Five Keys to Victory

1. Get Javon Walker fired up and ready to play. Walker is a head case, but he’s got ability, too. We need him badly tonight. He’s playing against his old team and nemesis, Dr. Shanarat, so that should count for something, right? Hopefully, Kiffin has pushed the right psychological buttons, enabling Walker to forget about his ailing leg and remember that he’s got something to prove, not only to the Broncos, but to the Raider Nation. Pride and poise, Javon, pride and poise.

2. Denver had an awful rushing defense last year, and the trend should continue on Monday. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to open up holes at home against the Broncos, and there’s no reason not to turn McFadden loose. Kiffin is talking about using McFadden with caution. Well, this is no time for caution. Just turn him loose.

3. Which brings us to: Play to win, don’t play not to lose. Seems obvious, doesn’t it? But how many times have we seen the latter over the past several years? I trust that Kiffin is now ready to play to win, based his own comments from last year.

4. On that note, memo to the Caveman: Blitz! No, really, it’s okay to try. It won’t hurt. Lots of defenses do it. Here, let me help you…

5. Stay loose, have fun, live it up. I’ll be there, and I know I will.

Raider fans- myself included, hate to look at other teams as a model for success. But look at the Steelers yesterday and that's exactly the road we should be taking. Big Ben threw 15 passes and they let there D and running game do the work. I think the Raiders can have a stronger running game then the Steelers and call me crazy I think the defense has potential to be the best in their division. Depth is obviously a big factor so we're gonna have to stay healthy. The vertical game is gonna have to wait and we're gonna have to go to a controlled passing game. Our O-line is not built for a deep passing game yet. And like RT said have some fun, make some plays, and "lay some wood" on defense. Go Raiders! Final score Oak 27-13.

You know the Donkeys will stack the box, because they have to make Russell beat them. So, a little play-action to start the game might be in order.

I don't expect the Raiders to have much success running the ball early (early edge defense), but we will eventually wear them down.

The Broncos will certainly try and run, but Cutler is their key to success. Not having Brandon Marshall will likely be a factor.

SOB is in the last year of his contract. After last years debacle on defense he is definitely playing for his job.

Look for more agression, especially on passing downs. If he wants to stay in the league as a DC this group needs to perform. Especially in the area of run defense and quarterback pressure.

Big Al has done his part. He went out and bought SOB some shinny new tools (safety and corner especially). Now it's up to him to build something with those tools.

I'm hoping the defense we saw from the starters against the Whinners and the Flaming Thumbtacks is the one we will see on the field tonight.

How can you blame cptn caveman if we still can't stop the run?
Al baught him some shiny new toys, but all we really addressed was the safety issue, and nothing to help the D-line (or LB's). Actually it's trickle down: The d-line lets o-line through to take up one of the LB's and now the CB has to make the stop.

If we are not careful, we will WASTE this awsome secondary like we wasted Mr.Woodsen by making them have to tackle WAY to much.
I don't care how big and mean your secondary is, you don't want you cb's to have to make tackles all day that the Dline and LB's should have made.

That said, Tommy-n-the-Turd said we're good to go with 3, so lets see how they handle it. Sands in mile high air should be real interesting! Here's hoping our run game can keep them off the field

My 5 "Keys" to Victory:
1. Stop the run. We expect the Doncos to stack 8, but seriously, we should do the same. We need to give our front 4 help in stuffing the run. STOP THE RUN! Do not give up big plays on the run.

2. Special Teams. We have to play smart on Special Teams. Higgins cannot afford to make a catch on a ball inside the 20 yard line. He should stand on the 20, and if it is over his head, let it go. Janikowski has to be consistent when called upon for Field Goals, and our punt/kick off coverage has to be crisp. This part of the game is always HUGE against Division Rivals.

3. DeAngelo "Dante" Hall. Cutler referred to DeAngelo as "Dante" Hall (Former WR for the Chefs). This tells me they are going to attack DeAngelo, and get him to make mistakes. He also said that they watched endless tapes of DeAngelo with Atlanta to get a feel for his style of play. They are going to attack him in the passing game. Either he needs to step up big, or we need Huff to slide over and cover his @$$!

