The Magicians

By Raider Nate 75

I remember as a young kid, my dad was always freaking me out. One of his favorites was the "look I can pull my thumb off at the knuckle" hand trick. We've all seen it, and we've probably done it.

When he first married my mom, they had cabinets above their closet, and he would hide in these cabinets and jump down and scare the bejesus out of her. Yes, they're still married.

When I was seven, they took me to see a magician who did all of the classic tricks. Sawing a woman in half, making things disappear and reappear, card tricks, etc. I was amazed by all of this. Why? Because I could not understand that they were “tricks.” In my mind, it was real. At such a young age, what I perceived and saw was real, and I was too young to wrap my mind around the idea that it was staged, and that the magician wasn't really sawing the lady in half. My argument was, "What do you mean it wasn't real? I saw it with my own eyes."

I could understand movies being fake, because I went to Universal Studios a lot as a kid, and we would see stunt shows, and they would talk about the tricks they use on camera; but what I was seeing on stage with the magician was live, not on film. My parents would argue and argue and argue with me endlessly on the subject; but they couldn't get me to believe that it was fake because: a) I saw it with my own eyes; and b) they couldn't replicate the trick, or show me how it was done.

So what's the point of all of this? To me, this is what is going on with the Raiders this offseason. As has been mentioned, Lane Kiffin has not been seen by the media since the Combine. But as well, neither has Al Davis. All we have heard, and continue to hear, is how Lane is going to lose his job, and is going to lose it soon. This rumor has been printed over and over since January.

The media have been backtracking on their story that he was going to be fired before the Senior Bowl, and then Combine; and now it's the Draft. After that, it will be, "he is gone before camps." Some writers have already trumped everything in between, and said the blanket statement, "He will be gone before the next season." This is despite the fact that Lane (at the Senior Bowl), Caveman, and the Raiders' PR spokesman denying these rumors. Let's not forget, too, that Caveman was going to be fired; and that rumor started the Monday after the regular season ended!

This has left the Nation in an uproar of questions. Is this a smokescreen? Is it the truth? I'd normally believe it to be a smokescreen, but now local trusted writers are writing these rumors. I know I can't convince some of you that this is all staged, and a "magician's trick." What you perceive is what you believe, and what I perceive is what I believe as well. This is why I think it is a trick; all of these stories are based on "perception" and there is little facts to these things that we know. What's going on? Let's look at the facts:

1. The rumors of Kiffin's demise are still largely printed. They are rumors because nobody in the Raiders' organization is denying nor confirming these stories. They have in the recent month or so, but not since before the Combine.

2. Kiffin, Rob Ryan, James Lofton, Al Davis, Amy Trask, Tom Jackson, and Tom Cable are all still on the team page.

3. Nobody has seen or heard from Lane Kiffin or Al Davis since the Combine (and the comments by both were the same, "No comment").

4. For that matter, nobody has seen Rob Ryan since the Combine!

5. Kiffin interviewed Lofton, and was hired by Al Davis.

6. We don't know if Al and Lane were at the free agent signings we have made.

7. We don't know if Al and Lane are even involved in the negotiations; or just involved at the "approval" level.

8. We know that Lane is at the headquarters every day

9. We don't know what he is doing at the headquarters every day, but it is speculated he is throwing chairs in anger.

10. My guess is as good as your guess.

These are the facts that we know this offseason. They’re pretty broad. There is not one editor alive that is going to allow a story to be printed where the basis of these facts are the headlines. If the reporters, even the local reporters, were to print the headline "Nobody Knows What is Happening Inside the Raiders Organization," then all they are showing is they have failed their jobs, and their credibility as a "team reporter" becomes no better than yours or mine.

So they write stories with phrases like, "an inside source who chose to remain anonymous" or "someone close to the team with knowledge" or "an anonymous source close to the situation.” Again, all of these stories are based on perception, just like a magician.

Do I like what's going on? No. I think it is dividing the fan base, and I think it is hurting their image of “change.” I don't think it would be a big deal if we were winning, but we are not winning. I feel that these illusions of turmoil from within damage the overall image that we know where we are going and how we are going to get there. It creates doubt in the hope that we as fans have in a return to glory.

But I can't help to think of the immortal words of my dad when I was five: "Hey son, look at this. I can pull my thumb off at my knuckle."

Nate,

With all due respect to PantyRaider and the other guest takes, this was exceptionally well done. The magic show analogy was dead on.

With the press, it's all smoke and mirrors now days. As and example on the previous take I posted the following point to a comment by Blandarocked.

Monte Poole is still digging up the so called jacket flap. He's pointing to Kiffin not wearing a Raider Logo jacket while coaching at the Senior Bowl. Only problem is he said it was the "Super Bowl". Wish that it were.

As I pointed out then, and appearently must still do, Kiffin was wearing an Under Armor Logo jacket. It just so happens Under Armour was the MAJOR sponsor of the event. And, it was a Silver and Black Under Armour jacket.

These guys are really getting lazy.

The smoke and mirrors will only disguise the laziness so much.

You are 100% correct, your guess is as good as mine.

It's not just that, H. Looking to the other sideline, it appears that Mike Nolan wasn't wearing a team jacket either, but the UA jacket that Kiffin was wearing. However, Nolan was wearing a 49er cap. But Kiffin never wears a hat while he's coaching, except for the few occasions where he wears a visor (which isn't always).

I'll put it simply, a man who says that he thinks his team now has one of the most talented units in the NFL is likely going to be coaching for that team, and doesn't expect to get fired.

In the mean time, we signed a QB. This is what Wikipedia has to say about Erik Meyer.

"He won the 2005 Walter Payton Award, presented by The Sports Network to the top offensive player in NCAA Division I-AA football. His 166.5 career passing efficiency rating set a record for I-AA quarterbacks with at least 400 completions. In 42 games, he passed for 10,261 yards, with 84 TD passes against just 17 INTs. Posted 65.7 percent passing accuracy, completing 721-of-1097. His career interception percentage (1.5) also is a Division I-AA record. While at Eastern Washington, Meyer's favorite target was All Big-Sky Tight End Chris Cwik. The duo connected for a touchdown an NCAA record 78 times. Tight Ends coach Raz compared the duo to Montana and Rice. He also broke eight Eastern Washington career records, five single-season marks and one single-game mark. Meyer was sacked an NCAA low 2 times mainly due to stellar offensive line play and the pass protection schemes of Aaron Best. Meyer led Eastern Washington. He Also set the record for the Only College Quarterback Never To Get Laid during his tenure at Eastern Washington."

rt, totally right off the bat; i must've gotten under patsie boys skin with that one; especially with the "illusionist" analogy, which is what the patsie's championships are, an "illusion" to the cheaters they are.
h, thanks for the nice words. the mediots act is getting old to me. they come at it like they can reshape the whole world with their spin. they may fool the uneducated, like patsie boy, but they will never fool the educated. it is our job as the educated to balance their dribble with common sense and reality.
again, in the end, it is all about your perception, and how you want to view it; but at least you have the "option" of having clarity on both sides.

Nice follow up comment, too, Raider Nate. Carrying on, one of the things we repeated hear now days is how irrelevant Al Davis has gotten in the modern NFL world. Apparently young, star players don't agree. This is from D. Hall.

"One day (Raiders owner) Al Davis and I talked contract and football for 4-1/2, 5 hours. When I came out the coaches were like, 'Wow, you were in there with him all that time?' I was like, 'Yeah, man, but it was fun.' He's a football man, I'm a football man. I don't think at any one position a player of greatness hasn't played for him. He has a well of knowledge and I'm dying to pick his brain and learn about the business, the football side and the non-football side."

Take,

On your request to Bigboy (Desusions of Grandeur) in case you didn't get to read my response. He will dissapoint. It takes an IQ greater than that of a nat to write a cogent post.

Blanda,

The other thing Poole points to is no press conference after signing Hall. There hasn't been a press conference after a signing since Moss, and we all know how that one turned out.

And, correct me if I'm wrong since I don't buy the produce, but Under Armor doesn't make team logo clothing that I'm aware of. Plus you are correct, Kiffin is not a cap wearer.

Now, for Hall. Thus far he is talking the talk. He is saying the right things from a team standpoint. He even admitted to probably acting a bit immature last season. He also states he can't wait to get with Nnamdi to start discussing Raider coverage schemes.

Also, a warning when you here the rumors. Nnamdi cannot participate in OTAs until he signs the offer sheet or the new contract. League rules prohibit it.

My recommendation to Alameda is to get Nnamdi under contract ASAP. But, then again, they could have already negotiated the contract and are waiting for the first report to hit the streets about his attitude then, poof, a signing. More magic.

