Now What?

What's one city you rarely hear about as a likely destination for Nnamdi Asomugha? Oakland.

Now why is that? If he's worth that much to so many other teams, isn't he worth equally as much to a team that is supposedly on the cusp? A team that can't afford regression in the secondary at the very point it hopes to become competent against the run?

Just asking.

Another elephant in the room now that the lockout has been lifted is our lack at depth at the most important position in the game: quarterback. It's Jason Campbell, and then a drop off the cliff. And there are some who would argue that Campbell himself isn't that far from the cliff.

With the Raiders, sometimes it feels like trying to enclose a water balloon in your fist. You squeeze the balloon and part of it bulges out of your grasp. Then you grab the bulge, and out comes another part...

In other words, just as we enter a position of strength on one front, we start to weaken or continue to spin wheels on another front.

So this is what I believe we need to win the division and have a fighting chance in the playoffs. Jason Campbell has to have his best year to date in the NFL, and he needs to stay healthy. The offensive line needs to continue to improve. The defense must to figure out how to stop the run. And we can't afford to regress much in the secondary.

If these things happen, then maybe we'll finally have that proverbial water balloon in our full grasp.

Of course, I'd like to see improvement in our wide receiver corps, etc. But I think I our best shot comes down to those four aforementioned elements: QB, offensive line improvement, not being a joke against the run, and not taking a big step back in our secondary.

That's my take. What's yours?

Good points but virtually every NFL team faces those same difficulties with this quick overturning of "FA"s...That's why I wanted that "Right of 1st Refusal" for 6 yr vets...Didn't happen...

#1..."QB"..."JC" has some pluses but not enough to carry this team threw a 16 game season...I expect "VY" to be added to the roster...Also Hue -n- Saunders to have a huge influence with quicker pass plays and timing routs so the protection isn't breaking down too rapidly...Otherwise a heavy dose of the run and dump offs to the "TE"s -n- "RB"s like last season...

#2..."OL"...Very young and very inexperienced...Need as many reps as possible during Preseason...So with the loss of "2-a-Days" I will expect them to take the majority of the snaps to be ready...

#3..."LB"s....This is the pivotal point of our Rush "D" weaknesses...Here I expect Biekert and Bresnahan to weigh in with a great deal of improvement...That and the maturing of "DeathRo"...

#4..."WR"s...They are a little older with 2 quality rookies bringing up the rear...Here again though it depends upon the play at "QB" and the GamePlans...

#5...Schedule...I project 11-n-5...That's winning out again in the AFCW and winning 50% of the games outside the AFCW...

Winning one of these 6...

"NE"
"NYJ"
Miami
Houston
"GB"
Chicago

Winning all the rest...

Buffalo
Cleveland
Detroit
"Minn"

#6...Resign Nam...We have the quality depth behind him...

Throw the 2011 predictions out the window. This year the key will be which organization is the most prepared to handle and overcome all the challenges caused by the lockout.

The teams that are able to adapt and overcome will thrive. Such challenges as free agency, a short ramp-up for rookies to acclimate and getting training clicking on all cylinders will require a decisive plan and leadership. We are less than a few weeks away from our 1st exhibition game and we will need EVERYONE in top shape and on the same page.

This season will be remembered for which organization had their shit together more so than any other season.

Also, according to Yahoo Sports, the Raiders are the most over the cap:

Oakland Raiders: $14.9 million
Dallas Cowboys: $13.9 million
Pittsburgh Steelers: $10.3 million
New York Giants: $6.1 million
Minnesota Vikings: $4.3 million
Indianapolis Colts: $1.8 million
Baltimore Ravens: $1.8 million

Trimming $14.9M AND signing key free agents like TE Miller and CB Asomugha will be very tough.

Sure the Raiders find a way with some trick cap management BUT the reality is that we it is highly unlikely we will be in a position to add key exteranl free agents.

I hate to sound like a broken record but the contracts handed out to Seymour, Routt, and Wimbley seem like BAD business.

10:59 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

"CJ"...

Not to worry so much...Those new contacts can still be renegotiated as more Cap friendly...

Right off the bat you can subtract $6.5 Mil off that over the Cap figure bringing it down to only $8.4 Mil...Than there is that "Dead Money" which hasn't been valuated yet...

Sign Whimbley to a long term deal with a large part of it as Bonus $$$$ spread out over the life of the deal and his $11 Mil Cap figure is greatly diminished...

