Rise and Shine, Raider Nation

Time to spike your coffee, it's draft day.

I love all these media-fueled lies about how Al Davis can't resist a home-run hitter, which means that he'll pick McFadden.

You mean like Huff, Washington, Gallery, Asomugha, Buchanon, Gibson, Janikowski and Stinchcomb, our top picks in descending order prior to last year? Guys who don't even play home-run hitting positions like DE, WR, QB and RB?

If we pick McFadden, it won't fit a pattern, it will break a pattern, no matter what the media would like you to believe. We haven't selected a running back in the second round or higher since 1995, but the media are bleating about Al Davis and his "patterns" with regard to McFadden. I'll grant you that selecting a DB would be consistent with a pattern. But McFadden? Liars.

Of course, Son of Howie is always welcome in Oakland, and if he's our pick, they should start stitching jerseys on Sunday for sale on the Raider Image, because demand will be high.

Trade down for more picks? Perhaps. But I'd rather have one great pick than a bunch of okay picks. I've had my fill of okay picks over the years. It's time for a home run.

On that note, let your draft day takes rip...

Right-On as usual...

"Money-Trail"....It's been written that if you follow it you will be led to the source of truth....So why don't the "Mediot"s and the Fans follow the Raider's "Money-Trail"...

Where has the big money been spent...And how much more do you want to put the team in "Hock" at one freakin position....

"DL"s....

"DB"s....

"QB"....

"WR"s...

What positions have been spent on sparingly....

"LB"s....

"OL"s....

"RB"s....

So now where will the "Big Money" be spent on Saturday...."GO FIGURE"...Of the 3 positions with little financial attention which ones have players who would merit a #4 pick "OR" have enough value to justify Trading Down to acquire additional picks and still gain a quality player....

"RB" is the "ONLY" position that merits the #4 pick....Trading down to end up with quality help for the "OLB" or "OT" would be a possibility....The "ONLY" other possibility I can see at #4 is Glostom if he were drafted as an "OLB" because of his versatility but I don't think that will happen with "McFab" on the board....Possible if we trade down though but I do NOT believe we will trade down....

“Trade Bait”

Coach Kiffin came out with a Press-Conference just before the NFL Draft….Why…

As most of you already know I have a habit of reading more into things than actually exist….So holding true to form I will now read into his comments from that press-Conference….

#1...It’s a “Smoke Screen” to discourage teams from trading up at #3 to get a shot at “McFabulous”….Ask your selves…Sense when would the Raiders come out and tip their hands just before the Draft….And….Kiffin has NOT cooperated with the “Mediot”s all season….Why would he start now unless it’s a “Puppet Show” and he is using them to his own advantage….He stressed that the “RB” position is way down the line and we need to address other areas first before we get to that position….Like specifically the “DL” which is where the Raiders have already committed most of their money during the off-season….How much more $$$$‘s are we going to tie up on one unit….

#2.…Trading Down….he said it was being considered very strongly so all should line up at the Raiders door-step and start making exuberant offers for the right to take their pick….When asked if the Raiders were content to just have 5 picks this year the answer was an abrupt “NO” with a very big smile….But when asked if there was a possibility of trading picks from next year he spoke very assuredly saying that was a much stronger possibility….When asked about offers he said there were several conversations but only a “FEW” serious offers….Offers for what…Our #4 pick or offers for our 1st pick in “09”….

#3.…Why would we trade ….He specifically stated it would be for a player who was available who they were very high on and felt he had enough value that they would be willing to give up the pick next year in order to have time to “DEVELOP” him this year….”DEVELOP”…Was he talking about developing a “DE”….”DT”…..”OT”….NOT likely….If we pick such a player with our only 1st round pick he better be able to come in and make an immediate splash right out of the gate….NOT be a player who we could develop for next year….

BUT…What if that player was in fact Glostom and he was drafted as an “OLB” who would need time to learn a new position….or time to “DEVELOP”….With his skill set and smallish size he may be better suited to “OLB” than to “DE” at the next level….He has tremendous speed and up-side potential….How would he look taking peoples heads off and blitzing off the edge as an “OLB”….Remember that is what Sam Williams was suppose to be when he was drafted as “OLB” when he played as a “DE” in college….He had the speed but not the up-side of Glostom….

