Same Ol' Raiders?

Say out out loud: "John Madden, age 78 and 30+ years removed from coaching, sits in with Mark Davis on an interview with Mike Shanahan (!) for the Raiders head coaching job."

When you say it out loud, how does it sound to you? To me, it sounds friggin' crazy.

What is it about the Raiders gravitating to the rear-view mirror instead of the windshield?

Look, I love John Madden. I also love Jim Otto, but I don't want him to play center next year.

Of course, that's a little harsh. Madden has a ton of experience and perspective. I get that.

But at some point, we just need to make a clean, firm break from the past, don't we? If only to telegraph the right message to the rest of the world (ie: other top coaching candidates and coveted free agents).

So no matter how helpful Madden might be, or how viable Shanahan might be as a candidate, what do you think when you hear "John Madden sat in on a Raiders interview with Mike Shanahan"?

You think the same thing you thought when the Raiders went 4-12, 4-12 and 3-12 under new ownership and new management: Same 'ol Raiders.

Yet the decks are still clear. The road is wide open. There's still time. No decisions have been made, and the candidates are aplenty.

Let's hope that the windshield, and not the rear-view mirror, wins the day.

It's absolutely mind blowing. With the rear view mirror approach, we'd be better off with AL conducting interviews and making the decision. At least AL was qualified.

Don't forget, Mark Davis also flew to the Denver to interview Jack Del Rio. That interview was solo, so we can’t be sure if they talked football or knitting (maybe they were smoothing out bad blood, as was suggested with the Shanahan interview).

Worst part is, Davis had Scot Mclaughlin ready to sign and replace McKenzie. Somebody – who is trusted in the organization – needs to run football operations.

It looks like a total disaster. Like you said, RT, there's still time to get it right.

I agree Take. We have a chance to finally get over the hump, not only as a team, but as an organization. But with the way things are being done, it is obvious that the wheels are stuck in deeper mud than what was once thought when Al passed.

I don't understand why this is such a difficult concept. (Read this with thick sarcasm) I think that Mark is tanking on purpose, because after all, he's trying to repair the damage with the League brought on by his father; and this is what the League and Media expect from the Raiders now. A clown organization, and who better, the once mighty Raiders that everyone loves to hate. I'm sure Jones would agree.

It's nice to reminisce in the past and talk about how great it was, but the problem with this organization is they are living in the past. I believe they see how the not too distant future can bring us back to good times, but I don't think they have a clue how to get there. It's depressing. It prevents us from moving forward, attracting quality players and coaches. Just like Al's prevent Defense.

One thing that doesn't get discussed much is the Raiders stadium uncertainty. Is that a potential road block to signing a HC? I just read they haven't even secured a lease for 2015 but they are selling season tickets.

Who's running this show?

I can't agree with your take, Take.
Are you suggesting That MD should go solo and not include Madden as a sounding board?? Really? Madden has been in and around football for the last 50 years. He could have coached or GM'd or anything he wanted to do successfully, but his phobia of planes kept him from doing those jobs. That doesn't mean he isn't qualified to help out in the decision process. I said what you asked me to out loud. Sounds good to me when I think about alternatives.
Mike Shanahan...Didn't this guy win 2 superbowls? Didn't he take a rookie qb(RGIII) to the playoffs as a rookie? Wasn't he the main architect of the offense post Walsh when the niners won thier 5th superbowl? What exactly is the problem with bringing in possibly the most qualified guy still on the market in for an interview? Seriously...Whats wrong with that? One thing is for sure with Shanahan, Carr would be a pro bowl qb.
Me I think Jim Mora JR. could be the next Pete Carrol(NFL, college, NFL) but Shanahan would also be a good choice...that's my take.

SCAR,
I'm not saying they should rely on these guys' opinion, but he either trusts McKenzie as his GM or he doesn't. If the reason why he hired McKenzie to handle football operations because of his lack of knowledge, then let him handle football operations. If he has lost trust in McKenzie then let him go. Why is he involved in this process if he doesn't completely understand it?
I will tell you why (read with sarcasm). It's because Mark Davis is tanking the organization on purpose at the NFL's request to further humiliate the Raiders.

