Roster Announced + George Sets Record

The Raiders have announced their 53-man roster. To look at it another way, click here to see the official release list from the Raiders. Looks like Jeff George smashed the world record for negative media coverage about a fourth-string signing who was with his team for less than a week. Why is that? Hmmm...Could it have something to do with the media looking for any excuse to bash the Raiders?

Oddly, while the Raiders include Tui on their published roster, this report from ESPN says that Tui has been released, possibly to pave the way for George to re-sign after the first game of the season. My gut tells me that they have the Tui news wrong, and that they mistook him for his fullback brother, who was released. (NOTE 6:05 p.m.: ESPN has corrected the story; trust me, they said that the Raiders were down to two QBs).

Danny Clark was released? I don't get it. I am glad Kevin Booth and Reshard lee made the team, though.

George ain't gettin' signed again. I just don't understand the rationale behind it...did he perform badly in practice? If so, that's expected. But what a waste of time. Really.

Did they even make a deal? If so, what was tha $$?

The curious George signing was much ado about nothing. My feeling on the signing is that it was a meet & greet exercise. The Raiders now have George on their rollodex in case during the season there is a need to sign an emergency QB.

One of the noticeable trends about the final cuts was a movement towards youth. Releasing/trading veterans such as Hamilton, Garmon, and Clark is part of that equation. The draft picks for Gabriel & Hamilton will be another infusion of young talent down the road.

It's interesting having Jeff George on speed dial.

If Aaron Brooks were to get hurt, is Andrew Walter really the next in line to play Qb ? Even if he did play, I wonder how much time he would get before they yanked him in favor of statue George ?

Given all this, it really makes me wonder how the Raiders could have passed on both Leinart, & Cutler, both of whom had fine preseasons. To think that we now are forced to have a 39 yr old clay Qb waiting in the wings. Very unsettling.

What a disgusting day for the Raiders, Gabs thrwon away to NE for NOTHING. And a 10th DB that will never see the field makes the roster ahead of Danny Clark.

TOTAL FUCKING BULLSHIT.

Its becuase we havent got a fucking clue about the QB position.

You're right, George will be on speed dial, and they will want him in ASAP if Brooks goes down, the Raiders no more see Andrew Walter as thier future QB, as they do Tui.

Meanwhile Leinart will have a great career WITHOUT QUESTION, and Cutler is going to slice us for years.

FUCK YOU DAVIS.

Keep the KOOL AID flowing.

We made a complete mess of it yesterday, it was mind numbingly bad.

Well, I'll say one thing about this move, it set the record for f-bombs here at Raider Take!

The compensation for Gabriel does seem a bit low (fifth round pick) at first glance, but I believe that he is in the last year of his contract, and that we have sufficient depth to compensate for his departure (especially considering Gabriel's buttery fingers). The timing of the trade is more puzzling to me, since he was our #2 receiver throughout the preseason, ostensibly developing a crucial rapport with Brooks and the first team offense. Hopefully Porter won't miss a beat.

Several folks have alluded to the notion that these recent draft pick acquisitions point to a "rebuilding" mindset. Well, if we're rebuilding, then that changes the whole analysis of things, most notably our QB position.

I will miss Gabriel, but I must agree with Peter.

These men have filled us with hope in the 4-1 preseason. Deep breaths. We'll all feel better once we have our way with the disChargers.

Do a reality check about Doug Gabriel. We have plenty of WRs, so we won't miss 'em.

A 5th rounder seems fair for a guy who has been a 3rd WR at the peak of his career, especially considering he only has one year left on his contract (he can void the second year).

So the *Pats got an immediate help for their Branch situation, but who's to say Gabriel will even be a *Patsy next season?

Contract says he can leave, the way I understand it, so Basically Doug's a one-year mercenary for a 5th.

Also consider that at this point in the season, how much of a chance will Gabriel have to develop timing with Brady.

As TO's dreadful performance in Dallas has shown us, WRS can't just miss training camp and the preseason with a new QB and amount to much of $h!+ right away.

Some of you guys are just doing the knee-jerk reaction and kicking yourselves in the noggin.

Think before you type - just a suggestion.

Ahhh, I love the smell of vitriol in the morning...

I have to agree with Calico/Peter on this. Second guessing Al & Art is a waste of air...These guys have been out there and watching tape day-in day-out.

I think the opposition to Gabriel's trade is more a "fan-favorite" kind of reaction than a level-headed examination of the situation. That being said, the rapport that Gabriel & Brooks MUST have built up during the preseason will be a challenge to replace. But Freddie B. and Art obviously thought this was not going to be that big of a hurdle.

I like the rolodex scenario for George...I just hope it's not a Vinny Testaverde situation!! Vinny came off the couch in week 2 last year for the Jets and looked every bit like the 38 y/o couch potato. That was, however, after both Jay Fiedler and Pennington were injured in back to back games, and I can't see something as drastic as that happening.

As for Clark/Riddle/Garmon releases, see my point above. Our ability to judge players is far inferior to coaches who scrutinize everything in training camp. Clark came into camp as a starter, and is now cut. That says more about Clark's performance than anything we can judge from watching 5 pre-season games.

Just to make it clear:

I'm down on the whole Jeff George deal, but I'd take Morant over Gabriel anyday.

The way I look at it, we got a 5th rounder, plus now Morant can play. Seems like a good move to me.

All good points, friends. I tend to agree, especially in hindsight.

However, I suspect that if someone had come in here on Thursday and said, "Hey, I've got an idea, let's trade Gabriel for a fifth-round pick," we'd have probably asked him to back away from the hookah pipe.

We are not sure of the draft choice are we? This was not reported from an inside sorce and it may depend on how Gabe plays? Maybe 5th is the lowest we get? Maybe it could go to a 2nd or 3rd? What about the hold out WR of NE, maybe we get the rights to him in the future? would you bitch about that too? After one yere maybe Gabe comes back, would you bitch about that too?

Maybe this is a slap in the face of Porter, he wanted what Gabe got but it went to the player who worked hard and earned it, after all its not like they sent him somewhere he was not going to be happy like loooooooosing SanFran!!!We do not know what was said to Gabe before this went down, maybe he wanted it? Several teams asked about him so maybe he got to pick where he went? Meanwhile PORTER-SHUT UP AND PLAY is the comand of the day!! I think I like the way Mr. Shell deals with ass hole players, slap the hell out of them and make them play!!! Next time a player wants out he will think twice about how he asks for it, beter be working hard!!not acting like some crying lame duck!!!no TO's on this team, you get KO'ed for that shit. The rest of the leage should take notes and learn and get the players back to bing players and not rullers!!

I will wait one more week to make up my mind, happy or sad, MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!

But in the END, Mr. Davis is the GOD FATHER and knows a whole lot more about football than any us!!To those who say "FUCK YOU AL" I say BULL SHIT you ANTI-RAIDER BITCH!!!Go back to SanFran lousers!
Our owner gots the "HALL OF FAME" but yours gots the JAIL CELL, Oh Poor Edie!!!The Bitch turned on his partners to save his own asss!!And Carman got it in the Ass too!!Your history sucks LOOOUUUSSSEEERRRSS!!!!

Anon is bringing it! And why not? The time has come to froth at the mouth. The Chargers are coming to our house, and we need to send them packing with a big "L" tatooed on 'Lil Phil's forehead.

The reports I read claimed that it was Gabriel for a fifth round pick.

I think, shell and porter had a talk and that led to shell being able to let go of gabriel.. I get the feeling that porter is back on :o
