Commanders Gameday Thread

This feels like a good 'measuring stick' game for week three.

The Commanders have the same record at 1-1. They seemed to have lost a bit off last year's fastball, while the Raiders are presumably on the ascent from last season.

The offense needs to step up after Monday's debacle. Geno isn't the type of QB who can transcend poor protection. All the Bowers and Jeantys and Genos aren't going to help much if you can't generate time and lanes on the line.

The difference between 1-2 and 2-1 feels like a gulf for some reason.  So let's see them put it together and steal one on the road and get some momentum going.

GO RAIDERS!

For the very reason you cited, RT, I'm floored by talk on the Internet about Raiders trading for AJ Brown. If we can't protect the QB or run the football that would be an insane waste of resources. Smith was not good under pressure last week. Honestly, we've said that about so many former Raiders QBs. The absence of Daniels today clearly favors the Raiders on paper, but that presupposes they will be able to catch Mariota, who will likely run often and make plays.

Even without Daniels, I see this game as 50/50... which makes me nervous.

"It's Time to Compete!" wink!

Stop me if you have heard this before. The OLine coach and ZBS system is hurting our offense right now. 5 sacks, as I type this, and a whole Quarter to play. No pressure on D as they keep dropping Crosby in coverage. What the H311 are we doing? Beyond frustrated

Wasn't able to watch, but following along on my phone. I'm sorry, but letting a Mariota-led team drop 41 on you is pathetic.

I'd be the first to say ZBS doesn't work, but they can't pass block either. And Chip Kelly's running game appears to have only one play, up the middle. Raiders scoring in garbage time means nothing. They got their assess kicked today. Period!

Wasn't Kliff Kingsbury a target of the Raiders for OC? His team ran over the Raiders today.

"Raiders Suffer Demoralizing Loss as Slide Continues,"

Watching Ashton Jeanty get stuffed behind the LOS over and over and over was absolutely demoralizing. Dylan Parham looked lost again this week. He let another defender walk right into the Raiders backfield.

These guys are better than that. We've seen it. It boils down to bad coaching.

Brennan Carroll has to go.
This is beyond embarrassing. Quite frankly, I am not sure we can beat Chicago. Play to the strengths of the team! Let your best players do what they do best! Its not that difficult of a concept

All we can hope for, is that the Raiders will improve as the season goes along.

Because right now, as usual, there is no where to go but up.

Three straight weeks of total failure by the O-line portrays the Raiders coaching staff as clueless. The line wasn't great last year but it was better than it is now. The only addition was Alex Cappa, who reportedly had his worst season as a Bengal last year. Of course, the Raiders swooped right in and grabbed him.

But we also saw Meredith moved to center and JPJ moved to guard. And I've watched Parham stand cluelessly when not directly engaged and allow defenders to walk into the Raiders backfield.

WTF is going on? These players aren't as bad as they've played. This has to be a coaching issue. JPJ was thought to be the next anchor at center, so much so, the Raiders dumped Andre James. Seems to me, it's another situation which the Raiders coaches want to run ZBS but they're stuck with power blockers. If so, we'll need to wait for them to revamp the O-line over the next couple years.

Here's the best part. If I'm right, they went out and drafted a RB before they had a O-line.

Even the great Pete Carroll can't escape the Raiders stupid ways. If he's not careful, we'll be adding him to the already long list of coaching failures.

I'm just going to say it. At the collegiate and professional stages, how the players play has more to do with coaching than it has talent. You have to have the talent to play at those levels, and you have to be coachable to play at those levels.
You get ripped by coaches and captains if you do not stick to your assignments, your whole group gets punished, and you're in the doghouse all week. So when you see a group like the entire O-Line look lost and confused, it has to do with coaching. The ONLY exception are players not sticking to their assignment.
Carroll's son looks lost as the O-Line Coach, and it is time to move on.

Trying to keep things in perspective.

So last night, "Super bowl contenders", the Ravens gave up 220 yrds on the ground, and Qb, Jackson, very hard to sack, was sacked 7 times.

Just goes to show even the best teams are a work in progress sometimes.

So maybe some hope for the Raiders as well.

The difference here, Ghost, it's not an anomaly. Marshall Newhouse provided the best description of the Raiders O-line:

"...seeing a lot of "disorganization" and poor communication from the Raiders’ O-line.",/i>

That statement describes their season so far. It's inexcusable!

NYR,... I hear ya, they've been terrible. But as usual with the Raiders, everything is new again. new 0-line coach, new scheme, maybe it's going to take some time for things to mesh.

At least, that's what I'm hoping, that things can improve as the season drags on. Staying positive here, and still believing in Pete Carroll.

Unfortunately, it's a sad state of affairs when after 24 years of losing our best hope remains, "things can only get better."

I wonder when we'll stop saying that...

Carroll has his son coaching the position group that's hurting us the most, consistently thru 3 weeks. They've shuffled players along the line and looked confused and disjointed in every game. Now they're reportedly looking at waivers for new players. We've all seen this group play better... which means it might be coaching. We witnessed similar coaching deficiencies in action last year with Luke Getsy. And we saw Pierce in denial until it was too late.

With Pete Carroll in charge, the Raiders don't have the luxury of time. Or does ownership not care about finishing the job before he leaves. That seems insane to me, but a real possibility.

Articles I've read seem to imply JPJ might be in the Raiders (Carroll's) doghouse. How did he go from 2nd round pick to starting guard to starting center, back to guard then bench warmer? Were (are) the Raiders really that awful at judging talent and coaching players?

On a side note J Bennett has landed on IR. Rough luck for the kid.

Yeah, that's a shame. I like Bennett, but, apparently, he didn't fit the Raiders scheme. He's a cover corner. Raiders are now playing zone defense.

Apparently, the same thing is happening to JPJ. He's a power blocker, but the Raiders are now playing ZBS.

I looked up some facts on JPJ and why the Raiders drafted him. In 2023 he won the Rimington Trophy for nation's best center and named a unanimous First Team All-American. He allowed ZERO sacks through his entire college career and led all FBS centers in pass-blocking grade (90.6) and overall grade (84.3) PFF. He only allowed one QB pressure in his final season. He quickly rose to starting center on the Raiders, at which point they cut Andre James.

On paper, this kid was made to be an NFL center. But now JPJ appears to be on the sideline because he doesn't fit ZBS. My biggest fear is that the Raiders will deal him away before they realize, once again, that ZBS doesn't work.

Shame on the Raiders for being so myopic in their offense that they can't fit in JPJ... who btw will be a good, maybe great O-lineman in the NFL. Just not for the Raiders, apparently.