#4.…The Trade….We send “CB” Fabian Washington to the “CB” needy “Patsy-Cheatster”s and our 1st round pick in “09” for their #7 and the 3rd round pick we traded to them last year….There is NOT a high quality “CB” in this draft that merit’s a top 15-20 pick….We make the trade if Glostom is still on the board at #7.…If not…We trade him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick but keep our 1st round pick in “09”…If we make the trade it’s specifically for a player who we will “DEVELOP” this year because he has such great value to us at a position of “NEED”….Like “OLB”….And a position where we have NOT already invested tremendous $$$$’s in the unit…

Well as I said I can read a lot into what Coach Kiffin spoke about….Now it’s “Wait-n-See” time….

At #4 the Raiders select “RB” Darren McFadden….

At #7 The Raiders select “OLB” Glostom….

PantyRaider‘s….“Pre-Draft-Fantasy”s!!!!!

Nation,i hope the pick is Chris Long if available, sorry Panty but we really don't need DMC.I know it's the glamour pick but we HAVE to stop the run in 08 or we're looking at a new Head Coach AND a new Def.Coach... cos they'll both be run out of town by big Al if we dont win more games than we lose after he threw his wallet on the table in free agency.I know i for one don't want that to happen and i would LOVE to see Chris Long in Silver & Black too.I will have everything crossed for good luck today and i just hope Atlanta and St.Louis play ball and the stinkin Chefs dont pull a trade up with one of them to steal Long...Howies son in red is not a sight i want to see twice a year..
Enjoy the draft today NATION and GO RAIDERS !!!!!

Run DMC should be on a platter for us at #4, The Rams have Jackson and the Falcons signed Micheal Turned, so he'll be there.
The Falcons or Rams will take Dorsey. The Rams might take SOH. The Falcons won't take a DE, because they have Abraham & Adams at DE's.
I'm with whoever said it on the RT's last post, we have a spent a ton of money on our d-line. Burgess, Edwards, Sands, Warren & Kelly. I have little hopes for them stopping the run, but enough is enough $$'s in one area. Live or die with those guys (same for DB). And we've spent a ton at WR, & QB. There are no sure things at LT in this draft, so O-lines out as well. That leaves:
1. Run DMC
2. Rivers or Groves as an impact OLB
3. Or I suppose Dorsey if he happens to still be there at #4 (Dorsey's a sure stud in the nfl)

RT, I couldn’t agree more... I would rather have quality over quantity. History and percentages are against success in later picks/rounds. If you look at our current roster of Raider draftees, I see only Curry as a starter picked after Round 3. And we’ve had more than our share of failures in the first three rounds (look no farther than last year with Q. Moses who was the 1st pick in Rd 3).

Let’s make a splash: SOH, Dorsey, McFadden, Gholsten...

Mel “bad hair day” Kiper says “Darren McFadden will give juice to an NFL team right away.”

Okay! I’ll bite! Pick Run DMc and let’s get this party started.

Are we all forgetting that there is a different person picking these days? Kiffin picked us FIVE possible starters last year, and all anyone remembers is Moses?

Trade down so we can use our best asset... Kiffin's drafting ability.

I'll take three starters over an over-hyped RB any day.

Name the last RB to carry a team to a ring... you can't do it.

SOH or TRADE DOWN!!!

Gary, that is such an easy challenge. I've told you before. Our last superbowl win. Without Marcus Allen, we don't win our third ring. And what about dallas and Emmitt? And I doubt all those Bills teams would have been in 4 superbowls without T. Thomas.

According to the ESPN desk jockeys this morning ...

The Rams are taking SOH which means the Blackbrids will take Dorsey.

The Raiders will be on the clock with these options:

1. Run DMc
2. Gholston
3. Trade down

I say take Run DMc and see how bad the Jets and Cowgirls REALLY want him. If it is a good package, trade Run DMc. If there isn't a serious offer on the table, keep Run DMc.

Just thought of something. Perhaps Al still has it. Maybe he really wants Run DMC, so that's why he's kept Rhodes, Jordan, signed Fargas & Bush... so someone like the Cowboys or jets don't rade up with the rams or Falcons. They think we won't take him.
If so, I take back 1/2 of what I've said about Al... this would be genius.

As opposed to all those defensive ends who alone carry teams to a Super Bowl?

This isn't an either/or equation.

We need to run the ball and sack quarterbacks and stop the run and pass the ball. That's what good teams do.

All this talk about championships is delusional. How about we do something we haven't done in five years, which is win six games. Let's do that first.

Let's also try something we haven't done in a while, which is score some points.

It's like all these folks who thought Barry Sims Jerry Porter still had upside, year after year, and who think that Fargas's best years are ahead of him. We've been starved for excellence for so long, we still think we're a few breaks away from the Super Bowl.

