Peyton in AFC West?

The comments have overflowed on the previous take, so I'm just doing a quick post to keep the conversation going.

It sounds as if Peyton Manning might land in our division, with Denver courting him hard, and Kansas City lurking.

How that might affect the Raiders depends on his health. The reports still vary. But if he's healthy, he's going to make the division tougher to win. If he's health, he's an elite quarterback, and elite quarterbacks win games.

It doesn't change my outlook on the Raiders, but there's no denying that it could upset the divisional dynamic, and not in our favor.

Nothing really worth having is ever easy and if it's worth fighting for than you have to just throw everything else aside and go for it....

In the AFCW there is no clear winner...No clearly dominate team...We all finished at 8-n-8 or one game behind...It's not a very strong division anymore but we all face very stiff competition in our schedules this season...

That being the case it's understandable why that "Donkey" -n- "Squaw" would be willing to put everything in hawk to get a player like Peyton while hoping he's still got that "Savior" left in him...Desperation!!!

But Offensively I would give an edge to the Raiders over either of these two teams...Simply because I have very serious doubts that Payton can finish a season and our "O" is allot more dominate if we get our game rolling again...

"SD" is really the main competition as long as they have Rivers even if they do lose "VJ" in "FA".....

But I think the real dividing line in this conference is going to be which team can establish a strong consistent "D" and I'm not sure we have much of an edge there????...In fack we may be at a disadvantage if this season has any resemblance of the past 2...Basically we sucked!!!

And aside from the "Hoopla" there isn't really much else to base much hope upon...No "CB" while thin at "S"/"LB"....That's just the reality at this point!!!

PR: As you have stated over and over, Al Davis did not trade for Palmer.

And why would it come to anyone's surprise that Daniel Snyder might be more reckless than Al Davis?

For their own sake, the Rams should do better with their additional draft picks than the Raiders did with theirs when they traded Jon Gruden to the Bucs.

I know it's irrational and I question myself but I can't help it... I 'hate' Rivers & the Chargers. Oh I know he's a good guy and very good QB and great dad n all; BUT!!! I used to feel this way about Denver, as much as I loved my Raiders I had an equal amount of enmity for the Broncos... funny but within a short time of them becoming crap, I've felt nothing but ambivalence toward them. I find this applies to players as well; especially when they leave our division
So to my point... Apart from the fact that Peyton Manning would elevate the Broncos at great risk to our rise; I don't want him in Denver because I really like watching him play and don't want to root for him to lose every time he steps onto the field.
So Miami get busy n get Peyton!!!!

I think Manning would bring big time excitement to the AFC West. It would make the Raiders a better team too, IMO.

He is a stationary target and KC and Den's olines aren't that good. That means target practise for the Defense...I say, bring him on and let the boys loose on his ass, put him down hard and OUT. Don't need a 'bouty' for that, just get the job done.

I'm looking forward to this season, it's going to be fun to watch a Defense that has a modern scheme. The chains are off and the boys are ready to roll, let Manning be one of the victims.

AFCW is wide open and completely up for grabs.

I'm really excited to see what our offense and specifically Palmer can do with such big play weapons such as McFadden, D.Moore, and Ford healthy.

I am also pumped up to see an aggressive, modern, unpredictable D cut loose.

Funny thing is that Bruce Allen might have played a significant role in the blockbuster trade you're so certain Davis would never make, yet it was Bruce Allen that helped the Raiders to post their last winning season, approximately 10 years ago.

The Raiders slump started after a blockbuster deal for Gruden.

What are the chances the Rams will slump for 10 years after the ransom of draft picks they will get?

////Tim Brown chuckled a bit. The former Raiders receiver and three-time Hall of Fame finalist was asked his opinion of the Bounty controversy surrounding the New Orleans Saints.

"My answer," Brown said after stifling his laugh, "may surprise you a little bit because, I don't want to say that it's part of the game but I think it was sort of done a different way back in the day. If you got a guy out the game, that was a big deal.

Brown, in town for the Raiders' Commitment to Excellence Award dinner at the Oakland Airport Hilton honoring recipient Rock Cartwright, spoke of the sport's nature in explaining his feelings.

"Football is a dirty, hard game," he said. "I mean, it's a hard game; it shouldn't be a dirty game. And if they can show any plays that were dirty, illegal (by the Saints), then I think (critics) got a point. But if somebody hits somebody a little harder, it's still football.////

Salary cap set at $120.6 million for 2012

The salary cap for next season has been set at $120.6 million, according to league sources. As expected, the figure is almost identical to last year’s salary cap of $120 million.

The league later confirmed the figures.

The values for restricted free agent designations and franchise tenders have also been set. The regular restricted free-agent tender is $1.26 million, while a second-round tender is $1.927 million. The first-round tender amount is $2.742 million.

Franchise tags (in millions):
Quarterback: $14.436
Running back: $7.742
Wide receiver: $9.515
Tight end: $5.446
Offensive line: $9.383
Defensive end: $10.605
Defensive tackle: $7.96
Linebacker: $8.856
Cornerback: $10.281
Safety: $6.212
Kicker/Punter: $2.654

Well for the record last season there was an additional $6.5 Mil or so that was allowed for the transitional year to help get teams under the Cap and an additional $3.5 Mil or so that could be borrowed against future years...Thus the actual Cap was around $30 Mil....So trying to come in now at $120.6 is not an easy chore!!!

NFL takes millions in cap space away from Cowboys, 'Skins

The NFL has taken away millions in salary cap space from both teams after the two NFC East clubs pushed spending into the uncapped year to save money under the cap in 2011 and '12.

The Redskins and Cowboys were the most egregious offenders, as they dumped huge base salaries to players such as DeAngelo Hall, Albert Haynesworth and Miles Austin into the 2010 season in order to get the big numbers in those deals off the books while there was no cap.

The competition committee would not give final approval of the new adjusted salary cap number for the 2012 season until this matter was taken care of. The union pushed to make sure the pool would not shrink, so it was decided that the savings from the Redskins' and Cowboys' infractions would go back in the pool, and be split among the 28 abiding teams.

Ha! Ha!....They went into hawk and lost anyway!!!...Now they will lose again big time!!!

This from Corkran: Whoops!!!

the Cowboys losing $10 million in cap space and the Redskins $36 million, according to an ESPN report.

In turn, 29 teams received an additional $1.6 million in cap room. The Raiders and Saints are the only two teams unaffected by the league’s ruling. Presumably, the Raiders and Saints also were guilty, just to a far-lesser degree.

So this should read "28" teams not including the Raiders/Saints/Girls-n-Skins...

"J-Mac":

"Because of a minor infraction regarding contractual issues in the uncapped season of 2010, the Raiders, along with the New Orleans Saints, reportedly will not receive $1.6 million in cap relief as a result of punishment meted out to the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys."

The new adjusted Cap is than $122.2 Mil???

Raiders still at $120.6 Mil...

Well I guess we spent it in 2010 so 2011 and now wouldn't be affected....We only lose the "Gift" and not the Cap space but that "Gift" would have been nice about now...

Boss was at $4.75 Mil but we only save $2.5 Mil???...This move still cost us $2.25 Mil???

Routt/Wimbeley/Bush/"CJ"/Boss/Eugene;

Routt and Wimbley were good not great players who were being compensated like elite players.

Bush was a luxury we couldn't afford.

Boss we lost because we had to make drastic roster decisions to get under the cap.

CJ and Eugene were injury prone, back-up journeymen DBs. And?

Belligerence for the sake of creating confrontation is nothing more than a weak attempt to divert the attention from the undeniable, facts ...

We have gone 9 consecutive seasons without reaching the playoffs or having a winning record.

Our owner passed away after a tremendous contribution to our franchise's identity and success. He should have got executive help 4-5 years ago and gone out on top.

The M.Davis/McKenzie/Allen leadership group dawned a new era in Raider football.

We have lost players this offseason who were previously signed to contracts far beyond market value for average performances in 2011.

We have lost players due to being $25M over the cap and needing to get into cap compliance.

Is McKenzie crying about it? No.
Is McKenzie making excuses about it? No.

McKenzie is rolling up his sleeves and is diligently moving forward.

Maybe he knew he couldn't be a starter on a winning team. What team would start J.C. right now? Crickets? Cleveland? Maybe he couldn't take the fact that the Raiders traded for Palmer over him? Needed a new jersey? Cutler does get hurt and maybe he is banking on that? Wasn't he another big contract? Cap savings = mutual decision to move on.

Gary,

Have you seen our current depth chart at TE? I'm not buying the "concussion" excuse for letting Boss go. Didn't Boss play in the majority of games in 2011? The few million that were saved by cutting him loose seems to be a situation where cap compliance took priority over the depth chart. What it really boiled down to is McKenzie making difficult roster decisions which goes with the turf. I will put it another way ... IF the Raiders were $10M, $20M, or $30M under the cap like other teams, would Boss have been cut? It is a legit question to ask I think.

