Who Let The Dogs Out? (Jets Pregame)

Who let the dogs out? Prior to playing the Eagles last week, the Raiders blitzed less per defensive snap than any other team in the NFL.

Then, suddenly, they decided to bring it, blitzing like crazy, sacking Donovan McNabb six times and notching an improbable victory.

Afterward, Nnamdi Asomugha said that defensive coordinator John Marshall admitted he might get "yelled at" for employing such a defense, which tells you something, does it not?

With the the Jets and their rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez struggling lately, it seems to me that the Raiders should continue to mix things up and bring pressure when warranted.

Don't put the dogs back in the pen!

Gotta bring the heat.
should be a good mix of man/blitz/zone, all geared to pressure the rookie.

Personally, I think running all man or all zone is stupid. It's like just passing or just running.

Hopefully the WR's and Jruss are on today, because we're gonna need zack and russell, and the RB in blocking alot.

The best thing about watching the Eagles game was on 3rd down when I knew the 3man rush- get burned bad - D play was comming up, and we actually rushed all 4 linemen and had tight coverage!

Anyway, that must continue (agressive D), and we can't just abandone it if we get burned.

I don't expect the Raiders to continue the pressure. They have hinted all week that while the situation against the Eagles warranted pressure, the Jets are going to run the ball, particularly with Sanchez struggling.

I'm inclined to agree with that assessment, and I expect Thomas Jones to pretty much have his way with the Raiders front seven. Sorry, but one game (against the Eagles) won't likely change seven years of poor run D.

Jets are at or near the top in the league in big runs of 20+ yards. The Raiders are at or near the bottom of the league in giving up big runs of 20+.

Jets have an all-pro O-line, and use cut-blocking which has proven to be the Raiders' achilles heel against many teams.

I look for the Jets to control the ball and the clock, with another marginal day for the Russell and the Raiders' 0.

Sorry folks, that's how I see it.

Any difference-maker will depend on how pumped up the Raiders are to repeat last week. It will take an all-out effort by all three squads, plus solid coaching.

Michael Crabtree update: Just checked my fantasy league stats and found Michael Crabtree has already tied DHB's seasonal total receptions at 2. I think that game is in the 2nd qtr.

I didn't check OT Michael Oher's stats, but he could have tied DHB as well.... truly sad.

"Darrius will come around. He'll be great," Davis said. "What's his name, Jerry Rice, was called 'Oops.' Couldn't catch the ball. Terrell Owens. Couldn't catch the ball. Fred Biletnikoff. I was going to trade him, then at the last minute I didn't because he couldn't catch the ball.

"Somehow or other they came around. Darrius will come around, I hope."

We'll see how much of a genius Al is as DHB grows or doesn't grow. Yeah, we could have had Craptree, but I am glad we didn't select him. He's a diva, end of story. I just wish we select Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin.

So does Cable final bench JarBUSTEst or allow him to lose this game. 2 INT's and 1 fumble.

Tommy Kelly is gone offically too from what it sounds like.

DHB finally grabs one.

Yeah, blitzing a running team doesn't serve any real purpose other than to let a guy like Jones go for big yardage. Regardless, Russell is so bad, it doesn't even matter.

A good portion of NFL receivers are divas. Who the hell cares!? Crabtree stays out of trouble, works hard, runs great routes, had big hands, etc. Gimme a break. I take that over a waste of a pick ANY day. DHB CAN NOT CATCH. That's not going to change. Rice had a stellar rookie season. He dropped some, but he also got open. DHB can't even do that. He had downhill speed, but where's the quickness? Gimme a friggin' break!

Cable has no say over benching JaMarcus. That's Al's call.

2:07 PM
Blogger Raider Take said...

My thing is, blitz when warranted. Obvious passing downs, etc. Of course, if they put up another unanswered seven points here soon, then they'll just run the rest of the day, anyway. We've rendered the point moot with early turnovers.

Before the Eagles game, we blitzed less than any other team in the NFL. There was a reason for that, and it's the same reason Marshall said he might get yelled at for doing something different.

Agreed RT. The thing is that on both offense and defense our philosophy is too simplistic. Not that we don't have some serious personnel issues.

Anyway, they just pulled JaMarcus. Too bad we have Garcia or someone to at least make it entertaining.

Another game over by the 2nd quarter. The stands look empty. Russell looks empty. The Raiders look empty.

24 points is absolutely insurmountable for the 2009 Raiders. So much for making a game of it.

Take, quityerbitchin'. JRuss's been pulled, okay?

This happened, IIRC, back at LSU and it got JRuss on a tear that took 'em to the National Championships. It could be the thing that gets him going *this* time.