Cutting "RG" Cooper Carlisle will save another $2.5 Mil...Howard and Brown constitute another $3.5 Mil...Chris Johnson another $2.5 Mil...

Report is Huff counts for $2 Mil and will be gone...

Restructure "DHB"/"D-Mac" saves a bunch...

Than bring in our "FA"s with back loaded contracts -n- large bonus $$$$ so they are very Cap friendly...Than go after a few "FA"s that we want and do the same...

PantyRaider...Al Davis Is A Master "Capologist"!!!/_

By the way...The Raiders will be more on the same page than most teams out there...We could already see that in their off season workout...

Blogger nyraider said...

I like the water balloon analogy. I would say there are other teams gripping brass knuckles... which puts CJ right on par. This will be the season that the most pre-lockout prepared team and the team with the best leadership will likely prevail.

It's hard to imagine losing starters like Miller, Asomugha, Gallery, Huff, etc, will actually improve the Raiders.

The offensive line with be filled with inexperience, yet expected to perform at a higher level than the long-time veterans they replace.

The secondary may take a big hit (pun intended), but only because we can't play zone and nobody on the Raiders can fill Nnamdi's shoes in man coverage.

TE was thin before Miller's potential departure. Without Miller, we're pretty much screwed.

Sure Davis will restructure some contracts and get back under the cap, but will that be enough to re-sign some of our own key players? It all falls back to overpaying so much for guys like Wembley and Routt. Hence, the balloon effect continues.

You're on! Loser leaves Raider Take for one year.

Davis must sign more than one top tier FA who was not on the Raiders roster last season (after all, one FA doesn't exactly constitute a "splash") and those FA players must have been quality full-time starters on other teams last year, consistent with the quality of players in your list above. I will even include Pryor, even though he is not a FA.

Are you ready to man up? And will Raider Take agree to help enforce the results (by deleting takes from the loser)?

Interesting exchange from Cable's Q&A.

Q: Is Jacoby currently a starter?

Cable: Based on our health at that position, yes.

Q: So you expect him to be out there this week, or do you have to wait until the corpse wakes up and tells you what to do?

You think he/she means Al Davis?

5:28 PM

nyraider said...

PR - don't get your panties in a bunch over the Q&A I posted. I don't condone it. If that’s a jab at Al Davis it is disrespectful beyond belief. I’m surprised Herrera wasn't there to flex his paper muscles and escort that person out of the PC.

And how does the fact that any of us have or have not played competitive sports have any bearing on why the Raiders can't figure out how to be competitive?

Suddenly you're more qualified to judge WRs because you played pop warner football and have a booster club membership card? Don't you realize how ridiculous that is?

4:53 AM

nyraider said...

As for the Q&A, I was genuinely shocked by the statement. That's why (and the only reason) I posted it. In the few years I've been here at RT, I have never dissed the man in that way, and don’t expect others to, especially professional media. That’s totally uncalled for and, as I said, unprofessional. I remain a fan of Al Davis, despite that I disagree with the way he runs the team. Whether you chose to believe that or not really makes no difference to me. It’s a fact.

3:21 PM

nyraider said...

Ok, something very strange happened.

The Q&A I posted this morning was verbatim from J-Mac’s blog. I went back to it and found the content in question had been removed. I then searched the web for another transcript and found the same language as now posted on J-Mac’s site.

I assure you, this is not a hoax, at least not by me.

The perpetrator is either the author of the Q&A section I read this morning or it was removed (A) because it was distasteful and classless, or (B) to protect the media individual who made the comment.

I would like to email J-Mac and ask, but I am unable to find his email address (which is no surprise considering all the nuts he would hear from, today me being one).

I have no answer. If you want to believe I made it up, I have no proof that I didn’t. However, I assure you I did not. As I said, I posted it verbatim, in pure shock that it was said. I have stood behind every post I've ever made on this site. I have no problem accepting what is fact and acknowledging when I'm wrong.

However, this is pure mystery. Perhaps it will surface again in some fashion. Hard to believe that could get put out there then removed without a trace.

We are inches away from football season again!

We now have a clearer picture of what the new C.B.A. will be and it looks good for the Raiders. The Raiders will actually be in the running for Nnamdi Asomugha because "dead money" won't count toward the salary cap.