Sure it is. I'm more bummed about losing Chaz because nobody took the time to give him a new contract. Now we can't afford him.

As far as Boss goes... he had one horrible game where he dropped two or three crucial balls, and then Hue basically stopped calling his name. CP seems to be really high on the USC kid Ausberry.

Moore: 33/77 = 43%

Thats why I wish we could keep him... for whatever reason Palmer and/or Hue didn't trust him.

I think he might end up being a number one for some lucky team in a few years. You're right NYR.. I hope he doesn't end up in the AFCW so I can continue to root for him!

In fairness to Moore, Ford and even DHB, they were targeted deep far more often than Schilens, who was more of a possession receiver on shorter routes... probably due to threat of another injury.

Just like Boss, it won't take much to replace Schilens' production (23 catches).

Ironically, the guy with the worst numbers (Moore) is probably the best WR, with game-changing abilities.

Goes to show what stats are worth.

True, but there is also a reason he is considered a "possession receiver"

I watched Ausberry play numerous games at USC and he has the potential to be an excellent TE although he is unproven (yet) in the NFL.

Athletically, he is gifted. The big challenge will be getting him to be a proficient blocking TE.

I do think that losing Boss, an established proven TE who was underutilized (for whatever reason) last season, isn't a big deal.

All things being equal, I would prefer having kept Boss and allowing Ausberry and Myers continue to develop.

I love the possibilities of Moore (in 2nd season), Ford (in 3rd season) and DHB (in 4th season) continuing to improve. Interesting enough, DHB is probably our best "possession" WR for short pick-ups. All 3 guys are more than capable of 50+ reception seasons with a full season of Palmer pulling the trigger.

I've been lobbying for two years for a proven veteran wide receiver to shore up the ranks. I still am.

DHB is already hurt again. Now Ford is hurt.

This is what makes the Miller signing so crucial.
-----------------------------------------
Blogger Raider Take said...

PFT reports that the Seahawks have signed Zach Miller. New take going up shortly.
-------------------------------
Zach Won't Be Back

.As our receptions leader for the past three years, he will be sorely missed.

It seems to me that there are two priorities when a team heads into the free agency season, in this order: (1) do everything to get better; and (2) absent that, don't get worse.

How's that working out for us so far?

There's still time, but losing Asomugha was a big hit. Replacing Bruce Gradkowsi (whom some would argue was our best quarterback in years) with Trent Edward as our backup QB is a step backwards. And now our receptions leader is heading north to be with Tom Cable and Robert Gallery.

The Raiders seem to have been caught flat-footed since the free agency floodgates have opened. Don't we still need a proven veteran wide receiver to shore up the ranks, especially now that DHB is showing his frailty once again? Malcolm Floyd, Steve Smith...Even Braylon?

Anyhow, I'm just calling it like I see it. I'd love to be more positive right now. That said, there's still time.

It's hard to imagine losing starters like Miller, Asomugha, Gallery, Huff, etc, will actually improve the Raiders.

The offensive line with be filled with inexperience, yet expected to perform at a higher level than the long-time veterans they replace.

The secondary may take a big hit nobody on the Raiders can fill Nnamdi's shoes in man coverage.

TE was thin before Miller's potential departure. Without Miller, we're pretty much screwed.
----------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

So we signed a marginal CB for $10.5M per year, and allowed the best CB in the league to walk for $12M a year? Relatively speaking Routt received the better of the two guarantees.

Nnamdi is a class act and I can't help but root for him to succeed. Good thing he didn't end up with another AFC West team.
----------------------------
nyraider said...

It's one thing to approach FA cautiously, it's another to let your best player walk when his price was reasonable.
--------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

Anyone care to speculate how much Cromartie is worth to the Raiders? This is where the rubber hits the road. This guy better not get anything near $12M from the Raiders, or the entire nation will be bullshit for losing Asomugha.
----------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

The Raiders have their roster pretty much set and, yes, I would agree that their plan has been in place for months.

The Raiders clearly planned months ago to send Gallery packing and allow Nnamdi to walk. They had no intention of re-signing Gradkowski (to protect Campbell's ego) and JLH was no big loss.

They eyed Cromartie for about 30 seconds on the fly, but the Jets had no choice but re-sign him.
---------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

Asomugha and Miller were arguably the best players on each side of the ball that the Raiders had. Losing both of them could be a real problem if other players can't step up.
--------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

From PFT (as of Tuesday):

"Per a source with knowledge of the cap numbers, here are the seven teams that were in the red: Raiders ($17.3 million), Steelers ($11.5 million), Texans ($8.5 million), Vikings ($5.6 million), Lions ($5 million), Cowboys ($3.7 million), and Panthers ($939,000)."

The Raiders are in the biggest cap trouble. If they can't restructure and/or extend more contracts, somebody else of considerable value might be leaving the Raiders.
--------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

Raider00 -

The Raiders have not replaced outgoing talent with equal talent coming in. Boss is not signed.

And Asomugha took several years before he was a good CB. Are you prepared to wait several more years after making some improvement last year?

It's no time to take about taking one step back to take two steps forward. We have lost valuable momentum in our fight to break .500.
---------------------------
Blogger nyraider said...

Raider00 -

Those are all reasonable points.

I'm not writing off the season, by any means. However, on paper, I believe the Raiders have lost a step. We have put too many eggs into the Wimbley / Routt / loper / Eugene basket and completely abandoned our top tier players such as Nnamdi (who signed for a very reasonable price), Miller and Gallery who helped get us where we are (i.e., a .500 team).

Now the Raiders find themselves more above the cap than any team, so signing other players, as you suggest, can only come with some magic by Al Davis (which, admittedly, he has done before).

IMO, the heavily reliance on inexperienced players would have made sense about five years ago. But coming off our best season in 8-9 years, we risk losing what momentum we had.
----------------------------

9:32 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

Blogger Calico Jack said...

I don't care what cap magic is performed to salvage Miller ... the over-spending for Routt, Wimbley, and Henderson (and SeaBass and Lechler) put us in this cap crunch. Because of the shortened window of FA, we lost Nnamdi.
--------------------------------
Blogger Calico Jack said...

At this point, I just want Zach Miller back.

As I've said all along, I would be absolutely shocked if we sign a single tier 1 external FA.

We are going to need a significant impact from a few rookies and our young 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year players.
----------------------------
Blogger Calico Jack said...

It is clear to me that the Raiders dealt with some very significant cap challenges this offseason.

It has become quite apparent that these challenges has caused us to double-down on Hue Jackson and a very young core of players.

Losing 3 significant starters (Asomugha, Miller, Gallery) and not gaining any significant FAs to date (yet) stings.

As Hue Jackson has been saying continuously the past week, "when 1 man goes down, another needs to step up".

We need our rookies such as Wiz and Barksdale to step up BIG time.

We need our 2nd and 3rd year players to make a big uptick in performance and consistency.

We need our veterans to have top performing seasons.

We need to have a magical season in terms of a minimal # of injuries/missed games by key starters.

But most importantly, we desperately need the coaching staff leadership and veteran leadership to BUILD a TEAM that EXECUTES and plays their guts out for each other.
------------------------------
Blogger Calico Jack said...

Before ...

#1 LG - Robert Gallery; arguably the most consistent performer on the Oline since 2008

#1 CB - Nnamdi Asomugha; 4x Pro Bowler and captain

#1 TE - Zach Miller; most productive pass catcher the past 3 seasons.

and After ...

#1 LG - Loper or Smiley

#1 CB - Stanford Routt

#1 TE - Brandon Myers

These are 3 positions which were significantly downgraded.

Our poor management of the salary cap allocation dollars created a situation where our hands were severely tied in terms of being able to (a) keep key personnel (b) add additional top tier talent.

I hope I'm wrong but ...

Instead of the feeling of building upon the foundation of 2010, it feels like we've taken a step back.
-------------------------------

Blogger Calico Jack said...

It looks like our last gasp effort will be to restructure the contracts of Seymour, Routt, and another player or 2 to sign Boss as a replacement for Miller.

In spite of Miller being a more productive player than Boss, I would be pleased to get Boss on our 53 man roster.

The Raiders clearly need an experienced TE with solid blocking and pass catching skills.

This would be my projected off-season scoreboard:

Losing Ski and gaining Edwards: A wash

Losing Gallery and gaining Smiley: A wash

Losing Miller and gaining Boss: A slight downgrade but vital to get Boss in the fold.

Losing Asomugha and inserting Routt as #1 CB paired with #2 CB Johnson:
Significant downgrade but somewhat expected.

Overall, we took a step back by lowering the talent level and not building upon the foundation from last year.

That’s a bit much, isn’t it? I agree with CJ. In hindsight, I still stand 1000% behind every word of what I wrote and you re-posted.

