The Raiders' owner, Al Davis, died on Oct. 8.

Their starting quarterback, Jason Campbell, broke his right collarbone on Oct. 16.

Their new quarterback of the present and future, Carson Palmer, was summoned from the couch at his home in the San Diego area in a blockbuster trade two days later.

Their most explosive player, running back Darren McFadden, twisted his foot awkwardly on Oct. 23 and hasn't been seen since. Wide receiver Jacoby Ford, another big-play threat, has missed eight games with hamstring and foot problems.

Their middle linebacker, Rolando McClain, was arrested on Dec. 1 and charged with four misdemeanors including firing a gun in the
city limits on a trip to Decatur, Ala., while attending the funeral of a relative. He was photographed smiling for the cameras in handcuffs while being put in a police car.

In control of their destiny with a 7-4 record, the Raiders responded with three consecutive losses, including noncompetitive blowouts in Miami and Green Bay where they found themselves behind 34-0 before scoring.

Every game has been a struggle. The Raiders have exactly one game with a 10-point margin of victory -- a 34-24 win over the New York Jets in Week 3.

Yet with a win over the Chargers and a plausible scenario involving Kansas City, Denver, Cincinnati, Tennessee and the New York Jets, they can be in the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

Few teams have quilfied back-up "QB"s/"RB"s/"WR"s who can come in and keep up the level of play...That because few teams have good ones to begain with...They are a sparce comaidty and everyone want's one....

Who is the dumb ass? The Patriots had a record of 11-5 the year Brady went down. Oops, bad example PR. We haven't had a winning record since 2002 yet 11-5 is "tanking"?

I fully realize injuries are a part of the game. Yes, it does impact W/L records. Quite frankly I'm sick and tired of Raider fans pointing the finger at injuries, bad officiating, etc. it is pathetic on every possible level.

My view is that good teams overcome adversity and challenges. It seems to me that you are the true "doom and gloomer" since you keep bringing up the injury factor and Al Davis' passing as reasons to lower YOUR expectations.

I have faith in all the guys on our roster who have filled in for injured players at some point in the season. Where is your faith?

Our most significant injuries in 2011:

Shaunnessey - a tough loss but our DLine was one of our strongest, deepest units. Wimbley & Moss have made this loss manageable.

Campbell - Palmer is an upgrade who can make more dynamic plays.

McFadden - a very tough loss but Bush has been a worthy replacement.

OLine - has been healthy the entire year besides Satele missing a few games but Wiz slide over w/o missing a beat.

Huff - Giordano and Mitchell have filled in admirably

WRs - WRs have been injured from 1 game to 6 games but the depth has been there to compensate for the majority of the season's games. Having Moore and Ford out simultaneously for a few games stung but the replacements were proven performers (TJH, Murphy, Schillens, DHB)

In Oakland, Palmer replaced Campbell and, aside from his first couple of games, has played well enough....

Arguably, McFadden was a far bigger loss than Campbell.

All teams have significant injuries to key players throughout the course of a brutal 16 game season.

And no, I'm naive to think that injuries don't play a major part in the outcome of games.

How an organization deals with the injuries is by having solid depth, making acquisitions, coaching, and adjusting the game plan accordingly.

You can blame the Bears and Bills losing ways to injuries, misfortune, poor front office moves, coaching, and the "next man up" not stepping up.

Doom and gloom? Nope. High expectations and high hopes for the team I love.

Excuses? Nope. Excuses are for born losers.

I'm with you on the Raiders starting fast and jumping on the Chargers early and often. I would like to see more safe, short passes on 1st down to make 2nd down and 3rd down more manageable and less predictable. Screens to Bush, quick outs to DHB, and yes, easy square-ins to Boss!

Johnson was listed as questionable on the Titans' injury report Friday, though he was a full participant in the team's final practice of the week.

While the Titans will spend Sunday fighting for their playoff lives -- in addition to keeping an eye on scores from various other AFC games -- the Texans are resting a number of notable starters. Running back Arian Foster was declared inactive, as was cornerback Johnathan Joseph and tight end Owen Daniels.

Raiders plan front-office restructuring in wake of Davis' passing

The Oakland Raiders will beef up and restructure their front office, three months after the Oct. 8 passing of former owner Al Davis, according to team and league sources. If the team misses the playoffs, that process will begin in earnest as soon as Monday.

Two names with ties to the organization -- Reggie McKenzie and Elliot Wolf, both of the Green Bay Packers -- are repeatedly mentioned by sources with knowledge of the process as favorites to end up with the Raiders. Former longtime NFL personnel executive Ken Herock, who had three stints with the Raiders, is advising owner Mark Davis on the process and has been a regular presence at the team's facility, according to sources.

Herock declined to comment on his consulting role with the team. A Raiders official also declined to comment.

Herock is close with Ron Wolf, a longtime NFL personnel executive who worked with Herock at several stops, including with the Raiders. Wolf promoted McKenzie in Green Bay, and Elliot Wolf is Ron's son.

The Raiders will speak to other candidates. Eric DeCosta (director of player personnel with the Baltimore Ravens), Tom Gamble (director of player personnel with the San Francisco 49ers) and Les Snead (director of player personnel with the Atlanta Falcons) also are on Oakland's wish list, sources said.

The fact that coach Hue Jackson has significant power in the organization and reports directly to Davis could make some candidates uncomfortable, and there is an expectation among many general managers that although McKenzie and Wolf could have other options, the Raiders remain a viable possibility.

NFL exec Anderson garners interest as front-office candidate

Several NFL executives and agents involved with potential front-office changes have pointed to league executive Ray Anderson as a candidate for openings.

Anderson offers a deep background in all areas of football -- as a player, agent and former official in the NFL Players Association. He has experience working with NFL organizations and currently oversees football operations with the league.

Anderson is content at the league office, according to some in contact with him, but he's also a historian of the game. There never has been an African-American team president in the NFL, and sources note Anderson has been willing to challenge himself by taking different career paths in the past.

Several teams are mulling possible front-office changes or additions, including the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings. Whether or not Anderson would fit with any of these teams remains to be seen, but the buzz around him has grown as the season winds down.

Anderson declined to comment on the chatter, but he noted that he "loves" his role with the league office.

And nobody (unless you, PR) is trying to tie the lack of TE production to the loss of Al Davis, nor the substantial injuries.

My point is, with all the injuries, the TE position should have become more effective, not less. Right?

Hopefully, Jackson has had time to reflect on the lack of use at TE and today's game will demonstrate the power of the position.

They should have minded their depth chart better. They didn't, and that's why Caleb Hanie is their QB (and why Kyle Boller was ours for a spell).

Excuses are different than expectations.

I expect Carson Palmer and Michael Bush and Kevin Boss and our deep receiving corps to be able to not fall off a cliff.

The Raiders version of the Bears' Caleb Hanie and Kahlil Bell is Kyle Boller and Rock Cartwright.

Carson Palmer was never a backup. We spent (potentially) two 1st round draft picks to acquire him.

Michael Bush is a starter in the NFL, which his new contract (or franchise tag) will soon affirm.

So how can replacing Campbell with Palmer and McFadden with Bush send the Raiders so far out of their offensive scheme as to take the TE out of playcalling?

Anyway, it's gameday! Many in the media are predicting SD to win. IMO, the Raiders will need to strike early and often to get the Chargers to check out before the game ends. That should keep the Bresnahan factor out of the equation.

Nothing wrong with checking down to a TE or RB if it means a higher rate of conversions on 3rd downs.

Utilizing all the skill players in a variety of ways makes it more difficult for a defense to zero in on what the offense is doing.