So many folks get on me for pointing out just how horrible things have gotten and keep telling me that it's all part of some convoluted rebuilding plan, then try to convince me that we're not rebuilding and that we're going to the Super Bowl this year or next.

Our red zone effectiveness has been nil. You can't win like that. Russell is a quasi rookie. Our receiving corps is solid but not remarkable. McFadden could make a big difference in this context.

McFadden, Bush, Russell and Miller could help us build a young foundation and identity that, as we continue to plug holes over the next few years, could eventually take us to the promised land.

Yes, RT.
I'm betting the Rams or Birds trade down though. The Cowboys want Run DMC and if not them, someone else wants him badly. Al's playing poker for him, but someone will pull out a straight flush, by moving up. Hell, they could probably get the birds or rams pick with as few as two draft picks.

I'm thinking Denver or Dallas moves up to the Falcons spot. If DMC ends up in denver that will crap my weekend.
Or the Falcons flop spots with the Jets and the birds still get their QB plus a draft pick. All they have to do is stay ahead of the Ravens.
I'm betting Mcfadden doesn't make it to #4.

I'd be happy with either Long, Dorsey, or McFadden. Much is made of the quantity of players we have at DT, but the same holds true at RB. As it stands there is no reason we can't trade a Warren or a Rhodes for a middle round pick during the draft. You can nit pick the negatives - Dorsey is an injury risk, isn't suited to play the nose position; McFadden fumbles too much, his legs are too thin - but there is no doubt that they are the class of the draft. I think any offer to move down has to be significant to pass on either of those guys. Quality over quantity indeed.

Bama... you are seriously saying that the last RB to carry a team to a ring was 23 years ago and that MAKES YOUR POINT?

RB's are simply not that important in the NFL anymore because the defenses are too big and fast.

I think Kiffin knows this, and luckily he and Al are making the decisions instead of everyone on this board.

Sounds like StL is taking SOH, so it's almost a certainty that McF will be on the board when we trade down, and everyone here will be calling Al an idiot.

I honestly think thats one of the primary reasons everyone wants McF... so they can be pissed when we pass him up... oh well. Off to the bar to watch me some drafting!

Good news, the media are already hating on this pick. From the SF Chron: "The Raiders, who start and end with Davis, decided outstanding talent trumped obvious need Saturday by drafting Arkansas running back Darren McFadden with the fourth overall pick of the NFL draft."

Ummm...We have an obvious need to score touchdowns, do we not?

We're averaging 1.25 offensive touchdowns per games over the past two years. In 14 games last year for the Vikings, Adrian Peterson scored as many touchdowns as our entire offense did in 2006.

McFadden will light a fire under this offense. Just watch.

Let the Russell/Run DMc Era begin with a serious ass whipping of the Donkeys on MNF!

Think of what our opponent's D now face ... if you stack the box to stop our run, our WRs face single coverage and a QB who can stretch the field.

If you play a straight up 7 man front, Run DMc makes 1 cut and zooms through the 2nd level.

The Raides offense should be a very explosive, unpredictable, multifaceted, diversified, balanced offense. Big plays and a higher scoring average are right around the corner gentlemen.

The 1st time Russell fakes a handoff to Run DMc and goes deep to Carter for a TD will be an electric moment and realization that the RAIDERS can score from anywhere on the field.

I hope everybody is right... I have to admit to being a bit disappointed in the pick, just because with the ZBS it seems as if Fargas/Bush tandem would have been fine in terms of rushing the ball.

I'm still very concerned about our ability to stop the run, and unless we do so our offense is never going to be on the field long enough to be so spiffy and minty fresh. :)

One more concern, and I readily admit to this probably being more of only watching Cal, and not seeing players outside the Pac10 but I've heard McFadden being compared to R. Bush. And R Bush been a bit disappointing in terms of running the ball. At least it seems he has been.

And I guess I don't understand resigning Fargas, unless Bush isn't healthy and then drafting McFadden. Fargas, Bush, McFadden... not sure how everybody is going to get enough touches to stay happy.

But then again I wanted Quinn over JRuss last year... and Brady can't even beat out Anderson for the starting job.

I love how the chiefs immediately responded to McFadden by taking Dorsey with pick #5.

Toni,
Not sure why it's called "3-Technique" but it is basically the DT spot that Sapp played. It's the strong side DT in the 4-3, with the other DT being the bigger, run stuffing "Nose Tackle".

Tommy Kelly is talking over for our 3-Tech spot which is his natural position so that's why Dorsey didn't make sense for us. We could've stuck Dorsey in at Nose Tackle but it would be a waste of his best skills.