On NFL Network, Jason LaCanfora said, "Teams will have to spend at least 90 percent of the cap in cash and won't be able to play with dead money as they have in the past."

So that leaves the Raiders at $103.2 million in players' salaries as of now.

The salary cap is set at $120 million with a $3 million exemption to sign one player. But to bring back Asomugha, there will still have to be some cuts to make room to bring in additional help.

Denver Broncos Won't Count "Dead Money" Towards 2011 Salary Cap Figure

Article 11 of the new CBA contains the rules that will allow the league to transition into the new league year, and buried among the many items within it is the following subsection:

Section 5. Salaries and Salary Cap Accounting:

....(b) Proration From Preexisting Contracts. ....(i) No signing bonus proration to the League Years of this Agreement shall apply for any Preexisting Contract that was terminated, traded or assigned via waivers prior to March 11, 2011....

What this means for Denver is that the proration cap penalty of Jamal Williams, Justin Bannan, and Daniel Graham, who were all cut on March 3rd will not apply.

This frees up $11.676million to be used immediately in free agency, though the approximate cap hit of $900,000 for Correll Buckhalter will still apply

Oakland Raiders "Unofficially" Agree To Terms With UDFA Ben Lamaak, C, Iowa State

Ben Lamaak (C/G, Iowa State)

Lamaak's played all over the line in his four years, after being recruited as a tight end and quarterback. Clearly he doesn't lack versatility or athleticism for a big boy (6'4" and 318), although he's not going to play tackle in the NFL. A hard working, blue-collar sort who's proved himself as a pass blocker in the Cyclones' spread offense, although his run blocking needs to get better. Are you so ignorant that you would put JARVIS FREAKIN MOSS in that category? Big name player to most logical, reasonable football fans is someone who is (a) external plus (b) a proven player and (c) a legit Tier 1 free agent.

To suggest that a clown like Jarvis Moss, who ISN'T even a starter meets the criteria is complete lunacy.

Free Agency 2011 – Getting Gaither

I personally feel as good a left tackle as he was in 2010, he has it in him to be an All-Pro right tackle.

Never forget

Because the Ravens were planning on switching Michael Oher to the left side before even knowing Gaither would miss 2010 with an injury, some people don’t recognize how good the former supplemental draft pick has been. Stats don’t always tell the story, but Gaither had given up six sacks, five hits and 28 hurries in 32 games (including playoffs). Compare that to Pro Bowl tackle Donald Penn, who gave up six sacks, nine hits and 36 hits in just 16 starts of 2010! So, if you think Penn is a franchise LT, what do you think of Gaither?
.
Now there are other things to consider. Gaither has given up an extremely largely number of penalties (averaging 10 per regular season). That’s a concern, but given his performance in keeping Joe Flacco upright, and his run blocking (he ranked in our top three run blocking LTs in 2008 and 2009) it’s clear he’s a franchise left tackle.

Jared Gaither | Tackle
Team: Baltimore Ravens
Ht / Wt: 6'9' / 340
Age / DOB: (25) / 3/18/1986

The Raiders have begun negotiations with free agent OT Jared Gaither, according to NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora.

The Raiders would have the tallest bookends in the league if they ended up pairing 6'9" Gaither with 6'9" second-year tackle Jered Veldheer. Coach Hue Jackson is making an effort to change the culture in Oakland. Gaither comes with attitude question marks, though, after a falling out with the Ravens coaching staff. Jul 26, 11:57 PM

What a tool!

The challenge didn't say "ANY" free agent, and it certainly didn't include players that were on the Raiders roster last season.

You started the FA list, and I even included Pryor.

In typical cowardly PR fashion, you're going to wait to see if we sign the FAs you need to win before you officially (in writing) accept the challenge. Otherwise, if we don't sign the players, you will just say you never accepted.

Either way, you will judge yourself the winner.

Step up and be judged by someone else, i.e., other than that clouded and delusional mind of yours.

You have identified Calico Jack as the voice of reason at RT many times. Allow CJ to judge this contest.

The challenge is still on the table but you have to accept it (which you have yet to do) in an official and timely manner - before news of more FA signings occur today - and agree to allow a third party judge.

All that's happening now is that you are running a muck with some half-assed notion that ANY FA signing was part of this arrangement, after which you will be clamoring for my removal.

Be a man! For once!