The sad reality, which you are struggling to accept, is that Al Davis was working in diminished capacity during his illness, and perhaps even before. Sure, he shined to end in certain areas that he always excelled, but the organization became fragmented. This much has been presented by Mark Davis and McKenzie.

The way I read the current player losses is that they are out of cap necessity or simply the right move.

"TE" Boss - underachiever
"RB" Bush - a luxury we can’t afford
"RG" Carlisle - aging (might get re-signed)
"QB" Campbell - replaced by Palmer
"DT" Henderson - failed his physical
"CB" Routt - big cap casualty.
"CB" Johnson - under-performer
"FS" Eugen - injured

It really doesn’t matter if you want to blame Mark Davis (not sure why), but contracts from making one huge run at success last year where too much to bear.

Perhaps if AL was still in charge, he would have worked his magic again and some of the players on your list would have remained.

Be aware, in a few short years, money under the salary cap will carry over to the next year. The way the Raiders historically manage their cap, this would not benefit them.

Another way to look at the Raiders max-cap spending is that they have yet to field a winning team. That falls on management; always did, always will.

Just curious, but if you believe that statement to be true, why are you so pissed off at Reggie McKenzie for, as you say, the same damn crap?

Why weren't you this upset with Al Davis?

Gary, I pretty much agree. The offense has some really good young talent.

The Raiders biggest weakness has to be in the defensive secondary. I'm a little surprised McKenzie is not more active in FA and hasn't already targeted a couple DB players for interview.

It's pretty clear he will be working in the second tier market... which is fine with me. It's a refreshing change.

Pryor ... nope, 3rd string supplemental draft pick.

Palmer ... nope, he wasn't a free agent.

Curry ... nope, he wasn't a free agent.

Darryl Blackstock ... nope, a special teams player from the UFL

Matt Giordano ... nope, not a big name, and a backup.

TJ Housh ... nope, a journeyman WR out of football.

Stephen Heyer ... nope, not a big name and not a starter.

Beyond Boss, who we cut after 1 year, point blank, who are the 2 big name free agents that were legit starters that we signed?

As I understand it from reading the original posts;

NYR would exit RT for a year if the Raiders signed more than 1 "big name, tier 1" external FA who are legit. starters.

If the Raiders sign 1 or 0 "big name" tier 1 external FAs starters, PR would walk.

As an outsider to this challenge, my view is that PR talked tough:

"Doubt your man enough to "Put Up Or Shut Up" but I will wager that Mr Davis makes a splash in "FA" this season...."

NYR met him head on:

"You're on! Loser leaves Raider Take for one year. Davis must sign more than one top tier FA who was not on the Raiders roster last season"

And since that time, PR has weaseled, delayed, and attempted to fillerbuster out of the bet. Sad.

The reason the Raiders haven't made any splash is because we were $15M+ over the cap just a few short days ago.

The Raiders plan was very simple and straightforward:

Do the best possible job retaining key players and add depth where needed.

The need for additional FAs this late into the preseason is a product of shoring up deficiencies, adding depth, creating competition, replacing departed FAs (Asomugha, Miller, Gallery), replacing retired FAs (hello Smiley), injured FAs (Eugene, Ford).

Clearly there was never any intention of making a splash in free agency which makes this bet a complete joke.

And let's not forget who wrote a check that there mouth couldn't cash ... this ridiculous bet was all on you PR for shoving it down our throat and being confrontational about it when there was no need to do it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Raiders sign 1 or 2 more players.

However, any add-ons will be journeymen cut from their squad who would be signed to add depth to our roster.

All the true "Top Tier" free agents are signed already. Sure there are a few "big name" FAs out there but there is a reason that these players are in the market ... injury concerns, past their shelf life quality, or marginal players at best.

The lack of a "splash" in free agency means the Raiders will need impact seasons from a few rookies and rely on improved performances from key 2-4 year players.

The whole premise of making a free agent splash is to add top tier, elite talent to an existing foundation or base of talent.

Since when is this a splash;

Lose Miller, a pro bowl player, and add a player who was less productive in his 1st 4 years. Wash at best.

Lose Asomugha, a multiple pro bowl performer and shuffle the deck to Routt as #1 and CJ #2. Downgrade.

Lose Gallery at LG and go with a rookie or journeyman FA in Heyer or backup journeyman in Loper. Downgrade.

Simple question that boils this debate down to the bare essence:

In what position did we upgrade by adding an external free agent?

A Raiders scout was at the workout of Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor on Saturday morning. Pryor is regarded as the most attractive player of the six entered in the supplemental draft.

Seeing the Raiders scout confirms the team’s interest. Coach Hue Jackson downplayed the Pryor angle when asked about him Thursday.

The Raiders already are without second- and fourth-round picks in the 2012 NFL draft. However, it’s likely that they will gain at least one compensatory pick for a net loss of free agents in 2011.

Agreed PR. A man is only as good as his word.

#1 I didn't sign off on the Pryor deal. Pryor is not a free agent but a 3rd round supplemental draft pick PROJECT.

#2 The Raiders have not made a "splash in free agency".

If you were a "man of your word", you would depart now. Adios.

And yes, there is an excellent chance we will sign a FA LB in the next few days with Goethel being out for the year with a torn ACL. This is not a "splash" though ... it is a reactive move to cover for an injury just like the Boss signing was no more than a reactive move to replace Miller.

Ask any Raider fan or NFL fan the simple question:

Did the Raiders make a splash in free agency this year and the answer is unequivocally, resounding "NO". Why? Because we didn't.

We didn't make a splash in free agency but I knew full well that you would spin this and make it more complicated than necessary.

Well, I guess that’s it. I lost the bet. Although, I question the acceptability of Pryor’s inclusion now that it’s been announced he will be suspended for five games.

I doubted until the end that the Raiders would select Pryor. I guess I assumed Davis was still too shell-shocked over Russell to consider another QB project (to which the Raiders have a horrendous history in developing young QBs).

It wasn’t until I saw the stat-line on Pryor’s pro day that I realized he might become a Raider. According to the initial media report, Pryor posted a sub 4.4 40.

So now the Raiders have the fastest RB (T Jones), fastest WR (too many to list), fastest CB (again, too many to list), fastest OL (B Campbell) and fastest QB (T Pryor) in the NFL. I’m probably missing a couple “fastest” player positions.

It’s like Davis built his team to compete in the Wide World of Sports NLF Challenge.

That said, I think Pryor is a good risk (at +/- $520k) , and I would say I was wrong to compare him to Russell.

From what I’ve seen (which is about the same uninformed access that I had to info on Russell), this kid can play. Also, I think he can make an immediate contribution. To wit, he doesn’t need to learn the entire playbook. He can be featured on a half dozen plays (pass, run or catch) and expand from that. He’s a weapon.

Perhaps next year or in 2013 he can be the Raiders QB.

In the more immediate future, the Raiders are without their 2nd, 3rd and 4th round draft picks next year.

IMO, that means they are ALL-IN with this current group. Like it or not, this is the team they have assembled to make-it or break-it for the next couple years.

Somebody mentioned compensatory picks. I believe those picks lag one year. I read that the Raiders were just awarded a 7th round pick in 2012 for last year’s net loss in free agency. That means 2013 is when the Raiders will pick up a couple (or three) higher picks for their net loss in free agency this year. That speaks volumes to the non-splash that occurred.

Clearly, no splash was made. But a bet is a bet. To the victor go the spoils. (I’m actually shocked you [PR] are not rubbing this in my face.)

Go Raiders! NYRaider over and out!

The best take-away from the countless comments on the bet is RTs which removes all subjectivity;

"if you were to ask any objective, impartial observer which teams made a "splash" with personnel moves in the NFL over the past month, the Raiders would not be mentioned."

If you want to drill down to the brass tacks of the bet, the following is 100% accurate;

1. The Raiders did NOT make a splash in free agency.

2. The Raiders signed 1 big name free agent (Boss) who is a downgrade on our previous TE (Miller)

3. Pryor is a 3rd round project who has 0% chance of being a starter this year.

4. The definition and meaning of a "top tier" player is a guy who is signed that is an instant starter from day one.

Spin it any way you want PR. You are welcome to huff and puff your chest out all you want but it will have no bearing on my moral values or sense of right and wrong. Deal with it because I'm not going anywhere.

Blogger Calico Jack said...

Don't expect any new player coming through the doors who can make a difference in 2012.

Pryor is a long shot, project at best who has zero chance of playing QB and less than 1% chance to learn a new position (WR/Slash), play, and make an impact. An effective
"slash" player in 2013 with a full training camp? Possible.

Big trades are highly unlikely since the Raiders have very few quality draft choices to bargain with.

It is funny because I asked a simple, straight-forward, direct question which was the basis of the bet. Name 2 big name free agents that we signed.

Instead of a direct answer, PR wrote 2000+ cut and paste words that shows his true colors ... side-step, circumvent, divert, and try to spin.

