Raiders' front office:

Jerry Mac just responded to me on Twitter that Mark Davis was in attendance for at least 17 of 22 practices.

Very interesting imo

So although Al has not been seen his son obviously has so is obviously involved with the team in some unspecified capacity...

Like maybe that help that Al said he had but wouldn't name outright...What better way to introduce his son as the hare apparent than to just have him involved in day to day business and exposure to the public...That makes for a very smooth transition if that's what's about to take place...

Funny...

I'm hoping later the #2 will be given him...I think it's because the team doesn't want to have to answer allot of questions regarding past mistakes and get that all referenced to Pryor as he's just trying to adjust to this level...Dig up what has already been buried and heap it all on the new guy's shoulders...

Maybe a little later when the dust settles it won't cause so much attention or detraction...

So I'm holding onto the "JePurpleDrank" Jersey in hopes that I can cross out the name and add Pryor's...Just for laughs!!!

If your willing to buy into the philosophy of this thread than any Raider Fan should be happy with this:

Matt Cassel is struggling behind the Chiefs' leaky offensive line. The Chiefs' franchise quarterback has looked nothing like the efficient playmaker who guided Kansas City to a division title last season. He's completed only 12 of 27 passes for 182 yards in two preseason games, and failed to find a rhythm.

Part of his struggles can be attributed to the Chiefs' offensive line woes. The unit has failed to protect Cassel, whose accuracy has suffered amid constant harassment. Cassel completed only two passes to receivers in the loss to the Rams, resorting to a host of dump-off passes as defenders clamped down on deeper targets all night.

The offensive line's struggles have also limited the impact of the Chiefs' running game. Without a punishing ground attack to set up the timing of the play-action passing game, Cassel has been unable to push the ball downfield to Tony Moeaki and especially Dwayne Bowe. The duo made a living off deep throws executed off run-action last season, but those opportunities have been relatively nonexistent during the preseason.

Funny...A few short seasons ago it was pimped right here how Scot Polioluka -n- his "Haley Comet" would destroy the Raiders for season to come...Due Diligence!!!..But just the opposite has dominated that story line and now this...Sure seems like total disarray to me!!!...

not much pressure on brees, started blitzing on brees' last drive, a little too late.

Raider Nate 75...

Lito Shepard was a "M-M" coverage "CB" in Philly when he was a "PB"er but after leaving he has played Zone and no longer a factor...The Raiders brought him in to see if his play can be resurrected back to what it was in "M-M" at Philly...

Cris Johnson was out but expected to start at "CB" Monday nigh against Denver...But a agree we need to look for more help...The young players are going to take more time to develop...

Also the pass rush was without Seymour/Henderson so that's a huge factor...Can't just let "QB" sit back there all day...

"DB"s played Zone too often and were burned in it...The blitz was not timed well and failed to get pressure...

1st team played the run well but we need another "OLB" too...

Our depth hurts us...

Our "O" is nice and will force team to air out the "Pig" so our pass "D" really needs to step up...

We have some new weapons and they are very good one...

"WR" Derick Hagen as a "FA" is good and needs to start with Moore...

"TJ" is spectacular and I want to see him in the backfield with "D-Mac"...This will destroy most "DC"s...Reece didn't play either...

"TE" Boss as our new "FA" and Ausbury will be huge and bot were out for this game...

"OL" has questions yet unanswered...

Our New "O"...No Huddle Hurry-Up In OakTown????

Didn’t see it mentioned but that No Huddle Hurry-up led by “JC” was nice…When was the last time we had that…Question is was that already the design or something we went to in answer to them doing it to us…

Already were seeing that new "OC"s Play Book have it’s affects…Than too the play calling seemed to be going very well…There may be a few plays to second guess but all n all Hue was right on…

We didn’t see much creativity yet but we damn sure know it’s coming and with these weapons it will have a definite effect…The 2 long balls to “DHB” didn’t produce stats but they did give out the desired warning…Without the “D” crowding the box our run worked very well…I hope this continues:

T. Jones 13/81 yds 6.2 yd ave
M. Bush 5/32 yds 6.4 yd ave

Now add in “D-Mac” n Reece and that “Donkey” D" is going to get absolutely worked…They will be screening “Stamped”!!! in the “MuleValley”!!!…

Looks to me that we can add another "FA" starter to our Game Day Line Up and this "Mediot" agrees....

Jackson says he will base starting jobs and playing time off his players’ performance in practice and games. Well, then, is says here that Hagan and Moore should be the opening-day starters.

Hagan caught all six passes thrown his way Sunday night and racked up 121 yards. Moore caught three passes for 23 yards and continued to show that he is far from your average rookie.

Campbell said he has established a rapport with Hagan and knows full well what he’s capable of doing in this offense.