Great job....I did not know where it was going until late in the read....Your perception saw it as a "Magic Show"....Mine saw it as a "Puppet Show"....But we both see it as Pointless Unfounded Rumors Pimped by "Mediot"s who Know NO-Thing....

Something of interest....In "05" the "Mediot"s were pimping the fact that "X" CoachTurner had not been seen and was being kept hidden...And that year there was also speculation about Turner being fired....

Owner Al Davis' secretive ways make it difficult to determine what the team will do. Coach Norv Turner wasn't made available to the media for the second straight year leading into the draft, one of only a couple teams in the league not to have something formal with its coach.

Oh...And by the way just for Gary I will also post this comment from the article....

"I think as a rule we've always tried to go with the best player available, whether it's with the second pick of the draft or with the sixth pick in the second round," said Jon Kingdon, the Raiders' director of college scouting, referring to the selection of offensive lineman Robert Gallery second overall last year. "We just rank the players as we see them. It gets to be frustrating as you get there and keep crossing names off the board."

NOTICE....He did not say "MOST NEEDED POSITION"...But don't believe it when it comes right from the inside source....And by the way that is and has been customary as long as I can remember sense "62" when "AD" drafts....And you did not explain when and why you made the pick of "CB" in "05"....I'm still waiting...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3/25 Kevin Carter (DE) signed.

If we want to attract "FA"s next year without having to sell the farm to attract them we will absolutely need to have a winning season....Not to mention to save our coach so we don't have to start at square #1 again and again in the rebuilding process...

Next year "FA"s with the "RFA-F" tag who have not signed will be available....Here is the short list...

DE Jared Allen Fran. 4yrs 6-6/265 Kansas City

OLB Terrell Suggs Fran. 5yrs 6-3/260 Baltimore

DT Albert Haynesworth Fran. 6yrs 6-5/320 Tennessee

OT Jordan Gross Fran. 5yrs 6-5/300 Carolina

OLB Karlos Dansby Fran. 4yrs 6-4/240 Arizona

OLB Michael Boley RFA 3yrs 6-3/242 Atlanta

Don't think for a moment that "MrD" is not already looking and drulling...And not just because he is "Old"...

When Kiffin was hired we were talking about a 3yr plan...This is only his second year....The final pieces are on their way in "09"....This year we need to put points on the board and become a winning team again with a "ROOKIE" "QB"....now tell me the #1 need is NOT to give him as much help as possible by drafting the very best player available at the #4 pick....(You Know Who)....

The reason I picked "05" is because we traded that pick #7 for No-Moss and did not have a 1st rd pick until 4-23 when we traded with the Jets for the #26...

After that we traded away "CB" Buchanon for picks...So it was not until 4-24 that the predictions were all over the board that the Raiders would go after Fabian...Prior to that it was the "LB" and "DE" that was getting all the projections...And also "QB"-"OT"...

It's rather hard to believe that anybody knew where the Raiders were going prior to those trades...After all...We had no #1 nor did we have "CB" as our "Greatest Need" with Woodson-n-Buchanon on the roster...And Woodson had just signed a new contract...

Your boy had his pro day today-

With very windy conditions outside, workouts were forced indoors on field turf. Twenty-six teams were on hand, including Bears head coach Lovie Smith and coaches from the Packers, Panthers, Rams and Jets.

» RB Darren McFadden (6-1¼, 215): Had a 35½-inch vertical jump, 4.10 short shuttle, 6.86 cone drills, 13 reps in the bench press and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else. He had a good workout and did a good job of answering questions for the teams in attendance.

Here is hard core evidence to suggest that "D-Mac" as he is called by the "Ark"s will be a Raider....

As the highest-profile player in the upcoming NFL Draft, D-Mac is attracting corporate attention like he attracts linebacker attention on the gridiron.

McFadden was recently chosen as the coverboy for the upcoming Xbox 360 video game "NCAA Football 09. "That's a prestigious honor reserved for just a select few outstanding former college players - unless you count Joey Harrington.

Nike paid all of McFadden's pre-combine training fees, and rumor has it the shoe giant will be paying him a lot more than that in the near future. Before you know it, McFadden will be cranking out commercials at a Peyton Manning-like rate.

Now tell me please....Can you see our lovable "Media Attention Loving" owner passing on the opportunity to have such a high profile player on his roster....Come-On....NO other player in this class will draw the attention that "D-Mac" will bring home to us....the RaiderNation will have the "Poster-Child" of the "08" Draft....

I mean how many such players are currently out there....

The Manning Bro's at "QB"...
The "Brady-Bunch" of Cheatsters...
"NO-Moss"-n-"TO" have spoiled theirs...

Did I miss some body....

Can you really see "MrD" passing up the opportunity to have his....How long has it been sense we had that type of presence on our team....If "SOH" brings it..It will be years later just like his dad....

Expected Draft Placement

McFadden could go as high as first overall if the long-rumored deal between the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys actually comes to fruition, but that seems unlikely at this point. A more likely scenario has McFadden being the fourth overall pick by the Oakland Raiders. He would bring to that team the kind of offensive potential that owner Al Davis loves. However, the team has recently re-signed running back Justin Fargas and could look to fill needs on the defensive side of the ball. If he does drop past them, expect the New York Jets to pick him up at the sixth spot. Jets running back Thomas Jones is a decent player, but McFadden's big-play potential would likely be a hit in the Big Apple. Wherever he goes, don't expect him to fall outside of the top 10 picks.

The NFL Network - The price might be too high for the Cowboys to trade up in next month's draft to grab Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, according to The NFL Network.

Is seems as though the pair of first round picks that Dallas has aren't enough to move into the top five.

They might have to throw in their second-rounder, in addition to the two first-rounders, in order to land in the top five. Even then, there is no guarantee McFadden will be there when it's time for their selection.

Well, I see Littlewanker (AKA bigboy for the late tuners in) can actually spell words up to 4 letters in length. Since he missed my other typo, I'm withholding judgment on his ability with bigger words. Maybe, as Doc Holiday suggested to Ike Clanton in the movie Tombstone, we should have a spelling contest.

Take said "excessive profanity". An occasional profane word when attempting to make a point is acceptable. Shoot, I use a hell or a damn every now and then.

Also, typing in ALL CAPS is just an immature attempt to gain attention. Not to mention name calling.

Guys, with all the offseason changes moving us in a positive direction look for even more intellectually challenged attacks like Littlewanker. It comes from fear and jealousy.

He is right about one thing. This site is a clique which is defined as a “close group of friends or coworkers with similar interests and goals, whom outsiders regard as excluding them.” We are a clique of folks who like discussing all things Raiders. Raider Nate- Nicely done!

There is sometimes a far reach between perception and reality, however, I would argue that negative perception is almost never good. And to think the Raiders may have orchestrated it makes them look a little twisted.

I still believe that Lane Kiffin and what he brought to the Raiders last season could have perpetuated itself into very positive public relations for the Raiders (potentially having profound impact on fan relations, ticket sales, free agent signings, salary ramifications, etc). Somehow, or for some reason, that got turned upside down into a negative perception. Like many, I'm still trying to figure why.

Now, in a spending spree (potentially mortgaging our future), we want to ignore the initial signals that a problem(s) may exist.

Could it be that:

1) Al Davis is making his last big ("ALL-IN") splash in an attempt to complete his legacy, or

2) is Al going "ALL IN" to spite Kiffin, thereby, he's either going to assemble a winning team or make a fool of Lane Kiffin (if he can't win with an All-star roster). He may see this as a "win-win."

As a diehard fan, I want to be more positive, but I remain in a wait-and-see mode for now.

Hey Nate, maybe we should demand Take put in a spell check. Besides the "g" is silent (one of those quirks of the English language. Like words beginning with X are usually pronounced like they begin with a Z). At least he was intelligent enough to get my meaning.

It appears we have signed our "camp fodder" quarterback. Jeff Otis has signed.

NYRaider, it's been said all publicity is good. I don't subscribe to the theory, but I put it this way. If you come out and deny the published accounts and the media ignores you and continues the rumormongering, then why bother. Just go about your business and let your actions speak for you.

Just like last year...Al took the player who would draw the most attention in the draft....And all that extra for the hold-out time....If he takes "McFab" he will have a "Double Dose" because everyone will be watching to see how the "Rookie" QB-n-RB perform together...If he turns his team around in one season he will also get all that attention....Everyone will have to credit him for the moves to get it done....

Al's "Master Plan"....Go out in a "Blaze-o-Glory" or die trying...I love the man for that..."McFab" fills the bill bringing in the "Pub" and the Glory...

Brandon-da-Mule-Marshall...he was injured while throwing a "Mule" fit and put his "Hoof" threw a window which caused deep cuts in his front leg....Skip the costly surgery....Just shoot that "Lame" Mule and be done with it....