Do you accept the challenge and do you agree to leave Raider Take for one year if you lose?

Say it now (make it the first thing you post, not later today or tomorrow) or this contest is a sham.

Did it ever cross your mind that you get out exactly what you put in (thus, what you ask for)?

Perhaps when you start treating people with respect you will have earned it for yourself.

You're like a little kid. You have made it your mission to constantly call people out for their opinions, and use insults and profanity as tools for your diatribe.

I’ve tried (years) to ignore it and even post around it, but you have gone so far out of your way to control this board to a point where nobody’s opinion is valid unless you share the same opinion.

I don’t post on other sites as you claim to. I found this site several years ago and gravitated to it because I found that I shared many of the same views as Raider Take and several of the folks who comment here. Of course, not everyone shared all the same viewpoints but that's what made the site interesting.

As I know you don't share many of RT's viewpoints regarding the Raiders, your connection to this site appears to be your need for confrontation, just as you feel the need to post on Broncos and Chiefs blogs, etc.

I do recall a sense of community and deep respect for others when I began posting here. I believe as the Raiders failures grew, many fans became more and more disenchanted with how things were run in Oakland. As this sentiment grew, so did your attack on this board.

Now, you seem to gravitate to it to feed your desire for confrontation. For me, and many others I’m sure, you have taken the fun out of posting here.

Fortunately (for both of us and this community), this will all be over shortly. I fully intend to honor my end of this arrangement, and I hope you do too.

By the way, there is a timetable for this contest (there has to be). It makes sense that this contest will end with the establishment of a 53-man roster and/or the start of the season.

Good luck!

PR,
As usual, you completely missed the point that I was trying to make. Let me repeat it:

My view on blogs and forums ... get what you want out of it and use your free will to determine what to read and how engaged you want to be.

Here is a very simple example;

If NYR writes "the sky is purple", I have 3 choices;

(1) skim over it
(2) read it
(3) offer an opinion (ie. "Sorry, NYR, I disagree. The sky is blue")

Whether I offer an opinion on any specific comment or subject matter is completely up to me.

Second, the only reason you have not attacked my family or person (outside of your constant insults and profanity aimed directly at me) is because I don't make that information available to you.

And the only time I attacked you in this regard was when you wouldn't lay off the bizarre mystery quote I posted regarding Davis. You have now re-posted that entire exchange about four times since last year.

NFL | Vince Young needs to clear waivers

Before any teams can contact released QB Vince Young (Titans), he needs to make his way through the league's waiver process. That should happen around 4 p.m. ET Friday, July 29.

Meanwhile across the Bay...

49ers | Frank Gore holdout begins

The holdout of San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore began Thursday, July 28, when he didn't report to the team for their first day of training camp. Gore is looking for the 49ers to give him a new contract.

49ers | Michael Crabtree being placed on active PUP

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (foot) will be placed on the team's active physically-unable-to-perform list. If he is not able to pass a physical before the start of the season, he would move to the reserve PUP and miss the first six weeks of the season. This will be the third consecutive season Crabtree has missed the start of training camp with the team.

Further proof that the Pats and Raiders are exact opposites.

Pats are acquiring Haynesworth for a 5th round pick. They acquired Moss from us for a 4th rounder.

We paid them a 1st round pick+ for Seymour (Yeah. I'd rather have Seymour too).

We paid a 1st rounder and a starting LB for Moss. Pats took him off our hands for a 4th round pick (which we wasted on a speedy CB).

Plus, the Pats seem to get the best out of their players, e.g., Moss, while we seem to bring out the worst is some players, e.g., Moss (this list is big).

While we trade away our draft picks, the Pats always seem to be accumulating draft picks.

They have had a franchise QB in place for well over a decade, while we have been searching for a starting QB for about a decade.

I wouldn't say these are two teams going in opposite directions, but clearly there is a more efficient and more successful model right in front of us... although, the Raiders would never admit it.

Eagles technically jumped the gun on Vince Young
Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2011, 9:52 AM EDT

Said NFL spokesman Michael Signora, “Until a player appears on the transaction report, then any transaction is not official, including if the move has been discussed publicly, etc. So if a player is still a member of a club’s active roster — as Young is in this case — no other team can talk to him until he appears on that transaction report.”

Still, the Eagles technically should not have contacted Young until he appeared on the daily transaction report issued by the league office. Since Young was cut after 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, he won’t appear on the report until Friday.

