A Question of "Now"

“I mean, they’re real strict on discipline now as far as showing up to meetings (on time), they’re even making us check in for lunches and dinners now,” safety Tyvon Branch said, via Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. “We know that our discipline is what got us in trouble in the past,” Branch said. “That stuff trickles down on the field, and we need to cut down on the penalties if we want to be the team we want to be.”

Now? They're real strict on discipline now?

There's sure a lot of talk already coming out of Napa, eh? In my last take, I noted how our defensive players are thrilled to finally be playing "real" defense.

Now they're talking retroactive smack about an institutional lack of discipline, even though promises of discipline and accountability have hardly been in short supply during preceding training camps.

I don't know what to think. On the one hand, the players sound liberated. In fact, they sound relieved. On the other hand, we've heard it all before, haven't we?

For years now, I've been shouting from the rooftops: no excuses. Well, we're finally and completely out of them. Our defensive "stars" are stepping up to the microphones and saying, "We're now exercising discipline. We're now playing real defense. We now have a defensive-minded head coach."

Good. Now we'll find out how good--or bad--they really are, right?

Everything I've read, heard, and seen pertaining to our new head coach has positive in terms of leadership, command, and clearly defined vision.

Last year, the defensive unit was ranked #29 in point allowed (433); ranked #29 in yards allowed (6,201); ranked #31 in 1st downs allowed (369); and ranked #32 in yards per attempt (5.1).

In regards to our D in 2012, I don't think it is reasonable to expect a switch to be flipped over night and go from one of the worst units to an elite unit.

My expectation is that we will see solid, steady, tangible, quantifyable progress from camp to week 1 to week 5, and throughout the season.

Watched the open practice on the nfl network. Palmer looked good moving around. Granted no one was chasing but still seemed mobile. Charlie Casserly is one of the few on that network that I listen to. He claims that with a full camp and a healthy McFadden, CP3 can be a top 10 qb.
The other reporters kept saying "really, really? "
Casserly stayed on point.
He also mentioned lack of real depth at rb.

He also said that the D did nothing to improve itself. As good a coach as Allen might be, they are several players and drafts short of where the Raiders want to be.

Thinks they can put points up but can't keep the other teams O from controlling the clock.

For the record, I agree with him on all these points save the rb comment. Have to see on that one.

"He also said that the D did nothing to improve itself"

-- agree and disagree.

Agree about the need to infuse more talent on that side of the ball from future drafts and free agent acquisitions in 2013 and beyond.

However, disagree about "doing nothing to improve" in terms of putting the current players in better positions to succeed.

The biggest improvement on D will come from the MAJOR changes implemented by a HC and DC -- scheme, philosophy, multiple looks, less predictability, more discipline, etc.

I expect our D to improve incrementally across the board in terms of measurable progress in the significant statistical benchmarks.

As for camp... I have been there and see progress for both units. its early in the process and they are installing the base for both. as for players, DMC looks strong without issue. Goodson looks to be #2 on the RB chart for now and a fullback will be doing our short yard work...... Carson is crisp! Has a command of the field and is far better than the others on the list....Prior has much to improve with his passing and footwork. Will be at camp this week and will let u know what i see....Cheers for now

From what I've garnered from the beat writers, the practices have been going extremely well... very up-tempo, businesslike, and with the new systems being picked up quickly by the units.

It will be interesting to see the 1st preseason game vs. the Cowboys this upcoming Monday.

Tommy Kelly made a statement about "Hard to break old habits" when discussing his troubles jumping offsides.
This kind of goes along with the Take here, that there seemed to be a lazy attitude on the Raiders team the past 11 years. Now they have to play and work to be paid, no more scholarships.

In the 1960's, 70's, and 80's, the Raiders had many great players that thrived in an environment of little, to no rules.

Now we can ask ourselves. Did the environment cause the players to excel, or were the players so great, they would have succeeded under any circumstances ?

One thing is for sure. Since around 1995, the Raiders, the Gruden yrs aside, have talked big, but played small.

I think Reggie Mckenzie, and Dennis Allen, have only begun the task of remaking the Raiders roster.

Reggie did the best he could in the off season, with limited draft picks, and cap space.

I'm sure Reggie would have liked to make many more moves then he was able to make.

So whatever happens this season. Remember this is the very early stages of what Reggie intends the Raiders to look like 2 years from now.

But yes, the players left on the roster will be expected to fight to win their jobs. And perform at a high level to keep that job.

So let the games begin. And let the best players be the last ones standing.

Raider 00 -

I agree -- your post is very grounded in reality.

We are in year 1 of a brand spanking new era. There is a lot of work yet to be done.

You simply don't go from being out of the playoff 9 straight seasons to hoisting the Lombardi trophy over-night.

It is a process. It takes time, patience, talent, stability, leadership, and a unified vision.