RB's - As much as I like "Joe" Etchemandu it looks like he's the odd man out again along with Jordan. I think Rhodes stays if we keep 4 but not likely I suppose.

My spidey senses are telling me the Raiders will be on the clock early to mid 3rd.

There are a lot of good WR's on the board. One is bound to slip pretty far.

We are now into the 2nd round so it's about time to start seeing a trade or 2....The Raiders will move up at some point but I don't know when or how....

Kiffin said it was a strong possibility that we trade picks from next year to get players who are available this year so we have a year to develop them...He said it would not be trades just to get picks but to target specific players on their board....He mentioned the "OL" and I know they looked at the "WR"....

Now looking at our new back-field...

JaMarcus "QB"
Bush "RB"
McFadden "RB"-n- 3rd "WR"
Walker "WR"
Curry "WR"
Miller "TE"
5 on the "OL"....

Can you see some explosiveness in this group....Can you see the "D"s having fits trying to stop it...Versatility....Decoys...Play-Action...Screens....Reverses....Flea-Flicker....

PantyRaider...Most Exciting Backfield in the NFL!!!!

we had the third pick in the 2nd round and traded to washington, does anyone know who we got, or what we got for that trade; and who we gave up?

I am holding this blog personally responsible for this bizarre pick. Obviously Kiffin has been reading here.

lol. Well, when I am wrong, I am wrong.

I watched the Kiffin press conference and it salved some wounds. If he thinks he is that good to the point of trading UP for him, wow, thats good enough for me. It also appears they still have a lot of doubts about Bush. The most puzzling thing is the Fargas contract. It seems like a monumental blunder now.

Ok Panty... where are the McFabulous youtubes at? I will watch them now!

Thanks Psycho, that clears things up a bit.

I just never heard that term before. And hopefully your spidey sense is true, I'd really like the Raiders to take a player today.

Al and I play shuffleboard on Tuesdays. I told him it had to be McFadden.

Well, our day looks to be done.

I bet Al stays up to 4:00 AM as usual and works a trade to get into the early 3rd tomorrow. I expect by the time I wake up we'll have picked an O-lineman or WR.

Nate,
I think it was our 2nd round pick that was used to get D.Hall from ATL. So maybe they traded with WASH?

RT,
Please pass my wish list to Al next Tuesday. You've proven your opinion to be valuable in Alameda.

a) Tell Ryan to blitz a little bit.
b) Give me $2 million.
c) Please don't piss of Kiffin.

On Darren's Blog-Site is posted a picture of a kid from NY who McFadden worked with just prior to the NFL Draft at a Youth Camp....He was 12/13 shooting hoops and impressed "McFab" so I posted to welcome him to the "RaiderNation" as an Honorary Member....

It would probably mean a great deal to the kid if other fans followed up with the invitation...Just a little something to encourage a fellow athlete to continue in his pursuit of happiness and stay out of trouble...It's a personal thing but if you have it in your heart please send the kid a big welcome...

Great day Raider nation!! But as with Jruss last year.Reality sets in, and the Raiders now need to find a way to sign this guy. If i remember correctly last year's 4th pick got around 19 or 20 mil upfront. We need Run DMC to report to camp ON TIME!!!!

Can't wait!!!

All Kiffin needs to do now is figure out an offense that uses four RB's, and
a defense that uses 5 CB's, and we are all set!

This could work!

we are all gonna be glad that mcfadden is a raider. he immediately takes the pressure off of russell in his early development. we now have better options on offense. we can now score some td's. glad to hear that kiffin an al mutually agreed on the pick.

oh - and btw, i was an al fan for a day. :o)

the price of the contract mcfadden signs for it'll be worth it. we got 4 players for the price of 1.

a rb, a wr, a kr and an emergency qb. not to mention russell's new pal.

The NFL wants the Raiders to relocate. The Raiders bare half the fault for losing but understand the league really wants Al Davis out. The gameplan in '08 is to discourage fans from attending games by of course using the press to swell up anything negative coming out of Raiderland.
The Raiders have played 2 preseason games well and the press chooses to focus on Lane Kiffin as a defeated coach. If RaiderNation buys into the gameplan of tying to get the team to lose (i believe someone is inside sharing team information with the league and stirring up disunity) instead of letting the NFL and world know we love our team. Then those 3 businessmen who bought 20% of the club and are in cahoots with the NFL to move the club will probably be more confident they can steal Al's club because thats just what they are up to.