4. Pass Protection. Run blocking is the easiest thing a lineman can do. They could run block all day. But the game of Football is a game of Balance. As much as we could run, we need to pass the ball as well. When we pass the ball, we need good (not outstanding) protection for Russell to make his checkdowns and get the ball out.

5. This leads me to the next natural spot on the passing game. The WR's. They need to get their routes done quickly, and catch the ball. We have not seen quick route-running since Brown-Rice. This is what our passing game has lacked with the Quitter, and the Pouter. The only WR who's worked hard for us has been Curry. The bottom line is we need crisp, quick route running; with consistent catching.

Our team knows their assignments, whether it is defensive coverages, routes to run, blocking schemes, and special teams; each aspect of the game is coached at the individual performance to the overall picture. I've given an example of this in the offseason about my wife's cousin who coaches defense; and how they had a problem with their defensive end shooting outside on a running play, instead of inside where he should have gone; and it cost them a 63 yard, game winning Touchdown; all because the DE thought he could have made the play. Instead, he blocked out his own help, the Strongside Linebacker. It's the little things like that, that we have to do right; and it's statements from Ryan, Morrison, and Howard like, "We just had guys over-shooting/missing their assignments" that proved that defensively people were out of position. I think those people have been cut. It's time to step up, keep your head, complete your assignments, and execute as a team.

I'm excited for this season. I think we are in a great position to improve on what is being established. I've said it before, 6 wins is my expectation. The Raiders have said they have the talent to win this year. Great, I'm down with that, and I will be the first to eat crow too. Most of you guys know me here. I'm a modest fan. If the Raiders think we can have a winning record this year, great I'm on board. But refer to my motto, "Just Prove It, Baby!"

H, you are right about the media and Brady. I'm amazed that they haven't canceled the football season. How can we have a season without Brady!? Just a guess, but they won't lose that much playing #2. And you're also right, we should expect to be subjected to a "Brady watch," so we can get reports everyday about when he might be ready to come back.

Brady is not that great of a QB, he just has been on the team that's managed to cheat its way to few Super Bowls lately. Now, Payton Manning - there's a QB.

I'm not rooting for 8-8 this year. Sorry boys, but that's not the Raider way. No way I can root for a damn thing under 9 wins. So, yes, standards have been lowered around here. Seems like a nation wide affliction.

And I don't want you people encouraging this team to "shoot for" 8-8. Ever. We are the RAIDER NATION! We play to WIN! JUST WIN, BABY!

Panty, I don't know if you have seen the reports of Kiffin's take on Shaw going to the Donkeys. According to Kiffin, he has no worries. If Shaw were a QB, he says, that would be one thing. (Incidentally, that comment from Kiffin caused be to believe that he was as responsible for holding on to Jordan and Rhodes last season as Davis.) But, he says, no worries about a DT. They just line up and go, and don't worry too much about the play book.

Anon,

One of the shiny new tools was a strong safety that can support the run. Huff played out of position last year, and Stu, well he talked about how refreshing it was having real coaches when he got to Washington only to be released a week later.

Huff is now at free safety and was knocking down passes all over the place in pre season. Wilson took proper angles and actually tackled folks when he arrived. I think I even saw him blitz once.

Run stuffing linemen actually don't make that many tackles. Five in a game is a high number. They occupy blockers allowing the linebackers and safeties to make the actual tackles. On passing downs their job is to collapse the pocket.

My point is, SOB now has the guys who can make the tackles, so lets see if he can get the fat guys up front to occupy the blockers.

Blanda,

10-6 is what I'm shooting for.

By the way. I wonder if Patsie lover has slit his wrist yet over the Brady injury?

And, as unacustomed as I am giving a complement to a Chef player, it wasn't a cheapshot as Moss stated. The guy didn't give up on the play. Something Moss doesn't know about (not giving up that is).