The important thing is to be building a culture, system, team, and organization that is doing everything in it's collective power to put the team in the best possible position to be competitive, make the playoffs, win playoff games, and ultimately, play for a SB ring.

Quite frankly, there has been a remarkable, tremendous amount of work already done in a very short period of time to get the team on the right track for future, sustainable success.

Cap space and a bouuntiful of draft picks in 2013 will be golden!

I have been extremely impressed with McKenzie and Allen's work to date.

Onwards & upwards! Go Raiders!

Here's a fearless prediction for the upcoming season.

Raiders will install some "Wildcat" plays featuring Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor will perform so well, that he will become the starting QB by mid-season.

Just going with my gut on this. I think Palmer is on the downside.

I also think signing Lienart was the only bad move Reggie made this off season.

Can't think of one thing Lienart has ever done in the NfL that encourages me.

Pryor has the arm, and the legs it takes to make it as a NFL QB these days.
Just a question of him getting the experience.

Bringing him along slowly in a wildcat offense makes sense to me.

I think Pryor will end up being Al Davis' last great gift to his team.

7:09 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

Raider 00 -

I respectfuflly disagree with most of your points above and I guess we will see how things unfold.

Point 1: Pryor being the starting QB by midseason.

Personally, I think Pryor is a major long-shot to EVER become a starting QB. Would love to see him make leaps and bounds in his progress over the next few years but to date, his is nothing more than a project with athletic abilities.

Point 2: Palmer is on the downside.

Based on his performance the last 3-4 seasons, I would agree with you but there are numerous variables that will go into Palmer's effectiveness in 2012. I believe his brief hiatus from football, changing teams, a full camp, an above average OLine, rushing attack, and skilled WRs will allow Palmer to get back to a top (not elite) level QB.

Point 3: I also think signing Lienart was the only bad move Reggie made this off season.

As a #1, Lienart isn't a fit. As an experienced back-up with familiarity with Knapp, he is a solid pick-up.

I'm surprised to find you are so down on Mr. Pryor.

The trend in the NFL these days is QB's making big plays with their legs.

That is why players like Cam Newton, RG3, and to a lesser extent, Tim Tebow, are so dangerous.

By the way, I have not heard that the Raiders intend to use Pryor in a wildcat scheme.
But it is my great hope that they will.

That is my point. Palmer is a pocket passer, with no ability to escape the rush.

Lienart can move a little, but has not shown he can throw the ball, either from the pocket, or on the run.

Pryor, we know, has a big arm, and can run like the wind.

At the very least, this makes him suited to run the wildcat, 8 to 10 plays a game.

And lets face it. If Palmer falters, Lienart is not the answer.

That would leave Pryor as the go to guy.

11:43 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

IMO, the Raiders sink or swim with Palmer. The separation between Palmer and Pryer is light years.

According to the media watching practices, Lienart is #2, and it's not even close. I think Pryer is a longshot to ever be a credible backup QB.

If he can be converted to WR, he won't be the first or last former QB to do so. This year, however, he will be holding a clipboard.

5:08 AM
Blogger nyraider said...

From Corkran:

"...take it from someone who sees Palmer every day. He looks great in this offense. His mobility isn't an issue, his arm strength is fine and his conditioning is top notch."

Add to that the fact that Palmer is veteran savvy and calls protections and audibles at the line with the best of them.

5:16 AM
Blogger Storminator said...

Going to Pryor is one of those wacky maverick ideas that I hope the Raiders are moving away from. Palmer is clearly a professional, prepared, polished QB in the NFL. His skills go far beyond arm strength or mobility.

If we're down to Leinart, our season is in trouble. He might squeeze out a win or two if the rest of the team can carry him. That would be a lot better than Boller did, if it happens.

If Pryor comes in on some gimmick plays he has a chance at success. If he becomes The Man we're in enormous trouble because he lacks the experience of calling plays, protections, reading pro defenses, and probably won't be able to install the full offense. In short, he's pretty limited right now. He's simply not ready to be a starting NFL quarterback - physical skills aside.

I desperately hope the Raiders days of throwing unprepared physical specimens out there are over.

40 times are irrelevant for a QB.

The best QBs use their awareness to slide a step forward, backward, or laterally to avoid pressure while keeping their eyes down the field.

Even super athletic QBs in the past (Elway, Young) or the current crop (Newton, RG3) do the majority of their best work within the pocket.

12:48 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

As far as Pryor being utilized within the offensive play package, I'm all for it.

Of course this would be limited to just a handful of plays but it would be exciting to see Pryor in some goal line situations, wild-cat, 2 pt. conversions, WR sets, trick plays, etc.

If he is a contributor to a few positive, impactful plays, that would be a real plus.

12:52 PM
Anonymous Raider00 said...

"If he(Pryor) is a contributor to a few positive, impactful plays, that would be a real plus."