“He’s really come along … ,” Campbell said. “He’s always telling me in training camp, ‘J, all I need is an opportunity. The Giants, I was with them and I didn’t really get a chance to get in there and get that real opportunity. I’ll make plays and I feel like I can make this team.’ So, with that being said, he went out today and did what he had to do, personally, to make plays and show his ability and show his experience.”

Yup!!..And now as I remember there were allot of tears over the loss of our #1 receiver saying how can we get better when we only lost without additions...That really looks like the narrow minded view that I posted it was...Right!!...

We added one Rookie and One Vet to our "WR"s plus one rookie -n- one Vet to our "TE"s but in exchange we lost one vet at "TE"...

Now let me add this thing up...

4-1=3...Yup!!...We be on the plus side of that equation...Too bad I can't show that improvement yet to our "DB"s but it will be there too...Just you Wait -n- See!!...

Meanwhile we don't lose anything of merit constructing this list:

"WR"s

"DHB"
Murphy
Ford
Hagan
Moore
Chaz??...He wasn't really there so plus or minus it scarcely counts...

"TE"s

Boss
Ausbury
Myer??...If he sticks..

"RB"s/"FB"s...

Here again we made additions in a most positive fashion without any negligible losses..."TJ" is spectacular both running and catching...

"D-Mac"
"TJ"
Bush
Reece

"QB"s

"JC" has matured
Pryor awaits his turn
Boller/Edwards as back-up...

Now if we can just get that "OL" to gel we are in business big time on that side of the ball...

PantyRaider...Very Nice Work "MrD" Even If They Don't Give You Your Credit Earned!!!/_

FB-Reece
LT-Veldheer, Heyer
LG-Wisniewski, Loper
C-Satele, Wisniewski
RG-Carlisle, Campbell
RT-Barnes, Barksdale, Heyer
TE-Boss, Myers, Ausberry
WR-DHB, Moore, Hagan, Murphy, Chaz, Jacoby Ford, Nick Miller
K-Janikowski
P-Lechler
LS-Condo
Total Offense: 30

LDE-Houston, Scott
DT-Seymour, Bryant
DT-Kelly, Henderson
RDE-Shaughnessy, Moss
SOLB-Groves, Davis
MILB-McClain, Goethel
WOLB-Wimbley, Blackstock
SS-Branch, Mitchell
FS-Huff, Brown
DB-Routt, Johnson, McFadden, Van Dyke, Ware
Total Defense 23

I would like to see us cut Khalif Barnes and pick up Stinchcomb; and give us something solid on the LT side.
And if you think I'm smoking something about Wisniewski playing LG, that is the position he played with the first team last night. Did a great job too; better than Loper too.

Chaz is a serious question due to his constant injury problems...That "Glass Body" just can't hang...

So it's possible that another body is added here instead giving us 6 at "WR"...

On "D" I believe at least one of our "FA" "S"s will make the roster and also a "FA" at "CB"...Lito Sheppard who played well in "M-M" but has been nothing sense moving to the Zone...

I agree about bringing in the "OT" and we also need to lok at "OLB"...

Raider00...

Neither our "D" nor our "O" has taken the field yet in it's entirety...So some of what we have seen as weaknesses may in fact be improved...

Also we don't face many teams as good as the Saints this season...Our 1st two games don't present any match ups that remotely resemble them...Now our week #3 game against the Jets doesn't look as tough either the way their struggling on "O"...
"NE" will be our 1st huge test in week #4...Hopefully we have our shit together by than...

Everyone in the AFCW is struggling on one side of the ball or the other...

"SD" lost their "DC" and it really shows..

"KC" lost their "OC" and that really shows too...

Denver is in disarray and have now lost their starting "LB" and leading tackler...

Panty,

you want me to believe the Raiders, a team that has not been to the playoffs since 2002, will suddenly turn on a switch, when regular season starts, and play good football.

you want me to believe the Raiders, a team famous for big talk, will suddenly back up their words with action.

i find it hard to believe.

the Raiders are forming a lot of bad, losing habits this pre season. and i'm afraid this will carry over into the real season.

you are right about the division not being so great.
but as Raiders showed last year. winning in afc west, not enough to make playoffs.

and if this Raider squad doesn't get this thing turned around, what have we to look forward to ?

the endless search for more DB's, and a new QB project(Pryor), for years to come. WoW.

But I can't force feed that to you is you don't want to believe...

Why am I expecting a better season than our last???...Take a look at the changes:

Where Did We Get Devalued And Where Did We Get Elevated??

“O”:

“RB”…That’s a gain…“TJ” and we didn’t lose anything..

“WR”…That’s a definite gain with no loss…Moore/Hahen/DHB-Ford Maturing/Chaz Healthy??