Once again, name 2 big name free agents that we signed that were legit starters.

Read this carefully, Sherlock Holmes:

"PR - I'm in. I will stop visiting this site for 1 complete year if the Raiders sign 2 big name free agents who are legit starters."

Is Pryor a free agent? No. Is he a legit starter? No.

Keep running the Pryor bit up the flag pole and see how far that gets you. Nowhere really fast, loser. I couldn't give a rat's ass if you and NYR agreed about Pryor.

Me being "in" on the bet was, once again, "PR - I'm in. I will stop visiting this site for 1 complete year if the Raiders sign 2 big name free agents who are legit starters."

How much clearer is that?

It is interesting and quite revealing that you cut and pasted this line from me;

"Fair enough ... come Sept. 12th we will know if the Raiders made a splash in free agency."

OK dirt-bag. I will ask this 1 more time ... how many BIG NAME FREE AGENTS WHO ARE LEGIT STARTERS did we sign?

The answer: Unequivocally 1 and only 1. Kevin Boss. Have a nice day LOSER.

If truth be told, you have NO business on this site since you lost the bet. Deal with it scum-bag and stop being such a coward. You know you lost. Now deal with the consequences. Once a punk, always a punk.

I'm quite certain the grown-ups are quite tired of your schtick. If you didn't notice, you, and only you, keep dragging everyone in the dirt where you reside. Everyone else wants to have an intelligent (key word: Intelligent), football related debate and discussion but you keep bringing up the bet that you lost.

I'm no shrinking violet. If you take a punk ass, off-base shot at my honesty and character then guess what? You start it, I will respond and finish it.

Quite frankly it is played out. You know I'm not going anywhere and everyone knows you are a complete troll.

PFFFFT. What a crock. Cut through all the crap and weed through the list one by one, name by name.

How many of these guys were free agents?

How many are "Big Name"?

How many were actual starters?

Anyone who has a pulse on reality knows that when the bet was originally concocted that it was for "Big Name" free agents ... making a big splash ... legit starters. Once you've weeded through the list and the answer is Boss and only Boss.

Why do you throw in the non-free agents? Why do you add journeymen back-ups, UFL scubs?

Answer: You are spinning to divert attention to my direct question:

Name 2 big name free agents that we signed that are legit starters. Go ahead. All you need to do is name 2 Big Name free agent signings that were legit starters. That isn't so hard. We don't need long lists and 2000 words.

If a backup gets x number of starts being the starter gets injured, it doesn't matter. If a guy plays special teams, it doesn't matter. Why? Because it doesn't qualify for the original intent of the bet of making a SPLASH with BIG NAME free agents who are legit starters.

Tired of this BS. Take it up with someone who gives a shit about your twisted nonsense. Your continual volume of BS is annoying like a fly buzzing around that you want to swat. $$$ Can Be Rolled Forward To The Folowing Season's Cap???

Cap at $120.6 Mil….Must spend 90% of that season’s Cap…$108.5 Mil…

Thus a max of 10% can be rolled forward….$12 Mil…

Some teams will no doubt be able to do this and their Cap is at $122.2 Mil so $12.2 Mil can be added to next season’s Cap…

My question is will they now have to spend 90% of all that’s available???…

$121 Mil 2013 Cap
+$12.2 Mil Roll Over
-—————————————
$133.2 Mil total available for 2013 Cap…They would have to spend $119.9 Mil….$13.3 Mil could be rolled over again???…

Eventually they are stuck spending the entire Cap for that season anyway so it doesn’t really pay to try and save…

This:

Raider Nation settles into a distinct two camps: one that stands united in support of the brazen tearing down of the roster assembled by the former regime and new GM Reggie McKenzie in wait for gems believed he will find in subsequent waves of free agents, another that watches in horror as division rivals Broncos, Chiefs, and Chargers sign contracts to address roster deficiencies whilst they only mount in Oakland.

Perhaps, a roll call is now in effect:

the list of FAs w/ yrs in the league from Yahoo sports:

OT Khalif Barnes 7
ILB Darryl Blackstock 5
QB Kyle Boller 9
OLB Jerome Boyd 1
S Tyvon Branch 4 (franchised)
DE Mason Brodine 0
DT Desmond Bryant 3
RB Michael Bush 4
QB Jason Campbell 7. Now a Chicago Bear
RB Rock Cartwright 10. Now a 49er.
S Matt Giordano 7
OLB Quentin Groves 4
OT Stephon Heyer 5
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh 11
CB Bryan McCann 2
OLB Jarvis Moss 5
FB Marcel Reece 2
C Samson Satele 5
WR Chaz Schilens 4
DE Trevor Scott 4
CB Lito Sheppard 10

LB Kamerion Wimbley. Not yet a FA, but believed by many to be destined for release.

starters under contract:

OFFENSE: QB Carson Palmer, RB Darren McFadden, LT Jared Veldheer, LG/C Stefen Wisniewski, G/T Joe Barksdale, TE Brandon Myers, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Denarius Moore, WR Jacoby Ford, WR Louis Murphy

DEFENSE: DT Richard Seymour, DT Tommy Kelly, DE Matt Shaughnessy, DE Lamarr Houston, MLB Rolando McClain, OLB Aaron Curry, LB Travis Goethel, CB Demarcus Van Dyke, CB Chimdi Chekwa, S Michael Huff, S Mike Mitchell

tendered or tagged:

DT Desmond Bryant, DE Mason Brodine, CB Bryan McCann, FB Marcel Reece. SS Tyvon Branch franchise tagged.

Offensive line remains an area of concern, with McKenzie and the Raiders looking to shop FA first before making offers to Khalif Barnes who may also be ultimately cut.

CB and LB both currently need either depth or are lacking personnel at each position. Kamerion Wimbley still a question mark for the former SLB spot, currently remains under contract but time will tell if he's released as well.

The most notable cut belongs to Kevin Boss, now a member of the KC Chiefs giving them a duo at TE that should command respect from the league, leaving in question whether the Raiders will proceed at the position without a top tier starter. It has already been speculated throughout Raider Nation that the Carson Palmer airshow will not need one.

Early indications from workouts scheduled with the team show the Raiders have at least the G and CB positions as potential free agent targets, and many fans anticipate former Hue Jackson acquisition Kyle Boller's name to be replaced on the QB depth charts with an FA not named Rhett Bomar.

The current state of the severely depleted roster also highlights key areas the Raiders clearly need depth, and others that will need upgrading in order to give Allen all the tools the team will need to implement their plans going forward, and to compete in a division that could look very different in 2012, especially if a guy named Peyton is inserted into a certain lineup. Lots of questions remain, with very little by way of answers at the moment, that is, until word of the first signing comes out of Alameda.

So while astronomical dollars float across tables across the country, the purse strings remain tight in Oakland look to stay that way.

The quiet before the storm? The dark before the dawn? Patience is a virtue... not commonly possessed by fans of the silver and black!

If we restructure again we just send even more $$$$ against our 2013/14 Caps...If we sign these players with back loaded contracts it's again the same problem...If we bring in new "FA" by awarding back loaded contracts and huge signing bonuses we my very well find ourselves in this very same type of Cap Hell next season...

This is how the Raiders have operated for years. How do you think Al Davis got below the cap every year?

This is what McKenzie is trying to get away from, but it won't be entirely possible until the current contracts can be phased out.

The Raiders parted ways with their best pass rusher Friday, releasing outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley before $17.5 million in guarantees were set to kick in on the contract he signed last training camp.

The Raiders managed to get under the $120.6 million salary cap without cutting Wimbley, but clear an additional $4.5 million after his release.

Wimbley will still receive $6.5 million from the Raiders in 2012

LoL!!!...So we end up paying him more this season than we saved by cutting him and now have to go out and try to find a replacement for his 7 sacks per season!!!

But hell never question anything here because that's desertion!!!

LoL!!!...But it was/is OK to bash the hell out of ownership???

PR said: "How many players were cut last season???"

Last year is when all the mega contracts were signed and set to explode this year.

I would guess that not less than 4 Raiders players doubled, tripled or better their salary from 2010.

Wimbley went from about $600k to $11M+/-

Routt got $10M+

Henderson from the vet minimum to millions

Eugene, Huff, etc, etc, etc.

This thing was going to blow up with or without Al Davis.

The two guys you were most worried about (Palmer and Curry) both restructured and present minimal issue for the Raiders.

Wimbley was put in a no-lose position of not having to do anything to collect his millions.

Now, he'll get paid by the Raiders and by his new team, just like everybody else!

By all accounts, Briesel and Bartell were excellent signings. Kudos to McKenzie.

NYR:

To echo your thoughts ... I think McKenzie is working through the initial cap hell and organizational transition with both short and long term goals.

The payroll and roster needed immediate attention but McKenzie understands that the process will take time to put us in a better position for future seasons/drafts/free agency periods.