I understand being upset about how things are going. Hell, *I'm* as upset as anyone. But it seems that it doesn't matter what decision is made, people are going to bitch and moan.

Someone needs to grow up.

Sorry, but that's my take.

I figured that there was some master plan to have JRuss stick it out and take his lumps, lost season or not, so that he would gain playing time and experience. That was the only thing I could figure that would explain why he wasn't benched.

Then now we bench him, and the timing puzzles me.

2:41 PM

Jeff, you need to learn the game and use a little common sense. This isn't college. This is the NFL. Russell: poor footwork, show reaction time, low football IQ, slow release, no pocket presence, holds on to the ball too long, lack of leadership, etc. Ryan Leaf looked better for chrissakes. This is a done deal: JaMarcus is beyond a bust. Only his NFL contract allows him to play in this league, period.

2:42 PM
Anonymous Arkansan Raider said...

No, John C. This isn't college ball.

But, John C., that observation isn't about football as much as it is about human nature. As a jail chaplain, I know a li'l bit about that.

I'd suggest less condescension in the future, my friend.

At this point, I'm almost okay with us losing. The faster Al wakes up and hires a GM, the faster we can get to rebuilding this team from the ground up. You think Gruden wants to come back? Probably not. We're now down 31-0. Sad.

AR, no one expects Gradkowski to do much of anything. He was terrible at Tampa Bay. Why we even signed him is beyond me. He's at the 3rd-string level. That's the thing. Al just can't evaluate QB talent. We let the best QB in camp leave. And he was an over-the-hill, 40 year old shorty.

I'm honestly not trying to be snarky, but why would you think anything would be different after this game that hasn't been going on for the last six years? There has been so many signs that there needs to be fundamental changes to the organization, I'm not sure how one more loss against the Jets is going to change anything.

One game won't change anything. You're right about that. But Al has made the right changes before, and it often occurs after years of embarrassing himself. I think it's got to be sinking in at some level that he's failing. He even admitted during the firing of Kiffin that he'd like to find a GM. Well, another disaster season might be what it takes to get Al to loosen the reigns.

Ark. Russell is a bust because you can tell by evaluating his skill set and football IQ. There is no hope for. That I'm sure of. Just as sure as I was that Crabtree was and is an infinitely better receiver than H-bet the bust.

The Raiders are a bust.

4:15 PM
Blogger AvantGrape said...

Ummm Ark. The Raiders specifically simplified their offense for JaMarcus, and that's because he has low football IQ. Hell, he can't even grasp the offense the Raiders are running now, which is criminal given the amount of money he is making. There are several young QB's who have grasped much more sophisticated offenses in their rookie season. Moreover, you mistake in comparing Russell's college career to the NFL. I too watched a great many LSU games. JaMarcus had tons of time back then and was playing against slower defenses. In the NFL, JaMarcus hasn't even shown an ability to look off his primary receiver. It's when the play breaks down that JaMarcus is even a bigger nightmare. Do you watch the games? Bottom line is this: if you can't make lightening quick reads and have pocket presence (can't feel the rush), you won't make it. No amount of good coaching has ever changed that. Keep dreamin'. But he's a major bust. No doubt about it.

NY you look like a genius... great early call on what would happen today.
John C- agree with you... I am to a point of accepting the ass-beatings in hopes of HQ changes... but I agree with Toni as well, what makes us think it will happen?
As for Jruss... no rookie QB is going develop in our hell hole. Forget about it. With the lone exception of gannon, during the Gruden mirage, no Raider Qb has been worth a crap in the last 20 years. Try to hold your lunch as we remember... drum roll please:
Hilger, Buerlein, Schroeder, Hostetler, Hobert, Evans, George, Mirer, Collins, the ex-lions qb that I can't remember his name, ... I'm sure there were others. No one was a winner.
And don't remind me of George and his great TD/Int ratio. I remember his games for how awfully uncompettitive they were... weren't we 4-12 that year with one game being won against Denver when Kaufmann ran for almost 300 yards?
But I blame none of those QBs. None of them.
No Qb can succeed in our circus like environment. Think it's a wise investment to spend 60 mil on a rookie Qb and then let him "grow" in what Jruss has been under for the last 3 years?

Cable, " JaMarcus is still our starting QB."

Maybe Russell has enough Mink Coats and bling for the entire team to wear. Cause its gonna be a very long winter.

And having Chaz back will not create wins in the W column. The Raiders think that Chaz will revitalize this team and give Russell his #1 target back? So what? We'll still lose games regardless who's catching the ball.

So Richard are you guys going to the playoffs this year? " No comment."
