Falcons Gameday Thread

One quarter down, and so far a lackluster game, with the Falcons on the move. Gotta get some hometown energy going!

No pass rush. Sad Sandy

Wow! Not a single forced punt by Raiders D. Sean Smith actually looks like a bust. Looks like teams can neutralize Mack and not worry that anyone else will beat them.

My early impression is that Raiders are badly missing Ball (to cover TEs) and Edwards (to stuff the run).

Scaling Mount .500 is going to be a challenge once again this year if the defense doesn't get its s*** together.

NY the Raiders seem weak to mdeicore up the middle. The DTs are space cloggers at best not difference makers, heeney and smith are atrocious, and McGill and Nelson dont seem to be around the ball. Combined with a under achieving pass rush its ugly.

What is most depressing is when you look at the schedule at the start of the year this is a game you count as a W if you are hoping playoffs.

Sandy, yes, but the Saints game might have been one you'd normally dismiss. I said to start the season, Raiders can only beat themselves. I might've been wrong if they lack talent (or coaching).

I guess we can argue it takes time for the D to mess. But not forcing a punt is as low as it gets. Nowhere to go but up....

It seemed on every running play Heeney was picking the wrong hole or not strong enough to fight through the wash. Pass coverage on backs and TEs our lbs have been useless for ten years

Del Rio has to rethink Heeney at MLB. Sean Smith acts like he doesn't want to be here. The Raiders D did a better job creating pressure at times on Ryan, but the pass coverage was dismal and allowed him to get rid of the ball quickly. Nelson and Smith looked lost on another blown coverage deep to Julio Jones.
I think the problem is Smith is used to playing Zone, and the Raiders are wanting him to play man. Nelson is used to blitzing, and the Raiders want to use him for coverage. At some point, Del Rio and Norton have to utilize their strengths. I miss TJ Carrie opposite of Amerson. Raiders have to get it together on Defense if they are going to turn the corner. Up next is a Titans team that is up and coming, and took the Raiders to school in Pre-Season. JUST WIN, BABY!

I think there has to be some shakeup on defense after yesterday. How can our #1 pick not be plug and play after off-season programs, training camp and preseason?

Browns have cut Rookie Middle Linebacker Scooby Wright. Reggie should be picking up his phone.

Sure try him out but if the Browns, who are rebuilding, don't think enough of this kid to keep him, I wouldn't get too hopeful.

Nate,

It is depressing for me to see you writing about picking up a waiver wire mlb two games into the season.

It shows football is truly a team game. The Raiders have some amazing talent (Mack, Carr, Osomele is a beast, Hudson).

But there are holes on the defense and when you loose a key piece like Mario Edwards weak links like Heeney and one dimensional players like Jelly and Williams are exposed.

They must commit everything to stopping the run this week and take their chances with Mariotta who is inconsistent at best. I am not that worried about Sean Smith as of yet, I think he will get it together. The problem is the d line and the lbs.

Sandy, it's only two games; no time to panic, right? Unless you give up record yardage and teams score at will against you...

Smith looks bush league. He's not smart; he's not athletic... to point of being slow. I think he has yet to defend a pass, but he has given up many, including multiple TDs. This guy has been a huge liability. I'm not sure he can come back from that.

Raiders play a lot a man coverage, and maybe he's more of a zone guy. Remember, the same thing happened with DeAngelo Hall.

Heeney is another liability, and I was rooting for him to start... thought he had ball hawking skills. He can shed a block, and he's slow in coverage.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is JDR taking over play calling at the end of the last game. Is this the beginning of the end for Norton?

Need a big shake-up.

I'm not concerned about Smith. He's a proven above average CB, and will get it right. It's a new system for him, and there were times Nelson was suppose to help over the top, especially on the 98 yard TD in week 1, and didn't. Nelson has never been a cover Safety, and I wonder if we could move him to cover the TE's instead of the Middle LB? He seems more suited for that role, and for the occasional blitz. Both of those guys need to get their head around their assignments in this system though. It's killing us.

I'm more concerned with Heeney, and was concerned last season as well. It is true, NY, that he can shed a block, but he has never been quick to the RB gap, and can't cover his grandmother on a passing route. I was surprised that he was named starter, and just as surprised he made the roster. I think this position is what we should fill the 53 man roster with. The problem is we are reserving that for when Reece comes back, so who would we cut to fill the MILB position? I say Tawain Jones. He is another liability, especially on kick returns. He has proven he cannot handle that position.

Norton needs to figure this out too. He is not keeping track of subs, and he looks lost on play calling coverage on Sunday. He didn't seem to know what was going on. We haven't even seen Joseph yet at Safety, which we will this weekend. I think that is where the problems on Defense start, with the Coordinator. I love Norton, but he needs to get his act together more than anyone at this point.

I don't think it's the system. Smith showed no instinct to cover inside and has been burned badly on the outside. He looks incapable.

I believe McGill was mostly covering TEs, and he failed too.

Putting Nelson in the mix, you have to wonder if the Raiders had any idea these guys might not fit the system.

In the end, I agree, Norton has to shoulder this responsibility.

Looking ahead, Joseph will replace McGill. The scary thing about that is that McGill beat out Joseph to start the season. Same with Cowser now replacing Heeney. We could be worse... or is that possible?

I don't know if Smith will get his act together, but...

Reggie should have signed CB Jenoris Jenkins. He's been amazing for
Giants so far.

McGill didn't beat out Joseph, Joseph was still recovering from his ACL injury last year, and though he played in preseason the Raiders felt they pushed him too much and too early, so they backed off in week 4 of the Preseason and went in with the thought that he wouldn't start for a few weeks, and be utilized as a sub. Well, he hasn't played a game yet.

Heeney and Irvin were mostly covering TEs against the Falcons. Heeney more so than Irvin, but both were getting burned. I think Irvin should be utilized more as a DE, especially with Edwards Jr out. I think he'd do more damage in that role. Put Shilique Calhoun on the outside. Cory James is starting ahead of Heeney this week, there is no Cowser on the roster.

If you watch the film, Smith is expecting help on those plays he gets burned on the outside, and had none. Either Smith missed his assignment, or Nelson. The Raiders coaching staff knows. Probably a combination of the two, meaning they both missed their assignment. Bottom line, if he continues to get burned, TJ Carrie should come back into that role. I have mixed feelings about that because Carrie gets the job done for the majority of the time, but has the tendency to reach out and grab the WR too much.

A big part of the problem is Norton not knowing when to get subs in and play the situation. I think Del Rio is going to step in and help with subs and play-calling, from the sound of it. I'm not sure Norton is ready for this. He is a terrific coach, and I think could be an outstanding Coordinator; but Pete Carroll did him no favors in helping him prepare for this role. The Raiders need to create pressure on the QB and free up Mack, and the CBs need to cover their guys man-to-man so that the Raiders can blitz Nelson, Irvin, or Smith.

Nate - I don't think the Raiders play Joseph, especially in preseason, unless he's 100%. That's just coach speak. JDR said he's having trouble focusing on his assignments.