This off-season he has faced down the gun barrel and made some difficult decisions. I have all the faith, trust, and confidence that McKenzie was the right guy at the right time to take us into the new era.

From Pro Football Talk:

"While these additions will generate little attention because they occurred late Friday, they are quality signings by first-year G.M. Reggie McKenzie. Bartell and Brisiel are both immediate impact starters."

It will be less about a "splash" and headline ink and more about getting guys in that will improve the product on the field. I would anticipate plenty more guys from the waiver wire, undrafted college players, 2nd tier free agents coming through the door who will impact the bottom line: Wins.

At least you could look before you run your mouth into the sand as usual!!!...NO New Henderson Contract!!!

02/17/2011 DT Richard Seymour re-signed
02/24/2011 LB Kamerion Wimbley designated franchise player
02/25/2011 Re-signed RB Rock Cartwright and CB Stanford Routt
07/29/2011 Re-signed LS/LB Jon Condo and DE Jarvis Moss
07/31/2011 Re-signed FS Michael Huff
08/01/2011 Re-signed LB Kamerion Wimbley
08/02/2011 Re-Signed C Samson Satele
08/06/2011 Re-signed RB Michael Bush

But this did turn up and shed some sparkling light on things giving some direction to where Reggie is going with this:

Why So Serious?

The people who think we will be in trouble next year and 2014 with the cap because of the restructure of contracts are wrong the ext. just made there 2012 salary a signing bonus and the additional years are voidable in 2014. But also that is when the new TV money comes into effect and the salary cap will increase big time . So we are doing right .

Now if true Reggie can wheel -n- deal his way back into contention with more "Briesel and Bartell"s...

But this will be back loaded contracts with huge signing bonuses just like I projected only maybe that's not such a bad thing if we can make it till 2014???

Official word from the source: "The Oakland Raiders: The Oakland Raiders have signed two veteran performers with extensive starting experience—cornerback Ron Bartell and guard Mike Brisiel."

"(Bisiel 5 mil, Bartell 3 mIllion = 8 Million"

No word yet on how the contracts are worded...Only this:

Ron Bartell signs for one year for $3 mil, immediately steps into #Raiders starting lineup at cornerback. Neck checked out fine. - Vito Tafur viz twitter

One year deal will NOT be easy to back load to 2013/14???...Signing Bonus is divided over the length of the contract so one yr is still one yr...Apparently that entire $3 Mil will count against the 2012 Cap...Not sure yet about the $5 Mil for our new "G"???

PantyRaider...Finally!!!...Thanks Reggie For Showing Something Positive!!!!/_

By Bill Williamson
Dennis Allen has finally landed Ronald Bartell.

Three years ago, when Bartell was last a free agent, he visited the Saints and struck up a relationship with Allen, then New Orleans’ secondary coach. Bartell ended up re-signing with the Rams.

Bartell
Friday, however, Allen and Bartell united. The Raiders signed Bartell to a one-year deal. Bartell, 30, will be one of Oakland’s starting cornerbacks. The Raiders will continue to look in free agency for another starting cornerback and have been in the mix for the Saints’ Tracy Porter, who has played for Allen.

Bartell said he is looking forward to playing for the new Oakland coach. Bartell also played for Oakland defensive backs coach Clayton Lopez in St. Louis.

I caught up with Bartell on Friday evening. He is excited about the opportunity to work with familiar faces.

"This is the perfect match for me," Bartell said. "I know some of these guys and I feel comfortable with what they are doing. I really look forward to the opportunity to playing in Oakland."

Bartell, who has 66 NFL starts, missed all but one game last season with a neck injury. He said he is completely healthy.

"I’m looking forward to stabilizing the position for Oakland and showing everybody how effective I can be when I’m healthy," Bartell said.

"5 year 20 mill for Brisiel"

So this can be spread out over the term of the contract and NOT count entirely against our 2012 Cap...

Reggie the "Capologist"!!!

Speculation is the one yr deal for our new "CB" is tentative upon his health and that if he looks good he can be resigned/renegotiated to a longer term deal that lessens our 2012 Cap hit thus freeing up additional $$$'s...

Neck injuries are always a huge concern so Reggie is smart to give this more time for further evaluations...

Further Needs:

#2 “CB” (May already be on the roster?)
“C” or “LG” (May already be on the roster?)
“OLB”
“DT” or “NG” (May already be on the roster in a 3-4?)
“RB” Short Yardage (May already be on the roster?)
“TE” (May already be on the roster?)
#2 “QB” (May already be on the roster?)
#3 “QB”

Lot’s of depth???

David Garrard...Now a "FA" could be a nice pick up at "QB" for our run oriented "O" under Knapp...

Height: 6 ft 1 in
Weight: 235 lb
NFL Draft: 2002 / Round: 4 / Pick: 108
Pro Bowl selection (2009)
TD-INT 89–54
Passing yards 16,003
QB Rating 85.8
Rushing Attempts 380
Rushing Yards 1,746
Rushing Touchdowns 17

"CP3" doesn't exactly fit what Knapp says he intends to run...The "QB" needs to roll out and be mobile which is NOT the normal for a "Pocket Passer" like Palmer...But Palmer does fit the Timing Patterns where he has excelled in the past...Word is he's Mobil enough to get it done but that's still a concern???

Both Gerrard -n- Pryor are very nimble of foot but do they fit a Timing "O"???

Not sure it makes much sense to try a return to the "Gannon" type "O" without the bodies already in place to run it...Also NOT sure Knapp can do for the Raiders what was done in Houston where Knapp was only the "QB"s coach NOT "OC"???...With Al Saunders assisting it will hopefully be a smooth transition but that's still questionable...

At least now we have a "ZBS" "RG" who also has experience at "C"...

"Wiz II" appears to be very mobile/athletic so may fit this well...

Campbell should also fit with his mobility and athleticism...

At this point I have no idea how Veldheer or Barksdale fit in this or who will be our "RT" so some questions remain on the "OL"???

Raiders | Mike Brisiel agrees to five-year deal

Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:19:16 -0700

Free-agent OG Mike Brisiel (Texans) agreed to a five-year deal worth $20 million from the Oakland Raiders Friday, March 16.

"The Raiders had some money to throw around at players after spending most of the past two months paring salary and creating salary-cap space.
Earlier today, the Raiders freed up $4.5 million by releasing veteran outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. The Raiders still have around $10 million in cap room."

Maybe you should take your own advice!

Henderson spent the past two seasons with the Raiders. He was originally signed to a one year deal at or about the vet minimum for his position. He was injured during much of his first year (situational player in about nine games), but Davis then signed him to a 2-year deal worth $8 million. He was due $4 million in 2012.

Look it up yourself. Better yet, here:

BTW, if you're pulling transaction lists off the Raiders website, you're a bigger fool than I thought. Historically, the Raiders only post about 80%-90% of their transactions.

I guess, being a Broncos fan, you wouldn't know that.

The funny thing is that Murphy is better than Chaz and the stats back it up.

In less games played, Murph has more receptions and more yards than Chaz.

Chaz
44 games played, 72 receptions, 902 yards, 12.5 avg., 7 TDs

Murphy
41 games played, 90 receptions, 1,371 yards, 15.2 avg., 6 TDs

As far as who plays the slot ... the same guys who played it while Chaz was in street clothes.

Seriously ... Why are you worrying (or moaning) about losing a guy who was injured most of the time and averaged less than 20 receptions per season?

06/15/2010 Signed DT John Henderson

On June 11, 2010, Henderson signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders. On February 24, 2011, he signed a 2 year, $8 million contract with the Raiders, keeping him through the 2012 season.

Now "NYR" notice that I will always correct a mistake that I make when more info is added....Can't say the same for you "IAAF"er ass holes now can we????

It's NOT the "Argument" that's important...It's the "Truth" which for the most part you "IAAF" "New Optimist" totally abandon in search of ways to bash a man's memory!!!!

Now that's pathetic!!!

So how about addressing the issue as far as where all that rolled back $$$$$ are going that's been renegotiated this season and how that's going to affect future Caps???

After all that's the issue that was being thrown around NOT whether or not John Henderson was resigned in 2011!!!

I posted that Reggie is doing exactly what Al Davis has been doing as "Copologist" which you have Scorned!!!....Signing contracts that are back loaded or with huge signing bonuses while restructuring present contracts with huge signing bonuses while rolling back those $$$$ to future Caps...

The other issue I raised is that Reggie has hired the exact type of coaches that you Scorned Al Davis for!!!

Newbies -n- Retreads!!!!

NO BIG Name Coaches!!!!

Now the other issue I raised is the loss of veteran starters and our depth and how will those starters be replaced???...Remember how you Scorned Al Davis for the loss of Gallery/Zack-n- Namndi???

Sense than we have replaced our "CB" -n- "RG" with quality help if the "CB" proves to be healthy...

None the less we have lost 10 off that list so where does it go from there as you now celebrate what you once Scorned???