Apparently, Campbell prefers to stand on the cliff by himself (provided he has McFadden and Bush to hold him up). The first sign of competition makes him jump off that cliff. Some guys thrive on competition; others fold at the thought of it.

That observation aside, I think Campbell will improve with his second season, but not without some rough patches that characterized his season last year.

No question, there is no contingency plan... something the Raiders are short of on many levels.

We've got Jason Campbell, who got benched and dinged up last year, behind a young, unproven offensive line...and behind him is a cliff at the QB position.

So we signed a marginal CB for $10.5M per year, and allowed the best CB in the league to walk for $12M a year? Relatively speaking Routt received the better of the two guarantees.

I hope the Raiders get a little pep in their step on the free agency and trading front.

Gradkowski to Boller as the backup QB, and Asomugha to Routt as the #1 CB, are both steps backward.

Of course, we can expect to take some steps forward this year, starting at the head coach position, and hopefully with our new draft picks and continued maturity at WR, etc.

But I'd like to sense a little more urgency and see a little more action. I don't like our QB situation, and our CB situation just took a big hit.

"cause and effect" or what I've been saying since February with the signings of Seymour, Wimbley, Routt, and Henderson ... there are consequences for when we over-spend. I can see the justification of locking down Seymour at a generous compensation but the other 3 were clearly over-paid WAY beyond market value. I don't care what cap magic is performed to salvage Miller ... the over-spending for Routt, Wimbley, and Henderson (and SeaBass and Lechler) put us in this cap crunch. Because of the shortened window of FA, we lost Nnamdi.

Here's a simple question to put this in perspective:

Who would you rather see lined up on Sunday? Wimbley or Asougha? We paid Wimbley about 500k less than Asoumugha got with the Eagles.

"What we’ll do is we’ll make that decision after we find out if we are going to sign him, first," Jackson said. "Then, two, we’ll put the best five linemen out there and put them wherever we need to put them. Obviously, I’ve been around Jared and know exactly what he is and if he is a part of our team, we’re going to play him wherever we think he will best fit for us."

One thing is for certain: Jackson thinks rather highly of Gaither from the time they spent together with the Ravens.

"He’s a tremendous player," Jackson said. "When he’s healthy, he’s one of the better left tackles in the league. He has extremely long arms, very tall, very long. He’s a good football player. Again, there’s a question of health, and we’re going to do everything that we need to do to make sure that we know exactly where he is."

"He is a good player," Wimbley said. "He is a physical player, has great feet and he can help this team out if he comes here. He has ability, and he has the tools to make it touch on his opponents. When you are trying to rush, his long arms definitely create space. He has the ability to reset and things like that. Quick hands, quick feet, strong guy. Those are the things you look for in an offensive tackle."

It's one thing to approach FA cautiously, it's another to let your best player walk when his price was reasonable. Looks like the spending spree prior to the lockout has taken its toll.

And while I can't fault the Raiders for wanting to look at Gaither (based on their options at tackle), I can't help but be concerned Gaither is just another Barry Sims, Kwame Harris, Khalif Barnes or Langston Walker. None of these guys came even close to meeting expectations.

Gaither had issues playing in Baltimore. He has only played in 33 games (about two seasons worth), and he lost his starting job to Michael Oher (who I wish we drafted instead of DHB) before having serious back injury that forced him out all of last year.

His measurements are good. Let’s hope his health, attitude and talent match those measurements.

However, at $12M a season, Asomugha should have been the top priority all along. Instead, we franchised Wimbley for $11.5M (he made like $800k last season) .

The more I look the more I like this signing...

Quarterback Trent Edwards also showed up to watch practice, only hours after signing a contract. He picked the Raiders on the recommendation of former Raiders passing game coordinator Ted Tollner.

Coincidentally, the Raiders coveted Edwards in 2007 out of Stanford. Instead, the Raiders used the No. 1 pick on quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Edwards was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.

“I just remember visiting with coach Knapp (Greg, offensive coordinator) when he was here, and they were interested,” Edwards said. “I felt like I had a good chance coming here and now I didn’t, obviously, and now I’m back and excited to be here.”

So as I suspected we are targeting Vets who the Raiders/Davis/Coaches are very familiar with and doing so slowly not in a Frenzy...

Meanwhile we continue to free up Cap space for something so stay tuned...It ain't over yet...

