A Take on Taiwan

Much angst has been expressed in these parts over the past few days about Taiwan Jones not getting serious action on Sunday, and what it says about Jones, or about the coaching staff, given that we were razor-thin at the running back position.

Here's my take: I suspect it's something as simple as Taiwan pissing off the staff or breaking a rule or not giving full effort.

If that's the case, I support keeping Taiwan on ice. We've seen where lack of discipline and accountability has led this organization in the past.

Cream rises to the top in the NFL, and Taiwan hasn't risen even close to the top under two coaches now. He's nothing more than an idea from Eastern Washington with less than 20 combined season carries under his belt. It seems to me that, as Raiders fans, we're always hoping for the next "idea" to save the day, when in reality they're just guys who are low on a mediocre depth chart.

Jeff Fisher benched two starters last Sunday for team rules violations. They were seen running the stairs before the game. The Rams proceeded to give one of the best teams in the NFL a run for their money. That's how good coaches operate. Accountability first.

Anyhow, the Taiwan Jones issue is ultimately an act of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Look at our defense. Look at the combined point totals given up over the past two weeks. No offense can overcome that.

Honestly, I think Allen and McKenzie thought it was going to be easier than this, that maybe they had some good raw material to work with. I think this has been a rude awakening for all involved. I think we're going to see a nuking after this season, and it won't be the players pressing the button.

I'm not saying what's left will be better. McKenzie and Allen still have to prove themselves. But it's going to be a lot different. Mark my words.

"Mark my words" is that a pun?

Yes, maybe we are getting down to the 'core' of the problem. The Raider way of past years was to always blame the coaching. We would always hear "they have a lot of talent on that team", when in fact, it was an illusion.

Meanwhile, quitters and suspect players were drooled over as 'big time' players. They never were, they would all drift into the 'afterlife' of the NFL. Coaches would get fired and go on to better things, while the players got a pass and given more money even in recording record breaking losing. We see the same mistakes, lack of focus etc ...and still they blame the coaches and cry "we have the talent, they went 8-8".

My expectation is that we will see continual minor tweaks to player reps., the system and schemes throughout 2012.

The players worth keeping around in 2013 will be the ones who rise to the ocassion, demonstrate accountability on the practice field, on game day, and off the fielld, and ultimately perform to a certain measurable standard.

When the 2013 off-season rolls around, we can expect major wholesale changes to the personnel.

I don't think McKenzie will spend cap dollars like a drunken sailor to shrink the talent gap.

Conversely, I see the 2013, 2014 roster filled with young, hungry, football players with high football IQ and acumen.

Character, accountability, football passion and desire will trump 40 times and combine scores.

In hindsight, the true new era starts when McKenzie/Allen are able to build the team in their vision.

If T. Jones is being benched for breaking rules, don't you think the coaching staff should say this?

If true, I'd agree with you RT... there needs to be discipline above all else.

But TJ seems to be completely surprised to find out ANY reason for his lack of playing time.. he might have found it out through the PRESS.

And a lot of guys follow and respect Cork's views on football... and he has been raving about TJ since the time he set foot on the practice field.

He said this guy is SPECIAL.

We watch Stewart instead.

Great... no problem here...

These are things that drove you guys CRAZY when Al was running the show... now... never mind. All is good.

I'd rather see progress on the field first... lets start by not losing to NO's by more than 50 points.

I'll preface this as being for discussion purposes (and hope my takes don't continue to get spun into "I think the coaches should all be fired")

Without speculating what Tiawan Jones might have done to piss off the coaches, Allen stated the reason for his lack of playing time was due to injury and ball security.

Injury is a non-issue, so that leaves ball security. I think we can agree when down by 30+ pts, the threat of fumbling isn't really a factor.

Here's Steve Corkran's take from his blog discussion. Unlike us, Corkran has seen Jones run.

You mean Taiwan Jones? Yes, he needs to play and play a lot so that they can make an informed decision on whether to retain him beyond this season.

Sounds reasonable to me, and pretty much mirrors the sentiment of every other beat writer who has had enough access to render an informed opinion.

I recall in the opener vs SD, Raiders ran a reverse. Ball got pitched to Taiwan, he lost focus, ball bounced off his facemask, rolled away. lost a lot of yards.

ever since, Taiwan's been in the doghouse. It's up to Taiwan to get himself out of it.

RT, there is no way Reggie and DA thought this was going to be easy.

These are good football men. No way they looked at film of 2011, and thought, hey, we've got a lot to work with here. Just the opposite.

In reality, Reggie wanted to nuke this roster from day one. But how ?

No picks, no cap space. We all know the story.

It's going to take 2 yrs at least. Nothing we can do but wait.