The 4th issue I raised is the loss of present and future draft picks like this season's 1st and that 2013 1st-or-2nd???...

All of which you continually Scorned Mr Davis for but are now pimping your celebrations of "The New Era" while the same damn things are taking place!!!!

Broncos’ Manning hopes dimming?

Denver Broncos

Even though the Denver Broncos are believed to be a finalist in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, they ended Friday with “diminished expectations,” according to the Denver Post’s Mike Klis.

According to Klis’ sources, Manning’s top two factors in determining where he will sign are: “One, which team gives him the best chance to win a Super Bowl or two in the next three to five years. Two, which team lives in the type of market he feels comfortable for his family.”

Manning already worked out for the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday and is slated to workout for the Tennessee Titans next.

The Oakland Raiders met with free-agent CB Shawntae Spencer (49ers) Friday, March 16.

Raider free agent LB Trevor Scott joins Patriots

The Bolts have gone crazy in free agency. In total they have inked 12 free agents. Five of them were their own-LT Jared Gaither, S Steve Gregory, TE Kory Sperry, TE Randy McMichael, and C Nick Hardwick. Then they went out and got LB Demorrio Williams, S Atari Bigby, LB Jarret Johnson, WR Eddie Royal, FB Le'Ron McClain, and WR Robert Meachem and QB Charlie Whitehurst.

Broncos

The news this offseason has been mostly bad for the Broncos. First they found out several of their players would be suspended the first portion of next season. They have also been silent in free agency while the teams around them in the AFC West, even the Raiders, have been filling holes and making upgrade.

I rather have my doubts that Murphy sticks another season...His production has been vastly diminished right along with his minutes...

Contrary to what "SmackJack" tried to pimp the reality is this:

Murphy: 2011

15/241 yds 16.1 ave -w- 11 1st Dns....

Now that's certainly NOT very impressive #'s and his worst year to date....

Chaz: 2011

23/271 yds 11.8ave 2 "TD"s -w- 13 1st Dns...

The issue Gary raised was about $$$$ so anyone want to wager that Chaz as a 7th rd pick was making Murphy's $$$$$ as a 4th Rd pick????

Com'on!!!...Any Takers or just Talkers???

LoL!!!

Word is that Reggie has his eye on a few young "WR"s in the later rounds of this draft...

"LB"s are the other projected targets...

Looks like Reggie is looking at Vet help at "CB" -n- "G"....

But still we prolley need depth at "DT"/"RT"/"C"/"TE"/"RB"/"QB" depending upon who's ready to start amongst our younger players...

That’s false. I have in the past praised Al Davis for his ability to manage the cap, and particularly his ability to get players to renegotiate contracts.

What I tend to criticize are the risks Davis regularly took in signing players, and the insanely high prices he typically paid. That’s what is being flushed out right now (‘contracts out of whack!’)

As for Reggie doing the same thing Davis did (renegotiate and back load contracts)... he had no choice. How was he supposed to get the Raiders under the cap and provide room to sign other players?

McKenzie is simply putting out the fire; and you are spitting on the fireman.

Sometimes I wonder if you even watch any of the games? Murphy stated out well but looked like a shell of a WR this past season. He's never had great hands, and to make things worse, he looked TERRIFIED to take a hit last season.

This is the guy you want to play in the slot next year? Seriously... unless McK signs a veteran WR (for much more money than Chaz) we don't have a single possession receiver on the roster right now. Ford Murphy, Moore, and DHB all play the same position. Fast dudes that run straight line routes.

How anyone can come here with a straight face pretending this was a good move is beyond me... just keep drinking the McKenzie Koolade I guess..

Just because we didn't have anyone playing the slot when Chaz was injured, doesn't mean that is what we should do next year.

Gary,
I'm not going to get hot and bothered about Chaz leaving.

The facts are that the guy had a serious injury history and wasn't productive. He showed flashes of brilliance for a few games but then another injury would crop up. I wish him well.

The reality is that the reason Murph is still on the roster and Chaz has departed is that Chaz' contract expired. Both players can be viewed as late round, inexpensive, marginal slot WRs. Why keep both?

I have every confidence that McKenzie can find an undrafted free agent, late round pick, waiver wire vet, or 2nd tier free agent possession WR if he deems it necessary. Personally, I'm excited about our young WR corps. and believe the slot WR position is a low priority at this point in time.

Comparing the Brisiel signing to Henderson is rather silly. Brisiel (3/1983) is more than 4 years younger than Henderson (1/1979), in his prime, highly desirable for our ZBS. Henderson was a vet min. to provide a bridge for 1-2 years at best.

"but Reggie gave this 30 year old "G" the same damn $$$$$"

sorry PR, but Brisiel isn't 30 ... he just turned 29 a few days ago;

You are the “new” crier on this site. Trail of tears! Oh da horror!

Let me try this again (against Jones’ better judgement).

The Raiders’ payroll is the entire $120M+/-, and not just the $20M at the very top that you want to pin on McKenzie and Mark Davis.

Last year, Davis flooded his payroll with overpriced contracts. Hence, McKenzie’s description of “wacked contracts.”

Are you really this dense?

McKenzie has already renegotiated with Palmer and Curry, so their salaries are moot.

OG Mike Brisiel vs John Henderson is apples & oranges.

Brisiel is expected to replace Carlisle as a STARTER.

Henderson was a situational player. When Davis re-signed him to $4M/year he had been injured and making the vet minimum. Insane!

Now you’re bitching because we let Chris Johnson go but signed Bartell.

Do you follow the Raiders? Johnson was injured most of last year, and he stated he might not play again after the tragic shooting death of his sister.

I’m not aware of any guarantees given to Brisiel or Bartell. Their stay with the Raiders will be (A) subject to their health and (B) performance-based.

Do you have a problem with that?

No, not when you can see a clear process of cleaning up shop...I see a team heading in the right direction, as opposed to a team trying to fit a triangle into a pin hole = last 9 years and before. Hello, the process takes time, it was a hell of a mess. Do you honestly think it could be re-org'd after a month or 2?

What, are you serious?

Henderson was at the tail end of his career when we signed him, hence the original minimum vet contract. He was at best a part-time, situational player.

Yes, he was a pro-bowl player a lifetime ago. The stats are nice but they are what he accomplished in his 9 previous years before joining the Raiders.

Brisiel is a proven OG, but most importantly, a starter from day 1 and in the prime of his career. He is the perfect fit for our team and scheme.

If you are so dim to compare Henderson and Brisiel, I can't help you.

Lastly, the fuss about losing Chaz is comical. The guy was a china doll who averaged 18 receptions per season. How on earth are we going to replace this robust production? The sky is falling ... better duck.

Crying, moaning, worrying about losing Chaz seems insincere in the context of the big picture and bigger challenges that the Raiders organization faces. No question McKenzie has his work cut out for him but replacing Chaz isn't one of them.

Unless a player has stats, he sucks. Right?

So Brisiel has no stats; McKenzie and Allen both suck; and Mark Davis put the team in cap hell....

Oh Da Horror!

Here's what it boils down to:

Either we believe PantyRaider who says Al Davis left the team in perfect order, and the wheels have fallen off since;

or,

Mark Davis, who said "...instead of a clean start with the organization, there's been a lot of plugging holes."

Go ahead Negative Nancy and try to dispute any of these points;

Brisiel is a proven OG (show me where he hasn't been a starting OG in the NFL the past few years for one of the best offenses in the NFL)

A Starter from Day 1 (tell me he hasn't been signed to be our starting RG replacing Carlisle)

In his prime of his career (just turned 29 and has plenty of good years AHEAD of him)

The perfect fit for our team and ZBS (tailor-made to replace Carlisle and a plug and play for our scheme)

Is this weak ass crap really all you got???

"Unless a player has stats, he sucks. Right?"

LoL!!!...No doubt you looed it up right...NOTHING!!!!...Ha! ha!....Well let me help you out:

Mike Brisiel Signed "FA" $20 Mil 5 Years!!!
Height: 6 ft 5 in Weight: 300 lb
Undrafted in 2006
Debuted in 2007 for the Hamburg Sea Devil (NFL Europe)
Games played 50
Games started 47
2011 13 gms 13 starts
2010 12 gms 9 starts
2009 5 gms 5 starts

Do you get a very clear picture yet???...Are you calling this a "Big Name Signing"???...Please!!!

This is the guy who's poised to replace him on Houston's "OL":

Antoine Caldwell
Height: 6-3 Weight: 311 Age: 25
2011 5 gms 3 starts Weeks 15/16/17
2010 12 gms 7 starts
2009 11 gms 3 starts

Do you still need a hint???

There are only 2 reasons why that "RG" was willing to leave a "SB" contender like Houston..

#1....He was about to lose his starting job as evidenced above...

