Rise and Shine, Raider Nation!

UPDATE 7:31 AM: Done deal? For what it's worth, ESPN has posted the following under a massive "Breaking News" banner on its home page: "It appears the Oakland Raiders have made their choice, and it's JaMarcus Russell. According to two sources, one with the Raiders and one close to Russell, the team called the LSU quarterback Friday to inform him he would be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL draft.:

Rise and shine, Raider Nation! Spike your coffee and start your takes...The Raider Take 2007 Draft Day Lounge is open for business.

Today is the day we select JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Today is the day we surprise everyone by picking Brady Quinn instead. Today is the day we freak everyone out by making Joe Thomas number one. Today is the day we trade Randy Moss for a second round pick, opening the door to draft Calvin Johnson at the top. Today is the day we pack a shopping cart full of picks from the Buccaneers by trading down a few slots. Today is the day anything can and might happen. The Raiders Haters are helpless and in awe.

The countdown is upon us. Here we go...

Good morning RT and the Raider Nation. Just having a little hair of the virtual dog that bit me yesterday. I woke up in a cold sweat after a nightmare that we didn’t pick Russell. So I’m having a frothy one to shake it off.

I half expected the Moss trade to be etched by now but, like the stock market, I’m always the last person to find out.

j-russ, j-Russ, J-Russ, J-RuSS, J-RUSS, JA-RUSS!

Good morning all.

I'm a California transplant living just outside NYC. I just returned from getting my draft ticket. Will be sitting with 2 other die-hard Raiders fans from the Black Hole. Another fan will be nearby - he's a die-hard Raiders fan from the Buckeye State.

The line, which was not supposed to officially start forming until 5 AM, began forming shortly before midnight. I arrived at 1:15 AM. Was about 200th in line. Was among 4 people who were the only Raiders fans there at that point. By 5 AM, the line had increased to a couple thousand wrapped around the Radio City Music Hall block. All of a sudden, they announced we had to back up, then they switched the front to behind us - so I went from being 200th in line to roughly 50th in line. Everyone behind that point was told they had to scramble to the back of the new end of the line (what used to be the front of the line). It was like a stampede - the running of the bulls - pick your metaphor. Wish I had a video camera along to record the mayhem. Was rather amusing. Nonetheless, the 4 of us Raiders fans wound up with nice seats in the Orchestra section.

Just enough time now for breakfast and a shower and then back to see the Draft at Radio City!

My prediction for draft:
Pick #1 - Calvin Johnson - too hot to miss - raw talent - and Gruden would be so bummed. :)
Pick #33 - Trent Edwards - big, strong, smart, talented, and most importantly, very competitive. Ideal for Kiffin.

Makes the most sense unless we make some kind of trade down.

If we do decide to take a QB with #1 pick - either JR or BQ - I won't be upset - but Johnson and Edwards as WR and QB seems to be the most bang for our buck.

Then we still have 2 picks in Round 3 - plus the 1st pick in the fourth tomorrow, etc. Plenty of opportunity to get a solid OL, etc.

They are saying Moss has agreed to redo his contract for NE, but won't to stay in Oakland, and unknown if he has done for any other team. I wouldn't mind him going to NE - it kinda makes sense since they are trying to catch up to Indy, and I'd like to see them try to get Mr No Effort back to his old self. Might be the beginning of the downward spiral for the Pats, and a bit of payback for us.

One thing I just thought of. Reports have said Al wants a 1st day pick for Moss. The top of the 3rd round values that as 265 points, the middle of the round is 190. If you package that with our number 2, that's enough value to take the 1st of NE picks in the first round at 24. Do you think that's worth it?

Raiders should get their first pick with just Moss, because he's willing to re-negotiate his contract with the Patriots (something he's not willing to do with the Raiders).
The talent he has proven in the League is worth it alone. If they want something, give them a middle Third Round

I'm a little ahead of myself, but this big dude, Walter Thomas, would be a good Day 2 acquisition. Saw a little segment on Kalil somewhere and he made a joke "with the #1 selection, Raiders pick Ryan Kalil", then laughed and said "no, not the Raiders" I thought that was strange.

9:35 AM

I'd like us to go after a TE with our next pick. Someone who can actually catch the damn ball.

Third round I'd like the Raiders to maybe take a flyer on Bush (I think that's his name the RB who's been hurt) if he's still availalbe.

As for Walter I hope he knows there will be a competitive camp, but I don't think JRuss is ready and won't be for a least a year. He's going to be an electric player, but I want him to have the best chance to change our fortunes!

The difference b/w Lienert and Russell however is that Lienert played a full year more in college in a prostyle program. I don't know enough about Cutler to be honest.