Here's how PFT describes Asomugha in their top 80 FA list:

"1. Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders CB: A Hall of Fame player still in his prime. Rare. (UPDATE: Signed with Eagles.)"

I understand the Raiders not franchising him (again), but I can't understand them letting him get away for a $12M annual salary.

Meanwhile, Sam Williams was signed (for much less than Nnamdi). Williams is in his 9th season with the Raiders and, IMO, is a symbol of everything that has gone wrong since the SB against TB.

There is still time to cut him before the season.

Below is the URL for a regularly updated list of PFT's top 80 free agents. The talent pool is thinning out rapidly. Miller and Huff are on the list, and I'd like to see both back in Oakland.

Like him or not, Michael Huff is a talented, cerebral player that has been asked to play the hardest position in the NFL (FS for the Raiders). He stepped up his game last season when he was allowed to play closer to the LOS and sometimes blitz. Of course, Bresnahan will probably not have the kind of latitude that Marshall claimed.

As far as bringing Huff back, I'm fine with it. He has a very difficult job as FS and last year he had one of his more consistent season performance-wise.

Jets, Raiders in pursuit of CB Cromartie

The Raiders and Jets continue to negotiate with CB Antonio Cromartie, according to a league source.

A third team could be involved as well, but the Jets and Raiders have displayed the most interest.

Cromartie is back on the Jets’ radar after their failed pursuit of ex-Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who agreed to sign with the Eagles on Friday.

Cromartie recorded 42 tackles and three interceptions in 15 starts for the Jets last season.

That will definitely be a top tier player if we get him...But this shows the Raiders are indeed players in "FA" this season win lose or draw!!!...

Glad we kept Huff. He's proven to be capable. Don't think we can underestimate the importance of keeping Zach Miller, our receptions leader.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten, the team’s player rep, said the league year may be pushed back from Thursday, Aug. 4, to the following Monday or Tuesday. The NFL and NFL Players Association have details that need to be worked out. If the league year is pushed back, the new CBA rules would prevent players who were unsigned before training camp to participate in practice until the new league year begins.

The SCHEME (LOL) of press coverage, man to man, beat the guy in front of you is what the Raiders have done since Al took over the team back in the 60's.

Yes the FORMATIONS have changed somewhat depending on who the personel is, but the SCHEME has always been the same. Routt is just another to let the cat out of the bag and history shows that he won't be around much longer. Al will take this as a stab in the back after Al has made him the #1 corner on the roster, should be interesting to watch.

Definition: "DB" Coverages

Defensive backs normally line up in two types of coverage. The first coverage is press. And in press coverage, the defensive back is usually within two yards of the wide receiver at the line of scrimmage. Most defensive backs will play bump and run coverage in this style.

The other formation for defensive backs is with cushion. When a defensive back gives a wide receiver cushion, he is usually five, ten and sometimes maybe even 15 yards back off the wide receiver.

What's the rest of the story? Take the needle and mask the pain but risk further injury?

Asomugha won or was nominated for numerous humanitarian awards, won team MVP honors, was voted to 4 straight pro bowls and is arguably the best CB in football (in M2M coverage).

Has it become the Raiders MO to smear a guy as he's walking out the door? When they dump a player it's a business decision, but when a player leaves it becomes personal to the Raiders.

Didn’t Davis get up on a podium several months ago and tell the world he wouldn’t re-sign Asomugha if he could add 2-3 players for the equivalent salary? Turns out, he was only able to sign Wimbley for that amount. So Davis chose Wimbley over Asomugha. Now he’s pissed?

A bizarre turn of events for a team that covets CBs.

My guess is they will now overpay Cromartie.

Not sure I understand the re-post above. Are you prepared to leave like a man? There are very few top tier FAs left and even fewer would fit into the Raiders plans.

The Raiders have their roster pretty much set and, yes, I would agree that their plan has been in place for months. You emphasizing it only makes your challenge look more foolish.

The Raiders clearly planned months ago to send Gallery packing and allow Nnamdi to walk. They had no intention of re-signing Gradkowski (to protect Campbell's ego) and JLH was no big loss.

They eyed Cromartie for about 30 seconds on the fly, but the Jets had no choice but re-sign him.

Clearly, the Raiders plan to stick with their youth movement. No veteran FA need apply.