ShanaAss is hiding the cause of the injury...His team is becoming a "Prison-Camp" of Lawlessness....He gets to play Worden of "Mule High"...

Now we need someone to write the whole story and publish it at the "Donko-Post" paper in "Mule High"...

4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas *
The Raiders tend to gravitate toward players with eye-popping numbers, and McFadden certainly fits the bill with the 4.33 40 he ran at the combine. But there's much more to McFadden -- he works hard on every play, he blocks well, he is a good receiver out of the backfield, and he doesn't show frustration if he isn't getting the ball. He would be a great addition to the Raiders, and the idea of him in the same backfield with JaMarcus Russell should be exciting to the Oakland fan base.

It looked like a lock for Oakland to take a defensive tackle at this spot until the team surprisingly signed DL Tommy Kelly to a massive contract on the eve of free agency, with the announced play on him playing the DT spot vacated by Warren Sapp's retirement. And while the Raiders signed RB Justin Fargas to a new contract earlier this year, McFadden could easily land the starting running back job by the end of training camp or perhaps by mid-season.

#4 Oakland - RB Darren McFadden

Crazy Al Davis strikes again! Hurry, hurry, hurry; all cap space for the next four years must go! No guaranteed money deals refused! Despite having Echemandu, Justin Fargas, Mike Bush, LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes on the roster, I fully expect Oakland to draft McFadden. Davis loves offensive playmakers with speed and DMac fits the bill perfectly. Look for LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes to be given their walking papers if this happens.

Check out CJ's blog on Gholston. His combine and performance numbers, especially compared to the other D linemen, are compelling.

If AD picks him it looks like AD fills a need and also satisfies his craving for the "looks good getting off the bus" athlete.

Not to mention making Gary happy too! :-)

My problem is Clemons leaving made DE a more acute need. Burgess is probably not happy with his salary and I would hate to see Aso go the way of woodson...

"What really matters, in the final analysis, is a team’s ability to create a “culture of winning”, one which than attracts quality players and not merely mercenaries. This, sadly, is the prime area in which the Raiders have been deficient in recent years"

Not my quote but I like it....The reference is to the endless debate whether the Raiders should draft for "Need" or "Best Player Available" or "Trade Down"....

Whoever we do finally draft it will still take good planning from the coaches and front office to put the player in a position to contribute to wins.....I still believe many "PB"s are "Made" by the system and conrad's they play with....NOT just on who they were....But some are different and such great players that they would excel anywhere they played....Barry Sanders-n-Walter Payton types....

I just personally think "McFab" is that type of player....The type of player who will make everyone around him better....That has the ability to elevate the game of the players around him and against him....A "Spark" or a fire that burns and can't be put out....That was the "Greatness of the Raiders" in the past....We had that element on our team from several sources....

I wasn't chastising you about your comments on Marshall, just correcting the reference to the injured part of his anatomy.

Here's the bottom line on whomever we pick. They are not and will not be a "can't miss" prospect.

On average a first rounder becomes a fairly servicable player. Sometimes a first rounder has to catch on to a second or third team before they finally realize their full potential.

In the end, it's a crapshoot.

Panty, I think you have Al all wrong, but that's okay. I don't think Al always goes for the most high profile player. In fact, when Al makes his first pick most people usually go, "who?"

Al's first pick is based on a formula. First consideration is need, then they weigh that against skill at the position, then the intangibles. If they have a need, but no draftees at the needed position are rock solid, Al will go with one who is solid at another position. Intangibles only take precedence at the bottom of the draft.

Our two primary needs are (right now) defensive line (primarily DE) and OLB. Al also needs more draft picks. Therefore, Gholston is the obvious choice if the Raiders use that #4 overall pick. If they decide they need more draft choices (which I think likely), they'll trade down to get them. If that happens, they'll go OLB. In both instances they have players with solid skill sets at their position that they can draft.

Hmmmmm! I don't see Al that way "IF" there is a spectacular player on the board that he really loves...And that's the difference last year and this year...

We had "QB"s and it was a need but taking "JRus" was a Luxury because he was not expected to come in and start immediately....He was NOT drafted for immediate help....After we had him we went out and signed a "PB" "QB" to play that season....Culpepper....And it was not only because of the Hold-Out...Our NEED was "OL"..."WR"..."RB"...We thought our "D" was alright....

Al loved the player and "JRus" was drafted #1....If Al loves "McFab" he will become a Raider regardless of other needs....Those other needs can be addressed next year but that spectacular player will no-longer be available....I believe we are still looking at a 3yr plan....I posted the "RFA"s who will most likely be "FA"s next year..."DE"-"OLB"-"OT"....They will complete the puzzle and NOT be a high risk of being "Bust"s like in the draft...But Al will take what's available Now and get the rest later....

Al could settle this whole issue by simply having a press conference. The problem is, he doesn't like to do press conferences, and so he will probably not have one until much later. He is the type of person who doesn't care about public opinion, since he is confident of his own ability to understand the situation far better than others, especially outsiders. He has gotten into this position before (Marcus Allen is an example)and by remaining largely silent allowed people who know little to stir the pot to great effect. It is a personality characteristic of his that might be faulted, but remember, great men believe in themselves and to a great extent go their own way. The result is a cacophony of voices that are loud but generally ignorant (in spite of their fervent protestations to the contrary)when it comes to what is really going on with the Raiders. And much of what goes on never comes to light, so people tend to dwell on things. It is what it is.

Follow-up from my last post..."TE" was also need...

Last year there were 3 such players on the board but we could only pick (1) so we passed on the "WR"-n-"RB" and drafted the "QB"....The other 2 would have given immediate help last year but Al went for the future and a "QB" of that Magnitude is not available later....Who could ever throw 40yds from their knees....Why that was Un-Heard-Off until "JRus"....

So what sets "McFab" apart from the rest...Why is he that Spectacular player that Al can't resist...

He is a talent all his own but is compared to others who had 1-2 elements of his game that stood out..Barry Sanders "Feet"..."BO"s Combination of "Speed-n-Power"...Eric Dickersons "Straight-Line-Speed"-n-"Stand-Tall" running Style..."LT"s "Versatility"-n-"Arm"....But all this is in one package with size who could get bigger-n-stronger in the Pros's....

His Up-Side is off the charts..."RB"-"WR"-"QB"...Not sense "BO-Knows" have we had that element in the Raider Camp....

Elevated Game...

How many times have we seen a team smell blood and come-on late in a game....Believe in themselves and pull out the win...Reach down inside and bring something out that we didn't know was there...And what "Sparked" it...Both the "O"-n-"D" come alive....Did we see that in the "SB" this year when the "Midgets" pulled off the Up-Set....Against all odds....They elevated their game as soon as they entered the Play-Off's as a Un-der-dog "Wild-Card".....

Have we seen our Raiders "Flat" and unable to do any more than go threw the motions as if they know we are "Losers"....They don't smell blood like in the old days...They don't get-up at the end of a game...Where will that "Spark" come from....

There are also other players in this...Unless you believe the "HC" has been stripped and Al wont listen....Who do you suppose Kiffin is "Pimping" in Al's ear..."OT"-n-"RB" No Doubt....And we don't even know if the Raiders are impressed with the second rated "DE" who has climbed the boards because "DE" "SOH" will be gone at #1 and he fills needs on teams at the top...So is "SOB" even in Al's other ear....

Honestly....Which way would you expect that "Poor Offenses-Less Senile OldMan to go while having Wet-Dreams of his "RB" leaving everyone in a cloud of dust on his way to the End-Zone"....

You are at the Car-Lot and for the same money can have a nice comfortable sedan which runs at 120mph in 10 seconds...OR....that quick little sports car that has the same speed but gets there in only 3.33 seconds....Which one would you rather drive...

1st to convert players from “HB” to “TE”….”QB” to “WR”….”LB to “RB”….

1st to develop team speed….Develop the vertical game….The dominate pass rush saying The “QB” must go down and he must go down hard…Man coverage scheme while violently chucking the “WR“ to disrupt his rout and timing and using “Stick’em“ as a weapon….Student body left….Approach the game the same as you would approach a battle in war….

A team in the image of it’s owner who is too damn proud to settle for second in anything if he has a choice….And too damn proud to draft the 2nd best player at any position behind a competitor if he has access to the best at a position that helps his team win….There will NOT be 2 “DE”s taken within the first 4 picks of the “2008” NFL Draft as long as Al Davis owns that pick….

One of the primary problems I see with drafting McFadden is Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin seems very content with a somewhat pedestrian backfield of Fargas, Rhodes and Bush. Many of you have stated as much in saying Kiffin wanted Fargas back. Moreover, a pedestrian backfield works in ZBS. We saw that last year with our #6 rated rushing attack.