1:01 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

It certainly won't matter how we get there, only that we get there. But there seems to be tremendous dysfunction or disconnect in the process that’s currently taking place, and it appears to stem from an apparent and understandable deterioration of the owner’s confidence in his GM relative to selecting the next Raiders HC.

Honestly, as much as we all love John Madden (who doesn’t?), what is really going on here? Davis stated in his interview with Kawakami that he is using Madden as a resource only. Somebody still needs to make a decision here, and you have to wonder if anyone in the room is truly current and qualified in today’s NFL marketplace.

Don't understand Raiders always looking to Donkos for coaches.

Let me break the news to Mark Davis, & Reggie. Donks are a one man team. That man is Peyton Manning. Without Manning, Donks would be lucky to win 7 games.

Didn't we just watch Del Rio's defense get shredded by Andy Dalton a few weeks ago ? That's right Andy Dalton.

Why do we need Del Rio, or Shanarat to coach the Raiders ?

Bring in Shurmur. Let him build around Carr. This aint rocket science.

Once Manning gets to old, the Donkos will be done. We don't need their bums.

Raider00, you can look at one game be it amazing or terrible and make a judgement. Or you can look at the body of work. Del Rio's Defense is 3rd in the NFL. He has Head coaching experience. I'm not advocating for Del Rio unless and until I know he will bring in a star offensive coordinator, but he isn't a bum.
Shanahan...Again,to make a point on Shanahans value,,, Elway played in the league for 13 years and didn't get it done until Shanahan and Terrell Davis showed up. Hated yes, a bum, no. Shanahan isn't too old to coach. He's younger then Pete Carroll. He got a year off to re-focus. Whoever gets Shanahan will be getting a good coach.
Shurmer is an intriguing choice...

SCAR, I think for me it's not that Madden can't contribute anything, or that Shanahan is a bum; it's that this team could really a fresh start and a clean break from a past that has largely become a philosophical burden rather than a true asset.

The whole knock on Al Davis was that he was living in the past.

So he passes away and the first thing we do is assemble old Raiders who recommend an old Raider to become the GM. Then, after three seasons with a total of 11 wins, comes the news that an old Raider is helping interview an old Raider coach, while the old Raider GM is apparently off somewhere else.

It just doesn't sound right to me. Maybe, just maybe, it's time to charge forward and proceed on a path that doesn't include any old names or ties.

It pains me to say it, because the history and lore of the Raiders is something I cherish. But a clean break is what I think this organization needs.

1st thing, you didn't do anything.....2nd thing, Mark was handed the team, did you want him to refer to some Steeler acquaintances?

His best move was to listen to trusted Raiders Madden and Wolf. Nothing wrong with hiring ex Raiders....this site is so anti Raider it's disgusting.

So this site is now declaring Reggie as the OLD GM? And Madden is running the franchise? Is that your theory? And you call mine fucked up?

Maybe just maybe you should let it play out before you shoot it all down. But we all know how quick you are with your trigger....Mr Premature.

Let them hire the HC, let them go through this draft and FA period, this is their best kick at the can since the regime change and you want to shit all over it before it's even near complete. Is that a Raider? Not in my book.

It's just a rehash of the "crew's" position when Al was alive.

I did not miss when you said that the Raiders are apparently the first team in the history of the NFL to tank games to secure the FOURTH pick in the draft.

I must have missed when you said in what year under Reggie's tenure it would be unacceptable to win less than six games. Was it year two, three, four, five, six, seven or eight? Nine? Let me know, because I must have missed it.

If Dennis Allen was the best option available to McKenzie at time of his hire (as you suggest he was), and Mark Davis, with Madden’s counsel, understands and believe this to be true (as you obviously do), then why has Mark Davis – who admits to having no real football knowledge – taken the reins of hiring a new HC?

That’s the discussion here that you obviously prefer to avoid. Saying “let it play out” on a Raiders blog forum is about as lame as your “I’m the victim here” routine.

Scar...strength of Donkos is their offense. They put up 30+points, most games. Makes playing defense somewhat easy.

I'll give you 3 available Dc's better then Del Rio.

Rex Ryan, Todd Bowles, Dan Quinn. If Raiders are so hellbent on hiring a Dc, why haven't these top choices even been interviewed ?