Something I heard over the weekend regarding Moss. When he was with the Raiders, Moss didn't like running on the infield dirt on the BB diamond left for the A's early in the season. So, in order to avoid that, he'd just run a different rout than the one that was supposed to take him over the middle. When the QB would go to look for him, he simply wasn't there.

This must be why I've only heard DBs on the Raiders step up to defend Moss' character. Never a QB.

10:36 AM

finally Moss will face some adversity. when the goin gets tough and they need him to step up and lead he will shrink away and disapear until the cryin and complaining starts about how its not his fault, he's just not in the mood to give it his all. you will see patsy fans, you thought you got over on us, well....your welcome. have fun!!!

btw, qb didn't seem like the patsies only problem yesterday. where were the chefs predicted to finish again? where was that ever vaunted cheater-D? they looked old. once agian NE, ennnnjoy!!!

I for sure agree with RT on the playing "not to lose" thats basically all we have been doing for the last five years... especially during the rare times we got a lead.

I remember saying last year Kiffin didn't seem much different than Art Shell to me... he kept trying to sit on leads instead of attacking for a win. Hopefully with more confidence and experience this will be corrected.

Secondly with SOB and blitzing... I watched the entire NE/KC game yesterday and I STILL cannot believe that SOB came out of the same system as NE. Every third and long brought different blitzes from different stunts and angles... the surprise came when they DIDNT blitz, not the other way around. This has got to be done this year to get anywhere. Lots of our run stopping problems last year came after we stopped them on first and second only to go into the prevent and allow them three more downs... which connects to someone here mentioning how many knock-downs Huff had. Without blitzing last year, our entire defense was predicated on great safety play to knock down passes, and Stuey bit on every pump fake, so it they always had plenty of time and 11 vs 10 players.

At any rate... unless our coaching continues to be horrible, we should easily win tonight. Kiffin is talking the talk... time for him to start walking the walk.

He said Al didn't have to say it, he just walked down the hall and it echoed off the walls.

1) Hit the shit out of whichever Donko has the ball, or is about to get it.

2) If you have the ball, run towards the first Donko you see and hit the shit out of him.

3) Retaliation is a must for the slightest disrepect. Fighting is encouraged.

4) Score lots of points and feel free to run it up at the end.

5) A seperate Donko gets his ass kicked for every point they score. If by chance it goes over 53, the order goes Players, Coaches, Management, Adam Schefter, Lombardi, S.Sharpe, random Donko fans.

I hope to see some good solid football. This season will be riding on the shoulders of the D line and O line. This is where we can win games. Fundamentals will need to fall into place with JaRock, MacD, Zack M, the entire D and speical teams. Coach Kiffin, make us proud"

Both have above ave. rushing attacks.

Both are subpar against the run

Both have suspect WR Corps

Both have AWESOME CB tandems.

Both utilize the ZBS

What ultimately could very well decide this game is the play of the Special Teams.

The defense just absolutley sux. The scheme is just demoralizing to the fans and the players. How does any DB look good in this scheme? Here's the difference in our outdated scheme and other nfl team's defenses:
Everytime we do anything positive on offense it's always followed by someone knocking the crap out of our player... cuz their defense is always in position to tag us. When we're on defense we're NEVER in position to smack anyone. It's some kind of prevent scheme...where we're always chasing the damn play. Never agressive... always chasing. Call it what you will ... "bad football" is what I call it. Believe it or not, I'm really not that disappointed in JRuss. It is what it is ... basically a rookie QB playing behind an OLine who can't pass protect, gets dumb penalties, WRs like Schillens, Higgins, and Lelie getting major minutes, playing from behind ... I could go on and on but the point is it was the perfect storm working against JRuss.

Here are just a few observations from watching this UGLY performance:

A KR (Higgins) who can't get it past the 15 yard line on 3 ocassions... are you kidding me?

A 2x Pro Bowler (Hall) getting his lunch taken from him again, and again, and again by a rookie.