In 2 yrs, Raiders will have an entire new defense. I am counting the days.

– Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp reiterated what Allen has said, that second-year running back Taiwan Jones still has to earn the trust of the coaches before he gets more action in games.
The issues that remain, Knapp said, are Jones’ ball security and blocking assignments. Once Jones gets those down in practice, he will get more of an opportunity to show what he can do in games.
“I’ve got to see ‘em in practice first, consistently,” Knapp said. “And I haven’t seen it consistently in practice, and that’s what we look for, is perfection in practice.”
Knapp said he and Allen can tell whether Jones is ready by watching him in practice, there isn’t the need to see him in a game to make that determination. Jones still isn’t hanging on to the ball as well as the coaches would like.
“Sometimes it’s handoffs and sometimes it’s been on contact,” Knapp said of Jones’ struggles.

What a load of crap. What does ball control and blocking have to do when you desperately need points down by over 20 points?

And if perfection is desired in practice... what about Adams fumbling problems fielding punts DURING GAMES??? THE DUDE CANNOT HOLD ON TO THE BALL. Does this mean he is perfect in practice, thus he keeps his starting job??

Blocking assignments and ball security sound like valid reasons to keep any player out of the lineup. But in Week 11 of the season, with McFadden and Goodson out? This kid must really suck!

In the end, we all know why Jones was on the Raiders last year. Al Davis loves speed. He flashed in training camp and preseason (last year), so much so that the media were collectively drooling over the kid.

At the end of the day, he might not have the football acumen to get it done. Who knows. I still would like to see him play this week.

Btw, in terms of risking injury to Carson Palmer with Jones playing, the Raiders run plenty of empty backfield sets in their one-dimensional offense, so that was a lame excuse.

Another classic, Gary, you are on a roll.

How do you use him to score points? Just give him the ball, and yell "Run Forrest, run" ? Hey man, if a HB can't pick up a blitz, you aren't going to score. You will get your QB mushed and the Raider QB is the only part of this team that is worth protecting. QB get's hurt, then you really aren't scoring points.

If a guy fumbles, the other team scores points. Talk about amateur hour, do you guys know anything about the game? Have you ever played competitive sports? If the other team knows he can't pick up a blitz, they will come with clear shots on the QB. If they know he is a fumbler, they target the ball and it comes out real easy.

Nothing messes up an Offense more than a guy who doesn't know the basics and is screwing up in his assignments. Can we please change the subject? This JONES stuff is getting way passed absurd.

.."in terms of risking injury to Carson Palmer with Jones playing, the Raiders run plenty of empty backfield sets in their one-dimensional offense, so that was a lame excuse."....

When in an empty backfield, the QB has hot routes in case they are coming with the blitz. If the Rec doesn't read the blitz and give his QB a quick target, then that is on the Rec. and the QB has to take a sack or throw it away. If the RB is staying in for extra protection because they read a blitz, that RB better know who it is he has coming through or else the QB is going to get drilled. I am pretty sure the coaches don't want to see Palmer getting drilled, so JONES stands on the sidelines.

Can't pass with the QB on the ground and you can't run if the ball is coming out. So no, it is not "lame" at all. It's accountability, own your assignments, learn the basics or you don't play....it's that way from Pop warner to the pro's.

Gary, for a RB, ball control and blocking are critical facets that should never be discounted and shoved under the carpet.

You can keep saying it doesn't matter because of the scoreboard all you want.

Bottom Line though is Jones will have to earn his reps. just like any NFL player. No charity or "scholarship" reps. are required to "evaluate" him. When he shows that he can handle these 2 facets during the week of practice, then he will be ready to earn the trust of the team on game day.

I softened my position a little after listening to the coaches, but Gary’s right. A legit excuse has yet to be presented.

Jones said: "if a HB can't pick up a blitz, you aren't going to score."

This line of thinking is the same as suggesting we keep DHB on the field as our #1 WR because he's such a good blocker... something folks used to actually say.

Teams don’t usually blitz on 1st and 2nd downs. Besides, teams might think twice about blitzing when Tiawan Jones is in because of his quickness and speed. So until he screws up (which he hasn’t been given a chance to do), teams will have to respect him.

The simple truth is, Jones is on the 53-man roster; it’s week 10 of the regular season; our top RB and our backup RB are out with injuries and the only other backup HB we have is a scout team player; our record is 3-6; and we’re coming off the worst back-to-back beat downs in the Raiders long and storied NFL history.

WTF is the discussion? Put him in the game.

That's a powerful argument. So I guess when you can no longer make a football point you resort to insults.

As I stated, teams typically don’t blitz on 1st and 2nd downs. Do you disagree with that point?