As I understand it from reading the original posts;

NYR would exit RT for a year if the Raiders signed more than 1 "big name, tier 1" external FA who are legit. starters.

If the Raiders sign 1 or 0 "big name" tier 1 external FAs starters, PR would walk.

As an outsider to this challenge, my view is that PR talked tough:

"Doubt your man enough to "Put Up Or Shut Up" but I will wager that Mr Davis makes a splash in "FA" this season...."

NYR met him head on:

"You're on! Loser leaves Raider Take for one year. Davis must sign more than one top tier FA who was not on the Raiders roster last season"

And since that time, PR has weaseled, delayed, and attempted to fillerbuster out of the bet. Sad.

If the Raiders were even partly serious about signing a FA O-lineman they would have ignored Gaither and took a flyer on Charlie Johnson, who the Vikes just wrestled away from the Colts. He can play tackle (was a left tackle for Manning) or guard on both sides of the line.

This guy could have filled whatever hole the Raiders have (or end up with). That's the ultimate insurance policy for a team that has so little direction on their O-line at this point.

As for Seattle middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, he’s reportedly on his way to Washington, D.C. to visit the Redskins after talking with the Raiders.

Jackson made it clear McClain is the Raiders’ middle linebacker and hinted Tatupu would have to move if he came here. Given that Tatupu has been an every down linebacker who wouldn’t take a pay cut from $4 million, it’s hard to imagine him coming here to be a player who leaves during nickel and dime defenses and a moderate salary.

“The new contract has to be earned, so I definitely look forward to the opportunity to go out and playing and earning every bit of the contract,” Wimbley said

In the process, the Raiders were able to lessen the cap liability for 2011, which gives them more room to sign players such as tight end Zach Miller and other free agents.

Now lookie here...Go argue with the "HC" if you don't like's it...

“Kamerion Wimbley, new Raider, free agency,” Jackson said. “It’s one of our signings. Write that down everybody. No, that’s what it is. … Again, it’s just our organization continuing to lock up a good young talent. Kamerion Wimbley, what a terrific few days of practice he was having and then, all of a sudden, we got the deal done. Now, all of a sudden, he’s a free agent. But he’s here. He’s ours.”

So according to "Hue that now constitutes "One New FA LB"...His is a "NEW" contract NOT a re-sign because that attempt was already voided by the NFL...

– How’s this for an economic boon?

The Raiders invoked a $3.5 million buyback to $635,000 in salary to retain Wimbley in February, meaning he was set to make $4.135 million.

Except an obscure "30 percent rule" for players in the final year of their contracts voided the deal. Wimbley made $2.1 million, meaning his salary would have almost doubled.

To avoid losing him, the Raiders made him an exclusive franchise free agent _ for a one-year salary of $11.3 million. That’s right _ it’s illegal to raise his salary to $4.135 million but perfectly legal to make it $11.3, because the latter was a new contract.

And now Wimbley is making a reported $29 million guaranteed.

NO!...Please!!!...But if it should happen I will surely take it...

Either way I will NOT be reading 2 pitiful "Criers" and perhaps many more this season and into the next...Just remembering how much happier I was when I Self Deleted and left for more than a season before returning a year ago March just to see my name was still being tarnished by the type of "Scum" that frequents here...Even after more than as season away the 1st thing to greet me was this fuckin shit without a single word of disgust from any one of you posters as you no doubt condone such rude and insidious racist conduct towards poster's families...Only this was posted from "RT":

Well, I will never know for sure if you wife is black. Post a picture of her, so we know you aren't lying... Pantyraider used to write that he had a 15 yr old asian as his wife, was I supposed to believe that too?

If you do post a pic it better not be a picture off an Aunt Jemima box either...cause I have eaten plenty of those pancakes and I know what she looks like.

Does your wife know you talk about poor southern boys like that Balanda? She would be offended, I'm sure.

Wow! And to think the Browns couldn't get rid of Wimbley fast enough. In one year with the Raiders, he played well for his $675,000 salary then ended up inking a 5-year deal worth almost $50M.

This is another one of those Al Davis contracts that just pisses off the rest of the NFL. Now every decent LB in the league will want "Wimbley money."

Here's the link again for the now updated PFT list of FAs. 75% are signed.

Two TEs remain on the list, and the Raiders really need to sign one of them. No Raiders WR has stepped up to Miller's level of production.