I don't want Russell taking any snaps unless it's to handoff the ball to LaMont in the 4th Qtr of a blowout game.

I may be overly conservative, but that's one of the reasons I liked Quinn more (physical talent aside) I'm a big proponent that at QB the more time you spend in college the better suited you are for the pro game.

I don't expect Russell to be starting until AT LEAST next season.

Because of the speed of the game... I think it's a baaaaaaaad idea to have Russell start any games this coming season.

nate, i DON'T dislike him. don't get me wrong. my whole thing with this guy is that he won't be ready for 2 years minimum. you figure, he's a junior coming out. he'll be sitting in what'll be his senior year. you figure also that a rookie QB sites for another year to learn, especially with how bad the o-line is then finally, he hits the field in his 3rd year.

this guy is going to get $30 mil gauranteed (i hear they are not even close on a contract). i want major returns for that 1st overall pick starting RIGHT NOW. i DON'T hate him, but that ain't gonna happen with this guy for 2 years.

Patience is a virtue. IMO, we don't need immediate impact. We need long-term stability at the most important position, and Russell may bring that.

Maybe Quinn will fall to Rd 2 and we can have him battle it out with Walter and Russell.

10:58 AM

10:58 AM

nyraider - patience is a virtue yes. but does al davis have this virtue to see if his investment'll pan out in 2 years? as much as davis doesn't want to admit it, this is what you call REBUILDING folks! you don't pick this guy without expecting him to sit down for a couple of seasons.

i hope the front office has a performance and weight clause in russell's contract. assuming they can sign him!

11:13 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

i disagree scorpio. russell is ready to play now. that is why the raiders selected him. it won't be 2 years before we see him in action.
kiffin, knapp, and company will be working with him pretty quick. we have to dump moss to get russell signed, so let's hope we can get it done!

Actually, I give Al Davis HUGE credit for putting the long-term good of the Raidas ahead of the immediacy you would expect with his age and health. And, I would expect Russell to be a viable option this year, at least by the end of the season.

still waiting to hear we've traded moss and one of our 2nd rounds to green bay for the #16. come on favre, where's your guarantee whiner?

quinn continues to fall, and all the sports media is going ga-ga over it too. geesh, you'd think he had fallen into a well, or was caught in a bear trap. a chicago bear trap.
i think that is where he may end up.

BWHAAA! They moved Brady to a room in the back where he can have a quiet girley-man moment alone with his girlfriend (who looks like that kid from Powder, BTW).

Poor b@$tard shouldn't have hyped himself like that the past month bein' on every sports show on every channel sayin' he'd go #1; he brought the fall on 'emself.

Well, the Raiders finally did it. It really was the only move, and I'm glad it's done. Now, on to pick #33.

Gentlemen, We are halfway through the first round as I type this. With JaMo as our new franchise QB, and the draft taking some unpredicted aquisitions, I am starting to believe we might have a chance of getting Dwayne Jarrett, WR from USC as our first pick in the 2nd round. Just dreaming out loud. Randy Who???

12:32 PM

I really hope somene like Meahum falls to the second round. A Russell/Meachum combination sounds better to me than the pft proposed Edwards/Johnson combo.

Alright Nation if IF Quinn is available do we take him with #33

Well, there's no way Quinn makes it past Dallas.

2 QBs in the same draft? I don't think so.

12:52 PM
Blogger Stick'em said...

2nd round looks like Kalil, Ugoh, or Blaylock to me. There are a lotta O-linemen left on the board at the moment, and our line is going to get JaMarcus on workman's comp if something isn't done.

12:53 PM
Blogger RaiderRealist said...

Stick'em-

Who do you like best of the three?

12:58 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

we need an OT in case Gallery and Sims can't cut it. But, I agree that some very attractive WR's might fall to #33. It's going to be a tough call... except that we need OL more than WR.

1:11 PM
Blogger RaiderRealist said...

Yes, I see Dwayne Bowe is still on the board. Hmmmmm.

Cleveland's giving up a 3rd rounder and an '08 1st round pick to Dallas for Brady Quinn.

1:17 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guessed JRuss and Jarrett as our first two picks, more conceivable were moss traded.

back to back ?3rd rounder will be fun. It's always cool to pick and be able to grab the TWO players you are having trouble deciding between.

With Quin, the Browns have best first day EASY.

I think it's a good move for Cleveland. Quinn is a class guy and will no doubt be an adequate if not spectacular QB. I was preparing myself for the Raiders to take him #1.

i agree! they gave up a LOT for quinn but it was a great 1st round for cleveland.

Bowe or Kalil?

1:26 PM
Blogger roscoe said...

Bowe over Kalil. Kalil's only like 290 and maxed out. But, Meachum over Bowe.

