Kickoff 2010: Let The Good Times Roll

The 2010 regular season is upon us, and I'm excited to see Raiders turn the corner and return to being a force in the AFC West and beyond.

I am cautiously optimistic and naturally impatient after so many false starts that have resulted in 11 or more losses every season since today's kindergarteners were in the womb.

The Raiders did a nice job of positioning themselves for improvement in 2010. They maintained continuity at the top of the coaching ranks, while adding to the offensive equation with the appointment of Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator. They dispatched JaMarcus Russell and replaced him with Jason Campbell, resulting in a huge swing in the character department at the most important position. They drafted with purpose and reinforced the linebacking corps in an concerted effort to (finally) stop the run. For a second straight year, they resisted the temptation to bring in (or trade for) high-risk, low-character players.

In other words, we are witnessing some much-needed stability taking root and, hopefully, bearing fruit.

That said, areas of concern remain. For me, the main areas of concern are offensive line, the deep side of the defense opposite Nnamdi, and the wide receiving corps (I might include run defense, but I've got to think--or hope--that serious strides have been made on that front).

Stanford Routt, entering his sixth season, won the starting CB role over Chris Johnson. To say that the jury's out on Routt would be an understatment. As for the offensive line, well, let's just say that I'm glad we have some real depth at quarterback with Gradkowski, because Campell is already nursing some wounds.

The topic of wide receiver has been a hot one here at Raiders Take. I can't, for the life of me, understand the resistance toward acquiring a pair of sure veteran hands to shore up the ranks.
With Schilens ailing, our head coach actually mentioned Yamon Figurs (three career catches in four years) as a viable #3 receiver. Nick Miller? Jacoby Ford? Johnnie Lee Higgins? Step right up, ye unproven masses.

In that context, why wouldn't we want to see guy like Greg Camarillo or T.J. Houshmanzadah brought on board? I just don't understand the organizational complacency with regard to adding cost-effective depth to any position, let alone a position that has been a weak spot for several years running.

Remember, a dropped ball by DHB cost us a game last year. Drops were a problem in the recent preseason as well. Now, it's not inconceivable that eight or nine wins could win the division this year (eight was enough in 2008, right?). Connect the dots, and it's easy to see how our divisional fate could literally rest in the hands of our receiving corps.

Yes, the Raiders have taught me well when it comes to borrowing trouble. But right now, the slate is clean. The scent of football is in the autumn air. The trees are shaking and quivering and quaking. A new season is upon us, and hopefully a new era, too. I have my doubts, but I am putting them to rest. It's up to the Raiders not to re-awaken them.

Bring on the Titans, and (finally) let the good times roll.

Angelic Raider-

I agree that there are major changes that still need addressed. O-line being number one. WR being number two.

Am I alone in the spookiness of the off season changes and improvements from this summer. Lots of the gripes I had seemed to have been fixed or a solution provided to start fixing the problems. Orchestrated in a way that seems to be unfamiliar to us Raider fans, the main ingredient being common sense. Maybe its just getting rid of that horrible QB, but it seems spooky that we have made so many moves in the right direction and no moves in the wrong direction.

RAIDERS TILL I DIE!!!!!

Angelic Raider- I concur...

It does seem different initially on the surface but upon deeper review it's sorta business as usual...As mentioned by "RT" the "FA" have definitely improved so that's the area where it seems the most unfamiliar...But even than the types of player brought in are consistent with our past...

Predominately "FA"s have been high draft picks from other teams who were either replaced by younger fresh-meat or never really develop in their schemes...Now that's very typical...However not going after the "TO"s-n-"Vicks" in not normal at all...I would guess getting bit one too many times has made our front office "Gun Shy" rather than "Trigger Happy" and that looks to be a good thing...

Although "RT" may still argue Seymour was a desperation move but I don't buy into that...He was taken as soon as he became available and not a damn tick sooner...

If you look at our draft picks they also fit very well into the drafts of the past...It just so happens that this years crop targeted apparent needs in the trenches instead of the specialty players early on...But that came later and with a very consistent nature to our past as we selected the fastest "WR" followed by the fastest "DB" and added depth behind them later...

