Chargers Gamenight Thread
I'm not gonna say that this is a must-win game, not even close.
But I do think it will be a bit of a litmus test.
The Chiefs are vulnerable right now, creating a bit of a vacuum in the AFC West, which we haven't had for quite a while. Meanwhile, the Chargers and Broncos appear to be on the upswing compared to recent years.
So the question is: are the Raiders now an upwardly mobile franchise in the AFC West that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the class of the division?
Or are we simply an improving team but stuck in the midlands for a while?
Tonight could help us start to answer those questions.
GO RAIDERS!

RT, still stuck in the Midlands. Sandy
Yeah, no doubt about that after tonight
When did Geno become so inaccurate?
Raiders OL is weak. They can't block, run or pass. So far, they have completely waisted Jeanty's talent. Jeanty should be getting to the second level where he does his best work. Ironically, the Raiders defense held up fairly well. They provided opportunities.
Meanwhile, Chargers are 2-0, with two division wins. Looks like there's a new sheriff in the division. Yet, they're beatable. Another waisted opportunity!
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me every year for the past 2 decades shame on me. Geno with 3 interceptions and sacked 3 times; Jeanty is not consistent, and 3.9 yards a carry, under 50 yards (the last 2 weeks) and under 20 carries is not going to cut it. Chip Kelly had some awesome calls, and the Raiders couldn't execute offensively.
Run and pass blocking were autrocious tonight as well. JPJ and Charles Grant being inactive didn't help. I said earlier that if JPJ couldn't get his head right, he'd lose to Cappa/Meredith; but Cappa did not impress last night at all. Second week that the right side of the line struggled. I'm surprised by DJ Glaze struggling, he was monster last season.
Our defense just gassed out by inept offensive play. Here's to getting my hopes up.
"Fool me every year for past two decades..." hahah. Good point on Jeanty NY
Geno 0-10 with 3 INT on passes of 10+ yards last night, with Tom Brady in the coaching booth, Chip Kelly as OC and Pete Carroll on the sideline. You can't make this stuff up
Guys what did you expect. This is a raise the floor year not what any of us want to hear but it is necessary given the state of the roster. Jeanty will be fine but the current situation begs the question do you draft a running back before building an oline. Here is a stat for you: "There are 54 RBs with 10+ carries this season. Ashton Jeanty ranks 54th with -0.1 yards before contact per attempt" Sandy
Hey NY, from the other post leading to this game. The Chiefs can complain about the offsides on the tush push all they want, because it was offsided. But, if the Chiefs were officiated properly they'd have 0 Super Bowl wins.
Another rebuilding year. Funny how at any time over the past 24 years we are more likely to be found in a HC honeymoon period or facing a HC firing than we are actually rebuilding. The results are always the same, i.e., us circling the drain.
We need to expect more. Time to raise the bar. Right?! Or is it okay to keep pumping out the same thing only to hope for better?
Pete Carroll became the oldest head coach in NFL history yesterday. Slow incremental progress isn't gonna cut it. Pete Carroll was clearly hired to be better than the others.
I'm not going to make too much out of one game, but I'm not satisfied with what I saw, and I certainly wouldn't call it progress.
Following up on my post above, this is what bothered me about the Raiders new mantra, "time to compete." What does that even mean? It's softer than any mantra the Raiders have had in their history, and it doesn't sound like something a pirate would say. It's got participation trophy written all over it.
So, are we to believe Sunday's game was about competing, and not necessarily winning? If so, maybe the org. accomplished their goal. They had more Raiders fans in the stands, and they were in the game, at least most of it. One thing is for certain, the Raiders history as a winning organization is far removed from where we stand today.
Welcome to the new Raiders, I guess. Just compete, baby!
I wish they would say "Just complete", as in complete a pass, or a run block, or a pass block ! Wouldn't that be nice !
Haha, Ghost Ship! Yeah, NY, it does sound soft. Maybe it's "time to comPETE" - as in Pete figure it out and right this ship.
Great Jeanty stat Sandy, sounds impossible?
Because of the schedule, I thought the first game was a must win. And they did. The Chargers game was winnable, but the Raiders (Geno Smith and the O-line) did not play well. So what's the answer? 3rd game on the schedule and the Raiders already find themselves sole searching to figure out who they are. It could soon come into question if Pete Carroll was really the answer. Not to say he's not capable, but is Carroll the short-term solution to a long-term problem? The window of opportunity with the proven HC is narrow.
What none of us could have predicted was that the Raiders O-line would be the source of their biggest concern. The letdown is epic after drafting the top RB in college FB with the #6 pick only to watch him get stuffed on every attempt, then have his snap count reduced to 24 plays with 11 carries in the second game. That seems like self-inflicted failure.
IDK the answer. But as we hash it out in real time, here's an interesting potential development. Washington may be without Daniels this week, which would put Marcus Mariota under center against his former team. This is where Sunday's game becomes a must win. If the Raiders let Mariota beat them, they will have sunk to another low. Not that they haven't allowed other backup QBs to dice up their secondary in the past, but this one would sting particularly hard and give them a losing record only 3 games into the season.
I have no prediction which way any of this will go. If Jeanty only gets 11 carries again, I think I'll have my answer.