Del Rio is a hack. Go back to his HC days of the Jags. He had some playoff teams, but they played lousy on the road. Sound familiar ?

So what's the diff between Del Rio, and Sparano ? Both had some early HC success, then failure.

Might as well keep Sparano, rather then Mark & Reggie embarrassing themselves again, with Donko losers.

I think Raiders would be better off if Mark & Reggie would stop being in awe of all things Donko, and start competing against them, instead.

Lets start being the REAL Raiders again. So what would the old Raiders do ?

How about next time we play the Donkos, somebody smacks Peyton Manning in that pencil neck of his.

Lets stop smiling at him, while watching his wobble passes float into arms of wide open receivers.

Didn't Del rio wear suits on the sidelines ? I getting sick just thinking of it.

Rex Ryan is going to Bills, and will have a similar QB mess he had with NYJ. Good D though.

I agree with 00, I have some reservation about dipping into the Bronco well again. In addition to the Manning affect, John Fox is HC, so Del Rio has plenty of help in Denver, just like Dennis Allen before him.

Dick LeBeau resigned from Steelers but he is not retiring. Doesn't sound like he's a HC candidate but he's a top flight DC. Is he looking for a warmer climate? LeBeua would be a huge upgrade from Jason Tarver.

I'd rather have an offensive minded person as Head Coach, because there are only a few of them. I am liking more and more, that we hire Pep Hamilton. I think that is who we are waiting for. If the Colts lose, I believe an offer will be made to Pep, and he can bring in his own DC (and there are a bucket to choose from, including Wade Phillips who has no job, and is one of the best DC's in the League). The concern for me, is getting a second-third tier HC, or a first time HC, and then hiring coordinators with no experience in the League.

What bothers me about all of this, is at the time Hue was let go, Arians was available as the Colts OC, and there were a slew of other names that were available that was better suited for the position the DA. At the time, we all knew that Hue was going to be let go because of how he handled himself.

So now, here we are again after 3 years, looking for another coach; and it appears we may be headed in the wrong direction. I'm all for Pep Hamilton, Darrell Bevell, and even Todd Bowles as first time Head Coaches. But, if the Raiders are headed in that direction, surround them with a quality coaching staff that is competent enough to execute the HC's game plan. In my opinion, I think it is down to Pep Hamilton and Tony Sparano. I'm pulling for Pep.

On a different note, Jeff Tedford and Marc Trestman are available OC's if the Raiders brass decide to go with a Defensive minded Head Coach.

After today's game (which I'm glad the Doncos lost), it appears Del Rio will be our next Head Coach.

Tedford and Trestman are available to interview as OC. Scott Linehan and Jason Garrett are Free Agents to sign. Mike Shannahan is a Free Agent to sign as OC. Wade Phillips is a Free Agent to sign as DC. Any of those combinations are 3 steps above Tarver and Olsen.

Now think about this, Gase's future is up in the air. Manning has not said what will happen next season, especially with the potential of losing both Thomases.

Broncos canned their entire coaching staff. That could make Manning's decision to retire an easy one.

Fox is a top HC. Say what you want about his success being tied directly to Manning, he had no problem out-coaching Dennis Allen and Tony Sparano.

IMO, there are several options available to the Raiders right now. I think the Raiders should pay premium salaries to secure HC and two top flight coordinators. Dick LeBeau is out there.

Here's an idea, hire the Broncos entire coaching staff!!

What a huge upgrade that would be!

Hello out there. Del rio just got fired, and no other team in NFL is interested in him. Has he even had one HC interview since Jags fired him ?

There's no way Donkos will hire Del rio. They wouldn't have fired him in the first place. No doubt they think their defense under performed.

Oh, but here comes Mark & Reggie. The only 2 fools sniffing around Del rio.

Dunver just shot themselves in the foot trying to force Manning to retire. Dunver being Dunver. Maybe Elway is going to be Mascot, GM, and Head Coach!

Del Rio needs a strong OC if he joins the Raiders. I hope, if he becomes the HC, he retains DeFilippo as OC, or bring in Tedford.

Jerry McDonald tweeted that Al would be on the phone with Urb Meyer because Ohio State has everything Al looked for. Bigger, stronger, faster. Yeah, that is exactly why Mark won't be on the phone with him because he wants to do everything opposite of his dad.