Just the thought of drafting McFadden leads me to question whether Davis is force-feeding Kiffin with players like D.Hall, and will he continue to do so with players like McFadden?

Kiffin doesn't impress me as a coach that prefers flashy players, particularly over obvious needs at other positions.

I’m trying to figure out a couple of things.

Firstly, the reference to a “pedestrian backfield”. When drafted one of the primary things noted about Fargas was his speed and quickness. Shifty and elusive, no, but fast, yes. Among his negatives was his injury problem. On several occasions last season he was a step away from breaking one all the way.

Secondly, a pedestrian backfield works best with the zone blocking system. This is not true either. The ZBS requires trust on the part of the running back. Trust that the hole will be there. The ZBS requires the linemen to out quick the DL, not out muscle them. The hole, when there, closes rapidly. Primarily so the linemen can release and get down field for additional blocks.

It requires a back that is quick to the hole and doesn’t mind contact. Sometimes the hole is not there so hard contact at the line is inevitable. The back has to have the mindset to get up and trust the hole will be there the next time.

Remember how Jordan had those good games last year. Then, after coming back from his back injury he would hesitate and dance around only to be tackled for a loss. He became pedestrian, waiting for the hole to get larger. Prior to that he would take the ball and hit the hole. What happened to him mentally I don’t know, but he was totally different after returning to the lineup.

I'm beginning to think about a trade down. Kiffin was brought in because of his knowledge of college players.

Now that we have "attacked" free agency as Kiffin wanted, we need a few more draft choices to utilize this knowledge before he is away from the college ranks too long.

Wow... 86... him fron our plans please. His performance in the two BCS championship games should be enough to remove him from comsideration.
And I still think we love C Long too much because of who his dad is. Virginia didn't play anybody worth a crap and when they did (Texas tech & Va Tech) they got beat-- Va Tech hung 30+ on them. And this article says Long JUST recently showed pass rushing ability. We should have taken Carter... and/or Rucker in FA instead of yet another *&^%$# cornerback. I like a LT, or Quenten Groves or Mcfadden as our pick.

Maybe so Panty, but I’ve changed my mind, but not on drafting McFadden. I stated previously that the wild card in our drafting was Miami. I have changed my mind. It’s Michael Bush.

I've done some research and if Bush is back, and the coaches and front office are in agreement on this, then we don’t need McFadden. Bush is a faster, shiftier Tyrone Wheatley in running style. Bush went to Louisville partly as a quarterback candidate and was actually listed on the depth chart at the position at one time. He throws a nice halfback pass. He is a good receiver out of the backfield. He runs with power and good speed for a big man.

From an athlete standpoint, he played five different positions in high school.

In my somewhat humble opinion, Bush is closer to Bo than McFadden. Bo was a decathlon champion in high school. Bush may not have the pure speed Bo had or McFadden has, but he's no slouch. And, he can move the pile when needed on short yardage, something McFadden is NOT known for.

It remains to be seen if he has regained all his skills, but that is in the coaches hands. I just feel the money would be better spent in other areas.

Weaknesses: He struggles to get off blocks against a bigger opposition. He has a tendency to wear down as a game goes on and is a bit streaky when it comes to his sack total. Gholston, if he plays in a 4-3 defense at the next level, will have to improve his run defense to become a complete DE.

Speaks very very loud to me....I just can't imagine this guy going before the top talent at "OT"-"RB"-"DT" if the #1 "DE" is taken early...He has climbed the boards because of team need at the top end and his work-out and body looks....I would project his earliest pick at #5 to "KC" who have a "PB" "DE" "RFA" who they may loose next year....

Personally I don't know. The only game I watched with him in it was the BCS game.

I also read where SOH was constantly double and triple teamed this year. Once again, I didn't see every game.

I just hope the scouts do their job this year and we come away with a player that improves the team. Personally, I would like to see us trade down and pick up at least one additional first day pick.

I watched most of that game and SOH was constantly double teamed. If we are switching to the 3-4 (if there is a lawd) what more could you ask for?

And as far as Gholston weak against the run, perhaps this might be because he has played a whopping two years of organized football?

I'd prefer SOH, but Gholston's upside might be immeasurable.

Actually I'll trust Kiffin on this also... any of the D lineman I would be happy with.

And while we are at it, let's trade for LT so we have three similar RB's?

I don't think this team is in any "luxury pick" status. I'd bet good money even NE wouldn't pick him if he were available.

I might take that bet....If you go to the Jets web sights that's their biggest fear is "NE" trades up and gets that bad ass boy...."NE" is in the market for "RB" and I was hoppin we could trade Jordan and get our 3rd rd pick back....

There is a huge chance that the Birds" at #3 trade down....They now have 3-#2's -n- 2-#3's....A trade with Dallas would give them....

2-#1's....4-#2's....3-#3's....Now could you imagine what they could do for their team in one year with that line-up....That's my biggest fear is the "Birds"....In which case you will be right and the Raiders will draft "DL"....

Gary- Gholston has only played two years of organized football? Is that what we want to risk the 4th pick of the draft on in order to fix our run woes? Might as well put your house payment on "16" on a roulette wheel while your at it.
I like SOH too, I'm just trying to separate how much of the hype around him is related to his dad. I mean, is he really a mid to late 1st round talent instead of a top 5? How much does his dad help his draft status?
I'd have rather fortified the d-line with FA'a, instead of dumping a bunch of cash on an elite CB. I mean how does a 70 million $$ Cb fix our run woes?
I would have rather picked-up a few tough dlinemen and/or an OLB. I'd much rather have Rucker, Carter & Spikes right now for 70 million dollars. If we did I'd bet anything we'd a MUCH better defense this fall.
I like Hall, but he'll basically be earning all that money tackling runners in the secondary because of our weak, unphysical front seven.

DE Derrick Harvey is rated higher than Vernon Gholston....And in their ChampionShip game he totally out played him...

2006: Saw action in all 14 games for the Gators…Named Defensive MVP of the BCS National Championship Game…Collected second-team Coaches’ All-SEC plaudits on Dec. 5…Tied for second in the SEC with 11 sacks…Each of his 11 sacks came in the Gators’ final 11 games…Registered a career-high three sacks and recovered a fumble deep in Ohio State territory to spur the Gators to a 41-14 win over the Buckeyes in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game; finished the contest with four total tackles.

Darren McFadden....

Best RB to enter the draft in the past two decades. Is a big explosive athlete, who showed excellent quicks & moves in the hole. Breaks secured tackles and finishes his runs. Judges distances well & showed real talent at the corner. Good backside vision & the ability to take it to the house. Can evaporate the pursuit angle with his great burst. Excellent hands & was extremely dangerous in space. A difference maker in every sense of the word.

He shattered the UA record for all-purpose yards in a season by 454 yards with his total of 2,058.

"WR"...

OK....We need help at "WR"....Line him up as the #3 "WR" and he will instantly draw double coverage and we have Bush in the Back-Field...Send him deep and the coverage will go with him which will open up everything underneath and the Run...Even when he does not touch the ball he is still a "Decoy" who draws coverage away from the play...

We have both players in the game at the same time and "McFab" lines up all over the place..."Wide-Out"..."Slot"..."HB"...."End-Around"...Flea-Flicker"..."Reverse"..."HB-Pass"....He is a threat to throw the ball and a "TD" threat anywhere on the field....

Hell....I just saw him throw a "TD" to Bush...WoW! What a play!!!

You need to calm your nerves. I suggest some nerve tonic. Preferably one from the brewery/distillery/winery of your choice and a long nap. That usually works for me.

H- you're taking my last post out of context.

I said "... a pedestrian backfield works in ZBS." (Our #6 rushing attack proved that.)

You referenced the above by implying I said "a pedestrian backfield works best with the zone blocking system." Obviously, that's not what I said.

You said- "Remember how Jordan had those good games last year. Then, after coming back from his back injury he would hesitate and dance around only to be tackled for a loss. He became pedestrian, waiting for the hole to get larger."

Clearly, we disagree on the definition of pedestrian. IMO, Jordan was pedestrian before the injury, then useless afterward.

My point is simply that we don't need an elite RB to run successfully in a ZBS. I would not classify Fargas, Rhodes or Bush as elite RBs. These guys are pedestrian. Because they know how to hit a hole quickly doesn't change that, under my definition.

Panty- I don't understand you're reference to Leinart and Bush in your 10:47 post.

Regardless, one of the biggest attributes you give McFadden is actually one of his biggest weakness according to the critics... his physical play after initial contact.

He is said to go down easy after contact. Also, look at his combine strength numbers. He is said to bench 225 lbs only 13 times, and his lower body is weak by comparison (I'm just repeating what I've read).