You stated Jones should be held out, in part, due to his lack of blocking ability.

Jones plays a skill position. His blocking ability is a non-factor in many plays the Raiders could run with him in the game. Besides, last I checked, Reece is still available at FB and can play with Jones in a two-back set.

Curiously, Brandon Myers has been criticized by the media and in Raider forums for his lack of blocking ability, but the Raiders have no problem leaving him in the game (and rightly so!).

Face it, it’s time to play Tiawan Jones. It's a logical play, and a very meaningful one for preparing the 2013 roster.

The fact that he got more reps. than T.Jones would seem to indicate that the coaching staff had more faith in him to not fumble, to pick-up blitzes, and carry out his assignment.

In all this back and forth chatter about T.Jones, let's not gloss over that T.Jones has had the opportunity this week to show everyone that he is ready. The message he received was to be accountable for ball security and his blocking assignments.

It is my hope that he will be on the field during game time Sunday to contribute to the rushing attack.

Still with the JONES thing? YAWN. NYR, they aren't isults, they are fact. Here's why....

Teams blitz on 1st and 2nd down especially late in a game when the other team is down by more than a TD. In this case, that we are discussing about JONES, we are discussing a situation later in the game with the Raiders down by at least 2 scores. So seeing as the Raiders are already a pass heavy team, now they have to air it out almost exclusively to try and get back into the game. So if JONES was put in and the other team knows he is soft in picking up the blitz, what do you think the other DC will be calling? Now you are putting your QB in a dangerous situation. Obviously you have never played the game so you may not know this. Thus my comments about your football IQ and ignorance of the situation.

Brandon Myers is a poor run blocker and he is still the best TE the Raiders have, what does that tell you? He is rarely kept in on pass plays to pass block, so again, your comparison isn't logical. JONES was passed over for a practise squad player, he was sent a message, obviously, and he is not on the top of the depth chart as Myers is. Jones will be a nonfactor in 2013, Goodson, who was traded for a scrub, was considered miles ahead of JONES on the depth chart, what does that tell you? RT wrote how Raider fans seem to cling to players who have POTENTIAL, as if they are a top player in the making. They ain't that good and there is a reason that only 1 Raider is considered to be in the ProBowl, if there still is one. LACK OF TALENT.

Adams is # 1 on the depth chart as the Punt return man. # 2 is D Moore, who is way to fragile and important at the WR position to put him in there. Again, lack of talent is hurting the team at that position. Who else do you suggest the Raiders play at that position?

I guess that's the point. If they can't even get something simple and common sense like this accomplished, why should I believe they can turn this franchise into a SB contender? Especially when they have been OUTCOACHED on both sides of the ball in 7 of 9 games so far.

Seriously... name the game we played outside of Pitts and KC where you thought we outcoached the other team... perhaps we can go from there?

Lets go through it game by game...

1. SD DA didn't have a backup long snapper ready, and didn't even have him practicing it on the sidelines after the first one was blocked. The team in general looked unready to play.

2. The Miami debacle.

3. Pitts... we outcoached Pitts with a brilliant no-huddle that they seemed unprepared for. Well done.

4. The Denver debacle. No no-huddle. Defense was a grease fire.

5. Atl... I'd give them a pass if not for closing the game with two straight PREVENT defenses... this is the game I was the most pissed off at the coaches. Good coaches win games like this.

6. Jax.. this should have been a BLOWOUT... the worst team in the league without their starting RB and QB, and we pulled an OT win out of our ass. Outcoached both sides of the ball.

7. KC was a grease fire... we outcoached the worst coached team in the NFL... yippee!

8. TB.. another debacle.

9. Balt... blow out loss. No clue what they were trying to accomplish.

I assert 7 of 9 games out-coached both sides of the ball... discuss:

Tiawan Jones is listed 3rd on the Raiders depth chart. The #1 and #2 went down, so it’s logical to put in #3, particularly if he’s a threat to go the house.

Why label fans as “ignorant” just because they want to see this progression reveal itself.

If Jones gets extended playing time today, can we assume he learned the play book and ball security in one week?

NYR,

It isn't quite as simple as you contend in your most recent post.

The coaches make decisions on a number of variables from week to week, the opponent, the health of the club, the score, the gameplan, the individual player's evaluation, etc.

I wouldn't get too hung up on T.Jones being listed at #3 on the depth chart. He was an unproven, change of pace back.

If Jones gets more reps. than one can assume that (a) he had a good week of practice (b) the coaches trust him more to get an increased load.

I've been saying all along that I would love to see Jones get a bigger oppportunity to prove his worth but at the same time, he needs to be ready and accountable to his teammates and coaching staff.