I agree Calico, and that's all I am hoping for.

That Pryor's athletic abilities do not get wasted on the bench.

And if Pryor does run the wildcat well. Hey, why not dream big.

Remember, Pryor is a serious athlete. He takes staying in shape to heart.
So I can only conclude he will apply himself in the same way, to learning the Raiders playbook.

Pryor is not Jemarcus Russell, who when he took his shirt off, looked like an advertisment for Jello Pudding.

1:12 PM
Anonymous JONES said...

3rd string QB's don't usually attract such attention. Pryor is way behind the top 2 QB's, if the 'wildcat' is such a big thing in the NFL, why do we never see it? It takes more than being a "serious athlete" or a "workout rat" or a "fast time in the 40" to create a QB that can win in the NFL. Throwing in a 3rd string QB to run a few plays because he can run, is mickey mouse football, unless it's garbage time.

Pryor is a non issue until he can prove that he belongs in the discussion. Pryor and his 'pimp'...trolling all day long trying to pimp his boy into contention.....he must be in jail?

PR - don't get your panties in a bunch over the Q&A I posted. I don't condone it. If that’s a jab at Al Davis it is disrespectful beyond belief. I’m surprised Herrera wasn't there to flex his paper muscles and escort that person out of the PC.

As for the Q&A, I was genuinely shocked by the statement. That's why (and the only reason) I posted it. In the few years I've been here at RT, I have never dissed the man in that way, and don’t expect others to, especially professional media. That’s totally uncalled for and, as I said, unprofessional. I remain a fan of Al Davis, despite that I disagree with the way he runs the team. Whether you chose to believe that or not really makes no difference to me. It’s a fact.

Ok, something very strange happened.

The Q&A I posted this morning was verbatim from J-Mac’s blog. I went back to it and found the content in question had been removed. I then searched the web for another transcript and found the same language as now posted on J-Mac’s site.

I assure you, this is not a hoax, at least not by me.

The perpetrator is either the author of the Q&A section I read this morning or it was removed (A) because it was distasteful and classless, or (B) to protect the media individual who made the comment.

I would like to email J-Mac and ask, but I am unable to find his email address (which is no surprise considering all the nuts he would hear from, today me being one).

I have no answer. If you want to believe I made it up, I have no proof that I didn’t. However, I assure you I did not. As I said, I posted it verbatim, in pure shock that it was said. I have stood behind every post I've ever made on this site. I have no problem accepting what is fact and acknowledging when I'm wrong.

However, this is pure mystery. Perhaps it will surface again in some fashion. Hard to believe that could get put out there then removed without a trace.

Too funny...anything to do with Jethro = bad. I see you predicted a AFC WEST crown for the Raiders if Palmer reaches certain stat numbers.

When evaluating a QB, his running speed is not one of the top factors, unless you want TEBOW as your QB. A QB has to have quick feet, but his forty time isn't really a huge concern. Can he pick apart a defense is more of a concern, ya think?

Can he read coverages, can he make fast decisions and adjust during a play? Can he feel the heat and move up in the pocket at the right time, can he feel that blitz that he can't see from his blind side? These are the qualities, not 40 speed or how far he can jump from a standing position.... Not if he can throw the ball 70 yrds from his knees.... Pryor is a puppy dog when it comes to what is needed in an every down QB.

It's hilarious that you spread your "Pryor pimping" all over the 'net' until you have almost all Raider fans on these blogs gagging on it. He is 3rd string and no he isn't even close to Palmer....Pryor reminds me of you Jethro...a 3rd stringer who is way over hyped.

LoL!!..That's The Problem...I Don't Under Estimate His Desire To Run!!!

I think Reggie wants a good insurance policy at “RB” so one or 2 injuries won’t derail our season…This I would say is because everyone in the house knows we will run that “Pig” to death…

Hope Is Alive Faith Is Missing!!!...I Just need To See Something Before That Fath Returns...

But talking about it does open the mind to the possibilities and that’s a good thing…

I hope the hell Knapp proves me wrong and everyone is laughing at me…That would be so sweet!!!…The alternative is me posting “Told You So” and that would SUCK!!!

I'm Usually The Optimist Also But It Feels Like We're Still A Season Away???

We definitely have the core when healthy but with a few pieces yet missing…

On the “O” @ “TE” and perhaps one @ “OL”…“RB” depth??

“D”…@ “DT”/“NT”….“LB”….“CB”???

I think with another season Reggie can find those final pieces to plug in…Everything is new now so I expect it to take some time to gel…Build up steam and be firing on all cylinders sometime around mid-season by which time we may be playing from behind??