"Death Ro" as he is nicknamed on another board was a no-brainier...It's about time we went after a dominate force in the middle again...

Houston being taken and converted back to "DE" is a Raider TradeMark...How many times have we done so which brings us to "Vald" from a small program at the lower level..."OT" converted to "C" just like Mosebar was...Even the same size too...The other info on him reveals that he was the only "OL" player who scored in the top 10 of every single combine event/test...Now that was an EarMark Raider pick...Next Campbell...Is there any doubt that he doesn't fit the Raider mold...Fastest man in his class...

Everyone is an example of Size/Speed/Athletic/Tough quotient that the Raiders covet...

"RT"...Re: "WR"...

Now lets remember that threw time on this board I have been desiring my high potential player to be added to the roster but have been awarded only occasionally...Note also that I usually took abuse on this board for my desires...

Michael "DogMan" Vick as "Slash"....

Hainsworth...

Joe Haden "CB"...

"TJH" who you mentioned on this thread...

Colt Brennen "QB" to the "PS"...

But I posted what I wanted and stopped when they signed elsewhere...I didn't carry on and on with tears and complaints because I wasn't getting my way...

Why the hell are you...Can't just get over the simple fact that none of us get everything threw life...It's getting very old as the "WR" becomes another one of your "DeadHorse"s that you keep putting new saddles on and sending back out galloping across your board time -n- time again...

Simply put...WHY....I just don't get it...Is this something personal you have with the front office...Remember the words of the "Regulator"...

"if you are a "True Raider" fan, you follow the TEAM and the action on the field not what is happening in the owner's suite or boardroom."

So in a few hours we will see by the "Action on the Field" where we may still be lacking and I will make you a wager....

You will be proved wrong and our "WR"s will be proven adequate...

For sure the Raiders couldn't fix this horrible string of bad luck (or decisions)all at once. It's spooky that we made so many good moves in just a few months.

I hope DHB has a solid year 60 catches and 7 TD's. How did we not take Crabtree?

Stop Chris Johnson today Death Ro!!

Crabtree has not played a dn in the preseason and has been in the middle of a heated conflict with their "TE"...Now he says he is recovered from some mysterious "Neck Injury" and ready to play...

My perception is he is a young cancer that will becomes a team plague and I'm damn glad not to have him even if he can make plays...Early signs are he is worst than Moss/"TO"/Porter/Walker all rolled up in one...

"DHB" was not at all a polished player which was already known but he had the attitude and the physical attributes to develop into one...It's wait-n-See but I have faith he will not disappoint in the long run...

Well excellence just does not happen at every position overnight..That takes time to develop on every NFL team so let's just keep it real Baby!...

Understand that "Adequate" equates to moving the chains and scoring points with the help of our "RB"s-n-"TE"s as receivers while we depend upon an improved "D" to keep us in the game...

I haven't heard the words "Dominate Team" used yet this season to describe the Raiders and doubt that will happen any too soon...That's just a platform we hope to achieve in the not too distant future...In the meantime an average NFL team may be adequate to take our division and that's all most reasonable fans are hoping for at this point...

Talking 8-8 is hardly talk of "Excellence"...

I don't think I'm being unreasonable, or asking for anything to be done overnight. We're now many nights into this.

An NFL team needs to be able to multi-task. There was literally nothing stopping us from adding veteran depth at WR.

Unfortunately, I believe that our continued inaction on this front will hurt us this year.

That is my take right now. I will stop defending it for the sake of civility.

Well in keeping with the past trends here is something potentially very negative just prior to our opening day toss of the coin...

NFLPA seeking signatures for possible desertification

That began last week with the New Orleans Saints, who unanimously passed the measure, according to sources.

Now don't that suck the big one if our season is interrupted again in 2011...

I can't believe these owners would even consider locking out the players but who the hell knows anymore in an apatite of greed on both sides of the ball....As if there isn't enough money to spread around...

