Patriots Gameday Thread
For opening day, I feel oddly unmoved.
How many years have we been right here, with all of the preseason hype and another new regime and cries of "this time it's different" followed by all of us saying "prove it" followed by more of the same.
I'm not sure how much the Raiders are going to prove this year, but please, please, the only thing I ask for is DIFFERENT. This is my 21st season at Raider Take. Please let this one be an actual beginning to something different and promising rather than just another beginning to a predictable end.
GO RAIDERS!

Geno was fantastic. Nice win. Sandy
Yea, strong start to the season!
The game exposed two noticeable upgrades: QB and coaching. Smith's upgrade is pretty obvious, but the coaches must have made some adjustments at halftime (something we're not used to). Also, Carroll was aggressive before the end of the half (again, something we're not used to).
The defensive secondary outplayed my expectations, and we learned that Devon White is a force near the LOS.
Meyers had 8 catches on 10 targets. He was a critical factor in the Raiders passing game. And I learned today that he had zero drops last year. Honestly, the Raiders can't replace Meyers with anyone as good (now or in the foreseeable future) and they have ample resources to pay him a market rate extension. Stupid not to!
Enjoy the win!
That Brock is one of one. Sandy
The game showcased the Raiders receiving weapons, for sure, but it also demonstrated their biggest concern, the offensive line. I found this Yardbarker excerpt to be interesting...
"Vegas was most ineffective on the ground in some of the most crucial run situations of the game. It got to the point where the Raiders were essentially forced to throw the ball on third and short. In the passing game, the protection was satisfactory for the most part. The issue was that they had no clue how to handle even the most routine stunts.
.... we have to start questioning if this is more of an issue of coaching rather than talent. This is a fairly proven group that has rarely struggled this much. Even with last year’s run-game issues, the blocking, which could have been better, was not nearly as big of a problem as the lack of talent at running back was. It raises the question: Did Brennan Carroll, the offensive line coach, secure his position due to his coaching skills or his last name?"
Let's hope they figure it out. To the Patriots credit, their front 7 is very stout, but this won't be the last time we will say that about a Raiders opponent. Raiders OL has to do better.
The O-line was the weakest part of the team on Sunday. The comment from Yardbarker is a little harsh on the nepotism call out but the analysis is spot on. JPJ is undiscplined adn was average, Glaze looked awful and they had to send help is his way often. Kolton is solid. I really hope Jeanty's or for that matter Geno's talents are not wasted behind this line. That being said Brock is superhuman, he is uncoverable. Sandy
I believe Carroll will find an answer for the O-line. He doesn't strike me as being uncertain about his expectations.
The Raiders demonstrated an aggressive urgency at the end of the first half.
Meyers made a catch and sprinted to the LOS to give the ball to the official and setup the spike play, leading to a FG try. Smart play by Meyers, but apparently the Raiders teach that. When was the last time we saw the Raiders play that smart? Cordarelle Patterson was a really smart ST player for the Raiders, like 10 years ago, and Davante Adams definitely had some chops, but it was nice to see.
In an example of smart sideline coaching, Carroll called a time out after the play which Crosby knocked the ball out of Maye's hand in order to allow the replay officials to take a longer look at the play for potential Raiders fumble recovery.
We're being spoiled by good coaching... we're in better hands than we're used to being. It's been so long, it feels like uncharted territory.
Eagle's Jalen Carter showed this week perhaps why the Raiders didn't draft him over Tyree Wilson (even if hindsight suggests they should have). Spitting on Dak Preskot is still being reviewed by NFL for possible suspension.
I think JPJ got involved in some sideline thing this weekend and showed his lack of discipline. Add to that, media reported his PFF grade was lowest on the Raiders line.
Sorry I am late to the game on this. Great team effort and win, yes, there is always something to work on. What I noticed in One game than any other year the past 2 decades, is the Raiders made adjustments at halftime, and came out swinging. JPJ continues to struggle, and the only sacks given up were by he and DJ Glaze. Because of this, the run game struggled a little too, but I am hopeful that Glaze and JPJ can figure it out. I think if JPJ doesn't learn to get out of his own way, he is going to find himself on the bench in favor of Kappa.
As far as Jalen Carter, he reminds me of a young Suh. Great talent, however, does not make good decisions in the heat of the moment. Preskot spit in his direction and told him to get away from the huddle; and that is what instigated the whole breakdown. NFL is fining him $57,222 for spitting on Dak; and no suspension, which is really surprising to me. Initial reports were that he could be fined up to $100k and 3 game suspension with the ejection before a snap serving as one.
All-in-all, it was a completely different look than what we saw in preseason, which I knew it would be, and at the same time relieved that it is. Great first win, on to the Dunder Bolts. JUST WIN, BABY!
It's a great win, and a rare eastern time zone, 1:00pm, win at that !
But as the great John Madden used to say, week one is over, now the season can start.
I don't care what political side of the aisle you are on, but what we just witnessed with the assassination of Charlie Kirk is appalling. We are witnessing the destruction of what our country was built on, the right to debate our differences peacefully and without fear of violent repercussion. It is time for our President, Republican and Democrat leaders, and Supreme Court Justices to come together and condemn this act with unity. They must then began to work in the same unity to end their own hateful rhetoric toward one another. It is time for our Nation's Leaders to lead.
Sorry for the non-Raiders' post, but this deeply disturbs me.
No need to apologize for having a good heart. It's a tough day all around, remembering the victims of 9/11
NY, it is sad to see our country so divided only 24 years after being united
NY, you were upset about the Bennett trade watch this you will feel better https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=699410673153860
Sandy
I agree, Booker had a solid game. I would say the defense, as a whole, was a nice surprise and exceeded my expectations in that game.
But Geno Smith impressed me the most. With no running game, Smith used play-action, went through his reads and demonstrated his accuracy (and probably above-average arm) to carry the Raiders to a decisive win in the rain, on the road.
How did we get so spoiled?
But I'm cautioned that no player or team is as good as their best play or best game. If the Raiders don't figure out a running game, teams will figure them out. Many fans and sports media seem to blame Jeanty for the lack of running game against the Pats, but what I saw was an ineffective OL. They want him to be more patient and look for a lane, but it's tough to run forward if the defense is already in the backfield when he's handed the ball. That said, I believe the Patriots front seven is better than some are giving them credit.
Lots of anticipation leading up to MNF.