My guess is that you can bench 225 more than 13 times.

Remember to watch for strings pulling on his arms & legs. Look in the background for Al Davis throwing his voice. And if he starts throwing things and cussing, just turn off your TV and assume he's going to Arkansas. If he has a black eye it was probably from Rob Ryan.

And you seem to be under the impression that there are sure things in the draft or something.

ALL draft picks are a crap shoot.

While I'm sure that Panty is taking this as proof positive we're going after Run DMc, I tend to think, when coupled with another article on Raidernews.com, that the Raiders will go OLB with that first pick.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting (via PFT) that the Oakland Raiders have signed free agent defensive end Kalimba Edwards, formerly of the Detroit Lions

Nice pick up for us. Edwards comes in at a cheap price and may give us options and provide us much needed depth.

If Burgess decides on not coming back unless we sign him to a fat contract, then we solved one problem. I love Burgess, but I want us to use the money on Aso. instead. Either way, we are making head way.

Does this mean we take DMC?
Does Al know something about we don't?

hi guys,
been a while. so how's everyone been? i've been very busy with my final classes and getting ready for graduation. also getting ready to leave the country for asia for a couple of weeks. still working on my internship though....

you all know my stance re: the old man. i've been pretty harsh. although i'm still not happy about january's escapades and some of the signings were questionable with regards to injury history, i am willing to admit that 1) at least the old man is spending money (a LOT) to make our team more competitive and 2) with all these additions man, he sure is making it hard to stick with that boycott isn't he?

so there. a lot of if's but the defense looks set for now. that being said - to me, our one and only pick the first day of the draft looks like it'll be mcfadden. assuming he's available.

Anybody care to guess at what Kiffin might say at the pre draft press conference?

My bet is that he tries to discuss all of the Davis/Kiffin/Ryan rumors as little as possible. He'll simply say that there's often a nugget of truth in most things that are reported, but all of these rumors were way overblown. He'll go on to say that all staffs have disagreements, and that's all that ever happened at Raiders HQ. If further questions come up, he'll say, "I really don't want to spend anymore time on that, because it's not important. I'd rather spend the time on what we can expect to see going forward."

Of course, Timmy Kawakami and Nacy Gay will continue to ask the burning rumor questions to show that they are "tough investigative reporters."

then he'll give a big "FU" to the media and there love-mongering rumors. it won't be anything "news worthy" so the rumors will continue to fly.
i just hope a mediot has the brains enough to ask him about the "rumors" of cable and knapp leaving for seattle after this season, and that he addresses that rumor.

I made the reference to the "QB"-"RB" at USC as being "Flashy" players....Also their "WR"s were "Flashy" in college but do nothing in the Pro's....Now their best in recent years has signed with the "Donko"s....They can't attract anything else...HEE! HAA!...

"McFab" runs hard between the tackles and is very difficult to bring down when he is running with power...But it seems that when he kicks in the "AfterBurners" and is running for speed he is more vulnerable if you can catch him....So I have seen where a "Mediot" has taken a few playes where this has happened and he is playing them to make "McFab" look weak....

If you read around what is said by the players and coaches who went against him they tell a totally different story....So I personally put very little importance in that (---) comment that is cropping up...After all...You could take any "RB" who has ever played and pick out a film or two where he went down easy and say he is "Weak"...Even "BO" had his bad plays....Just look at the one against Cinn where he got hurt....His foot was hit and he went right down....Could not stop all that momentum....

Panty, I'm not really against picking McFadden, it's just that I don't believe the Raiders will make that pick. And you're right that there isn't a OLB suitable for the #4 overall pick. (Note, however, that Al will sometimes take a player too high if he doesn't think that player will still be there for the next pick.)

That's why I think Davis will trade down with a team who is frothing to get McFadden. Then he'll pick an OLB.

The reason I wouldn't pick McFadden is because we are coming perilously close to having something we haven't seen in Raiderland in some time. DEPTH. It seems to me that our choices are building a complete team right now, or signing McFadden.

NYRaider,

Ok, I understand. I take "pedestrian" to mean slow. And, while the back doesn't have to be elite, they do have to be quick to the hole. With the ZBS the linemen do a quick double team on one of the DLs then one has to peal off to take on the LB.

Lot's of quick decisions have to be made. That's why Jordan looked so bad. He stood there and got tackled.

Blanda, I agree. Depth. Solid depth. If someone goes down, you need a solid, if not spectacular, replacement.

Gary, I'm not pissed off about everything. I'm pissed off at every year trying to gameplan a defense around the CB's and gameplan the offense around the "7 yard drop, bombs away 1968 Lamonica shuffle". Kiffin has 86'd the Lamonica deal on the offensive side, so I am optimistic about the offense now. See? Get out of the Al/Walsh offense and even Gallery looks decent. Even Fargas looks decent. So now all that is left is to get Al off the D side of the ball. Tall order. Is Al running the D? When you spend close to 100 million for your CB's, you can bet your ass Al is running that side of the ball. So stupid. The fingerprints are a definite match.
Who in the 21st century thinks that you solve a perinially stale run defense by "bringing in two shut down corners so everyone else is free to wreak havoc'? What defensive mechanic comes up with that diagnosis? Al Davis.
Kalimba Edwards is a decent move. A physical player. He is officially the second best DE on our roster, but he is basically another Burgess or Clemmons. I like the move, but we need more.
SPIKES PLEASE. Then I'll give Al props.

blanda, that is precisely why i feel that he will make mcfadden his choice. davis must make a huge splash with this ONE pick. you figure the defense is taken cared of. now its time to get that offensive impact player. the guy who will take a load off russell's shoulders. the guy who'll make everyone else on offense a better and more effective weapon - mcfadden. rhodes, fargas and even bush are not mcfadden. rhodes or fargas will get us a few yards here and there but this guy will bust many long td runs. rhodes and fargas are trade bait while mcfadden is the elite back we've been waiting for. russell can take his time developing. all he'd have to do is turn around and hand the ball off 70-80% of the time.

H- I like our chances with Fargas, Rhodes and Bush; and it's quite possible there is an elite RB hiding in this group.

This leads to my central point for the past several posts; I would rather we didn't spend our #4 pick on a RB, even if his name is McFabulous.

With his "ALL IN" approach, I believe Al is capable of trading up in this draft. Hard to say where he'd get the money to do that, because he lost me about 3 deals ago when it comes to $$ and the salary cap.

I do know, to help sign our #4 pick, we can sign Nnamdi to a long-term deal and dump Jordan. Those two moves would be worth well over $5.0 mil in 2008 cap space.

Jeff, it's true! I just looked under Raider transactions. This was one of Ryan's first Frankenstein LB projects.

Two possibilities:

1) They are definately going 3-4 this year, and Biamila is going to be an outside LB in the 3-4 scheme.

2) He's going back to DE as he was used in San Diego, and the Raiders plan a defensive line by committee, readily doing situational substitutions.

If the correct answer is #1, I see McFadden in our future. If #2, then I still say that Al trades down, and goes OLB with the first pick.

9:20 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard someone on ESPN radio say that nobody wants to trade up because the rookie contracts are getting too outrageous and that many teams in the top ten are desperate to get out of their pick because they are such cap-busters.

Plus nobody thinks there are any blue-chip QB's (the only reason a team would want to trade up).

If true.. and Al is going further "all in" we might actually see a trade up instead of a trade down.

Bama,

The seven step drop bombs away approach, was NOT the primary focus of our offense. It may have been during Shell/Walsh, but historically we utilized power running to open up play action. Then we used short and intermediate passes to Casper/Christensen/Biletnikoff types. This drew in the safeties for the quick strike.

It was the primary offense utilized with Stabler, Plunkett and even with Hostetler. We are going back to that. With Miller and Curry we have the short intermediate types with Walker we have the deep threat.

Al Davis has always felt you built your defense around your corners. Always. He feels if you can lock down the opponents receivers with single coverage it frees up others to reek havoc elsewhere.

It's actually a good strategy, but those types of corners are few and far between. Which makes having two even more difficult.

I will admit he has tunnel vision on the CB's, but on offense stretching the field, and it's threat does open things up elsewhere. Just as running helps your passing, the deep threat opens up the short routes and the middle to create more first downs.

It's balance. Which is what I think he is going for this off season. Balance on both sides of the ball.

Things are usually pretty slow around Raider Clique on weekends so I poached a few items from WFIB that should liven things up:

Here's one for laughs-

BSPN's John Clayton reports the signing of DE Kalimba Edwards clears the path for DL Tommy Kelly to move to defensive tackle for the Raiders. Kelly signed a seven-year, $52.5 million contract before the start of free agency with the thought he would move from defensive end to defensive tackle. Over the past week, the team had serious thoughts about re-signing one-time Raider DT Grady Jackson. Had that happened, Kelly could have stayed at end. Signing Edwards takes the Raiders out of the defensive line market unless the team wants to draft one.