“FB”…Same Same…

“TE”…-1 +2 looks very good to me…NO substantial loss and very possible gains…

“OL”…Plus Wiz II/Heyer/Barkdale/Campbell Playing and No losses that we didn’t want to lose…

"QB"...Gains: Terrelle Pryor/Trent Edwards/Matuing in the system for “JC”...Loss: Frye/“SKi”

Looks damn well on the Plus side to me…

“D”:

“DL”…Same Same…

“LB”…Same Same with the maturing of “DeathRo”…

“S”….Possibly Same Same with the maturing of the youngins

“CB”…Plus DVD/CCRaider/Lito Shepard -n- Maturing of rookies minus Namndi….

Can the loss of one player really be that detrimental to the entire team…

Schedule: We play what…4 “PO” teams outside our own division this season…

“GB”
Chicago
“NE”
NYJets

Last season we played what "PO" eams…

AZ
Indy
Baltimore
Cincy

Looks Like Same Same to me!!!

Coaching: This is huge…

Gains:

Hue as “HC”
Bikert on "LB"s
Woodson on "CB"s
Ross on "S"s
Bresnahan as “DC”
Wiz on “OL”
New “OL” coach

Losses:

Cable
MarshMellow

Damn…Is there anyone who doesn’t consider this a move up!!!

Raiders | Terrelle Pryor could play in preseason finale
Thu, 01 Sep 2011 07:21:42 -0700

Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said it's possible that QB Terrelle Pryor will play in the team's preseason finale, but only if he feels as if Pryor is ready. "Do I think he wants to play and compete?" Jackson said. "Yeah, any competitor wants to do that but not at the risk of him not having success or him not being sure or anything like that. I would never want to do that. That could be just as bad as (him) going out and doing something really good."

Raiders | Hue Jackson wants to build a bully
Thu, 01 Sep 2011 07:15:04 -0700

Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said he wants to build his team into bully that physically imposes its will on opponents. "We're going to build it," Jackson said. "Trust me when I tell you. I'm going to build this bully. I know people don't see it yet but that's OK. I am going to build a bully, we're going to be a bully, we have the ingredients to be a bully and I expect this team to be a bully.

Raiders | Hue Jackson addresses defense
Thu, 01 Sep 2011 07:11:13 -0700

Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said he wants to see improvement from his defense; however, at the same time, he won't make a final judgement on the unit until all 11 starters are healthy and on the field together. "This is how I assess our defense," Jackson said. "This is a defense that has not had 11 starters playing together on the field yet. And we still won't. I can't truly say where we are or what we are until we go play a game where all 11 defensive starters are on the football field, playing together, walked out there together and competing together." All 11 starters should be healthy for Week 1.

Bears | Lance Briggs asks for trade
Fri, 02 Sep 2011 06:09:08 -0700

The agent for Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs, Drew Rosenhaus, has filed a formal request to seek a trade on his behalf. “The Bears made their decision, now I have to make mine,” Briggs said. “It’s just how the business works. It’s not going to take away from what I do on the field. I’m 100 percent.” Briggs recently approached the team about a raise, but upper management has not budged.

Patriots | Brandon Meriweather unsure of roster spot

Fri, 02 Sep 2011 05:48:48 -0700

New England Patriots SS Brandon Meriweather said he “didn’t know” his situation after not being used until late in the team’s final preseason game. “I think our coaches do a great job rotating all us in. And playing a lot of guys,” Meriweather said. “Getting a lot of guys a lot of playing time with other people to see how they play together so you know you never know your situation until it’s time.”

I'm not saying they'll stink, but I'm not sensing dominance, either. Right now, I see them possibly improving upon last year. I wouldn't be surprised if they spin their wheels, either. But 12 wins? Alas, I don't think so.

We Just Cut $1.6 Mil Off Our Cap $$$$....Now For What Intended Purpose???

Loper was scheduled to make $1.9 million this season, but he does get to keep a reported $300,000 signing bonus as a parting gift.

Perhaps we can expect Lito Sheppard’s return while Joe Porter goes out the door:

Raiders might want some or all of those players back but only as long as they aren’t on the hook for a sizable chunk of money.
A vested veteran is guaranteed his salary if he is on the roster at the start of the season. The Raiders can work around this loophole by signing them after the season starts.

So perhaps we won't sign any other "FA" until after Thursday...The start of the season???

Let this be documents for the official records:

Falling back into coverage, Branch read the eyes of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and broke perfectly to the pass intended for Golden Tate. He intercepted the pass at the goal line and returned it to the 25-yard line.

"We were in a zone, I got a good read and I just took off," Branch said.

Yes That's Right!!...NO Typo here...We are playing Zone down deep again just like last season...But it worked while last season we gave up way too many scores...