How about giving a little reduction in cost to the fans or opening up the viewing for the totally disadvantaged like me and a few others who resides far outside the realm of NFL activities...Last season I was ripped off by NFL Total Access and it took 5 months to get my money returned...

A clean slate and a fresh new season awaits beginning in Tennessee.

CJ's 5 Keys vs. the Titans:

1. Contain Chris Johnson by minimizing the big, back breaking 10+ yard run gashes.

Our front 7 will need to put a huge emphasis on staying disciplined with their run fits and gap assignments but most importantly, do a good job of wrapping Johnson up to allow other defenders to rally to the ball.

2. Keep Vince Young in the pocket.

The edge rushers (Trevor Scott, Matt Shaunnessey, and LaMar Houston need to be aware of VY’s ability to get outside of the pocket, pull the ball down and pick up big chunks of yardage. This will require the DEs to be able to disengage from their blocker and force VY inside towards other defenders. Rolondo McClain will need to keep a vigilant eye on VY as well.

3. Find some semblance of a rush offense through a committee approach.

With Michael Bush questionable to play in the game, McFadden, Bennett, and Cartright will need to step up their games with an increased work load. Keeping the down and distance manageable will be dictated by the committee getting positive yards of 2,3,4,5 yards instead of getting stonewalled at the line of scrimmage.

4. Offensive Game Management

OC Hue Jackson and QB Jason Campbell need to devise and execute the game plan effectively. Keep the Titans pass rushers at bay incorporating the RBs & FB into the passing game with a variety of screens and delayed outlet passes.

5. Turnover battle, winning the field position game, and red zone efficiency.

The 3 elements above often dictate the difference between a win and a loss.

I believe it's quite possible, PantRaider.

I could be wrong about our WR situation. I hope I am.

Again, I'm not saying they're a disaster. I'm saying I think we lack depth, and that we should have gotten Campbell more weapons to maximize our offensive potential. The playoff margin in our division could be very thin, and we need to do everything we can to put us over the edge.

Excellence is the destination, and I'm all for anything that accelerates our arrival.

"CJ"...

#3 worries me the most at this point...Simply because that's Tenn "D"s strength and our apparent weakness in the preseason and it's imperative that they respect the run if we're going to protect our "QB"s and have time in the passing game...

I personally think their "DB"s are very suspect against a strong passing attack but we need to have the time to make that work...

#'s 1-n-2 are both a no-brainier and we can stack the box to keep them contained...But at the same time we must have sufficient pressure to disrupt the very limited passing game that they have demonstrated so far and let our "DB"s take care of the rest....

Figurs fumbled his way through preseason to earn a starting role as KR/PR, only to fumble the opening KO of 2010.

The O-line is every bit as ineffective as ever, including the false start penalties.

I'm Still not convinced Campbell is a better option than Gradkowski.

Although they looked stout on occasion, the defense still lacks pressure... including an all too familiar 3-man pass rush on 3rd and long that once again yielded results for the other team.

That was far worse than I could have imagined.

I guess we can wait at least one more week for the "I told you so's" to roll out.

And even with the loss, we still get bombarded here with stats... like we can't find them ourselves on 50 different websites.

1:46 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

What we learned that we didn't want to know...

My Bad My Denial......

#1...The "OL" was bad but worse than I feared...

Penalties (Yds) 10(77) was mostly on the "OL"..."LT"/"C"/"RG"/"RT"....

I could sorta excuse the Rookie "C" for holding but Henderson at "LT" is a real liability...He has no heart...According to what I heard on the radio broadcast he missed blocks because he stood there confused instead of going after it...He was the worst we had...The right side was also not able to hold their own...Something needs to change here and very quickly or we aren't going anywhere but down down down...

Here are some possible remedies so we can move "Vald" to "LT"....

Dolphins cut C Jake Grove
Steelers cut C Justin Hartwig

"SD" has a "PB" "OT" in "Animated Suspension" that we might be able to go after...

#2...It's not going to matter much who we have at "WR" if we don't have time to throw...