#2....$$$$$...NO way in hell was he going to get that type of $$$$ out of Houston as evidenced below:

The Houston Texans have re-signed free agent center Chris Myers,

The Texans' four-year deal with Myers is worth $25 million, $14 million of which is guaranteed,

The 6-foot-4, 289-pound Myers made his first Pro Bowl last season after anchoring one of the NFL's top offensive lines. Houston set a franchise record for yards rushing (2,448) and ranked second in rushing offense (153 yards per game) in 2011, a key to its first playoff appearance.

Very similar $$$$ Right...$20 Mil or $25 Mil but that was for the man with the stats!!!

So now who did Reggie replace with this superlative "FA" signing???

Cooper Carlisle: "Carlisle's release frees up an additional $3 million"
Height: 6 ft 5 in Weight: 295 lb
NFL Draft: 2000 / Round: 4 / Pick: 113
Bowl Alliance National Championship (1996)
SEC Championship (1996)
First-team All-SEC (1999)
Games played 174
Games started 117
Fumble recoveries 11

Whoops!!...That man has stats and only got paid $3 Mil!!!...Oh!! No!!!...Could it be argued that Reggie threw way too much $$$$ at that NO Name "RG"????

NO other way was he going to leave a "SB" contender like Houston...Period!!!

LoL!!!

Free agent Jo-Lonn Dunbar played strong-side and middle linebacker for the Saints, just turned 27 and the Raiders could use what some scouts say is his nose for the ball. Speaking of Scouts Inc., here’s what they say about new #Raiders cornerback Ron Bartell: “Bartell is a good-sized corner with good overall deep speed. He has long arms that he uses to jam receivers … He is not as physical a tackler as you’d expect for a cornerback with his size and strength but is willing to get involved on run support. He is a little erect in his pedal but is fluid in his hip turn … He has the speed to catch up when he bites on fakes but lacks great ball skills.”

Here's an interesting list of available Offensive "FA"s...

OT Sean Locklear (WAS) - Has a great deal of experience at right tackle in the NFL although for two of the last three seasons, he spent some time at left tackle as an injury replacement.

OT Anthony Collins (CIN)- He would be a steal for any team who signs him this offseason. He is young and has proven he is ready to take over as a starter. He would have had more starts but the Bengals refused to give up on Andre Smith and Dennis Roland. Even though the team had far more success with Collins.

OT Vernon Carey (MIA) - Struggled with the switch to guard last season but in prior seasons he proved to be a solid right tackle for the Dolphins.

OT James Lee (TB) - After nine starts in 2010, he was a strong contender to start at right tackle last season until the team brought back Jeremy Trueblood. He would provide the same solid competition at the right tackle position for the Raiders.

OT Brandon Keith (ARZ) - The team's 2009 seventh round pick has started 20 games the past two seasons. Unfortunately, he has been placed on injured reserve in both those seasons as well. This injury history has the Cardinals balking on re-signing him. But there is no question he is talented and would be worth a look.

C Samson Satele (OAK) - Satele is the best option left in free agency for the Raiders. He has played well at center for the Raiders all while playing through nagging injuries. He is a tough, hard-nosed competitor who has worked hard to bring his game to another level. The Raiders line was solid last year with him manning the center position and it would be again if he were to return. His recent arrest for disorderly conduct does nothing to change that.

QB David Garrard (FA)- The former starter for the Jaguars spent all of last season rehabbing from back surgery. The Raiders made him their first phone call when Jason Campbell went down last season. It was the news of the surgery that forced them to look elsewhere. He is currently making the rounds of visits. First in Miami and next he heads to St Louis.

*QB Matt Leinart (HOU)- Leinart wasn't a free agent when I put together the first QB wish list. He has since been released by the Texans. He worked directly with Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp while Knapp was the quarterbacks coach in Houston last season. So that familiarity could have the Raiders giving him a call.

RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG)- He and whomever the change-up backs were in the Giants backfield have been who Bush and McFadden have been compared with for years. He wouldn't be a long term solution because he is a power back who will be 30 before the season starts. The good news is that will lower his price tag. Also, with a reduced role, the Raiders could get a couple seasons out of him.

8:25 AM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

RB Mike Tolbert (SD) - Tolbert offers the most similar skill set to Bush out there. He is a great utility back who would perform the duties of complementary back to Dmac the same as Bush did. There is of course the added bonus of getting a player off of a rival. The bad news here may be that Tolbert thinks he should be a starter. Oh, boy.

RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (NE) - The "other" law firm is not one who will wow you with his speed or agility. But he is a great short yardage back who has enough speed and quickness to be a feature back if called upon. He is also extremely reliable, having never fumbled in his NFL career.

RB Jackie Battle (KC)- After four seasons of obscurity in Kansas City, he really came on last season rushing for 597 yards in just 4 starts. Two of his better rushing performances on the season came against the Raiders. He is also a big back at 6-2, 238 pounds and the Raiders would be glad to have him. And like Tolbert, he would be a player taken from a rival.

RB Ronnie Brown (PHI)-He fell off the radar last season with the Dream Team Philadelphia Eagles. But what is forgotten is not necessarily lost. He played a pivotal role in the Dolphins wildcat formation for a few years. That style of running would translate well to the zone blocking scheme.

RB Cadillac Williams (STL)- He was Ronnie Brown's college backfield mate so he too is used to being a complementary back. He exploded onto the scene as a rookie in Tampa Bay and had a few good years there, albeit riddled with injuries. He signed with the Rams as a free agent prior to last season and rushed for 361 yards as backup to Stephen Jackson. And as bad as that offensive line was, his 4.1 yards per carry is actually pretty impressive.

TE John Carlson (SEA) - He started out his NFL career with two great seasons for the Seahawks. But after his production declined in 2010, the Seahawks signed Zach Miller. Then Carlson tore his labrum and was out the entire 2011 season.

TE Visanthe Shiancoe (MIN)- This is a guy that Reggie McKenzie is familiar with as his Packers had to face him and the Vikings twice a season. And since Shiancoe had 5 good seasons in Minnesota, that is a good deal of familiarity. The nine year vet has at least one more multi-year contract left in his career.

TE Bo Scaife (CIN)- Just three seasons ago, he was the Titans franchise player. He became a free agent after the 2010 season and signed with the Bengals. He was out all of the 2011 season with a shoulder injury but if he checks out, he could be had at a bargain basement price.

OK. That's your right. I would expect the same for myself, or anyone else with a reasonably grounded perspective.

Personally, I wanted Al Davis to release Schilens for several years and replace him with a dependable (not a diva) veteran. That never happened and Schilens spent the next couple years mostly on the bench nursing injuries. Now he is reportedly healthy and the Raiders dump him for what seems like a very fair price/risk. I get your point... I just think you're overreacting.

I agree with the point that Gary is making regarding Chaz. I believe it was a low risk/cost signing and though Huebert undervalued the slot receiver, as of the current status, it looks like a miss. All that being said, Jones makes the point that we need new blood on here. Speaking solely for myself, part of the reason I avoid these conversations is that we continue to hit the rewind button.

So, with the impending signing of Peyton in Denver, and Raiders00 point that he has a two year window, i offer this take to maybe pull back to where the thread of RT started us off in his post some 180 responses ago. Hopefully it will spur a different dialogue.

Given that we are obviously rebuilding and have a new (or differrent if that suits you) organizational structure in place, what is the window of time that you are willing to allow for the new head coach and gm to have before we truly have a large enough sample size of decisions as a basis to question their approach? Does Peyton's presence in Denver impact that time frame? How are you defining success in the short and long term?

For me, I am defining success as the acquisition of depth in positions through the draft and free agency. This is short term (the next 14 months). Additionally, finding playmakers in the draft and free agency while developing talent that fit the system that is being utilized (2 to 3 years). Based on that definition of success, I would expect marked improvement in defense and a efficient offense over that 2-3 year time frame. The result of this would be by the 2014 season, we would be contending for the division and be a legitimate playoff contender. The baseline of that measurement began in 2012.

So that's my take and here is what I see as a new variable impacting us; Peyton. Does Mr. Manning's presence in the division retard that time frame or is it irrelevant? How much time are you willing to give to see this system and new organizational structure play out? Granting that we have all given the Buddhists a new appreciation for the word suffering over the last decade (and longer) how long are we really going to give this new approach?

#1...Success for the Raiders is always at least 10-n-6 as AFCW Champs and always has been...Anything less that that's a "Bust"!!!

We fought all the way to the "SB" and won as a "WildCard" which was great so making the "PO"s accounts for something but I always expect to take the West!!

Short term is very difficult to assess at the moment...Are we going to be at least as good as last season or slightly better...Or do we fall off the edge???...The most recent moves suggest we will be as good???

#2...Window Size"??

That will be answered on the turf in the 1st half of the season regarding the new coaching staff...If we come out the gate stumbling it will be very difficult to make up ground and yes Payton as a "Donkey" does affect that...No doubt allot!!...But also all the moves that have been made by "KC" -n- "SD"...This just became a much tougher division...