During training camp, cornerbacks coach Rod Woodson said he expected the Raiders to be a "multiple" defense, and the scheme that resulted in the interception against Seattle was one that put Branch in position to make the play.

"He's been an in-the-box safety," free safety Michael Huff said. "We haven't run many (zones), Cover 2s, stuff like that. He's getting more comfortable in those roles, and it will help this defense out."

Pryor's Appeal prosses: The Plot Thickens..."Saction Gate" Is Well Underway!!!

The league was informed of Pryor’s intent to appeal the suspension and related discipline on Aug. 25, and on Aug. 31, the NFL Players Association was invited to lodge its objections to the punishments levied by commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Raiders selected Pryor in the third round of the supplemental draft on August 22 and are in favor of the appeal in hopes of, at the very least, reducing the restrictions on Pryor, according to a league source.

The next step in the process, according to the source, is for Goodell to set a hearing date, though Pryor could pull the plug on the appeal at any time. Pryor has been apprised in the last few days of the status of the appeal, while continuing working with the Raiders.

Pryor’s coach at Ohio State, Jim Tressel, was also set to serve a five-game suspension at the beginning of 2011, before resigning on Memorial Day, which led to Pryor leaving school to pursue an NFL career. Tressel has since been hired by the Colts as a game-day consultant. Tressel and the team released a statement on Monday saying that the coach will sit out the first six weeks of the season.

The position of the veteran players and agents is that the NFL shouldn’t be involved in NCAA punishments in either case

The process of Pryor getting into the supplemental draft was handled over the first two weeks of August, primarily between the quarterback’s camp and the commissioner’s office. The decision to suspend Pryor for five games was Goodell’s, with the player’s right to appeal written into the verdict. Part of the commissioner’s ruling that Pryor’s camp fought hard for was his right to be at his new team’s facility, and participate in meetings — something that was granted.

It's go time for the Raiders. The League's season starts tomorrow, and it starts Monday for the Raiders.
Listen, if we think we are going to slap the Doncos in the buck teeth like we did last year; well, we just may! But I look for some Donco bitterness/stubborness come Monday night. We have got to start the season right with a "W".
Al Davis believes this is a playoff team, Hue Jackson believes the same (of course he does). So I repeat what I have been saying the past 5 seasons, IT'S TIME TO WALK-THE-WALK RAIDERS! I'm tired of hearing the winds of change blowing, while we are still looking for the direction it's coming from. If this is a playoff team that can win this division, then win it!
But some wind blowing concerns me, and this is why I have doubts. The winds are blowing that we can win our division. We soundly beat our Division last season going 6-0; the problem is we went 2-8 against the rest of the league.
I don't want to "win the Division;" I want to dominate the League.
Out of the Raiders' Org is talk of winning the Division and making the playoffs; I'm not content with making the playoffs; I want a Championship! It's time to put up or shut up.

You’re already going to have the Broncos logo as your pic for a week if you lose. I assume that will begin on Tuesday? A week later I’ll have already moved on to our next game and for the following week, I’d be long past the MNF game.

So here’s the deal, either another poster here that contributes all the time can agree to the same bet you offered – so that there are two Bronco fans with Raider logos or else there are two Raider fans with Bronco logos for a week – or the other option is that you agree to change your picture under the terms of this bet for the entire week, including and ending on game day, of our 2nd matchup this season.

Sounds Kool To Me...So Lets Get This Streight...

I loose I have a “Donkey” pic the entire week # 2 and the entire week after our Bye…Week #9 leading up to our 2nd game Sunday 11-6…

10-30 threw 11-6….

But… If I win two “Donkey” posters have the Raider pic the week of 9-12 til Game Time 11-18….Only a 6 day week but I will still take it…

Than we can do it all again week 11-6…

I Accept!!!

Let’s also say that the winner between yours and my bet (since I can’t speak for Bradley) can pick which picture the loser must use. The pic has to be reasonable and in good taste. It can be an in-game photo, a player photo or a logo. But it has to be something real and not like photo shopped or modified or what not.

"Sanction Gate" About To Go Bilistic...Can The "Dictator" Stand Up???

" Explaining Pryor. So why is everyone making such a big deal of the Terrelle Pryor case? It actually is much deeper than this quarterback’s particular case. The bottom line here is that a group of veteran players and agents are concerned, for obvious reasons, about the NFL setting a precedent in which they’re able to enforce punishments over NCAA violations. The really interesting thing is the league’s concern is more about protecting the supplemental draft and not having it become an easy out for college players who change their mind after the January deadline to declare for the draft. Ultimately, the suspension was considered a compromise when it came down, after two weeks of discussions between Pryor’s folks and the commissioner’s office, as a way to allow the player to go pro and the league to prevent sea change in the way the supplemental draft is employed. But the larger issues came to the forefront.