A front 7 who was getting blown off the ball by an undersized OLine where a 4 yard run is considered a "success" for the D.

What I liked (very short list):

Both McFadden and Fargas (at times) could run the ball very effectively. Unfortunately, when you are down by 3 scores, the game plan goes out the window.

TE Z. Miller, although he didn't have a spectacular game, is the most reliable player on the team.

AwesomeWa: Makes plays and can be counted on in coverage and in tackling ... you can count on D.Hall getting a heavy dose of attetion from the upcoming QBs.

I'm totally sick to my stomache as we await the steady call of "Fire Kiffin" from knucklehead fans and media alike.

I pray that McFadden (shoulder) and DBurg (unknown) are 'ok'.

Next week at KC is about as close to a "must win" as I've ever seen for a week 2 game. If we go 1 & 1 there is hope that things won't slide too far. If we go 0 & 2 it is the "uh oh" factor where Kiffin could be fired in the 1st quarter of the season.

Very, Very poor game.

No Discipline. Without Discipline we cannot play smart football.

Overall, I really didn't expect much out of our team today.

Our secondary Suck Butt today.

So we have the best secondary in the NFL with #1 and #2 shut down corners? Well guess what happend all night long. Culter had a field day with us and there was not presure at all on D. How pathic can we be.

Al spend over $230 million in contracts this year, all for what. It did not win us the game did it.

The person I really feel for is Kiffin. He'll suffer at the end of the season. Moreover, some of his play calling was questionable at best.

In what maybe one of the more disappointing games since the Superbowl, Russell squared his shi*t away and looked much better before the end. Fargas plays with more heart than the rest of the team. I'm going to slam a six pack and call it a night, Raiders Fans!

A win is a win, and as ugly as this one was, it's just a loss.

Hang in there brothers.

The emperor has no clothes.

Perhaps this was just an aberation and the Raiders aren't as bad as the dismal display on the field. That they're actually better than the sum of their parts. And once they get in sync they will be respectable.

But I've seen this game before. Over and over and over again, more of the same, past games spliced together but just on a bigger stage, Monday Night and setting, opening day.

I was mad when the game first started, I felt Mike x 3 was a second tier broadcasting crew. I felt the production value lacked innovation, it seemed there was only one camera angle and no replays. But as the game unfolded I realized something. The Raiders didn't deserve any better. The HD looked spectacular, but the play didn't unless you were a Broncos' fan.

I felt betrayed watching this game tonight. As if I'd been duped. There was nothing of the Raiders that I remembered growing up. Or even as recently as 5 years ago. A bunch of frauds running around in the uniforms of the team I love.

Pride and Poise? Commitment to Excellence? Once those words meant something, now they're just a remnant of a bygone era of glory. Words now strung together to be mocked and ridiculed, meaningless.

After spending money like a drunken sailor in the off season the Raiders still can't stop the run, get pressure on the opposing QB or protect ours. It's absolutely unbelievable.

Again this it just one game, and one game does not make a season, but it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel right now.

Kiffin isn't the problem. I can't say much about Ryan. I feel he's been given more of a chance to get the players he needs for his scheme. And yet... there doesn't seem much improvement, but rather regression.

I have to wonder if there is a plan. And if there is what is it? And most importantly, how long before it starts paying dividends. JRuss could be something special (I still feel his throws lack "touch"), DMac looked solid, Fargas is all heart and never ever stops, Miller as Calico Jack said, solid/reliable, Nmandie reminds me of Charles Woodson, not so much in play but rather in his unyeilding stance, nobody is going to beat him. Who am I missing? Lecher maybe... so 6players out of 65? That's going to get it done?

I blame Mister Davis for this mess. And I have to wonder how bad do things have to get before something changes. Or will it just be more piss poor play... but I fear the emperor has no clothes.

On the brightside it's only 1 loss and if they comport themselves better against Kansas City next week... hopefully this will just be a bad memory, soon to fade into oblivion.