Now this is my understanding of how/when this will take place: Someone have a better understanding that step up...
----------------------------------
Article 11 of the new CBA contains the rules that will allow the league to transition into the new league year, and buried among the many items within it is the following subsection:

-----------------------------------

Nam's contact was voided as of March 4th so will apply...

The new league year takes effect Thursday the 4th of August and the new CBA takes effect at that time also...Therefor at that same time the Raiders will be relieved of some huge $$$$ that was "Dead $$$$ Money" counting against the Cap...

The Raiders have been relatively quiet so far saying they are waiting to free up Cap space...The "Dead Money" was believed to be $17 Mil...Than we get to add in the $3.5 Mil incentive and additional $3 Mil that can be borrowed from future years...All of which should take effect on Thursday as well...

Now that could be as much as $23.5 Mil added to the Raiders Cap Fund...

Than significant Cap space was freed up when Wimbley signed his "New" contract...How much is yet unreported but believed to be as much as $10 Mil which could than bring that figure to a high point of some $33.5 Mil.... The question is at this very late point in "FA" who the hell can we spend all that $$$$ on...

A List Of Probable Possibilities:

16. Matt Roth, Browns LB: A complete outside linebacker that still hasn’t uncorked his pass-rushing potential.

24. Kevin Boss, Giants TE: The poor man’s Zach Miller. He’s easily better than half the starters in the league because of his complete game.

28. Steve Smith, Giants WR: Like Kiwanuka, he’d be far higher (top 10) if not for any injury. A worthwhile risk because he should be great in 2012 and beyond.

43. Dashon Goldson, 49ers S

48. Malcom Floyd, Chargers WR

61. Kirk Morrison, Jaguars LB

65. Bo Scaife, Titans TE

This may sound far out there.

But i'm hoping Raiders will make a play for WR Braylon Edwards.

Edwards would fit in well with Raiders.

And even if it means waiving goodbye to, "hands of stone", DHB, to clear money.

Blogger nyraider said...

Edwards may be facing suspension from the NFL for violation of his parole in a recent bar incident.

I've been lobbying for two years for a proven veteran wide receiver to shore up the ranks. I still am.

It would be nice to get one without Edwards' baggage, but we seem to be flat-footed on this front once again. DHB is already hurt again. Now Ford is hurt.

This is what makes the Miller signing so crucial.

Bye bye Sidney Rice, Plaxico, James Jones, Santonio Holmes. Steve Smith is still available, right?

NYraider,

Edwards may get suspended for 3 or 4 games. Who knows ?

Shillins will probably miss at least 10 games with injuries. and as RT points out, Ford already is hurt.

So Edwards would be a worthwhile risk, and looming Suspension could bring his price down.

If true that Miller is gone, Raiders need someone to catch the ball.

incredible. we lost miller! damn!

this kind of SUCKS because didn't the team have some kind of verbal "gentlemen's aggreement" for him to just freakin be patient while they work some things out (ie create some cap space) so they could get him signed? this sucks man. now we don't have an experienced tight end, unless davis sees otherwise.

is it david ausberry's time?

Free-agent S Dashon Goldson (49ers) did not sound happy the San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent S Madieu Williams. Goldson said he is going to keep an open mind regarding free agency and wouldn't mind taking his services to another team, possibly the Dallas Cowboys. Entering the free-agent signing period, Goldson was believed to be a priority re-signing for the 49ers.

Oakland Raiders 2011 Free Agents: OT Stephon Heyer Says He is a Raider

According to Vittorio Tafur former Redskin offensive tackle Stephon Heyer has posted on his facebook page that he has signed with the Oakland Raiders. Heyer is 27. He has plenty of starting experience and bulk.

Stephon Heyer has started 33 games in his four year career and brings experience, toughness and attitude to the offensive line. He is big physical tackle with limited athleticism. He wins with effort, technique and power when he is able to engage early in the play. Heyer lacks great lateral agility and balance which hinders his ability on backside blocks and on the second level. He understands angles and ability to leverage defenders at the point of attack. Heyer has improved his hand use and can adjust to twists and counters when out of position. With a high profile draft pick at his position, Stephon Heyer may be relegated to a backup role but will provide excellent depth along the offensive line.

Miller and the 6-6, 253-pound Boss were considered the best tight ends in a weak market. Boss caught 35 passes for 531 yards and five touchdowns last year.