Serious thoughts I'll have you know- unlike what clayton is capable of....

The Raiders are out of the d-line market unless they don't want to be. Got that...

This is from another good poster from that site. His "friend" knows some of the DBs on the Riaders. Everything after this sentence is his:

"My friend asked a few direct questions regarding Kiffin, Russell, Bush and the rumored Huff and Fabian trades,

FWIW, the general feeling is that Kiff is doing a good job and Al needs to let him coach.

Russell is going to be fine this year. Bush looks good and should be the starter before the season ends. The Raiders have a great team and they'll do well this year.

Huff's chances of being traded are slim, but Fabian is as good as gone. He has no desire to be a dime back on ANY football team and with Hall, Nnamdi at 1 & 2, with Routt having the inside shot at the nickel spot, Fabian most likely will not be back in Oakland next season. (which is a big reason why I think we will match the offer sheet Tennessee gave Carr)

He likes the team, but he's a player and he doesn't want to wait for a four WR set."

I think having depth in the "D" back-field is a good thing...Keep guys fresh and you never know when you will have to play a team like the "PussyCats" who have TOOOOO many quality "WR"s and run your legs off....Fabian has the speed-n-talent but just needs to become more effective and consistent...This is his 3rd year and it was Awesome's 3rd year when he came into his own so there is still hope....With him feeling the pleasure he may commit himself more this season....Let's hope so anyway....

Edwards had 2 sacks against the Raiders in the 1st game last year...Al-n-"SOB"-n-Kiffin no doubt remember him very well...As was suggested by another he may just have been hard to motivate regularly in Detroit but in OakTown he may be smelling blood more often and really getting after it....Word is when he is motivated he is unstoppable...Could be a very good addition....

"D" suddenly looking pretty good....In the draft it will be time to address the "O"....You all know who....

Raider00, Kalimba's a tough football player, I have no problem with it, other than he is a Burgess/Clemons type. He's much better than Brayton & Richardson though, so it's a good signing. I wish we had more though.. like Spikes.
As for the draft, does anyone know where Pat Sims of Auburn is projected to go. He's a big DT that's probably every bit as good as Dorsey & Ellis, just wasn't on a team vying for the national championship.
I still think Al takes Calais Campbell... or perhaps a LT.
I'd like to mention a homeboy, Marcus Howard.. a very physical defensive player from Georgia that could play OLB in the NFL and could be had in a later round.

Jay Richardson

In 2006, he chalked up 25 tackles and four sacks...Played in all 16 league games and started in 11 during his rookie season.

Still just a learner and may yet come on to be a fine "DE" for a 5th rd selection....Now will play back-up role if Edwards comes on...The presence of these players allows Al to draft for other needs or "Desires" on "O"...

Rushing title coming soon to the RaiderNation and possible "PO" run....

I feel a change in the wind says's I....There is an old familiar "Chill" in the air...Could it be the resurgence of the long lost "AutumnWinds"....

With all of the signing of d-linemen, one might not expect Al to draft a d-lineman in the first round. But Al is certainly capable of surprising people, and he's been known to acquire GOOD players for the sole purpose of pushing potentially GREAT players.

A great story from Raider history is rookie Stabler marching into Madden's office and demanding to start. Madden told him, "Son, nobody is going to give you this job. If you want it, you have to go out and take it."

I am excited about the future and what it holds, it seems to me that Kiffin is a lot smarter than a lot of mediots give him credit for and like many of you have said he was brought in here to do a job and no matter what he is going to finish it or at least leave it manageable.

Ok folks, some clown named Dan Parr at Pro Football Weekly wrote the following.

"And let’s not forget the standoff between Davis and head coach Lane Kiffin, which is becoming downright bizarre. Davis tried to force Kiffin to resign after the season when he found out that the head coach had shown interest in college coaching vacancies at Michigan and Arkansas only months into his tenure."

Now, first of all the above sentences are written and structured as if the words are fact and irrefutable. The problem is absolutely zero of what he is reporting has been confirmed. In fact, some of it (the college jobs) has been denied.

I think the down right bizarre part is they don't like the fact that they can't get a rise out of Kiffin or Davis. Neither will bow down to mighty alter of the media.

Not once did the so called reporter use the word "rumor" or the words "it was rumored". And, it was all rumored.

At some point these idiots will need to start revealing their sources or they will loose what credibility they have remaining. Because they keep repeating the same crap over and over and absolutely zero of it has come to fruition.

H, have to agree with you on the article referenced. Pretty shoddy writing. Who is this anonymous "evaluator" that describes Hall as such a worthless cornerback? I mean I'm not crazy about paying a CB that much money, but even I will admit that Hall is a pretty good CB. To act as if he gets toasted all the time and is a lousy CB seems shoddy journalism.
Different subject... does anyone think that with the signing of Edwards we can all forget about the 3-4 ideas? Edwards and Burgess are not 3-4 dlineman unless we were going to go through the Brayton/Irons "try 'em at LB" thing again. If we're not moving to a 3-4 and we have Joseph, Tommy Kelly, T sands & Warren on the rosters as DT's, then we're surely not taking a DT in Rd 1 either. That leaves DE or LT as the primary needs of a rd 1, #4 pick. Unless of course we go with Run DMC. SOH will be gone by the time we pick.
That leaves:
Campbell
J Ryan
Run DMC
Gholston

H-

I think the problem is no one outside of us holds the media to account. There is never a retraction of a bogus report. And it also seems editors don't exist. Another factor seems to me the east coast center of the sports media vs. the west coast.

What I find frustrating is trying to refute any of this bogus media talk with other fans as;
1) most who know me know I think conspiracy first
2) for the most part the guys I know rely on one sports news source for most of their info outside their favorite team - bspn.
3) until the Raiders start winning they will be looked on with smirks and snickers.

I know that the Raiders (AD) love to perpetuate this outsiders image, and also created some animosity with the main stream press in so doing, but from around 1999 until the SB these A-holes were fawning over Gannon, Rice and Brown among others.

I would love to see the Raiders win this year and continue the media blackout.

11:24 AM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

H, the problem with that is that coaches are required to hold post game news conferences by the NFL. But there is no reason why Kiffin has to answer questions he's already answered.

i.e., a reporter asks, "Did Davis ask for your resignation when you proposed firing Rob Ryan?" And Kiffin says, "That question was addressed last February. Let's move on to current business."

Bama7, if you look at may of the d-linemen we have, they are flexible between positions. Kelly can play inside or outside. Both Burgess and Biamila are capable of playing out of a three point stance or standing up. Edwards can play inside or outside. Both of our safeties have the ability to play both nickle and dime.

I think what were seeing here is the emergence of a 4-3/3-4 hybrid where opposing teams can't identify what we are going to do based on our personnel out on the field.

This is one of the reasons I think we might trade down for an OLB. But we may not need the LB if they are doing what I've suggested. Thomas can cover the run on first downs, and Williams has the ability to drop down as a DE. He was a DE when we drafted him.

Blanda,

Unless Mario Henderson is coming along, don't rule out trading down for a left tackle. Especiall if they pull off a coupe with Dallas and get two first round picks.

And, don't put too much emphasis on the point system for getting proper value. One of the articles I've read basically said the point system is pretty worthless in projecting the value of the player taken, which is the bottom line.

But, here's the primary thing with the free agents signed this year. Their age. These are, for the most part, all young players with 3-5 more years of high productivity.

Add to that, a pretty young line under the tutelage of Tom Cable that should be better with a second year.

Put this all together and we have upgraded with known quantities that will be around for several years. No matter who you pick in the draft, it's a crapshoot.

H, you're probably right. But I think the thing that none of us has said (however, the more I think about it, I think it's true), our very poor offensive line has become a pretty damn good one. It got us #6 in rushing.

You have to consider that a sizable number of sacks last season were caused by the revolving door QB position. Probably considerable extra yardage could have been added to our running game if we stuck with one featured back throughout the season.

On top of that, we're poised to upgrade at LT and RT from where we started a year ago. I think this is why Davis and Co. have focused on our skill positions on offense.

If we can now build one rock solid D I can envision the playoffs in our future. Just as long as everyone stays healthy - and THAT is the uncovered Joker in the deck that Mr. Davis is playing at the table.

Now, you see here... This is the kind of thing that makes me throw lamps at the TV or computer screen. And it's right on point regarding what H has been saying.

Whenever Davis looks into the possibility of acquiring someone with "character issues," the word is constantly that "Davis just loves malcontents overflowing with the criminal element."