As I said before, I wouldn't hire Del Rio above the pay grade of DC, if at all. I don't like the idea of hiring twice in a row from the same source.

However, IMO, the Broncos are foolish to look for coaching perfection at the expense of losing their franchise QB.

Raiders seem to have lots of options available to them. There is no room for error. Another bad HC decision could set the franchise back several more years.

The Donkos are being smart. Peyton Manning is done. They are turning the page, moving forward.

The Raiders are being dumb. Donkos left a few crumbs on the ground, and 2 dumbest men in NFL, Mark & Reggie chase after them.

Del rio is a crumb. No one else in NFL is looking in his direction.

Raiders should build through their strength, Derrick Carr.

Hire Shurmur, and get that offense flying. In Philly, Qb's like Foles & Sanchez are thrwing for 350 yrds. I'm sure Carr can do same, if not better.

But no, not the Raiders. Always 5 steps behind. So while Donks look forward. Mark & Reggie are reaching back, way back, to Del rio.

Better not sign him to more then a 3 year contract. This way, when Reggie is gone in 2 years, Del loser will only have one year left on deal. Only fair to next GM.

I don't want Manning's soft approach to offense. We're too soft as it is on offense. Again, the only thing soft about the Broncos the last 4 years under Fox was the QB play (Tebow and Manning).

This hire made sense when he was available 4 years ago before DA, and I definitely take him over Sparano.

He will be bringing in Mike Smith as his DC, but I'm more interested in who he has in mind for Special Teams and Offensive Coordinator. These two names need to hit it out of the park. I think John DeFilippo would be an awesome OC. Marc Trestman would be ok, I am not sure he has what he used to, but I wouldn't mind giving him a shot.

Other names that he could possibly bring in is Adam Gase, Scot Linehan, or Doug Marrone. Whoever it is, has to bring it offensively. Be aggressive, not soft or passive.

Del Rio is actually a bit of a disappointment for me. For all the names floated around the media as being of interest to the Raiders, the interview process was still very limited and very fragmented.

J-Mac posted an article that detailed the interviews conducted, and by whom. Turns out, Davis interviewed a couple guys, and McKenzie interviewed a couple guys, and Madden was involved with a couple interviews, but I believe there were only two candidates that actually interviewed with all the brass present.

So what does that mean in the end? Who the hell knows. It just seems like, to borrow a phrase, same ole Raiders.

Nate, you nailed it. The coordinators will be huge, and likely make or break this team (as we saw with Knapp, Olsen and Tarver).

I like DeFilippo as a coach (seen him in action on NFL Network in a couple Senior Bowls which the Raiders have had the disgrace to coach). He's gained interest from other teams for OC openings.

I disagree that they didn't reach out to Ryan, Bowles, and Quinn. NFL reported that all 3 were contacted by the Raiders for an initial interview, and all 3 turned down the interview.

If the Doncos were still in the mix, we'd have Pep Hamilton as our HC. I'll take either, but I'm more happy that it is Del Rio the more I think about it because of his coaching experience in the NFL (Pep has only had 2 years).

Atlanta didn't have a bad defense the first few years with Smith, but then they lost players to free agency when the owner went offense heavy. Smith didn't have much of a talent pool defensively like he will in Oakland. I'd still take Wade Phillips, who isn't coaching anywhere.

The bottom line that is going to make or break Del Rio is Offensive Coordinator. Who does he bring in?

I'm expecting Jones to come in and say he's been telling us it was Del Rio all along. Jones, do you think Del Rio is going to throw games next year to position the Raiders for a high draft pick?

If he brings in Mike Smith as DC, the Raiders will become the Jags, West Coast. Not sure that excites me, considering the Jags flamed out, causing both coaches to be fired.

Del Rio has a 4-year deal with the Raiders. McKenzie has 2 years left. IMO, if this thing isn't turned completely around in 2 years, I'd clear the building. How can anything less be acceptable?

Ryan would rather freeze his ass off in Buffalo, again, with no Qb.

And Quinn will wait for a HC job down the road, that may never come his way.

If true, I think all 3 are pretty gutless, and I'm glad Raiders were not their choice.