The "WR"s were rarely even thrown to...Zack drew the double coverage so the rest should have been singled up in the zone...I would like to know how it looked in coverage...How much separation did they have...was it just that "CJ" was under siege that disrupted that area of the game...

#4...Our run "D" is still very suspect...Fortunately we don't have to face too many double threats like this game had where both the "QB"-n-"RB" hurt us but damn!...This was not good and they knew exactly what was coming and had ample time to prepare for it....

#5...3rd dn "D" is vastly inadequate...

Third Down Efficiency 8/15 - 53%

#6...And in general...

Average Gain per Rushing Play 5.3
Average Gain per Passing Play 7.4

We can't depend on anything with crap on the field....

I'm not sure about adjustments...We were down and came out with "TO"s trying to play catch-up with the pass....Late in the game we slowed the run better than early on which is strange considering our "D" should have been tired...

Wait-n-See is past now we enter Wait-n-See if we can do anything about it....

D. McFadden 6/55yds 1TD Rec
Z. Miller 4/43yds

Just as I projected it would be....

Meanwhile, Campbell put up very Russell-like numbers today... 2 fumbles and an INT.

He could have made a 1st down when the game was still in reach, but decided instead to "safety-slide" for a 4th down. I believe this was a pivotal play in the game. You got to want it, plain and simple.

epic failure on ALL counts:

1. Contain Chris Johnson by minimizing the big, back breaking 10+ yard run gashes.

The 76 yard TD was the ultimate "back breaker".

2. Keep Vince Young in the pocket.

Nope. VY ran fancy free especially when we were in M2M and had our backs turned to him.

3. Find some semblance of a rush offense through a committee approach.

Don't be fooled by Run DMc's stats. When we needed to run the ball in the 1st 2 quarters when the game was still in contention, we could not run the ball. The rushing yards that were piled up were draws on 3rd and longs, and 2nd half runs when Tenn. was up by 3 scores.

4. Offensive Game Management

It is hard to manage a game when your QB is running for his life on almost every single pass snap. Fumbles, sacks, 3rd and longs ... not gonna happen.

5. Turnover battle, winning the field position game, and red zone efficiency.

lose, irrelevant, n/a

What we learned that we didn't want to know...

My Bad My Denial......

#1...The "OL" was bad but worse than I feared...

Penalties (Yds) 10(77) was mostly on the "OL"..."LT"/"C"/"RG"/"RT"....

I could sorta excuse the Rookie "C" for holding -n- bad snaps but Henderson at "LT" is a real liability...He has no heart...According to what I heard on the radio broadcast he missed blocks because he stood there confused instead of going after it...He was the worst we had...The right side was also not able to hold their own...Something needs to change here and very quickly or we aren't going anywhere but down down down...

We can't depend on anything with this crap on the field....

I'm not sure about adjustments...We were down and came out with "TO"s trying to play catch-up with the pass....Late in the game we slowed the run better than early on which is strange considering our "D" should have been tired...

Wait-n-See is past now we enter Wait-n-See if we can do anything about it....

Points where I agree...

#1) "FG" on 4-1 at end of half was very damn weak...

#2) "CJ" has not proven he is a capable "QB" but "GradSki" may well be...

#3) We can't keep Zack healthy is he continues to take such a beating...

#4) "OL" is not dependable and doubtful to improve sufficiently as is...

#5) PhonyFanShadowPoster Celebratingly happy to have it bad was very damn obvious...Examples to follow at end of post...

Points where I disagree...

#1 Al Davis was NOT wearing any hats was he...So what's the point in bashin his aged appearance other than to feed your damn "HateTrip"...

#2) We blitzed and it showed by "LB" play in their backfield but on plays where we needed to send extra defenders we laid back and let them take advantage...Later in the game we did better...

#3) The "WR"s were not offered an opportunity to show anything with the poor play by our "OL" -n- "QB"s inconsistency so there is still the possibility of success with that unit...

PantyRaider...Can't Say The "WR"s Were Adequate If Not Involved In The Game!!!/_