"GM"...

Reggie was my boy and still is...I still questioned where all those early moves were leading us but now also applaud him for making moves that greatly diminish the impact of those earlier moves...

Bringing back Cooper Cheap as "RG" now with suitable depth with good starting experience and versatility was a good one even if the new "G" was a little expensive!!!

The new "CB"s are definately a huge plus when just a few days ago we were being stripped of talent at that position...

Than This:

New update: Oakland is now the front runner in the Tracy Porter sweepstakes
Retweeted by Vittorio Tafur

But Reggie still has several moves left to make before a final picture is presented...That will be at training camp when he has provided all the toys for the new coaching staff to put into motion...

Judgement upon his hire of "Denis The Menace" will be on going throughout the season...

New "CB" Reports:

Both corners are also 30 years old and have had recent injuries. Bartell had a neck injury that had him out all of the 2011 season and Spencer went out in training camp last season with a hamstring injury.

He has had a total of 72 starts in his NFL career including every game in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

with both deals being one-year, the team could still look for a long term solution. They will reportedly be hosting Saints free agent Tracy Porter in the coming days. Porter is younger (26) and be much more of a long term solution. And the team will need as much cornerback help as they can get with the news that Peyton Manning is joining the Broncos.

Thanks Blue Monday for raising the bar in the football related discussion.

I personally don't think the Broncos signing Manning will change the course that McKenzie/Allen/M. Davis are undertaking.

In the short term, year 1, I expect to see our roster retooled, our payroll stabilized, our football systems (especially on defense) modernized, and for a new organizational identity to be established.

I also think the Raiders will win the AFC West with a prolific offense and much improved defense.

The big uptick, in my mind, will be in year 2 when McKenzie has close to a full array of draft picks to bolster our talent level and depth, a more manageable salary cap level, and a solid year under his belt to make the necessary adjustments.

Year 3 should be when complete stability is established and the team is legitimately contending for the Super Bowl.

Complaining about Chaz when the team is moving ahead is like crying about a 'Cheezpuff' that fell out of the bag of hundreds of cheezpuffs.

Ok, I am trying to be nice to you... but cheap 6' 4" possession receivers are not that easy to find.

You are just being ridiculous.

I'm guessing we bring in a veteran slot player for a LOT more money, or we try and draft one and roll the dice.

Or worst case scenario we rely on DHB and Murphy in the slot.

I still don't trust either of their hands, and neither of them have a clue about protecting the football, or gawd forbid playing DEFENSE on a poorly thrown ball.

We need a veteran possession receiver.

Almost above LB right now... and we have horrible LB's yet...

Gary, nope... he's the ultimate slash/backup.

There isn't a player in the NFL we need less than Tebow.

Distractions for CP, a mirror player to TP... the media circus. Distractions to the young coaching staff.

I'd rather we brought in JaMarcus as backup QB... and he's prolly the SECOND player we need less on contract.

Raiders sign CB Spencer (49ers). Solid, proven CB to go with Bartell (Rams).

Reggie is checking off his "to do list" very nicely!
>>>>

No "proven" is Porter.

These guys are more like camp fodder or depth to push our rookies.

We still need starting CB, LB, and WR. Backup FS.

I agree the Cooper resigning was well done.

Also In Oakland Raiders

49ers insider thinks Raiders got a steal in cornerback Shawntae Spencer. He lost starting job due to hamstring injury in camp last year and will come in with huge chip on his shoulder. Harbaugh didn’t like that he doesn’t play special teams, and that’s why he was inactive for games at end of the season.

UPDATE: A source close to the situation said that, while plans can change, there is a strong chance Carlisle will move to left guard and enable Wisniewski to move to center. I think that would be a smart move. Carlisle is a solid pro and Wisniewski may be better suited at center. In Brisiel, Carlisle and WIsniewski, the Raiders would have a strong interior line.

Nothing is official, but it seems like that may be way the Raiders are leaning.

Well I still think Satele at vet minimum may be a possibility as Wis II remains at "LG"???..Than we have 3 bodies who can play "G"/"C"...

Wiz II/Brisiel/Satele "C"/"G" -w- Cooper "RG" presents very good interior depth and versatility...

The "RT" is yet unsettled???

It also should be understood that NON of these moves are Guaranteed!!!...That is to say any of these players could fail to make the final roster while others are kept instead...This is Reggie adding the "Toy"s and waiting to see how all the pieces fit...

Without Guaranteed $$$$'s their contracts can be voided without any significant loss of Cap space!!!...

Also it should be noted that Reggie can and prolley will push the Raider,s $$$$$ commitment over the allowable Cap and have to be back under it by some date in Sept!!!...That's allowable so don't expect those available $$$$$ to completely restrict what Reggie is able to pull off!!!

NO "Armless Running ASS" Allowed In OakTown!!!

http://www.jonco48.com/blog/Half_20Horse_20Running_20_28animated_29.gif

But this Tebow riding that "Donkey" is funny!!!

The Broncos are expected to be agreeable toward what teams are willing to give in any potential Tebow trade, according to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. Denver used a first-round pick (25th overall) to take Tebow in the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Tebow, who rose to fame at the University of Florida, where he won the Heisman Trophy and two BCS national championships. Jaguars owner Shad Khan has mentioned that he would have been interested in Tebow had he been in charge of the team when the quarterback entered the league.

LoL!~!!!...I fucken hope Tebow is traded and becomes a force to deal with as he finally develops an arm while Payton goes down in flames to the "IR"!!!

Seeing Elway ridding that "Donkey" into the turf would be hilarious!!!!

HEE!! Hah!!!

Go Tebow Go...Just get the fuck OUT of the AFCW!!!

More of this freakin Tebow humor!!!

The AFC exec raised the possibility of using Tebow as a "package" quarterback or a "joker" type of weapon in an offense.

But the NFC exec warns that, "He's not fast enough to be an H-back/receiver-type guy. And as a fullback, he'd blow himself up. He's not a running back. He's not talented enough. As a quarterback, he's OK as a runner. But as a running back? No."

The fundamental problem is that whichever team takes on Tebow will have to overhaul its offense -- just like what Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy did in 2011 -- if the plan is indeed to start him.

"You gotta remove pride, remove your ego, and understand this player has a very specific skill set that's outside the box, and outside conventional NFL wisdom at the quarterback position," said an AFC personnel executive. "The more you watch of what Denver did, when you look at the Florida tape, you see how they achieved what they did, in implementing those things."

But the AFC exec continued, "If you're a conventional, dropback team, and you're gonna ask him to hit moving targets and get the ball downfield and ask him to be a pocket-passing player, it's not a good fit. I applaud what Mike McCoy did. He adjusted to the player. That's what you have to do."

And if you do that on a full-time basis, rather than as a part-time fix, it can be complicated.

And it might come from the direction of an owner, seeing the star power and business opportunities Tebow would present.

"That's the wrong way to approach it," said the NFC exec. "It's about winning games. If you're gonna approach it by looking at ticket sales, then you're not a good owner."

LoL!!!...Just No Place In The NFL For That "Armless Running ASS"!!!

Our New "RG":

Brisiel was originally signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He played two preseason games with the Texans as a rookie and spent the regular season on the practice squad. Prior to the 2007 NFL season, Brisiel played as center with the NFL Europe team Hamburg Sea Devils.

Bartell is the No. 32 overall player on the PFT Hot 100 list. Brisiel didn’t make the top 100 because he’s a one-scheme lineman, but the Raiders run that scheme.

LoL!!...Talk about a player who has little to nothing written about him yet was awarded a $20 Mil contracts???

He missed 18 games over the past 3 seasons but I can't even find out what the problem was...Injury or he just sucked???

He missed the last 3 games of 2011 but played both "PO" games...

“It’s sad,” Brisiel said. “It’s one of those things that I thank them for everything, giving me the opportunity, sticking with me through some rough times. I couldn’t be more happy about the way (last) season happened and I’ll always be one of those Texans’ diehards at heart.”

Ah!!...What "rough times" was that???

He’ll be replaced by Antoine Caldwell, who started when Brisiel was injured. They expected to lose Brisiel because they had Caldwell.

LoL!!!...So he was injured...But What???...As I posted there's only 2 reasons he left a "SB" contender for OakTown....About to be replaced and $$$$$$'s!!!

So Ya!!!...I have to question was this player really worth the $20 Mil???...Ain't that a little "Out of Wack"???

PantyRaider....LoL!!!!/_

Ron Bartell
8th year in NFL - 66 starts

Shawntae Spencer
9 year in NFL - 77 starts

YES Gary, Bartell and Spencer are proven, experienced starting CBs.

It looks like Reggie identified these 2 CBs due to low risk/low cost and big upside primarily due to unique circumstances for both players (injuries).

Bartell, Spencer, DVD, Chekwa, and Huff as an additional nickel back. Let's roll.