Staley or Meachem?

gotta get a DT or OL next....

1:40 PM
Blogger roscoe said...

Staley or Meachum? I'd be inclined to take Staley, but I don't think either will be available in the 2nd.

1:40 PM
Blogger Black Cat Bone said...

Raider Take, thanks man. Black Cat Bone is a VooDoo term. A bone from a black cat is a good luck charm, (sort of like a rabbits foot) in the VooDoo world. It is also a popular theme among old traditional blues songs. (I'm a blues musician) Let's hope JaMo is good luck for the RAIDERS !!!

Blogger Stick'em said...

Realist: I like Kalil most out of all the O-linemen for the Raiders. Granted, he certainly isn't the most imposing physically. Cable likes to zone block and Kalil's smaller size won't matter in his scheme.

When you listen to everyone repetitively year after year saying Gallery and Grove would be great IF they only played in the right scheme...

I dunno if the G-men will ever be great, but Kalil knows Kiffin's system and can make the line calls. Kalil will implement this scheme - PRONTO - and fix things for the other linemen immediately (if anyone can).

Grove will be a Guard regardless of who we draft. He can't even hike, much less recognize stunts and twists.

Blogger Stick'em said...

Black Cat Bone sounds like a mojo to me. Rub that thang with a bottleneck, baby! 'Cause Al woke up this mornin' and found his team sucked!

1:50 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Stick'em-
I agree. I've lost complete faith that Grove can call signals and snap the ball. I think Newberry plays immediately (see photo of him doing lunges w/ 185 lbs on Raiders.com), but we need long-term stability at center.

1:53 PM
Blogger Stick'em said...

NY: Don't get me wrong, I love Newberry and he worked with Cable back at Cal.

Thing is, ask Jim Otto or Barret Robbins how long you can play Center when your knees are shot...

1:56 PM
Blogger roscoe said...

The Raiders have Newberry to play center, with grove behind him. I know Newberry's old, but he's a pro bowler. I think we should try and pick up some beefy Guards in the third round and simply draft the most talented player available at #33. But, I'd prefer a tackle over a center just in terms of filling current needs.

Just a side note: I'm really interested in picking up 320+ pound monster Offensive Guard Manuel Martinez from Texas Tech. I'd love to see a spanish name on a Raider jersey, 'cause we have so many latino/chicano fans and this guys a BEAST anyway.

I was hoping for spencer to and I am sick that Denver got the defensive player I feared most in the draft, Moss. Fu*&! How damn tough can the afc west get? First Merriman and now Moss.
We need a DE to slam Cutler & Rivers to the ground. I really liked Spencer a lot but knew he'd be gone. I'm telling you... Charles JOhnson or Quenten Moses.

2:22 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

Did J-Russ get his fashion tips from, Al? Very old school, Chicago style gangster look...nice!

I've got my eyes on Tony Ugoh,OT, Arkansas for our #33 pick.

Certainly Game #3 vs. the Brownies has a potential, built in story of JRuss vs. the future underwear model, Quinny.

2:27 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Scorpio- thanks for the video tip. Kiffin was cool. I like the way he presents himself. Reminds of Gruden without the pretense of being pissed off. It was nice how he deflected a question about Moss. And asked if Russell will play, he said he will compete and play when he’s ready. Well, unless they bring in another vet, Russell should have no problem competing for a starting role... as early as Day One.

Kiff says they feel extremely good about the OL and they have moved people around (without specifying who and where). Otherwise, he seems as euphoric about his pick as I am.

OL players dropping like flies now. Staley and Grubbs gone. Kalil still there! Will he make it to #33? Doh!

I know there has been talk that Alan Branch was going to slide... like Michigan DT Gabe Watson did last year... and Branch may have some stress fractures in his legs...

But with LT and Larry Johnson in the AFC West, maybe we get the lard @$$ to clog the middle?

Anyone know why Branch is sliding out of the 1st?

Like Branch okay but he is a straight foward rusher with no speed. A 3-4 fit, not a 4-3. Ray McDonald of FL plays anywhere on the line... would be a great pick-up.
I think we're going to take Ugoh, but he was more of a track guy believe it or not. Sort of a "potential" type. Hope I'm wrong if we take him but I'm leery of him.
I talked up demeco ryan big time last year... i'm telling you Charles Johnson adn Q moses are the real deal. Moses would have been a round 1 in last years draft... 25 career sacks. Built like Jason Taylor... a basketball player, like JAson Taylor.

Available still:

RB Michael Bush
OG Justin Blalock
LB Paul Posluszny
DT DeMarcus Tyler
WR: Dwayne Jarrett

Personally, I think Michael Bush is gonna be a star once he fully recovers from that viscous leg break. But, he might be available in the third.