Once again

As long as Al was alive our Raiders were never going to be relevant MAK. Regardless of who we drafted or brought in as FA’s he was going to continue to meddle. What other team’s owner hires all the assts and coordinators then hires the Head Coach? Determines the final 53? Drafts the player he wants despite who the head coach or scouts suggest? Rest assured neither wanted Russell or DHB.
What other owner forces the D.C. to run a defense WWI vets are familar with? Grossly overpays FA’s who can’t even play at all? He ran Marcus Allen, the greatest RB in Raider History off just because he was mad at him!! Traded him for goose necked Harvey Williams, are you kidding me? Didn’t even bother offering Nnamdi Aso, the one of the best DB’s in recent history a contract yet was willing to pay Antonio Cromartie, a baby making machine not worthy to carry Nam’s jockstrap more than the 4 yr 32 ML $ he took to stay in N.Y.? WTF !!! You think most of the Nationers are not thrilled Al is finally out of the way? Hell yeah, I sure as hell am!!

How can you say that when you have witnessed dysfunction and inptness the last decade? If Al was still here Carson would not be for one, Routt would still be here, as would Kam Wimbley, Boss, Groves, Eugene, hell Sam Williams would even be a possibility. We would still be in cap hell, Mr. Bubbles would still be here waiting for Al to croak and making some of the most asinine decisions in Raider’s lore. the D would still be the most penalized unit in the NFL and Bubbles would still be making pedicure appts. We would have drafted 4 DB’s that run 4.2’s but can’t spell cover and once again we would have been the laughing stock of the NFL Draft and Combine 10 yrs running. Eventually Hue would fall victim to ProjectorGate II and chaos ensues once again. Billboards criticizing Al go up in Hollywood. The Nation finally gets fed up and Al moves team to Irwindale for sure this time.

Most of us don't remember the

era before there was a moonwalk panties but you once again you are spreading half truths and not comprehending my simple words. I stated we would be a Top 15 defense, when I say that I’m referring to as total D.
What you are bringing up is is the #2 pass D two yrs ago but why was that? Because we were putrid vs the run so teams simply ran the ball down our throat man, elementary. Same as all the other yrs the past decade, do you think the Nation is ignorant? We all witnessed it playa, which is why we all wondered why Al drafted a liquor loving kicker, fast cb’s that can’t cover worth a damn save for Aso and he ran him off, Hamburglers BF, a tatoo artist OT, and last and certainly least, a fast for nothing wr with bullet resistant hands.

From Bay Area media–

"Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden attended a Raiders practice in Napa for the first time in 11 years, when he last coached the Raiders. He was here as part of his prepartion for broadcasting Monday night’s Raiders-Cowboys game."

That's because he was banned from the facility... and his photos removed from Ricky's at the request of the Raiders.

Boy, how times have changed.

LUNATIC... that guy is an obvious provocateur, a troll that goes to site to site just to piss people off and get a reaction....sounds just like you, hey agent orange? That guy is right up your alley, not mine.

NYR...seeing Gruden walking around the Raider practise, makes me glad he wasn't rehired as a HC. His time has passed, Allen is much like Gruden when he came to Oakland. Hungry, motivated, in charge. Have to wonder what was going through Gruden's mind as he was watching the Raiders practise. Wonder if it stirred his desire to coach again?

How bout' a new era @ Raider Take where the comments are a means for an intelligent debate & discussion about football related topics?

For those who want to continue to lower the bar or comment about those lowering the bar, do yourself a favor and do it on another site or better yet, not at all.

The potential is very very high either by Air or by Ground with those legs against the 3rd team "Scrubs"!!!...Any Takers??

Or just "Talkers"!!!....LoL!!!

Raider00 is right....Pryor will shine when given his opportunity!!!

One preseason game don't make or break a "QB" but at least we will see/know something instead of just "Blind Speculations" based upon a perceived wasted 3rd rd pick!!

Well said, Calico Jack. Here I was, getting back on the Take Horse, feeling minty, and then it was suddenly "just like old times," in the worst way possible.

My next take is going to tackle this subject. It will be up shortly.

I have recommended actions by you before...You didn't feel it was necessary anymore...But as I warned once an "Infestation" is welcomed in as one of your own the ill effects will spread throughout your board and it most certainly has bringing out the worse in all of us...Now that's just history!!!

Once upon a time "Troll" who only spoke adversely and disruptive were deleted from your threads and as a "Family" of Raider Fans we were able to discuss our lives/wives/children/military life and Raider Football at will...None of which can be done now without all out assaults upon anything posted...

Would anyone dare to speak about his wife now???...Post a pic??/...I think NOT!!!

I have removed myself twice from this board as a result of the constant ignorant CRAP!!...Each time coming back to witness assaults upon my wife or what I do elsewhere!!!....This was that b2nd time and the record above is very damn clear!!!...That was done for NO other purpose but to cause disruption...Polarize and keep Polarized the posters here...It was a deceptive and unnecessary attempt to further take the joy out of our up coming season!!!...Exactly the same as it has been on that other board where I now spend my time!!!