When the Patsies do it, and this is from PFT, "Whether it’s Randy Moss or Corey Dillon or Brandon Meriweather, the Patriots have shown a willingness to look below the surface in an effort to get to a man’s true character."

So there you have it. If Davis drafts McFadden, McFadden is a criminal. If the Patsies draft McFadden, they've just looked under the surface to find McFadden's true character.

Do we have a spare computer monitor in the house? Great. I need another one.

Blanda, your assessemnt of 3-4, 4-3capabilities of our team is good, but please don't throw Biamla or Williams in the mix as felxible or helpful in either scheme. They are not any good regardless of the scheme.

5:13 PM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

Biamila and Williams have the same problem that Brayton had. They all played DE their entire football careers, when Caveman decided they were OLBs.

Brayton was allowed to return to his original position, but made nothing of it. Williams was not, but is a better OLB than Brayton, and suited as 3-4 OLB. He hasn't worked well in the 4-3 because he has no coverage skills. Biamila was moved back to DE by two previous stops, and played decently in specialized situations - especially when lining up as a DE, then shifting to an OLB in a 3-4. I think this is why the Raiders picked him up.

5:28 PM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

I'd just add that of all of the d-line to LB conversions that Caveman undertook, Williams actually won a starting job in the 3-4. He's looked terrible in the 4-3, but again, that's because he never learned any coverage skills.

I think he was retained for that reason.

Height: 6-5 Born: 1/25/1975
Weight: 299 Birthplace: Harrisonburg, VA
Exp: 10 years College: Marshall
Draft: 25th pick by Jaguars (1998), 5th Round

Blogger Calico Jack said...

With the signing of Edwards, I would anticipate us going 1 of 3 ways:

(1) Use our #4 to take Run DMc

(2) Trade down with the Jets at #6 and gain an additional 2nd round pick > Take Ryan Clady (#6) and either Pat Sims or Early Doucet in the 2nd round

(3) Trade down with the Cowboys and gain #22, #28, a 2nd & 3rd round > Target BAWR plus Sam Baker in 1st round, Sims 2nd round, BALB in 3rd round.

Here's are the scouting reports on some of these guys:

Ryan Clady: OT, Boise St. Height: 6-61/8 | Weight: 309 | 40-Time: 5.18
Strengths:
Has excellent size and a big frame with long arms...A fantastic athlete...Very light on his feet...An outstanding pass blocker...Real quick and agile..Great mobility and range...Excellent balance...Is a natural knee bender...A hard worker with a terrific motor...Plays with a nasty demeanor...Adequate strength...Adjusts well and never seems to panic....Can fit in a zone or man blocking scheme...Still has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Plays too high at times and need to use better leverage...Gets the job done as a run blocker but is not necessarily dominant...Has to refine his technique and work on mastering the nuances of the position...He isn't overly powerful at the point of attack and can get pushed back...He must continue strengthening his lower body.

Notes:
Redshirted in '04 and then started the next three seasons...Played right tackle as a redshirt frosh and then made a seamless transition to the left side when Daryn Colledge moved on to the pros...Has a rare blend of size and athleticism and was born to protect the quarterbacks blind side...Has all the physical tools you look for and he's the best pure left tackle prospect in this draft...A sure-fire Top 10-15 pick.

Sam Baker: OT, USC Height: 6-45/8 | Weight: 309 | 40-Time: 5.15
Strengths:
Has a large frame with long arms and some growth potential...Athletic with terrific feet...Quick, agile and moves well...Very smart with good awareness...Technically sound...Uses his hands well...Plays with pretty good leverage...Great balance...A natural left tackle..Fine character..Has a lot of experience against top competition.

Weaknesses:
Needs to bulk up and add weight...Has to get stronger...Lacks a nasty demeanor and killer instinct...Toughness has been questioned..An average run blocker..Gets pushed back at the point...Not overly powerful...Has some minor durability issues.

Notes:
Father, David, is the commissioner of the Arena Football League and also played basketball at UC Irvine...Brother, Ben, was an offensive lineman at Duke...Was a four-year starter in the Pac 10...Began his college career as an offensive guard in '03...May be overrated and a product of hype to a certain degree...Finesse blocker who won't be a good fit for every team but has an intriguing set of physical tools that could make him a hot commodity on Draft Day...A bit of a polarizing prospect.

Pat Sims: DT, AuburnHeight: 6-21/8 | Weight: 310 | 40-Time: 5.11
Strengths:
Good size and bulk...A great athlete...Very good speed and quickness..Anticipates well and has an excellent first step...Able to hold his ground at the point and does a solid job against the run...As a pass rusher he can use his power to bull rush or quickness to penetrate...Nice range and does a terrific job in pursuit....Aggressive and plays with a nasty demeanor..Is still developing and he has a lot of potential.

Weaknesses:
Needs to get stronger...Was basically a One Year Wonder...Does not always play with good leverage...Doesn't have a lot of playing experience...Inconsistent...Raw and has a ways to go when it comes to technique...Questionable conditioning and stamina...Marginal instincts and awareness..Has some pretty big character issues.

Notes:
Quit the football team two games into the 2005 season...Could project to either a 4-3 or a 3-4 scheme...Teams have to determine how coachable he is and whether or not he really loves the game....Interesting prospect who really started to come into his own as a junior and most will agree that his best football is still probably ahead of him...Has all the physical tools that you look for and a team will likely fall in love with his upside and take him earlier than his play might otherwise indicate

Early Doucet: WR, LSU Height: 6-01/8 | Weight: 209 | 40-Time: 4.50
Strengths:
Great natural athlete...Has good size and a solid frame...Quick with a burst...Has excellent hands...Very strong and tough...Elusive and it is difficult to tackle him in the open field...Good vision and runs well after the catch...Terrific blocker...A hard worker...Has been a deep threat in college...Can also contribute as a return man.

Weaknesses:
Average timed speed and he could have trouble separating from pro corners...Will have to work on his route running..Must do a better job of beating the jam...Minor durability concerns..Not much experience as his teams top target...Limited upside.

Notes:
Was a top recruit coming out of high school...Finally got an opportunity to start as a senior after being stuck behind future first round picks Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis...Might never be a true #1 target at the next level but could thrive in a role similar to the one he excelled in at LSU...Profiles as a #2 or slot option in the NFL.

I love the #1 option....Of course I do....

As far as the rest it may seem like a realistic plan but NOT with "MrD" who has NEVER traded down in the 1st rd....As was speculated at another time trading up for "SOH" may have been a legitimate possibility but now we have nothing for trade....Unless the "Fins" want a reject player or two and picks next year....Anything is possible because the "Tuna" and "MrD" are close friends....Also reportedly nobody wants a top 5 pick because of the "Cap" hit and all that guaranteed $$$$$'s....

My perfect but very UN-Realistic scenario would be to acquire the 1st pick from the "Fins" in trade for....Whatever....While still keeping the #4 pick....Maybe we could pull a "Ditka" and offer the rest of our draft...Jordan-Walters-Schwaigert -n- next years #1....

With the 1st selection in the 2008 NFL Draft the Raiders select..."DE"..."SOH".....RaH! RaH! RaH!...

With the 4th pick in the 2008 NFL draft the Raiders select..."RB-WR-QB"...Slashhhhhh...."McFabulous...RaH! RaH! RaH! HoooooRaYyyyy!!!....

It seems possible to me that we might still resign Newberry with the intent of moving Grove to G.

Turns out it was Ryan who suggested that he should be gone, but after group meetings with the Raiders it was decided that Rob would finish his contract.

Also turns out that Kiffin has been highly involved in all of the off season moves. It also turns out that Panty won't get his wish. It also turns out that Davis was indeed very upset that the Raiders only went 4-12 last season. It is apparent that Kiffin convinced him that after five years it had to be recognized that the Raiders had a personnel problem.

As for Ryan Clady he probably would be a good fit. But, if we trade with Dallas he would be gone by the time we pick.

The April Fool's article was by known Raider hater Os Davis.

Now, the spin is on. Basically some in the media are saying it really doesn't matter what Kiffin says, he has no authority. But, don't sell him short. Remember he played games with the media for several weeks last season on who would start at quarterback.

What Kiffin has said is "if you want McFadden, show us how badly."

And, what a shock, "Al Davis is demanding." And, working for him is unique. Considering his father works with Gruden, and his growing up around the NFL, I would think he knew that going in.

i'm 50/50 on some of these signings. but the difference this time than during gruden's time is that at least these signings, although some are injury risks, are younger guys still in their prime. some still have to make the team, so we really don't know right now if they'll help. but i'm excited as you all are i'm sure to see what we have on the field. as someone earlier said, winning cures all so we'll see.

The real LK's comments on espn.com's nfl page indicate that running back is not a draft priority and D-line is. Could be smoke, could be fact...

Calico... I was thinking the same thing after I read where the Raiders might be signing Grady Jackson (thus making it more likely they draft offense first).

Clady would prolly be a perfect fit in the ZBS... and it wouldn't surprise me if we traded down a few spots and picked him.

My first guess is still Gholston, but I think number two is Clady. Third would be trading up for SOH.

re mcfadden: i think russell and the offense needs mcfadden. some have mentioned not to take a chance on him because he can't move a pile once he's tackled. he can build strength in his legs. that can be learned. the other blue chipper RB's are potential stars too but they aren't as multi-dimensional as mcfadden. besides, al has done more shocking things than to potentially draft "another RB". he took janikowski even though we still had (i believe) joe nedney at the time.

just think of how dangerous the offense would be!

Scorpio,

We already have the guy who can move the pile. Bush.

Bush is also multi-demensional. Good receiver out of the backfield. Former quarterback who throws a nice halfback pass and is a decent blocker.

I think he threw a 40+ yard TD pass in college.

Runs like Wheatly, but with more speed and elusiveness. An every down back.

We have the guy we need provided he is all the way back. I have to trust the coaches, doctors and trainers for that.

On the other hand, this could be more smoke and mirrors from Alameda and they are planning to take him if available. I think Kiffin is happy with the stable of backs he has and wants to look elsewhere to improve the team.

Where do I go to read what Coach Kiffin said....I hope it "Smoke" because I really really want to see "McFabulous" running for us....NOT against us....

Maybe Kiffin is just testing the waters....

I know....Kiffin finally spoke but this is his "April-Fools" joke for the season....

Don't want to believe it....All I could find is he is happy with his "RB"s....

By the way. I hate Monday Night Football anyway, and this doesn't help. The game doesn't start for me until after 2200 hours.

At my advanced age I need all the rest I can get. Guess I'll have to take Tuesday off.

And, please don't have that stupid three man booth with Tony Kornheiser. The last couple of times I watched they spent a lot of the game conducting in booth interviews with sitcom actors and actually missed some plays.

The three man booth, in my opinion, is the bane of network football coverage. And, that doesn't even take into consideration the multiple sideline reporters. Why does it take five or six people to cover a game?

Panty,

Here are the quotes from one of the articles I read.

"[McFadden] is a phenomenal player .... But we really don't have a big need at running back," Kiffin said.

"[Trading down] is something we're looking at," Kiffin said.

Panty, there's still hope. In order for the Raiders to trade down, the trade will have to be more valuable than whoever is still available at #4.

If McFadden is taken by one of the top three, then either SOH, Gholston, or Jake Long will still be there, and we have a great need for any one of them. If those three are gone, and McFadden falls to us, then we will trade down with whoever ponies up enough to be more valuable to us than McFadden. Or - we take McFadden.

It depends on how it all plays out.

One more quick thought.

What if, with all the smoke screens and rumors last season and this off season, this is actually true and they are looking at trading down?

The jokes then on the media for trying to spin it as he has no authority and is not involved.

Scorpio-
I'd take a championship now!
AD ain't getting any younger and neither am I.
I actually think the team is building toward something now with all these young kids.

I saw how a different scheme can improve things looking at last years O-line.
I wonder if Blanda is not on to something with the mixing of a 3-4 from a base 4-3 keeping the same personnel on the field? I don't think at this point we can be solely dedicated to a 3-4 personnel wise but jeez changing things up a bit can't hurt.

I looked at a recent mock that has
1 - Ryan
2 - J Long
3 - Atlanta unable to pass on MFad in order to get some people back in the stadium and C Long coming to Oaktown.

Fire sale QB in the draft.

PFT is reporting that Colt Brennan will have to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip. They expect that will drop him into the late rounds if he gets drafted at all. He's going into surgery this month, and he might not be healed for 12 weeks.

I'd suggest we use our last pick on him, sign him for the league minimum, and let our trainers and doctors work with him.

We have JaMarcus, and I'm not suggesting a replacement, but it's always nice to have another bun in the oven if the one you're eating didn't turn out right. And if he gets a chance to prove himself, he'd make great trade bait. We wouldn't have to worry about him this year, because we'd just dump him to IR. Then in 2009, we have someone to bring in to push JRuss and dangle as trade bait.

I also think they will move Walter for picks so your idea is a good replacement....Al is known for making that type of pick...M Bush last year for example....

Well....I am hoping that Kiffin-n-"MrD" are shopping their pick to see what type of offers come up....But that it will really have to be a "Barn-Burner" for them to let go the #4 pick if their player is still there....Who ever that player is....Al has never done this in his history so if there is a Trade-Down it will show a great deal of power in that Rookie Coach....It already shows it if there is alot of dialoge from teams interested....

MEMDF,

Possible, but Parcells is a defensive guy. His favorite QB was Phil Simms a first rouder, but that was a couple of years before Parcells became head coach.

I suspect he will go defense. About all the Guppies have left on defense is Jason Taylor and he's too busy dancing these days.

Trade down and stock up. We have a good young core and need more depth and role players.

If there was any proof needed as to the completely worthless, dishonorable, and moronic media types we have covering the national sports, we have it today.

Kiffin spoke yesterday, saying that he was not asked to resign, but that the resignation being discussed was Rob Ryan's. It was mutually agreed that Ryan would finish his contract.

There was no truth that Kiffin had his authority removed, and has been heavily involved in all of the off season activity.

JaMarcus has been working out the whole off season, and has never approached 300 lbs. In fact, it seems that their concern is that they have to keep him from falling significantly below 260 lbs. because they believe his size is one of the things that enables him to do what he does.

Have you seen one article written by any of the turds who have spread these rumors. "Sorry, I was an idiot." NO! And you won't. In fact, what you'll see is some of them treating their rumors like they were vetted months ago, and are all true (no matter what Kiffin says).

And remember, some of these jerk-offs were claiming that unless it was Kiffin who debunked the story, it must be true.

Although we did get that absolutely adorable article today about the Raiders switching to "pink."

Calico,
I think you're probably right about Ryan Clady being the better fit. Trading down with the Jets seems ideal.

If we're stuck at #4 and SOH is gone I can still see us going J.Long though.

Clady scares me a little because he tends to get pushed around. But Long scares me a little against speed guys, which the NFL is FULL of.

Either way, it's a scary proposition after the whole Gallery thing. Still, I would sleep better knowing we have more options than K.Harris/McQuistan/Henderson. If someone goes down we're screwed.

Scorpio- I have suggested the "ALL IN" approach may be a little short-sighted.

It seems like the Raiders were (are) more than one year removed from really turning things around, particularly since Russell missed all of camp last year, and this year will be his first NFL camp/preseason.

The idea that we can buy a championship off a 4-12 season is high risk, but I can't say that I'm not totally intrigued.

I have mixed feelings about MNF, but I haven't watched a Raider game in the comfort of my own home in two years, so it will be a welcome change... even with Tony Cornhole and the endless booth interviews.

"Raidio Free Raider"....

You can tune into the Raiders radio broadcast and listen to the play-by-play with Coach Flores -n- Plunket -n- Artie....

If you are outside the listening area and don't have satellite radio you can get it on the Web @.....

http://www.real.com/nfl?brand=nfl&pcode=gc_
reg&cpath=gc_home&rsrc=gc_NO&d=.ram

Live hook-up....What more could you want....And sometimes I am hearing the play a second or two before it happens on the screen....Sorta strange to watch but its all good in RaiderVille....

PantyRaider....NO-EarPlugs!!!!

Another funny note....A "Mule-Brain" at the "Donkey-Post" asked me what was the dumbest deal the Raiders ever did so I got to expound about the hiring of an "OC" from the "Donko"s and making him "HC" and than NOT paying that Dumb-Ass his $225K....What a dumb question and that "MuleHead" opened himself up for a Spanking....Mistreatment of "AniMules" is NOT Prohibited....

There is some talk about comparing Davis' attempt to buy a winning team with Snyder's in DC. Ask yourself, if you were looking for someone to buy you a winning NFL franchise, who would you hire to get that done? Davis or Snyder.

Snyder bought himself a train of super stars, with no real direction. Davis has pulled an old page out of the book, and has found players that have proven that they have legitimate potential, but for issues of timing, injury, or personality clashes haven't gelled with their recent team. All are in their NFL prime, and should be able to play for 10 years if they stay healthy.

That is exactly what Davis did when he got here, at it's exactly what he's doing again.

Oh, and weighing in on MNF...

It is almost unwatchable. I'd almost rather just listen to the radio broadcast. Even if you turn the sound down, you're more likely to be seeing a picture of Kornheiser's cornhole than the 10 yard scamper on the field.

BSPN is simply a mess.
